Objective: The influence of hormone replacement therapy (HRT) on hemostasis processes depends on the type of hormone,the combination of doses,the time of taking HRT,and the route of administration (oral,transdermal,implanted).The aim of the current study was to assess some parameters of coagulation,especially tissue factor pathway inhibitor (TFPI) and tissue factor (TF) in postmenopausal women using oral or transdermal ***: The study was conducted on 76 healthy women,including 46 women aged 44–58 years who were taking oral (26) or transdermal (20) HRT,and 30 women aged 44–54 years who did not take HRT as the control *** concentrations of TF,TFPI,thrombin-antithrombin complex (TAT),and D-dimer were performed by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA).Moreover,the concentration of fibrinogen and activity of protein C were measured by chromogenic and chronometric ***: We observed a significantly higher concentration of TF and a significantly lower concentration of TFPI in women taking oral and transdermal HRT in comparison with the control *** also found a significantly lower concentration of fibrinogen in women taking oral HRT *** control ***,no statistically significant changes in concentrations of TAT and D-dimer,or activity of protein C were ***: In this study,the occurrence of an increased TF concentration simultaneously with a decreased concentration of TFPI in women taking HRT indicates *** significant modification of TAT or D-dimer occurred,and thus there may not be increased risk of thrombosis.

The Role of Viral Infection in Inducing Variability in Virus-Free Progeny in Tomato

The effect of virus-host interactions on subsequent generations is poorly understood. The evaluation of the effects of viral infection on inheritance of quantitative traits in the progeny of infected plants and elucidation of a possible relationship between chiasma frequency in the infected plants and variability of traits in the progeny were investigated. The current study involved genotypes of four intraspecific hybrids of tomato （Solanum lycopersicum L.）, their parental forms and two additional cultivars. Used as infection were the tobacco mosaic virus （TMV） and potato virus X （PVX）. The consequences of the effect of viral infection were evaluated based on chromosome pairing in diakinesis and/or by examining quantitative and qualitative traits in the progeny of the infected tomato plants. Tomato plants infected with TMV ＋ PVX were found to differ in chiasma frequency per pollen mother cell or per bivalent. Deviations have been observed for genotypes of both F1 hybrids and cultivars. At the same time, differences in mean values of the traits under study have only been found for progeny populations （F2-F4） derived from virus-infected F1 hybrids, but not in the case of progeny of the infected cultivars. The rate of recombinants combining traits of both parents increased significantly （2.22-8.24 times） in progeny populations of hybrids infected with TMV＋PVX. The above suggests that the observed effects could be the result of modification of recombination frequencies that can be manifested in heterozygous hybrids and make small contributions to variability in cases of ＇homozygous＇ tomato genotypes （i.e. cultivars）.

In this work,we study a predator-prey model of Gause type,in which the prey growth rate is subject to an Allee effect and the action of the predator over the prey is determined by a generalized hyperbolic-type functional response,which is neither differentiable nor locally Lipschitz at the predator *** kind of functional response is an extension of the so-called square root functional response,used to model systems in which the prey have a strong herd *** study the behavior of the solutions in the first quadrant and the existence of limit *** prove that,for a wide choice of parameters,the solutions arrive at the predator axis in finite *** also characterize the existence of an equilibrium point and,when it exists,we provide necessary and sufficient conditions for it to be a center-type *** fact,we show that the set of parameters that yield a center-type equilibrium,is the graph of a function with an open *** also prove that any center-type equilibrium is stable and it always possesses a supercritical Hopf *** particular,we guarantee the existence of a unique limit cycle,for small perturbations of the system.

Mitochondrial selfish elements and the evolution of biological novelties

We report the present knowledge about RPHM21, a novel male-specific mitochondrial protein with a putative role in the paternal inheritance of sperm mitochondria in the Manila clam Ruditapes philippinarum, a species with doubly uniparental inheritance of mitochondria （DUI）. We review all the available data on rphm21 transcription and translation, analyze in detail its female counterpart, RPHF22, discuss the homology with RPHM21, the putative function and origin, and analyze their polymorphism. The available evidence is compatible with a viral origin of RPHM21 and supports its activity during spermatogenesis. RPHM21 is progressively accumulated in mitochondria and nuclei of spermatogenic cells, and we hypothesize it can influence mitochondrial inheritance and sex- ual differentiation. We propose a testable model that describes how the acquisition of selfish fea- tures by a mitochondrial lineage might have been responsible for the emergence of DUI, and for the evolution of separate sexes （gonochorism） from hermaphroditism. The appearance of DUI most likely entailed the invasion of at least 1 selfish element, and the extant DUI systems can be seen as resolved conflicts. It was proposed that hermaphroditism was the ancestral condition of bivalves, and a correlation between DUI and gonochorism was documented. We hypothesize that DUI might have driven the shift from hermaphroditism to gonochorism, with androdioecy as transi- tion state. The invasion of sex-ratio distorters and the evolution of suppressors can prompt rapid changes among sex-determination mechanisms, and DUI might have been responsible for one of such changes in some bivalve species. If true, DUI would represent the first animal sex-determination system involving mtDNA-encoded proteins.

