Nitrite,a novel method to decrease ischemia/reperfusion injury in the rat liver

AIm:To investigate whether nitrite administered prior to ischemia/reperfusion(I/R)reduces liver ***:Thirty-six male Sprague-Dawley rats were randomized to 3 groups,including sham operated(n=8),45-min segmental ischemia of the left liver lobe(IR,n=14)and ischemia/reperfusion(I/R)preceded by the administration of 480 nmol of nitrite(n=14).Serum transaminases were measured after 4 h of *** microdialysate(mD)was sampled in 30-min intervals and analyzed for glucose,lactate,pyruvate and glycerol as well as the total nitrite and nitrate(NOx).The NOx was measured in ***:Aspartate aminotransferase(AST)at the end of reperfusion was higher in the IR group than in the nitrite group(40±6.8μkat/L vs 22±2.6μkat/L,P=0.022).Similarly,alanine aminotransferase(ALT)was also higher in the I/R group than in the nitrite group(34±6μkat vs 14±1.5μkat,P=0.0045).The NOx in mD was significantly higher in the nitrite group than in the I/R group(10.1±2.9μmol/L vs 3.2±0.9μmol/L,P=0.031)after the administration of *** ischemia,the levels decreased in both groups and then increased again during *** the end of reperfusion,there was a tendency towards a higher NOx in the I/R group than in the nitrite group(11.6±0.7μmol/L vs 9.2±1.1μmol/L,P=0.067).Lactate in mD was significantly higher in the IR group than in the nitrite group(3.37±0.18 mmol/L vs 2.8±0.12 mmol/L,P=0.01)during ischemia and the first 30 min of *** the same period,glycerol was also higher in the IRI group than in the nitrite group(464±38μmol/L vs 367±31μmol/L,P=0.049).With respect to histology,there were more signs of tissue damage in the I/R group than in the nitrite group,and29%of the animals in the I/R group exhibited necrosis compared with none in the nitrite *** nitric oxide synthase transcription increased between early ischemia(t=15)and the end of reperfusion in both ***:Nitrite administered before liver ischemia in the rat liver redu

Changes in physical activity,sedentary behavior,and self-reported cognitive function in cancer survivors before and during the COVID-19 pandemic:A cross-sectional study

The impact of gamma irradiation and storage on the physicochemical properties of tomato fruits in Ghana

Objectives:Tomato is a popular fruit that makes significant contributions to human nutrition for its content of sugars,acids,vitamins,minerals,lycopene,and other *** fruit,however,has a short shelf life due to its climacteric *** view of this,an experiment was conducted to determine the effect of postharvest treatment on the physicochemical properties of fresh tomato *** and methods:Freshly harvested tomato fruits were subjected to 0,1,2,3,and 4 kGy gamma radiation and stored at 10±1℃ and 28±1℃.Parameters analysed during the study include pH,total titratable acidity,weight loss,total solids,and moisture content of the ***:At both storage temperatures,results of the analyses were in the range of 2.80%-38.67%for weight loss,0.23%-0.51% for total titratable acidity,3.5%-5.0% for total soluble solids,94.43%-96.53% for moisture content,and pH was generally low in the samples stored at 10±1℃.Generally,gamma irradiation had an effect on the total soluble solids,total titratable acids,pH values,and moisture content and physiological weight loss at both storage ***:From the study,storing Burkina variety at a low temperature preserves the tomato fruits better than storing them at ambient temperature.

A Comparison between the metric Dimension and Zero Forcing Number of Trees and Unicyclic Graphs

The metric dimension dim（G） of a graph G is the minimum number of vertices such that every vertex of G is uniquely determined by its vector of distances to the chosen vertices. The zero forcing number Z（G） of a graph G is the minimum eardinality of a set S of black vertices （whereas vertices in V（G）／S are colored white） such that V（G） is turned black after finitely many applications of ＂the color-change rule＂： a white vertex is converted black if it is the only white neighbor of a black vertex. We show that dim（T） ≤Z（T） for a tree T, and that dim（G）≤Z（G）＋I if G is a unicyclic graph; along the way, we characterize trees T attaining dim（T） = Z（T）. For a general graph G, we introduce the ＂cycle rank conjecture＂. We conclude with a proof of dim（T） - 2 ≤ dim（T ＋ e） ≤dim（T）＋ 1 for e∈ E（T）.

