Enlarged interlayer of separator coating enabling high-performance lithiumsulfur batteries

Lithiumsulfur batteries have been intensively studied due to their high theoretical energy density and abundant sulfur resources. However, their commercial application is hindered by the low redox kinetics and high sulfur losses. In principle, in the design of cathodes and separators, the adsorption toward lithium-polysulfides should be enhanced and the conversion of soluble high-order lithium-polysulfides should be catalyzed. Herein, a KV_(3)O_(8)·0.75H_(2)O separator is designed as an effective lithium-polysulfides mediator in lithiumsulfur batteries. The intercalated K+ would enlarge the interlayer spacing of vanadium oxides, preventing the collapse of the layer structure and improving the electrical/ion conductivity of the interface. Moreover, the KV_(3)O_(8)·0.75H_(2)O modified separator possess a prior adsorption and high redox kinetics toward lithium-polysulfides due to the enhanced diffusion kinetics, which guarantees the high-rate capability and efficient utilization of sulfur. As a result, lithiumsulfur batteries exhibit a high capacity of 1362 mAh·g^(-1) and a long lifespan with a low capacity loss of 0.073% per cycle. This work may provide an alternative way to establish a functional separator to balance the adsorption and conversion of polysulfides during the redox back and forth.

The combined effect of bromadiolone and ivermectin (iBr) in controlling both rodents and their fleas

Rodent pests not only cause severe agricultural loss but also spread zoonotic pathogens to human beings.Antico-agulant rodenticides are widely used to decrease the population densities of rodents but often lead to the spillover of ectoparasites becausefleas and ticks may gather on surviving rodents.Therefore,it is necessary to killfleas and ticks before culling rodents to minimize the risk of pathogen transmission.In this study,we used a mixture of ivermectin(an antiparasitic drug)and bromadiolone(an anticoagulant rodenticide)to control both rodent andflea/tick abundances.We found that in a laboratory test,0.01%ivermectin bait was not lethal for greater long-tailed hamsters after 7 days of treatment,while 0.1%ivermectin bait was lethal for approximately 33%of treated rodents.In afield test,bait containing 0.001%,0.005%,0.01%,and 0.05%ivermectin decreased the number offleas per vole of Brandt’s voles to 0.42,0.22,0.12,and 0.2,respectively,compared with 0.77 in the control group,indicating that 0.01%ivermectin bait performed best in removingfleas.In another laboratory test,bait containing a 0.01%ivermectin and 0.005%bromadiolone mixture caused the death of all voles within 6–14 days after the intake of the bait.In thefield test,the bait containing 0.01%ivermectin and 0.005%bromadiolone reduced the average number offleas per vole to 0.35,which was significantly lower than the 0.77 of the control group.Our results indicate that a 0.01%ivermectin and 0.005%bromadiolone mixture could be used to control both rodents andfleas to minimize the spillover risk of disease transmission when using traditional rodenticides.

Lattice Boltzmann simulation study of anode degradation in solid oxide fuel cells during the initial aging process

For present solid oxide fuel cells(SOFCs),rapid performance degradation is observed in the initial aging process,and the dis-cussion of the degradation mechanism necessitates quantitative analysis.Herein,focused ion beam-scanning electron microscopy was em-ployed to characterize and reconstruct the ceramic microstructures of SOFC anodes.The lattice Boltzmann method(LBM)simulation of multiphysical and electrochemical processes in the reconstructed models was performed.Two samples collected from industrial-size cells were characterized,including a reduced reference cell and a cell with an initial aging process.Statistical parameters of the reconstructed microstructures revealed a significant decrease in the active triple-phase boundary and Ni connectivity in the aged cell compared with the reference cell.The LBM simulation revealed that activity degradation is dominant compared with microstructural degradation during the initial aging process,and the electrochemical reactions spread to the support layer in the aged cell.The microstructural and activity de-gradations are attributed to Ni migration and coarsening.

