Antioxidant,anti-inflammatory and antinociceptive potential of Ternstroemia sylvatica Schltdl.&Cham

ObjectiveTo evaluate the anti-inflammatory, analgesic, antioxidant and acute toxicity of extracts obtained from a successive extraction with solvents of ascending polarity [hexane, hex; chloroform, CHCl3 and ethanol (EtOH)] of Ternstroemia sylvatica Schltdl. & *** antioxidant potential was evaluated by 2,2 diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl, the ferric reducing/antioxidant power assays and by determining the total phenolic content. The anti-inflammatory and antinociceptive effects were evaluated using the in vivo croton oil-induced ear edema, phorbol 12-myristate 13-acetate induced ear edema, carrageenan-induced paw edema, acetic acid-induced writhing and formalin murine models. The acute toxicity was tested using the Lorke’s method in *** EtOH extract was the most active for the antioxidant potential tests diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (68.70% inhibition), ferric reducing/antioxidant power [(2 431.30 ± 102.10) mmol Fep>2+p> and total polyphenols content (215.80 ± 8.50) meqAG/g]. The anti-inflammatory activity was evaluated by topical application of croton oil (2 mg/ear dose) where the EtOH extract showed the strongest activity compared to the control group (45.13% inhibition), whereas in the phorbol 12-myristate 13-acetate model, at the same dose, the CHCl3 extract showed the highest inhibition (42.88%). In the carrageenan induced edema model, the EtOH extract showed a stronger inhibition compared to indomethacin (56.34% and 50.70% at doses of 250 and 500 mg/kg of extract, respectively) during the first hour. Similarly, the same extract showed the highest analgesic activity (30.60% inhibition) in the acetic acid contortion assay, and in the formalin test it showed a greater effect with respect to the control group in both *** work confirms the value of Ternstroemia sylvatica as an important anti-inflammatory and analgesic plant, whose mechanism seems to be associated to its antioxidant effects, and supports

Relationship between lipoprotein （a） and micro/macro complications in type 2 diabetes mellitus： a forgotten target

Objectives Increased lipoprotein （a） serum concentration seems to be a cardiovascular risk factor; this has not been confirmed in extracoronary atherosclerosis complications. We therefore wished to gain a deeper insight into relationship between the plasma concentrations of lipoprotein （a） and the micro- and macro-vascular complications of type 2 diabetes mellitus and to identify possible differences in this association. Methods This is a descriptive observational cross-sectional study. Two-hundred and seventeen elderly patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus were included from the internal medicine outclinic. Anthropometric data, analytical data （insulin reserve, basal and postprandial peptide C, glycosylated hemoglobin, renal parameters, lipid profile and clinical data as hypertension, obesity, micro and macrovascular complications were collected. Results patients were grouped according to the type 2 diabetes mellitus time of evolution. The mean plasma concentration of lipoprotein （a） was 22.2± 17.3 mg/dL （22.1± 15.9 mg/dL for males, and 22.1 ± 18.4 mg/dL for females）. patients with hypertension, coronary heart disease, cerebrovascular accident, microalbuminuria and proteinuria presented a statistically significant increased level of lipoprotein （a）. Similarly, the patients with hyperlipoprotein （a）（≥30 mg/dL） presented significantly increased levels of urea and total cholesterol. In the multivariate regression model, the level of lipoprotein （a） is positively correlated with coronary heart disease and diabetic nephropathy （p 〈 0.01 and p 〈 0.005, respectively）. Conclusions The elevation of plasma levels of lipoprotein （a） are associ- ated with the development of coronary heart disease and diabe tic nephropathy. Therefore, we consider that the determination of lipoprotein （a） may be a prognostic marker of vascular complications in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus.

Background:None of the published studies involving cancer cachexia experimental models have included a measure of the severity of the syndrome like the scoring system previously developed for human *** aim of the present investigation was to define and validate a cachexia score usable in both rat and mouse tumor ***:In order to achieve this goal,we included in the study one rat model(Yoshida AH‐130ascites hepatoma)and two mouse models(Lewis lung carcinoma and Colon26 carcinoma).The Animal cachexia score(ACASCO)includes five components:(a)body and muscle weight loss,(b)inflammation and metabolic disturbances,(c)physical performance,(d)anorexia,and(e)quality of life measured using discomfort symptoms and behavioral ***:Using the ACASCO values,three cut‐off values were estimated by applying hierarchical cluster *** groups were originally described,one exactly below the observed mean,a second exactly over the mean,and two other groups adjusted to every cue(inferior and superior).The three cut‐off values were estimated through maximization of the classification *** was accomplished by using a similarity matrix based on the metric properties of the variables and assuming multinormal *** results show that the four groups were:no cachexia,mild cachexia,moderate cachexia and advanced ***:The results obtained allow us to conclude that the score could be very useful as an endpoint in pre‐clinical studies involving therapeutic strategies for cancer *** potential usefulness of ACASCO relates to the primary endpoint in pre‐clinical cancer cachexia drug evaluations.