Increased Filamentous Growth of Candida albicans in Simulated microgravity

Knowledge of simulated microgravity （SmG）-induced changes in the pathogenicity of microorganisms is important for success of long-term spaceflight. In a previous study using the high aspect ratio vessel bioreactor, we showed that the yeast species Saccharomyces cerevisiae underwent a significant phenotypic response when grown in modeled microgravity, which was reflected in the analysis of gene expression profiles. In this study, we establish that Candida albicans responds to SmG in a similar fashion, demonstrating that there is a conserved response among yeast to this environmental stress. We also report that the growth of C. albicans in SmG results in a morphogenic switch that is consistent with enhanced pathogenicity. Specifically, we observed an increase in filamentous forms of the organism and accompanying changes in the expression of two genes associated with the yeasthyphal transition. The morphological response may have significant implications for astronauts＇ safety, as the fungal pathogen may become more virulent during spaceflight.

Objective Anaemia is associated with higher mortality among patients with non-stroke cardiovascular conditions;less is known regarding the relationship between anaemia and mortality among patients with acute ischaemic *** medical records were abstracted for n=3965 veterans from 131 Veterans Health Administration facilities who were admitted with ischaemic stroke in fiscal year *** values within 24 hours of admission were classified as≤27%,28%-32%,33%-37%,38%-42%,43%-47% or≥48%.multivariate logistic regression was used to examine the relationship between anaemia and in-hospital,30-day,6-month and 1-year mortality,adjusting for age,medical comorbidities,modified Acute Physiology and Chronic Health Evaluation-III and stroke *** factors were calculated to standardise comparisons between haematocrit tier and other *** Among n=3750 patients included in the analysis,the haematocrit values were≤27%in 2.1%(n=78),28%-32% in 6.2%(n=234),33%-37%in 17.9%(n=670),38%-42% in 36.4%(n=1366),43%-47% in 28.2%(n=1059)and≥48% in 9.1%(n=343).Patients with haematocrit≤27%,compared with patients in the 38%-42% range,were more likely to have died across all follow-up intervals,with statistically significant adjusted ORs(aORs)ranging from 2.5 to *** with polycythaemia(ie,haematocrit≥48%)were at increased risk of in-hospital mortality(aOR=2.9;95%CI 1.4 to 6.0),compared with patients with mid-range admission *** differences between patients receiving and not receiving blood transfusion limited our ability to perform a propensity *** factors in the 1-year mortality model were 0.46(severe anaemia),0.06(cancer)and 0.018(heart disease).Conclusions Anaemia is independently associated with an increased risk of death throughout the first year post stroke;high haematocrit is associated with early poststroke *** anaemia is associated with 1-year mortality to a greater degree than cancer or heart dise

Experimental evidence for root competition effects on community evenness in one of two phytometer species

Aims Plant-plant interactions,being positive or negative,are rec-ognized to be key factors in structuring plant ***,it is thought that root competition may be less impor-tant than shoot competition due to greater size symmetry *** direct experimental tests on the importance of root competition are scarce,we aim at elucidating whether root competition may have direct or indirect effects on commu-nity *** effects may occur by altering the overall size asymmetry of competition through root-shoot competitive *** We used a phytometer approach to examine the effects of root,shoot and total competition intensity and importance on evenness of experimental plant *** two different phytom-eter species,Festuca brevipila and Dianthus carthusianorum,were grown in small communities of six grassland species over three levels of light and water availability,interacting with neighbouring shoots,roots,both or not at *** Findings We found variation in community evenness to be best explained if root and shoot(but not total)competition were ***,the effects were species specific:in Dianthus communities increasing root competition increased plant community evenness,while in Festuca communities shoot competition was the driving force of this evenness *** intensities were influenced by environmental conditions in Dianthus,but not in Festuca phytometer *** we found no evidence for root-shoot interactions for neither phytom-eter species root competition in Dianthus communities led to increased allocation to shoots,thereby increasing the potential ability to perform in size-asymmetric competition for *** experiment demonstrates the potential role of root competition in structuring plant communities.
