The COVID-19 pandemic has caused millions of deaths and hundreds of millions of confirmed infections worldwide.This pandemic has prompted researchers to produce medications or vaccines to reduce or stop the progression and spread of this disease.A variety of previously licensed and marketed medications are being tested for the treatment and recurrence of SARS-CoV2,including favipiravir(Avigan).Favipiravir was recognized as an influenza antiviral drug in Japan in 2014,and has been known to have a potential in vitro activity against SARS-CoV-2,in addition to its broad therapeutic safety scope.Favipiravir was recently approved and officially used in many countries worldwide.Our review provides insights and up-to-date knowledge of the current role of favipiravir in the treatment of COVID-19 infection,focusing on preclinical and ongoing clinical trials,evidence of its efficacy against SARS-CoV-2 in COVID-19,side effects,anti-viral mechanism,and the pharmacokinetic properties of the drug in the treatment of COVID-19.Due to its teratogenic effects,favipiravir cannot be offered to expectant or pregnant mothers.The practical efficacy of such an intervention regimen will depend on its dose,treatment duration,and cost as well as difficulties in application.

To pursue the ideal of a safe high-tech society in a time when traffic accidents are frequent,the traffic signs detection system has become one of the necessary topics in recent years and in the future.The ultimate goal of this research is to identify and classify the types of traffic signs in a panoramic image.To accomplish this goal,the paper proposes a new model for traffic sign detection based on the Convolutional Neural Network for com-prehensive traffic sign classification and Mask Region-based Convolutional Neural Networks(R-CNN)implementation for identifying and extracting signs in panoramic images.Data augmentation and normalization of the images are also applied to assist in classifying better even if old traffic signs are degraded,and considerably minimize the rates of discovering the extra boxes.The proposed model is tested on both the testing dataset and the actual images and gets 94.5%of the correct signs recognition rate,the classification rate of those signs discovered was 99.41%and the rate of false signs was only around 0.11.

Progressive multifocal leukoencephalopathy (PML) is a severe demyelinating disease of the central nervous system caused by the John Cunningham (JC) virus typically seen in immuno-compromised patients. Several drugs that suppress that immune system have already been known to cause PML such as natalizumab and rituximab. We present a patient with sarcoidosis who develops PML in the rare setting of minimal immunosuppression with only hydroxychloroquine. There was significant delay in the diagnosis due to negative cerebrospinal fluid testing for JC virus and concern for neuro-sarcoidosis, but eventually a diagnosis of PML was made via brain biopsy.

OBJECTIVE:To evaluate the effectiveness of cycling in combination with electroacupuncture in treatment of poststroke hemiplegia patients at National Hospital of Acupuncture,Vietnam.METHODS:The study was designed as a single-centre,outcome-assessor-blinded parallel randomised controlled trial with 120 post-stroke hemiplegia patients randomly assigned into two groups:electroacupuncture plus cycling(CT group) and electroacupuncture(AT group).Patients were assessed before and after the treatment(using muscle grading,modified Rankin,Barthel,Orgorozo scores and electromyography).Statistical Man–Whitney U test,and Fisher’s exact tests were used to compare between CT and AT groups.RESULTS:The results reported statistically significant improvement in motor function in patients suffering from hemiplegia following ischemic stroke in both CT and AT groups.Patients in CT group experienced a greater improvement compared to those in AT group including better muscle contraction(increased frequency and amplitude of electromyography and increased muscle grading scale);increased recovery(Orgogozo scale),increased independency(Barthel scale) and decreased disability(Modified Rankin scale)(P < 0.01).CONCLUSIONS:Combination with cycling training significantly improves the recovery of post-stroke patients treated with electroacupuncture.

The dual role of reactive oxygen and nitrogen species(RONS)in physiological and pathological processes in biological systems has been widely reported.It has been recently suggested that the regulation of RONS levels under physiological and pathological conditions is a potential therapy to promote health and treat diseases,respectively.Injectable hydrogels have been emerging as promising biomaterials for RONS-related biomedical applications owing to their excellent biocompatibility,three-dimensional and extracellular matrix-mimicking structures,tunable properties and easy functionalization.These hydrogels have been developed as advanced injectable platforms for locally generating or scavenging RONS,depending on the specific conditions of the target disease.In this review article,the design principles and mechanism by which RONS are generated/scavenged from hydrogels are outlined alongside a discussion of their in vitro and in vivo evaluations.Additionally,we highlight the advantages and recent developments of these injectable RONS-controlling hydrogels for regenerativemedicines and tissue engineering applications.

