Regional gray matter atrophy and neuropsychologcal problems in relapsing-remitting multiple sclerosis

In multiple sclerosis, gray matter atrophy is extensive, and cognitive deficits and mood disorders are frequently encountered. It has been conjectured that focal atrophy is associated with emotional decline. However, conventional MRI has revealed that the pathological characteristics cannot fully account for the mood disorders. Moreover, there is no correlation between cognitive disorders and MRI results in clinically isolated syndromes or in cases of definite multiple sclerosis. In this casecontrol study, voxel-based morphometric analysis was performed on 11 subjects with relapsing-remitting multiple sclerosis, and the results show that these patients exhibit gray matter atrophy. Moreover, the gray matter atrophy in the superior and middle gyri of the right frontal lobe in patients with multiple sclerosis was correlated with scores from the Hamilton Anxiety Rating Scale. The scores obtained with the Repeatable Battery for the Assessment of Neuropsychological Status were associated with gray matter atrophy in the middle gyrus of the left frontal lobe, the superior and middle gyrus of the right frontal lobe, the middle gyrus of the left cingulate, the superior and middle gyri of the left frontal lobe, and the triangular area of the left frontal lobe. However, there was no statistical significance. These findings suggest that the cingulate and frontal cortices of the dominant hemisphere are the most severely atrophic regions of the brain, and this atrophy is correlated with cognitive decline and emotional abnormalities.

Promoting ring-opening efficiency for suppressing toxic intermediates during photocatalytic toluene degradation via surface oxygen vacancies

Aromatic ring-opening process is well recognized as the rate-determining step for catalytic toluene degradation. In photocatalytic toluene degradation, the toxic intermediates w让h harmful effects may be generated. To clarify the precise reaction mechanism and control the toxic intermediates generation, a closely combined in situ DRIFTS and DFT calculation is utilized to address these important issues. We construct the BiOCl w让h oxygen vacancies (OVs) and reveal the structure of OVs. The defect level caused by oxygen vacancies could promote the light adsorption and charge separation, which further boosts the activation of ring-opening species and enhances the generation process of free radicals. The reaction energy barriers of four possible ring-opening processes on defective BiOCl (OVBOC) are all declined in comparison with perfect BiOCl (BOC). The existence of oxygen vacancies could smooth the ratedetermining step so the ring-opening efficiency of photocatalytic toluene degradation is highly increased. Most importantly, the methyl species would be further oxidized and tend to open the benzene-ring at benzoic acid on BOC while the ring would be broken at the benzyl alcohol on OVBOC. These results indicate that the toluene degradation pathway is shortened via the surface OVs, which enables the production of radicals with high oxidation capability for the accelerated chain scission of the ring-opening intermediates. Finally, the efficiency of the key ring-opening process could be enormously improved and toxic intermediates are effectively restrained. The present work could provide new insights into the design of high-performance photocatalysts for efficient and safe degradation of VOCs in air.

Holocene sea level trend on the west coast of Bohai Bay,China: reanalysis and standardization

Using 110 newly revised Holocene sea level indicators categorized into three types,sediments(67),shelly cheniers(27)and oyster reefs(16),this paper firstly provides a Holocene relative sea level curve,based on multiple approaches of litho-and biostratigraphies and sedimentary faces analysis,for the west coast of Bohai Bay,*** considerations,including indicative meaning,the paleo tidal pattern and range and conversion from mean tidal level to mean sea level,an apparent relative mean sea level(RMSL)curve was further *** systematical calibration using CALIB,those of the 48 reworked samples were further corrected for the residence-time ***,the younger ages for another 35 samples were chosen at the subsample *** result in a younger-oriented shift for about 0.5 *** local spatial factors,including neotectonic subsidence(average rate about 0.1 mm/a),self-compaction of unconsolidated sediments(between a few decimeters to about 6 m)and subsidence due to groundwater withdrawal(between a few centimeters to about 2.5 m),were quantitatively ***,the amended RMSL curve after eliminating all these local temporo-spatial factors is very likely to show non-existence of mid-Holocene highstand and imply potential influences of both ice-volume equivalent sea level and regional glacial isostatic *** it is still unable to divide both global and regional factors,the slowdown of sea level rise,in 7.5–6.8 ka with a maximum height less than+1 m,may constrain the model effort in the near future.

