BACKGROUND(-)-Fenchone is a bicyclic monoterpene present in essential oils of plant species,such as Foeniculum vulgare and Peumus boldus,used to treatment of gastrointestinal *** studies report its anti-inflammatory,antioxidant,and antinociceptive *** To investigate antidiarrheal activity related to gastrointestinal motility,intestinal secretion and antimicrobial *** A castor oil-induced diarrhea model was used to evaluate antidiarrheal *** transit and gastric emptying protocols were used to assess a possible antimotility *** receptors,presynaptic α2-adrenergic and tissue adrenergic receptors,KATP channels,nitric oxide were investigated to uncover antimotility mechanisms of action and castor oil-induced enteropooling to elucidate antisecretory *** antimicrobial activity was evaluated in the minimum inhibitory concentration model,the fractional inhibitory concentration index using the(-)-fenchone association method with standard antifungal ***(-)-Fenchone(75,150 and 300 mg/kg)showed antidiarrheal activity,with a significant decrease in the evacuation *** activity is possibly related to a percentage of reduced intestinal transit(75,150 and 300 mg/kg).The antimotility effect of(-)-fenchone decreased in the presence of pilocarpine,yohimbine,propranolol,L-NG-nitroarginine methyl ester or *** the enteropooling model,no reduction in intestinal fluid weight was observed.(-)-Fenchone did not show antibacterial activity;on the other hand,inhibits the growth of strains of fungi with a minimum fungicide concentration of 32μg/***,when it was associated with amphotericin B,no synergism was *** The antidiarrheal effect of(-)-fenchone in this study involves antimotility effect and not involve antisecretory mechanisms.(-)-Fenchone presents antifungal activity;however,it did not show antibacterial activity.

To contribute to the empirical literature on innovation in non-profit organizations,this study examines innovation in Private Social Solidarity Institutions with social responses for the elderly in Northern *** enriches the literature by clarifying the concept of innovation applied to non-profit organizations,which represents a perspective different from the business ***,it is important to support the innovation decisionmaking process in similar non-profit *** this study,the population was surveyed through questionnaires based on the PUBLIN research project,which has already been applied in different countries,and the targets were employees of organizations with social responses for the *** sample is small,with 28 respondent institutions and 51 employees,but it is representative,as it includes institutions from all districts in Northern *** study employed a quantitative approach,particularly factor analysis,multiple linear regression,and correlation analyses,using scales already applied in other dimensions of the social sector,to understand the effect of each innovation dimension/determinant on creativity and innovation in nonprofit *** results show that in these organizations with social responses for the elderly,learning orientation,risk-taking,and job satisfaction have a positive impact on innovation.

Aims Soil plays an important role in the formation and heterogene-ity of habitats and thus can cause changes in vegetation struc-ture and plant *** differentiation between Cerrado/savanna and forest is well known,but the relationship between soil and habitats from savannic or forest formations still needs to be better understood,particularly in tropical ecotonal *** studied the association between attributes of plant com-munities,namely structure and diversity,and physicochemical characteristics of soils in the Caatinga domain at the transition to Cerrado in *** Chemical and physical analyses of soils were performed in samples of 38 plots from savannic formations and 30 plots from forest *** was characterized floristically and structurally in all plots,five habitats being assessed in each plant *** features and vegetation parameters were highly distinct among the different *** Findingsin general,forest habitats were more nutrient rich than savannic ***,soil variables showed effects both on vegetation structure and on its species diversity,more pronouncedly in the savannic *** were structurally distinct,and diversity differed between savannic and forest communities;however,a higher differentiation occurred when the savannic formation habitats were compared among *** plant diversity did not differ among forest formation habitats,soil attributes showed a close relationship with edaphic factors and can contribute for similar *** soil-vegetation relationship in highly diverse ecotonal landscapes is important from the conservation biology point of view and aid in the execution of proactive plans for the maintenance of ***,we noticed that diversity and soil behaves distinctly between savannic and forest communities.

Some types of plant accumulate liquid in their inflorescences creating *** environments protect the flowers against florivory,although they may be colonized by aquatic or semiaquatic florivorous insect larvae,whose effects on the fitness of the plants remain *** tested the hypothesis of floral antagonism by the occupants of phytotelmata,which predicts that florivory by the occupants of the phytotelmata represents a cost to the female fitness of the plant,reducing its *** manipulated experimentally the infestation by 3 florivores larvae species occupants of phytotelmata in inflorescences of Heliconia spathocircinata(Heliconiaceae)to test for negative direct trophic effects on the fecundity of the flowering and fruiting *** found that the foraging of the hoverfly(Syrphidae)and moth(Lepidoptera)larvae in the inflorescences contributed to a decline in the fecundity of the *** the lepidopteran impacted fecundity when foraging in both flowering and fruiting bracts,the syrphid only affected the fruiting bracts,which indicates that the nectar and floral tissue are the principal resource exploited by the *** contrast,soldier fly(Stratiomyidae)had a neutral effect on fecundity,while foraging in flowering or fruiting *** findings corroborate our hypothesis,that herbivory by the larval occupants represents cost to the host plant having *** negative influence of this foraging on plant fecundity will nevertheless depend on the consequences of the exploitation of resources,which vary considerably in ephemeral habitats such as the phytotalmanta of flower parts.

