Antioxidant effects of D-004, a lipid extract from the Roystonea regia fruit, on the plasma of healthy men

The aim of thisstudy was to conduct a randomized, double-blind and placebo-controlled study to investigate the effects of D-004, a lipid extract of the Roystonea regia fruit that prevents testosterone- and phenylepinephrine- induced prostate hyperplasia in rodents, on plasma oxidative markers in healthy men. We enrolled male volunteers （20-55 years） in good health and without lower urinary tract symptoms. Thirty-four eligible participants were randomized to placebo or D-004 （320 mg） capsules administered daily for 6 weeks. An interim check-up and a final visit were conducted after 3 and 6 weeks of therapy, respectively. Physical examinations were performed at each visit, and laboratory tests were performed at baseline and at treatment completion. Oxidative variables included plasma malondialdehyde （MDA）, total hydroxyperoxides （TOH）, sulphydryl （SH） groups and total antioxidant status （TAS）. We assessed treatment compliance and addressed adverse experiences （AEs） at weeks 3 and 6. At week 6, with D-004, the mean reductions of plasma MDA （26.7%）, TOH （18.8%） and SH groups （31.6%）, and the mean increase of TAS （35.3%） were significantly different from those of placebo （P 〈 0.001 for plasma TAS, P 〈 0.0001 for all other comparisons）. D-004 did not differ from the placebo in safety indicators. There were two withdrawals （both in the D-004 group）, with one due to dyspepsia （the only AE during the trial）. In conclusion, D-004 displayed antioxidant effects on plasma oxidative markers in healthy men, which was consistent with findings from laboratory experimental studies.

The Quantum-Mechanical Sensitivity of Cell Hydration in Mammals

The elucidation of the mechanism on the biological effects of weak chemical and physical factors on cells and organism is one of the modern problems in life sciences. According to the Receptor Theory of Prof. Bernard Katz the impact of the biological substances on cells is realized through the activation of ligand-gated ion channels in the membrane. However, this theory doesn’t provide a satisfactory explanation on the similar biological effects of extremely low concentrations of different chemical substances, which are unable to activate the ionic channels in the membrane and have non-linear dose-dependent effect on cells. Previously we have suggested that the metabolic control of cell hydration serves as a universal quantum-mechanical sensor for different weak physical and chemical signals. For supporting this hypothesis, in this article the comparative study of the effects of low concentrations of both cold (non-radioactive) and [3H]-ouabain (specific inhibitor for Na+/K+-ATPase) on the hydration in different tissues of rats has been performed. The obtained data have shown that cold and [3H]-ouabain have different effects on cell hydration and such a difference depends on the initial metabolic state of tissues. On the basis of our previous and present results it is suggested that such a quantum-mechanical sensitivity of cell hydration is realized through the cyclic-nucleotides-dependent Na+/Ca2+ exchange, having a crucial role in the metabolic regulation of cell hydration.

Recycling of Electronic Waste, Using Basic and Acid Leaching

This recycling of printed circuit board (TCI) for the production of metals, given the environmental degradation that can cause toxic substances of these, is the reuse of valuable materials recovered from the TCI, this being an economic engine that promotes the recycling of this waste. This paper presents a methodology for evaluating the reaction kinetics and leaching of metals that form the metal substrate, which have environmental and energy advantages, so the generation of new recovery techniques metals from the TCI low environmental and energy impact is increasingly necessary, for it is essential to establish the parameters affecting the reaction rate and identify design alternatives to determine whether or not sustainable, economically viable and that does not pollute. The method adopted was a leaching acid samples, where the full factorial method employed two experimental levels to evaluate the influence of: leaching time, temperature of the aqueous leach solution, reaction kinetics and solid/liquid, on the percentage of metal extraction. Subsequently, the metals are obtained by calcining and smelting the resulting salts by addition of acid liquor.

