Mycoplasma hyopneumoniae, cause of enzootic pneumonia is known for serious economic losses in pigs. The disease is prevalent all over the world. There is no published report on Mycoplasma hyopneumoniae incidence in Grenadian pigs. The aim of this study was to estimate seroprevalence of antibodies for Mycoplasma hyopneumoniae in non vaccinated pigs in Grenada. Sera were collected randomly from 459 pigs of all ages from all six parishes of Grenada. Sera were tested for antibodies to Mycoplasma hyopneumoniae using an indirect Enzyme Linked Immunosorbant Assay (ELISA) kit. Antibodies to Mycoplasma hyopneumoniae were found in 8.71% (95% CI: 0.0644 to 0.1167) pigs. The greatest percent of positives (62.5%) (95% CI: 0.4699 to 0.7582) were in youngest group 22.5% (95% CI: 0.1211 to 0.3771) in >2 year. Positive females were overrepresented compared to males by 3:1. This is the first report on the sero-prevalence of Mycoplasma hyopneumoniae in pigs from Grenada, West Indies.

Repaglinide is type 2 short acting anti-diabetic drug which is primarily metabolized by CYP2C8 and CYP3A4 and is also a substrate of influx transporter OATP1B1. HIV drugs are potent inhibitors of CYP3A4 and OATP transporters. Several drug-drug interactions (DDIs) were noticed when protease inhibitors (PIs) coadministered with drugs metabolized by CYP3A4. The PIs are also potent mechanism based inhibitors, out which ritonavir is most potent. In the current study we evaluated in vitro (mouse and human liver microsomes) and in vivo DDIs of repaglinide with anti-HIV drugs. Out of the following tested drugs (Amprenavir, Indinavir, Nelfinavir, Ritonavir, Saquinavir, Delavirdine, Maraviroc, Efavirenz, Nevirapine and Ketoconazole) Amprenavir (APV), Ritonavir (RTV) and Ketoconazole (KTZ) showed inhibition of OH-repaglinide formation in human and mouse liver microsomes. The positive reversible inhibitions were further tested for irreversible inhibitions where we didn’t observe any irreversible inhibitions. In vitro inhibitions were further evaluated in the in vivo pharmacokinetics (mouse) where repaglinide pharmacokinetics was altered by RTV and KTZ. The DDIs in both studies were very strong;the dose of repaglinide is reduced to 20 fold. In conclusion, there could be possible DDIs when RTV dosed with repaglinide;we have also demonstrated that mouse could be useful preclinical tool when used in conjunction with in vitro screening models for DDIs.

Seroprevalence of Bluetongue Virus Antibody in Ruminants from Grenada

The aim of the present study was to estimate the seroprevalence of antibodies to bluetongue virus (BTV) among domestic ruminants of Grenada. Sera samples from cattle (133), goat (314) and sheep (481) were tested using competitive Enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (c-ELISA). Of the total of 928 samples tested, the overall BTV seroprevalence was 78.4% (95% confidence interval (CI ± 2.65). The seropositivity of ovine, caprine and bovine was found to be 71.7% (95% CI, 67.67% to 75.73%), 80.2% (95% CI, 75.79% to 84.61%) and 98.5% (95% CI, 96.43% to 100.57%), respectively. There was statistical significance in the seroprevalence of BTV among bovine, caprine and ovine (p < 0.05). It is evident from this study that blue tongue virus is endemic in Grenada.

As per tradition from hundreds of years the Koloi tribes of Tripura are preparing “Gora”-therice based fermented beer which is very good in taste and aroma applying their traditional indigenous brewing techniques. In this study, an attempt has been made to identify the indigenous yeast which is the main causative agent for fermentation and to investigate its fermentation ability with an industrial Saccharomyces cerevisiaes train. After investigation based on culture dependent phenotypic characteristics like-staining and biochemical characterization, primarily the responsible yeast species was determined as Pichia kudriavzevii and further confirmed followed by 18S rRNA ribotyping and the sequences was deposited at Gene bank and NCBI bearing specific accession number. In the comparative analysis, it has been found a significant similarities in all aspects of nutritional and alcohol percentages with the industrial strain in laboratory condition. The alcohol percentage in the rice beer “Gora” measured 6.40 ± 0.008% v/v. The study may be the first scientific investigation of its kind about this indigenous yeast strain isolated from “Gora” of this Indo-Burma biodiversity region and may provide sufficient background and potentiality for promoting these kinds of indigenous alcoholic beverages for small scale commercialization to strengthen the rural livelihood as well as to maintain immaterial cultural heritage.