Antibody-modified integrated microfluidic terahertz biosensor for detection of breast cancer biomarkers

Breast cancer is the most common malignant tumor in women,which seriously threatens the physical and mental health of women worldwide.The existing detection methods have problems,such as large sample consumption,time-consuming sample preparation,expensive equipment,and low sensitivity.In order to solve these problems,this paper proposes a method for quickly detecting breast cancer using surface-functionalized terahertz metamaterial biosensors.The use of PIK3CA-modified sensors enhances the detection sensitivity and specificity of exosomes.Based on the red shift of the sensor absorption peak caused by exosomes,breast cancer patients can be distinguished from healthy controls.This study demonstrates that exosome detection is effective for the repeatable and non-invasive diagnosis of breast cancer patients.The terahertz metamaterial biosensor designed in this paper has high specificity,repeatability,and sensitivity,and has great potential for application in the development of modern diagnostic instruments.

Carbon dioxide(CO_(2))emissions from the cement industry account for 26%of the total industrial emissions,and the need to develop low-carbon techniques within the cement industry is extremely urgent.Low-carbon projects and technologies for the cement industry in different regions and countries have been thoroughly reviewed in this manuscript,and the low-carbon development concept for each county has been analyzed.For developing countries such as China and India,energy saving and efficiency enhancement are currently the key points,while for developed countries and regions such as Europe,more efforts have been focused on carbon capture,utilization,and storage(CCUS).Global CCUS projects have been previously conducted,and the majority of CCUS projects are currently performed in Europe where major projects such as the CEMCAP,CLEANKER,and IEILAC projects represent the latest research progress in cement production technologies and low-carbon technologies for the global cement industry.The development of low-carbon cement technologies has changed from focusing on the end point to instead focusing on the source and process through the exploration of hydrogen and solar energies,and more disruptive and original technologies are expected to be developed,particularly in the cement industry in China.

Comparison of antimony and arsenic behaviour at the river-lake junction in the middle of the Yangtze River Basin

As typical metalloid toxic elements widely distributed in environmental media,the geochemical behaviour of antimony(Sb)and arsenic(As)affects environmental safety.We selected the surface waters and sediments at the river-lake junction of Dongting Lake as the research objects,analysed the concentration and chemical partitioning of Sb and As,assessed its contamination and ecological risk levels,and discussed its sources and potential influencing factors.The concentrations of dissolved Sb and As in surface waters were low(<5.46μg/L),and the concentrations of Sb and As in surface sediments were 2.49-22.65mg/kg and 11.10-136.34 mg/kg,respectively.Antimony and As in sediments were mainly enriched in the fraction of residues,but the proportion of As in bioavailability was significantly higher than that of Sb.Although the contamination level of Sb was higher than that of As,the risk assessment code(RAC)showed that the ecological risk level of As was higher than that of Sb.Rainwater erosion and mining activities(in the midstream of Zijiang River)were the main contaminated sources of Sb,while As was affect mainly by rainwater erosion.The contamination and ecological risk of Sb in the inlet of the Zijiang River should receive considerable attention,while those of As in the inlet of the Xiangjiang River should also be seriously considered.This study highlights the need for multi-index-based assessments of contamination and ecological risk and the importance of further studies on the environmental behaviour of metalloids in specific hydrological conditions,such as river-lake junctions.

Atherosclerosis is a leading cause of mortality and morbidity worldwide.Despite the challenges in managing atherosclerosis,researchers continue to investigate new treatments and complementary therapies.Cordyceps is a traditional Chinese medicine that has recently gained attention as a potential therapeutic agent for atherosclerosis.Numerous studies have demonstrated the effectiveness of cordyceps in treating atherosclerosis through various pharmacological actions,including anti-inflammatory and antioxidant activities,lowering cholesterol,inhibiting platelet aggregation,and modulating apoptosis or autophagy in vascular endothelial cells.Notably,the current misuse of the terms cordyceps and Ophiocordyceps sinensis has caused confusion among researchers,and complicated the current academic research on cordyceps.This review focuses on the chemical composition,pharmacological actions,and underlying mechanisms contributing to the anti-atherosclerotic effects of cordyceps and the mycelium of Ophiocordyceps spp.This review provides a resource for the research on the development of new drugs for atherosclerosis from cordyceps.