Cardanol is a biobased raw material derived from cashew nut shell liquid. In order to extend its utility, new derivatives and additional applications are useful. In this work cardanol was first epoxidized, and a novel aniline derivative prepared from it under mild reaction conditions with the help of an ionic liquid catalyst. The reaction chemistry was studied by using nuclear magnetic reso- nance. The resulting aminohydrin adduct showed antiox- idant property and should also be a useful synthon for further reactions. As an example, the aminohydrin was shown to undergo a condensation reaction with formalde- hyde to form a prepolymer, which could be further reacted to form thermosetting resins.

Outgrower Schemes have been implemented in different parts of the world to provide wood to forest and other companies and as income alternatives for farmers in rural areas. They have been considered by some researchers and practitioners as important advances in the area of planted forest and promoted by governments and forest companies in partnership with rural farmers and communities. Considering the importance of subsistence crops and forest products to smallholders and consumers and the economic viability of agroforestry, attention is given in this paper to Outgrower Schemes that combine tree planting with agroforestry, to contribute to food security and environment preservation in developing countries. The issue of Outgrower Schemes through integrated crops-tree systems was raised in a previous study of Outgrower Schemes in Brazil, commissioned by the FAO1. This paper examines, based on the research done for that study, the views and perspectives of the companies＇ personnel, the tree growers that participate in the programs studied, and other stakeholders＇ related institutions involved in such schemes with regard to the promotion of Outgrower Schemes through integrated crops-tree systems, linking them with agroforestry, which is a way those Outgrower Schemes can contribute to food security and environment preservation goals.

AIM:To ascertain the role of cardiovascular risk factors,cardiovascular diseases,standard treatments and other diseases in the development of ischemic colitis(IC).METHODS:A retrospective,case-control study was designed,using matched data and covering 161 incident cases of IC who required admission to our hospital from 1998 through *** was diagnosed on the basis of endoscopic findings and diagnostic or compatible *** were randomly chosen from a cohort of patients who were admitted in the same period and required a colonoscopy,excluding those with diagnosis of *** were matched with controls(ratio 1:2),by age and sex.A conditional logistic regression was ***:A total of 483 patients(161 cases,322 con-trols)were included;mean age 75.67±10.03 years,55.9%*** principal indications for colonos-copy in the control group were lower gastrointestinal hemorrhage(35.4%),anemia(33.9%),abdominal pain(19.9%)and diarrhea(9.6%).The endoscopic findings in this group were hemorrhoids(25.5%),diverticular disease(30.4%),polyps(19.9%)and colorectal cancer(10.2%).The following variables were associated with IC in the univariate analysis:arterial hypertension(P= 0.033);dyslipidemia(P<0.001);diabetes mellitus(P =0.025);peripheral arterial disease(P=0.004);heart failure(P=0.026);treatment with hypotensive drugs(P=0.023);angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibitors;(P=0.018);calcium channel antagonists(P=0.028);and acetylsalicylic acid(ASA)(P<0.001).Finally,the following variables were independently associated with the development of IC:diabetes mellitus[odds ratio(OR)1.76,95%confidence interval(CI):1.001-3.077,P=0.046];dyslipidemia(OR 2.12,95%CI:1.26-3.57,P=0.004);heart failure(OR 3.17,95%CI:1.31-7.68,P=0.01);peripheral arterial disease(OR 4.1,95%CI:1.32-12.72,P=0.015);treatment with digoxin(digitalis)(OR 0.27,95%CI:0.084-0.857,P=0.026);and ASA(OR 1.97,95%CI:1.16-3.36,P=0.012).CONCLUSION:The development of an episode of IC was independently associat

Fertilization is required for optimum plant growth, particularly in unfertile soils, while optimizing nutrient use effciency is an alternative to reduce inorganic fertilizer needs and reduce environmental problems caused by nutrient leaching. This study investigated soil properties and cowpea yield responses to biochars(BCs) made from different feedstocks, baby corn peel biochar(BC1), branches of mango tree biochar(BC2), and rice husk biochar(BC3), applied in combination with nitrogen-phosphorus-potassium(NPK) *** experiment was conducted in a greenhouse, using an acid sandy soil(Arenosol) that was submitted for 70 d to the following eight treatments: i) control;ii) full dose of NPK(a commercial compound fertilizer(12-24-12 of N-P2O5-K2O)+ urea(46% N));iii) BC1+ half dose of NPK;iv) BC1 + full dose of NPK;v) BC2 + half dose of NPK;vi) BC2 + full dose of NPK;vii) BC3 + half dose of NPK;and viii) BC3 + full dose of NPK. All biochars were applied at a rate of 0.9%(weight/weight), and each type of biochar was combined with half and full doses of NPK fertilizers. Soil pH increased significantly(P < 0.05) in treatments with BC1 and BC2,while cation exchange capacity(CEC) and available P were higher in the treatments with BC1;BC1 and BC2 also induced higher activity of enzymes related to the P cycle and higher cowpea yield. Similar soil properties and cowpea yield parameters were obtained with the full and half doses of NPK fertilizers for each type of biochar used. In conclusion, biochars in the combination with NPK fertilizers improved soil chemistry and enzymatic activities, allowing reduced fertilizer application and food production costs in the acid soil studied.
