Sperm head morphology is crucial for male factor infertility diagnosis and assessment of male reproductive potential.Severalcriteria are available to analyze sperm head morphology,but they are limited by poor methodology comparability and populationapplicability.This study aimed to explore comprehensive and new normal morphometric reference values for spermatozoa heads infertile Asian males.An automated sperm morphology analysis system captured 23152 stained spermatozoa from confirmed fertilemales.Of these samples,1856 sperm head images were annotated by three experienced laboratory technicians as“normal”.Weemployed 14 novel morphometric features to describe sperm head size(head length,head width,length/width ratio,and girth),shape(ellipse intersection over union,girth intersection over union,short-axis symmetry,and long-axis symmetry),area(head,acrosome,postacrosomal areas,and acrosome area ratio),and degrees of acrosome and nuclear uniformity.This straight-forwardmethod for the morphometric analysis of sperm by accurate visual measurements is clinically applicable.The measured parameterspresent valuable information to establish morphometric reference intervals for normal sperm heads in fertile Asian males.Thepresented detailed measurement data will be valuable for interlaboratory comparisons and technician training.In vitro fertilizationand andrology laboratory technicians can use these parameters to perform objective morphology evaluation when assessing malefertilization potential.

Long-term monitoring of environmental warfare agengts is a challenge for chemical gas sensors.To address this issue,we developed a 433 MHz passive wireless surface acoustic wave(WSAW)gas sensor for dimethyl methylphosphonate(DMMP)detection.This WSAW gas sensor includes a YZ lithium niobate(linbO_(3))substrate with metallic interdigital transducers(IDTs)etched on it,and an antenna was placed near the IDT.A DMMP-sensitive viscoelastic polymer fluoroalcoholpolysiloxane(SXFA)film was prepared on a linbO_(3) substrate,and mode modeling coupling was used to optimize the design parameters.The sensor can function properly in an environments between−30℃ and 100℃ with humidity less than 60%RH.When the wireless transmission distance was within the range of 0-90 cm,the sensor noise increased with distance,and the stability was less than 32°/h.While optimizing the film thickness of SXFA,a relationship was observed between sensor sensitivity and film thickness.When the film thickness of SXFA reached 450 nm,the optimal value was reached.At a distance of 20 cm between the transmitting and receiving antennas,DMMP was detected at different concentrations with the developed WSAW gas sensor.The lower detection limit of DMMP was 0.48 mg/m^(3),the sensitivity of the sensor was 4.63°/(mg/m^(3)),and repeatable performance of the sensor was confirmed.

Birds exhibit extraordinary mobility and remarkable navigational skills,obtaining guidance cues from the Earth’s magnetic field for orientation and long-distance movement.Bird species also show tremendous diversity in navigation strategies,with considerable differences even within the same taxa and among individuals from the same population.The highly conserved iron and iron-sulfur cluster binding magnetoreceptor(MagR)protein is suggested to enable animals,including birds,to detect the geomagnetic field and navigate accordingly.Notably,MagR is also implicated in other functions,such as electron transfer and biogenesis of iron-sulfur clusters,raising the question of whether variability exists in its biochemical and biophysical features among species,particularly birds.In the current study,we conducted a comparative analysis of MagR from two different bird species,including the migratory European robin(Erithacus rubecula)and the homing pigeon(Columba livia).Sequence alignment revealed an extremely high degree of similarity between the MagRs of these species,with only three sequence variations.Nevertheless,two of these variations underpinned significant differences in metal binding capacity,oligomeric state,and magnetic properties.These findings offer compelling evidence for the marked differences in MagR between the two avian species,potentially explaining how a highly conserved protein can mediate such diverse functions.

Effect of bubble morphology and behavior on power consumption in non-Newtonian fluids’aeration process

Due to a prolonged operation time and low mass transfer efficiency, the primary challenge in the aeration process of non-Newtonian fluids is the high energy consumption, which is closely related to the form and rate of impeller, ventilation, rheological properties and bubble morphology in the reactor. In this perspective, through optimal computational fluid dynamics models and experiments, the relationship between power consumption, volumetric mass transfer rate(kLa) and initial bubble size(d0) was constructed to establish an efficient operation mode for the aeration process of non-Newtonian fluids. It was found that reducing the d0could significantly increase the oxygen mass transfer rate, resulting in an obvious decrease in the ventilation volume and impeller speed. When d0was regulated within 2-5 mm,an optimal kLa could be achieved, and 21% of power consumption could be saved, compared to the case of bubbles with a diameter of 10 mm.