Dynamic Impact Factor Induced by Idling Vehicle-Bridge Coupling Vibration

To analyze the impact effect induced by vehicle-bridge coupling vibration during traffic congesting, hundreds and thousands of congestion scenarios consisting of various vehicle platoons were collected and used to develop vehicle models as well as traffic congestion load models. Furthermore, the idling vehicle-bridge coupling model was established by the finite element method and the congestion models were applied to calculate dynamic impact factors. Compared with the value specified in Chinese codes, the calculated values were 1.15-2.67 times as large as the latter, which indicates the impact factors caused by idling vehicle-bridge coupling under congestion situations were much larger than those in normal traffic conditions. As a result, a calibration factor of 1.7 was recommended for bridge design or evaluation when considering vehicle-bridge coupling vibration under heavy traffic congestion. The proposed analytical model, analysis method, and results could also be beneficial references to further investigation in this field.

Evaluating CMIP6 models in simulating the North Pacific decadal variability in sea surface salinity

The North Pacific sea surface salinity(SSS)decadal variability(NPSDV)and its potential forcing were evaluated from 25 coupled models of the Coupled Model Intercomparison Project phase 6(CMIP6)considering the prospects for decadal climate *** results indicated that the CMIP6 models generally reproduced the spatial patterns of *** large standard deviation of the SSS anomaly over the strong current regions,such as the Kuroshio-Oyashio Extension(KOE),North Pacific Current(NPC),California Current System(CCS),and Alaskan Coastal Current(ACC),is reflected in the two leading modes of NPSDV:a dipole with out-of-phase loadings in the KOE-NPC versus CCS-ACC and a monopole with positive loading over the *** order of modes is sensitive to individual models that exhibit discrepancies,especially in temporal phases and power *** autoregressive model of order-1 was used to reconstruct the NPSDV with several forcing *** generally weaker influence of forcings in an autoregressive model of order-1 is partly related to the overestimated response time of NPSDV relative to *** NPSDV variances originate from the persistence of SSS anomalies,but the dominant forcing factors are diverse among *** model diversity for the NPSDV simulation mainly arises from the influence of the tropical El Ni?o-Southern Oscillation through teleconnection on the North Pacific Oscillation or Aleutian Low with timescale ***,models that can reproduce the NPSDV well are not dependent on those with larger impacts from the North Pacific oceanic processes.

Trajectory Tracking of Autonomous Vehicle with the Fusion of DYC and Longitudinal–Lateral Control

The current research of autonomous vehicle motion control mainly focuses on trajectory tracking and velocity tracking. However, numerous studies deal with trajectory tracking and velocity tracking separately, and the yaw stability is seldom considered during trajectory tracking. In this research, a combination of the longitudinal–lateral control method with the yaw stability in the trajectory tracking for autonomous vehicles is studied. Based on the vehicle dynamics, considering the longitudinal and lateral motion of the vehicle, the velocity tracking and trajectory tracking problems can be attributed to the longitudinal and lateral control. A sliding mode variable structure control method is used in the longitudinal control. The total driving force is obtained from the velocity error in order to carry out velocity tracking. A linear time-varying model predictive control method is used in the lateral control to predict the required front wheel angle for trajectory tracking. Furthermore, a combined control framework is established to control the longitudinal and lateral motions and improve the reliability of the longitudinal and lateral direction control. On this basis, the driving force of a tire is allocated reasonably by using the direct yaw moment control, which ensures good yaw stability of the vehicle when tracking the trajectory. Simulation results indicate that the proposed control strategy is good in tracking the reference velocity and trajectory and improves the performance of the stability of the vehicle.
