Environmental Justice through Community-Policy Participatory Partnerships

Geographical information systems (GIS) are often used to design environmental justice (EJ) policy interventions. Leveraging GIS and other graphics, overburdened EJ communities can learn from maps that geographically link environmental burden (EB) and social disparity (SD) data. Visually representing EB and SD data concretizes the unjust distributions of environmental and broader inequitable societal policies. These maps can be used to efficaciously assess EJ disparities created by such policies through exploring socioeconomic characteristics with local communities. Given the great variation in how GIS EJ applications measure and visualize EB and SD, we present a community-based participatory design (CBPD) lens to collaboratively work across overburdened communities and support making EJ data accessible to all stakeholders. Our location proximity approach is a powerful way to assess overburdened EJ communities because it relies on user-predefined boundaries, and it doesn’t use a single fixed unit of reference to prioritize areas of intervention. Moreover, most areal unit applications use ordinal measures, such as percentiles, and multidimensional indexes, which are intelligible to understand by many residents. Leveraging a community-based participatory design methodology, we present our novel Proximity to Hazards Dashboard (PHD) that includes data on asphalt plants and industrial corridors, hazards often missing from state-level dashboards but very relevant for city policymaking, as well as more traditionally used environmental hazard sources. The use of the tool by policymakers and community members suggests that EJ categorization should focus less on procedural benchmarks and more on systemic change for policy impacts in ways that sustain the participatory nature of our approach.

Background:Professional health organizations are not currently recommending Tai Ji Quan alongside aerobic exercise to treat *** aimed to examine the efficacy of Tai Ji Quan as antihypertensive lifestyle ***:Tai Ji Quan interventions published in English and Chinese were included when they involved healthy adults,reported pre-and postintervention blood pressure(BP),and had a non-exercise/non-diet control *** systematically searched 11 electronic databases for studies published through July 31,2018,yielding 31 qualifying controlled ***(1)evaluated the risk of bias and methodological study quality,(2)performed meta-regression analyses following random-effects assumptions,and(3)generated additive models representing the largest possible clinically relevant BP ***:Participants(n=3223)were middle-aged(56.6±15.1 years of age,mean±SD)adults with prehypertension(systolic BP(SBP)=136.9±15.2 mmHg,diastolic BP(DBP)=83.4±8.7 mmHg).Tai Ji Quan was practiced 4.0±1.4 sessions/week for 54.0§10.6 min/session for 22.3±20.2 ***,Tai Ji Quan elicited significant reductions in SBP(-11.3 mmHg,95%CI:-14.6 to-8.0;d+=-0.75)and DBP(-4.8 mmHg,95%CI:-6.4 to-3.1;d+=-0.53)***(p<0.001).Controlling for publication bias among samples with hypertension,Tai Ji Quan trials published in English elicited SBP reductions of 10.4 mmHg and DBP reductions of 4.0 mmHg,which was half the magnitude of trials published in Chinese(SBP reductions of 18.6 mmHg and DBP reductions of 8.8 mmHg).Conclusion:Our results indicate that Tai Ji Quan is a viable antihypertensive lifestyle therapy that produces clinically meaningful BP reductions(i.e.,10.4 mmHg and 4.0 mmHg of SBP and DBP reductions,respectively)among individuals with *** magnitude of BP reductions can lower the incidence of cardiovascular disease by up to 40%.

The collaboration tools offered by Cloud Computing have increased the need to share data and services within companies or between autonomous organizations. This has led to the deployment of community cloud infrastructures. However, several challenges will arise from this grouping of heterogeneous organizations. One of the main challenges is the management of trust between the actors of the community. Trust issues arise from the uncertainty about the quality of the resources and entities involved. The quality of a resource can be examined from a security or functional perspective. Therefore, ensuring security and monitoring the quality of resources is to ensure a high level of trust. Therefore, we propose in this paper a technique for dynamic trust management and quality monitoring of resources shared between organizations. Our approach consists, on the one hand, in evaluating the quality of resources based on quality of service measurement attributes and, on the other hand, in updating the trust values according to the information deduced from these measurements. The proposed framework is evaluated in terms of resource sharing success rate and execution time. Experimental results and comparison with TNA-SL and InterTrust models show that the framework can identify and track the behavior of malicious organizations with relatively low execution time.

Lymphoma of mucosa-associated lymphoid tissue(MALT lymphoma) is the most common extranodal B cell tumor and accounts for 8% of non-Hodgkin's lymphomas. Gastric MALT lymphoma is the best-studied example and is a prototypical neoplasm that occurs in the setting of chronic inflammation brought on by persistent infection or autoimmune disease. Cytogenetic abnormalities are commonly acquired during the course of disease and the most common is chromosomal translocation t(11;18)(q21;q21), which creates the API2-MALT1 fusion oncoprotein. t(11;18)-positive lymphomas can be clinically aggressive and have a higher rate of dissemination than t(11;18)-negative tumors. Many cancers, including MALT lymphomas, characteristically exhibit deregulated over-activation of cellular survival pathways, such as the nuclear factor-κB(NF-κB) pathway. Molecular characterization of API2-MALT1 has revealed it to be a potent activator of NF-κB, which is required for API2-MALT1-induced cellular transformation, however the mechanisms by which API2-MALT1 exerts these effects are only recently becoming apparent. The API2 moiety of the fusion binds tumor necrosis factor(TNF) receptor associated factor(TRAF) 2 and receptor interacting protein 1(RIP1), two proteins essential for TNF receptor induced NF-κB activation. By effectively mimicking ligand-bound TNF receptor, API2-MALT1 promotes TRAF2-dependent ubiquitination of RIP1, which then acts as a scaffold for nucleating and activating the canonical NF-κB machinery. Activation occurs, in part, through MALT1 moiety-dependent recruitment of TRAF6, which can directly modify NF-κB essential modulator, the principal downstream regulator of NF-κB. While theintrinsic MALT1 protease catalytic activity is dispensable for this canonical NF-κB signaling, it is critical for noncanonical NF-κB activation.