Importance of telemedicine in diabetes care: Relationships between family physicians and ophthalmologists

Diabetic retinopathy(DR) is the worldwide leading cause of legal blindness. In 2010, 1.9% of diabetes mellitus(DM) patients were legally blind and 10.2% had visual impairment. The control of DM parameters(glycemia, arterial tension and lipids) is the gold standard for preventing DR complications, although, unfortunately, DR still appeared in a 25% to 35% of patients. The stages of severe vision threading DR, include proliferative DR(6.96%) and diabetic macular edema(6.81%). This review aims to update our knowledge on DR screening using telemedicine, the different techniques, the problems, and the inclusion of different professionals such as family physicians in care programs.

Bone Marrow Transplant Long-Term Survivors’ Satisfaction with Quality of Life: Comparison with a Control Group

purpose: To evaluate the global quality of life (QoL) of survivors with 10-year or more post-transplant, and to identify risk factors that interfere with well-being. Methods: This is a prospective analytic transversal study with 214 survivors of Bone Marrow Transplant (BMT) and 264 healthy people identified among blood donors, treated as the control group, of both sexes, 18 years or older. The protocol includes a demographic-socioeconomic questionnaire, World Health Organization Quality of Life (WHOQOL) and the Karnofsky performance Status Scale. Results: 53.7% of the survivor group members are satisfied with their QoL. A similar result can be found in the control group (54.2%). Chronological maturity, anxiety, sexual difficulty, and being a provider are factors that interfere negatively in the QoL of male survivors. In female survivors, the risk factors are anxiety, low educational level, not having a stable partner, being a provider, and not being Caucasian. Conclusions: Survivors are as satisfied with their QoL as the control group. QoL is understood as a perceptive process composed of objective (functional and relational capacity) and subjective phenomenon (perceptive composition).

portable diagnostic devices are a viable and low-cost alternative for the detection of pathogens, since they reduce the time of analysis of results availability. Ease of sample collection and quick diagnosis allow this new input to be applied in the diagnosis of the main contaminating microorganisms present in the water. Laboratory tests evaluated the technical viability of the diagnostic device, using commercial strains which were inoculated and optimized in the devices and their growth compared to the conventional method in petri dishes. Samples of 100 μL bacterial suspension were tested and compared with the traditional sample inoculation method. The device viability was determined by detecting characteristic bacterial colonies in a specific culture medium through the colorimetric development of the obtained colonies. The feasibility assessments allow us to affirm that the device enables both qualitative and quantitative detection of the target bacteria present in liquid samples, and is promising to be applied to assess the quality of water, food and environmental surfaces.

In this work, a dynamical model of the heartbeat is studied using nonlinear dynamics and considering the time delays inherent in the system. Two fixed points are associated to sustained oscillations which might be interpreted as the diastole and systole These parameters are associated with blood flow in human body called arterial pressure and are very important in the cardio-vascular diagnostic.

AIM: To determine the possible association of the ApoB100 (Xba Ⅰ ), ApoE (Hha Ⅰ ) and CYp7A1 (Bsa Ⅰ ) gene polymorphisms, with the development of cholesterol gallstone disease (GD) in a Mexican population. METHODS: The polymorphisms were analyzed by polymerase chain reaction followed by restriction fragment length polymorphism, in two groups matched by ethnicity, age and sex: patients with GD (n = 101) and stone-free control subjects (n = 101). RESULTS: Allelic frequencies in patients and controls were: 34.16% vs 41.58% (p = 0.124) for X+of ApoB-100; 4.46% vs 5.94% (p = 0.501) for E2, 85.64% vs 78.22% (p = 0.052) for E3, 9.90% vs 15.84% (p = 0.075) for E4 of ApoE; and 25.74% vs 27.72% (p = 0.653) for C of CYp7A1. Differences in genotypic frequencies between the studied groups were not significant (p polymorphisms and cholelithiasis in this high prevalent population.