Effects of shore-normal coastal structure on medium-to long-term embayed shoreline evolution

Based on high-tide shoreline data extracted from 87 Landsat satellite images from 1986 to 2019 as well as using the linear regression rate and performing a Mann-Kendall(M–K)trend test,this study analyzes the linear characteristics and nonlinear behavior of the medium-to long-term shoreline evolution of Jinghai Bay,eastern Guangdong Province.In particular,shoreline rotation caused by a shore-normal coastal structure is emphasized.The results show that the overall shoreline evolution over the past 30 years is characterized by erosion on the southwest beach,with an average erosion rate of 3.1 m/a,and significant accretion on the northeast beach,with an average accretion rate of 5.6 m/a.Results of the M–K trend test indicate that significant shoreline changes occurred in early 2006,which can be attributed to shore-normal engineering.Prior to that engineering construction,the shorelines are slightly eroded,where the average erosion rate is 0.7 m/a.However,after shore-normal engineering is performed,the shoreline is characterized by significant erosion(3.2 m/a)on the southwest beach and significant accretion(8.5 m/a)on the northeast beach,thus indicating that the shore-normal engineering at the updrift headland contributes to clockwise shoreline rotation.Further analysis shows that the clockwise shoreline rotation is promoted not only by longshore sediment transport processes from southwest to northeast,but also by cross-shore sediment transport processes.These findings are crucial for beach erosion risk management,coastal disaster zoning,regional sediment budget assessments,and further observations and predictions of beach morphodynamics.

Mechanism investigation of A-site doping on modulating electronic band structure and photocatalytic performance towards CO_(2) reduction of LaFeO_(3) perovskite

Three kinds of metal atoms with different valence electronic configurations,Bi(6s^(2)6p^(3)),Y(4d^(1)5s^(2)),and Ce(4f^(1)5d^(1)6s^(2)),were selected to investigate the effect of A-site(La^(3+))doping on electronic band structure,photoelectric properties,and photocatalytic performance of LaFeO_(3) perovskite.It was identified that the Bi doped LaFeO_(3) presented significantly improved photocatalytic activity towards the reduction of CO_(2),while the Y or Ce doped LaFeO_(3) displayed decreased photocatalytic activity compared to the pristine LaFeO_(3).It was revealed that doping of all the three metal atoms resulted in narrowed band gap and thus extended light absorption of LaFeO_(3) by lowering its conduction band minimum(CBM).The recombination rate and mobility of the charge carriers were represented by the relative effective mass(D)between holes and electrons for pristine and A-site doped LaFeO_(3).The doping of Bi resulted in increased D value,attributed to the Bi 6s electron states at the valence band maximum(VBM),and thus promoted separation and transfer of the charge carriers and improved photocatalytic activity of LaFeO_(3).In contrast,the doping of Ce resulted in significantly decreased D value,induced by the highly localized Ce 4f hole states at the CBM,and thus higher recombination rate of the charge carriers and decreased photocatalytic activity of LaFeO_(3).Furthermore,the Y doped LaFeO_(3) with a slightly decreased D value presented slightly increased recombination rate of the charge carriers and thus decreased photocatalytic activity.Such a work provides new insights into the A-site doping in LaFeO_(3) perovskite,which should be helpful for optimizing the electronic band structure and activity of perovskite-type photocatalysts at atomic level.

The recycling and reutilization of spent lithium-ion batteries(LIBs)have become an important measure to alleviate problems like resource scarcity and environmental pollution.Although some progress has been made,battery recycling technology still faces challenges in terms of efficiency,effectiveness and environmental sustainability.This review aims to systematically review and analyze the current status of spent LIB recycling,and conduct a detailed comparison and evaluation of different recycling processes.In addition,this review introduces emerging recycling techniques,including deep eutectic solvents,molten salt roasting,and direct regeneration,with the intent of enhancing recycling efficiency and diminishing environmental repercussions.Furthermore,to increase the added value of recycled materials,this review proposes the concept of upgrading recycled materials into high value-added functional materials,such as catalysts,adsorbents,and graphene.Through life cycle assessment,the paper also explores the economic and environmental impacts of current battery recycling and highlights the importance that future recycling technologies should achieve a balance between recycling efficiency,economics and environmental benefits.Finally,this review outlines the opportunities and challenges of recycling key materials for next-generation batteries,and proposes relevant policy recommendations to promote the green and sustainable development of batteries,circular economy,and ecological civilization.