Mg-doped,carbon-coated,and prelithiated SiO_(x) as anode materials with improved initial Coulombic efficiency for lithium-ion batteries

Silicon suboxide(SiO_(x),x≈1)is promising in serving as an anode material for lithium-ion batteries with high capacity,but it has a low initial Coulombic efficiency(ICE)due to the irreversible formation of lithium silicates during the first cycle.In this work,we modify SiO_(x) by solid-phase Mg doping reaction using low-cost Mg powder as a reducing agent.We show that Mg reduces SiO_(2) in SiO_(x) to Si and forms MgSiO_(3) or Mg_(2)SiO_(4).The MgSiO_(3) or Mg_(2)SiO_(4) are mainly distributed on the surface of SiO_(x),which suppresses the irreversible lithium-ion loss and enhances the ICE of SiO_(x).However,the formation of MgSiO_(3) or Mg_(2)SiO_(4) also sacrifices the capacity of SiO_(x).Therefore,by controlling the reaction process between Mg and SiO_(x),we can tune the phase composition,proportion,and morphology of the Mg-doped SiO_(x) and manipulate the performance.We obtain samples with a capacity of 1226 mAh g^(–1) and an ICE of 84.12%,which show significant improvement over carbon-coated SiO_(x) without Mg doping.By the synergistical modification of both Mg doping and prelithiation,the capacity of SiO_(x) is further increased to 1477 mAh g^(–1) with a minimal compromise in the ICE(83.77%).

Performance analysis and multi-objective optimization based on a modified irreversible Stirling cycle

The efficiency of the actual Stirling engine is much lower than the ideal Carnot cycle efficiency. To obtain more precise efficiency for Stirling engines, this paper proposes a modified Stirling cycle with a more accurate heat transfer process in Stirling engines based on a thermodynamic function called available potential. The finite-time thermodynamic method is used to analyze the model performance under constant heat source temperature, finite temperature difference heat transfer, and incomplete regenerative processes. A new polytropic process is introduced to model the heat transfer between the working fluid and external heat sources in which only heat above ambient temperature is converted into technical work. The regenerator is divided into numerous smaller heat reservoirs with individual temperature to analyze the incomplete regenerative processes. The expressions of the output power and thermal efficiency are obtained based on the modified irreversible Stirling cycle, and the effects of irreversible losses are analyzed to evaluate the performance of the proposed model. Results indicate that the efficiency of the modified cycle is much lower than that of the ideal Stirling cycle with an isothermal process. With the increase of the average heat transfer temperature difference, there exists an optimum value for the power of the irreversible cycle. The optimum power of the model was obtained for varying thermodynamic parameters by optimizing the average heat transfer temperature difference between the hot and cold sides. To optimize the irreversible model, the multi-objective optimization analysis is carried out based on NSGA-Ⅱ, which results in an optimized output power of 40.87 kW and an optimized thermal efficiency of 44%.

Data-driven evacuation and rescue traffic optimization with rescue contraflow control

In response to local sudden disasters,e.g.,high-rise office or residential building fire disasters,road occupation can cause conflicts,and traffic directions may be opposite between evacuation vehicles and rescue vehicles;moreover,lane contraflow can be adopted to meet these surge traffic demands.However,lane contraflow that provides more roads for rescue vehicles reduces the traffic supply in the evacuation direction.It is unclear how to control the number of contraflow roads used by rescue vehicles to coordinate evacuation and rescue traffic operations.Here,we adjust the critical rescue traffic volume of reversing the normal road traffic direction to control rescue contraflow.Additionally,we propose a multiobjective mixed integer linear programming formulation for evacuation and rescue traffic optimization.Additionally,considering that the upper limit of the critical rescue traffic volume is unknown and that the proposed formulation includes multiple objectives and multi-priority vehicle classes,a three-stage solving algorithm is developed.Next,a large-scale evacuation and rescue traffic optimization result dataset is obtained for the Nguyen–Dupuis road network,and the impact of different rescue contraflow control plans on evacuation and rescue traffic is studied based on data-driven sta-tistical analysis.The results show that by adjusting the optimal rescue traffic route,the critical rescue traffic volume for reversing the normal road traffic direction can reduce the interference of rescue traffic to evacuation traffic operation performance without reducing rescue traffic operation performance,and can be used to coor-dinate evacuation and rescue traffic operation under rescue contraflow.