Importance:Nutritional status of infants,measured by birth weight and length,is an essential factor in neonatal development.Malnutrition in newborns may lead to a higher risk of mortality,neurological and cognitive impairment,and poor language development.Objective:This study aims to assess the nutritional status of infants and related factors regarding maternal anthropometric characteristics and medical history.Methods:A cross-sectional study was conducted at the National Hospital of Obstetrics and Gynecology,Vietnam from May 2021 to May 2022 on 340 infants and mothers.Low birth weight was defined following the Intergrowth-21 standards.Stunting was evaluated using the Fenton growth chart when the length was below the 10%percentile line of the gestational week.Multivariate regression models were applied to identify factors associated with the nutritional status of infants.Results:We found that 12.4%and 14.1%of infants in our study fell into stunted and underweight categories,respectively.Infants of mothers over 35 years old,having a height lower than 150 cm or experiencing anemia during pregnancy were more likely to be stunted or have low birth weight.Serum albumin deficiency during pregnancy was strongly associated with the infant being underweight(odds ratio[OR]=2.8,95%confidence interval[95%CI]1.1–7.3).Newborns were more likely to be stunted if their mothers had a history of preterm birth(OR=3.3,95%CI 1.1–10.2).Interpretation:Maternal nutritional status is closely related to infant malnutrition,particularly in preterm infants.Improving the understanding of mothers regarding prenatal care,reproductive healthcare,adequate nutritional diet,and multi-micronutrient supplements during pregnancy is therefore important.

The impairment of regenerative processes induced by high blood-glucose level(hyperglycemia) and excessive reactive oxygen species(ROS) contributes to the diabetic complication progression and development. In this study, an injectable, in situ crosslinkable chitosan hydrogel with ROS-scavenging capability was developed by conjugating gallic acid onto the chitosan backbone(CGA). We hypothesized that gallic acid serves as both antioxidant and crosslinking moieties to form hydrogel in situ by means of enzymatic crosslinking with horseradish peroxidase(HRP). The rapid gelation(from 30 s) was observed by vial tilting. The mechanical properties and microstructures of CGA hydrogels can be well controlled by varying the concentrations of H2O2. The ROSscavenging ability of these CGA hydrogels was demonstrated against DPPH radical, hydroxyl radical, and total reducing power. Notably, in an in vitro hyperglycemia environment, CGA hydrogels significantly improved the proliferation and migration of human dermal fibroblast cells, which are closely related to diabetic wound healing. These results suggest that CGA hydrogels have potential as advanced materials for the treatment of diabetes-related diseases via attenuating the excessive ROS production and improving cellular behaviors.

The incidence of inflammatory bowel diseases(IBD)is rising worldwide.The therapeutic options for IBD are expanding,and the number of drugs with new targets will rapidly increase in coming years.A rapid step-up approach with close monitoring of intestinal inflammation is extensively used.The fear of side effects represents one the most limiting factor of their use.Despite a widespread use for years,drug induced liver injury(DILI)management remains a challenging situation with Azathioprine and Methotrexate.DILI seems less frequent with anti-tumor necrosis factor agents and new biologic therapies.The aim of this review is to report incidence,physiopathology and practical guidelines in case of DILI occurrence with the armamentarium of old and new drugs in the field of IBD.

Changes of the blood vessels and collagen are associated with the development of abnormal cervical cells.Recently,optical coberence tomography and Mueller polarization images were 1used to provide information regarding the presence of collagen fibers in the cervical tissue.However,most of these methods need a lot of time for image recording and are expensive.In addition,the general survey on the absorption and distribution characteristics of collagen and blood in the cervical is still lacking.In this study,we developed a colposcopy combining cross-polarized inage and image procssing algorithm with an fficient analytical model to map the distribution of blood and collagen in the uterine.For this system's proof of concept,we captured and processed the case of cervical ectopy and Nabothian cyst.The results show that the distribution of blood and collagen maps matched with anatomical and physiological when compared with Lugol's iodline images.This technology has some advantages,such as low cost,real time,and can replace the 11se of acetic acid or Lugol's iodine in the future.