Alzheimer's disease (AD) is a neurodegenerative disorder associated with brain aging， and the accumulation of amyloid-beta (Aβ) and hyperphosphorylated Tau proteins are key pathological features. Currently， drugs for the treatment of AD are mainly single-targeted， but the complex pathogenesis of AD makes it difficult to achieve the desired results. Therefore， the development of multitargeted therapies is crucial for future interventions. Rice bran oil (RBO) has been recognized as an edible oil with several health benefits， but its effects on AD caused by brain aging remain underexplored. In this study， the effects of RBO on memory dysfunction in D-galactose (D-gal) mice and its molecular mechanisms were investigated via in vivo and in silico methods from the perspective of AD pathologies. Our results suggested that compounds in RBO could modulate the activities of β-site amyloid precursor protein cleaving enzyme 1 (BACE1)， mitogen-activated protein kinase 3 (MAPK3)， matrix metalloproteinase 3 (MMP3)， and intercellular adhesion molecule 1 (ICAM1)， leading to inhibition of Aβ accumulation and Tau protein hyper-phosphorylation. Moreover， RBO reduced Aβ-induced oxidative stress by inhibiting the activity of mouse double minute 2 homolog (MDM2) and cyclic adenosine monophosphate response element binding protein binding protein (CREBBP)， and attenuated neuroinflammation by inhibiting the activity of nitric oxide synthase 2 (NOS2) and reducing Aβ accumulation and Tau protein hyperphosphorylation. Additionally， α-linolenic acid in RBO exhibited inhibitory effects on D-gal-induced apoptosis in PC12 cells through modulation of NOS2， MDM2， ICAM1， and phospho-extracellular signal-regulated kinase 1/2 (p-ERK1/2). Similarly， stigmastanol inhibited apoptosis in D-gal-induced PC12 cells through the regulation of NOS2. Thus， RBO can be considered as a potential functional food to attenuate AD owing to its multicomponent and multitarget effects.

The mu oil tree(Vernicia montana Lour.) is a dioecious species, but the genetic mechanisms underlying its phenotypic sexual dimorphism are unclear. In this study, we determined two pivotal phases of sex differentiation of mu oil tree via morphological and histological analyses of unisexual flowers:(Ⅰ) differentiation of male or female primordia to produce staminate flowers(SFs) or transient hermaphrodite flowers(HFs),and(Ⅱ) complete abortion of stamens in transient HFs to generate pistillate flowers(PFs). A total of 1621 sex-biased genes were identified by comparative transcriptome analysis which exhibited elevated rates of protein evolution than unbiased genes. The female-biased genes were enriched in the production of defense compounds while male-biased genes were focused on the production of viable pollens. Transcriptomebased analysis revealed that the differentially expressed genes(DEGs) between PFs and SFs in phase Ⅰ involved in abscisic acid(ABA), auxin(AUX), cytokinin(CK), ethylene(ET), and gibberellin(GA) biosynthesis and signaling showed higher expression levels in males than in females in general, whereas the DEGs involved in jasmonic acid(JA) and salicylic acid(SA) pathways displayed opposite expression patterns. Moreover,differentially expressed endogenous ABA, AUX, GAs, JA, and SA exhibited consistent biased expression patterns with the DEGs by UPLC-MSbased analysis. Exogenous application of an anti-ethylene plant growth regulator could promote the development of stamens in PFs and generated HFs. Comparative transcriptomic and hormonal analyses of PFs and SFs in phase Ⅱ indicated an increase in ET concentration when abortion of stamens in PFs occurred. This study suggested that phytohormones play key roles in sex dimorphism and ET may determine the development of stamens in PFs of mu oil tree, which provides an insight into plant sex differentiation mechanisms.