In processes such as Fluid Coking^(™),agglomerate formation should be minimized since it reduces the yield of valuable products,and degrades operability because of the fouling of *** experimental model,consisting of an aqueous solution of gum arabic with a dye,has been successfully developed to simulate the formation of agglomerates in the Fluid Coking^(™)process,where bitumen is sprayed into a fluidized bed of coke particles The particles wetted by a spray could be predicted by assuming that all the particles in the wake of bubbles formed from the tip of the spray jet have been wetted by the injected *** transfer of liquid from particles wetted with the spray to dry bed particles was relatively ineffective,as the number of wet particles increased by only 50%.With successive liquid injections,the proportion of the liquid trapped in agglomerates increases in latter injections:large agglomerates from earlier injections accumulate above the grid and are carried by gas bubbles into the spray jet cavity,where they seed fresh agglomerates.

A qualitative correlation between friction coefficient and steel surface wear in linear dry sliding contact to polymers with SGF

In this paper we tried to present a qualitative correlation,based on extensive experimental determinations between the value and the evolution of the friction coefficient,wear,and contact temperature,in the case of linear dry contact,for thermoplastic material reinforced with short glass fibers(SGF)and various steel *** aim was to highlight the evolution of the wear process depending on the evolution of the friction *** a result,it was possible to graphically illustrate the evolution of the friction coefficient and the change of the wear process,emphasizing the abrasive,adhesive and corrosive *** evolution of the plastic material transfer function of the contact temperature,namely of the power lost by friction(product between the contact pressure and sliding speed,p and v)was aimed and it was *** has been demonstrated that in the case of a 30%SGF content it can reach and even exceed contact temperatures very close to the flow limit of the plastic *** tried,believing successfully,the graphic illustration of the evolution of the steel surface wear and of the contact temperature,depending on the friction *** influence of the normal load and sliding speed was evaluated in detail,but also the influence of the metallic surface roughness on the friction coefficient was discussed.

Warming induced changes in wood matter accumulation in tracheid walls of spruce

The warming-driven increase of the vegetation season length impacts both net productivity and phenology of plants, changing an annual carbon cycle of terrestrial ecosystems. To evaluate this influence, tree growth along the temperature gradients can be investigated on various organization levels, beginning from detailed climatic records in xylem cells’ number and morphometric parameters. In this study, the Borus Ridge of the Western Sayan Mountains(South Siberia) was considered as a forest area under rapid climate change caused by massive Sayano-Shushenskoe reservoir. Several parameters of the xylem anatomical structure in Siberian spruce(Picea obovata Ledeb.)were derived from normalized tracheidograms of cell radial diameter and cell wall thickness and analyzed during 50 years across elevational gradient(at 520,960, and 1320 m a.s.l.). On the regional scale, the main warming by 0.42°C per decade occurs during cold period(November–March). Construction of the reservoir accelerated local warming substantially since 1980, when abrupt shift of the cold season temperature by 2.6°C occurred. It led to the vegetation season beginning 3-6 days earlier and ending 4-10 day later with more stable summer heat supply. Two spatial patterns were found in climatic response of maximal cell wall thickness:(1)temperature has maximal impact during 21-day period, and its seasonality shifts with elevation in tune with temperature gradient;(2) response to the date of temperature passing +9.5°C threshold is observed at two higher sites. Climate change yielded significantly bigger early wood spruce tracheids at all sites, but its impact on cell wall deposition process had elevational gradient: maximal wall thickness increased by 7.9% at the treeline, by 18.2% mid-range,and decreased by 4.9% at the lower boundary of spruce growth;normalized total cell wall area increased by 6.2%-6.8% at two higher sites but remained stable at the lowest one. Dynamics of moisture regime and its reconstruction from a tree-ring width chronology of Pinus sylvestris in the downstream basin of the Selenga River, Russia

Regional tree-ring width chronology of the Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris L.) was constructed from 8 sites in the forest-steppe belt situated in the foothills of the Selenga River basin, Russia. Moisture information contained in tree-ring width chronology was obtained through linear regression reconstruction models of annual August–July precipitation and annual water discharge of the Selenga River during the period 1767–2015. Comparison of the smoothed series allowed estimating long-term variation component of these moisture regime parameters with a high precision. At the same time, regional drought indices are less correlated with pine radial growth, because they have contribution of the other environmental variables, which are much less reflected in the tree-ring of the investigated pine forest stands. Reconstructed dynamic of the moisture regime parameters is supported by documental evident of many socially significant events in the regional history, such as crop failures caused by both droughts and floods, and catastrophic fire in the Irkutsk City in 1879. Also, dependence of the amount of precipitation in the study area on the atmospheric circulation in Central Asia is revealed to have a similar pattern with other regions, i.e., a negative relationship of precipitation with the development of large high atmospheric pressure area within its center in the Altai and Tianshan mountains.