The Radioactive 45Ca Cannot Be Used for Adequate Estimation of the Functional Activity of 40Ca Ions in Cells and Organisms

Previously we have shown that nM ouabain-induced activation of cAMP-dependent Na/Ca exchange in reverse (R) mode in cell membrane has age-dependent weakening hydration effect on heart muscle and brain tissues and such Na/Ca exchange is characterized by quantum mechanical sensitivity. As in biological experiments radioactive 45Ca is used for the study of cold 40Ca exchange in cells and organisms, in the present work, the age-dependent effect of physiological solution (PS) containing either 40Ca or 45Ca on tissue hydration in different experimental conditions was studied in order to evaluate the bioequivalence of these two forms of Ca. The obtained data indicate that the intraperitoneal injections of 40Ca PS and 45Ca PS leading to activation of RNa/40Ca and RNa/45Ca exchanges, respectively, have different age-dependent effects on heart muscle and brain tissue hydration. As in myocyte membrane, the Na/Ca exchange is more expressed than in neuronal membrane, the age-dependent heart muscle hydration is more sensitive to quantum properties of Ca than brain tissue hydration. The [45Ca]i, in contrary to [40Ca]i, has age-dependent weakening and stabilizing effect on tissue hydration and makes the latter insensitive to ouabain. The obtained data bring us to a strong conclusion that RNa/Ca exchange has quantum mechanical properties and in biological experiments radioactive 45Ca cannot be used for adequate estimation of the functional activity of 40Ca ions in cells and organisms.

Effect of Ligands to Toll-Like Receptors (TLR) 3, 7 and 9 on Mice Infected with Mouse Hepatitis Virus A59

Mice infected with mouse hepatitis virus A59 (MHV-A59), an enveloped, positive-strand RNA Co-ronavirus, induce hepatitis, thymus involution, IgG2a-restricted hypergammaglobulinaemia, transaminase release and autoantibodies (autoAb) to liver and kidney fumarylacetoacetate hy-drolase (FAH). Since Toll-like receptors (TLR) play a central role in innate immunity, we explored the effects of TLR3, 7 and 9 stimulation on MHV mouse infection. Thus, the animals were treated with Poly (I:C), Loxoribine and CpG, the respective TLR ligands. MHV-infected mice inoculated with Poly (I:C) had significant lower levels of plasma transaminases and Ig, anti-MHV Ab, and uric acid than MHV-infected animals, whereas autoAb to kidney tissue were observed. Loxoribine only produced a slight decrease of uric acid levels and serum Ig. CpG showed deleterious effects on MHV-infected mice, since survival of animals dramatically dropped to about 10%. AutoAb to murine tissues and uric acid release were not affected, whereas transaminases and anti-MHV Ab were slightly elevated. Besides, CpG administration produced a decrease of the high levels of serum Ig induced by the virus. Therefore, results indicated that TLR3 stimulation appeared to protect the animals against the viral infection, whereas CpG aggravated its signs. Loxoribine, the TLR7 ligand, did not show major effects.

In this research, it used advanced oxidation processes for the recovery, detoxification and mineralization of wastewater mainly contaminated by antibiotics （ciprofloxacin）. These processes can be used alone or in combination with each other or by complementing traditional methods, even allowing the disinfection of bacterial and viral inactivation. With the use of experimental systems UV/H202/O3, UV/H202, it can achieve total mineralization of the compound. Ciprofloxacin solutions used at 50, 100, 200, 300, 400 and 500 ppm, degraded to 100% of antibiotics and by a microbiological method show that the loss of biological activity is inversely proportional to the time of irradiation.

A new metal-organic hybrid compound?[Fe(O3C4)(COO)]·H2O I has been hydrothermally synthesized and characterized by single-crystal X-ray diffraction. Rust crystals crystallize in the monoclinic system, space group I2/a, a = 6.9651(2) A, b = 8.12630(10) A, c = 19.4245(2) A, β = 92.6600(10)°;V = 1098.25(4) A3;Z = 2 and Dx =3.63g/cm3. The refinement converged into R = 0.042;Rw = 0.058. The structure, determined by single crystal X-ray diffraction, consists of a network of FeO6 centers, octahedral coordinated by btec (btec = 1,2,4,5-benzenetetracarboxylic acid) anions giving rise to a two-dimensional sheet structure. In the compound I,?[Fe(O3C4)(COO)]·H2O, the FeO6 group bridged by the 1,2,4,5-benzenetetracarboxyl anion exist in a unit cell, with each anion lying about an inversion centre. One of the FeO2 adistance [1.965(2)] significantly corresponds to the shortest distance as the other and the distances found in the axial direction of compound I.
