Trafficking of Vietnamese women and girls for marriage in China

Background:Bride-trafficking has been a growing phenomenon in Southeast Asia,particularly in China,where one-child policies have resulted in demographic imbalances favoring ***,empirical evidence about women and girls sold into marriage in China remains ***:This study describes the experiences of 51 Vietnamese women and girls as young as 14 in post-trafficking services who were sold into marriage in China.A consecutive sample of individuals from five services in Vietnam were invited to be interviewed within the first 2 weeks of *** is part of a wider dataset for research on the health of men,women,and children in post-trafficking services in Cambodia,Thailand,and Vietnam,the largest study to date on human trafficking and *** calculated proportions for all variables and conducted bivariate analyses using Fisher Exact Tests for their associations with mental health disorders ***:Before leaving home,31%(n=15)participants were *** reported high levels of sexual violence(n=43;86%)while trafficked and59%(n=30)spent time in detention before returning to *** in post-trafficking care 52.9%(n=27)reported probable depression,anxiety or post-traumatic stress disorders(PTSD),two women(4%)attempted suicide in the past month and 38(75%)remained afraid of their ***(22%)became pregnant while trafficked,and seven(16%)were pregnant at the ***:The cross-border bride trade between Vietnam and China raises complex policy issues,including questions about detention and immigration rights and strategies for supported return processes,including maternal and child health *** the repercussions of China’s absent female population will persist,Vietnam and China must grapple with the political and social conditions to implement prevention strategies,and resources for women who fall prey to this cross-border bride trade.

Creeping fat and gut microbiota in Crohn’s disease

In this article,we explored the role of adipose tissue,especially mesenteric adipose tissue and creeping fat,and its association with the gut microbiota in the pathophysiology and progression of Crohn’s disease(CD).CD is a form of inflammatory bowel disease characterized by chronic inflammation of the gastrointestinal tract,influenced by genetic predisposition,gut microbiota dysbiosis,and environmental *** microbiota plays a crucial role in modulating immune response and intestinal inflammation and is associated with the onset and progression of ***,visceral adipose tissue,particularly creeping fat,a mesenteric adipose tissue characterized by hypertrophy and fibrosis,has been implicated in CD pathogenesis,inflammation,and *** bacteria from the gut microbiota may translocate into mesenteric adipose tissue,contributing to the formation of creeping fat and influencing CD *** creeping fat may be a protective barrier against bacterial invasion,its expansion can damage adjacent tissues,leading to *** gut microbiota through interventions such as fecal microbiota transplantation,probiotics,and prebiotics has shown potential in managing ***,more research is needed to clarify the mechanisms linking gut dysbiosis,creeping fat,and CD progression and develop targeted therapies for microbiota modulation and fat-related complications in patients with CD.

Interaction between diet and genetics in patients with inflammatory bowel disease

In this editorial,we comment on the article by Marangoni et al,published in the recent issue of the World Journal of Gastroenterology 2023;29:5618-5629,about“Diet as an epigenetic factor in inflammatory bowel disease”.The authors emphasized the role of diet,especially the interaction with genetics,in promoting the inflam-matory process in inflammatory bowel disease(IBD)patients,focusing on DNA methylation,histone modifications,and the influence of *** this editorial,we explore the interaction between genetics,gut microbiota,and diet,in an only ***,we provided dietary recommendations for patients with *** Western diet,characterized by a low fiber content and deficiency the micronutrients,impacts short-chain fatty acids production and may be related to the pathogenesis of *** the other hand,the consumption of the Mediter-ranean diet and dietary fibers are associated with reduced risk of IBD flares,particularly in Crohn’s disease(CD)*** to the dietary guidance from the International Organization for the Study of Inflammatory Bowel Diseases(IOIBD),the regular consumption of fruits and vegetables while reducing the consumption of saturated,trans,dairy fat,additives,processed foods rich in maltodextrins,and artificial sweeteners containing sucralose or saccharine is recommended to CD *** patients with ulcerative colitis,the IOIBD recommends the increased intake of natural sources of omega-3 fatty acids and follows the same restrictive recommendations aimed at CD patients,with the possible inclusion of red *** conclusion,IBD is a complex and hetero-geneous disease,and future studies are needed to elucidate the influence of epigenetics on diet and microbiota in IBD patients.

Managing inflammatory bowel disease(IBD)is becoming increasingly complex and personalized,considering the advent of new advanced therapies with distinct mechanisms of *** mucosal healing(MH)is a pivotal therapeutic goal in IBD management and can prevent IBD progression and reduce flares,hospitalization,surgery,intestinal damage,and colorectal *** proactive disease and therapy assessment is essential to achieve better control of intestinal inflammation,even if subclinical,to alter the natural course of *** monitoring of fecal calprotectin(FC)levels and interval endoscopic evaluations are cornerstones for evaluating response/remission to advanced therapies targeting IBD,assessing MH,and detecting subclinical ***,we comment on the article by Ishida et al Moreover,this editorial aimed to review the role of FC and endoscopic scores in predicting MH in patients with ***,we intend to present some evidence on the role of these markers in future targets,such as histological and transmural *** prospective multicenter studies with a stricter MH criterion,standardized endoscopic and histopathological analyses,and virtual chromoscopy,potentially including artificial intelligence and other biomarkers,are desired.

BACKGROUND Inflammatory bowel disease(IBD)comprises two distinct diseases,Crohn’s disease(CD)and ulcerative colitis(UC),both of which are chronic,relapsing inflammatory disorders of the gastrointestinal tract with a mostly unknown *** incidence and prevalence of IBD are continually increasing,indicating the need for further studies to investigate the genetic determinants of these *** microRNAs(miRNAs)regulate protein translation via complementary binding to mRNA,discovering differentially expressed miRNAs(DE)in UC or CD patients could be important for diagnostic biomarker identification,assisting in the appropriate disease differentiation progressing the understanding of IBD *** To determine the miRNA expression profile in UC and CD patients and the potential pathophysiological contributions of differentially expressed *** A total of 20 formalin-fixed paraffin-embedded colonic samples were collected from the Pathology Department of Botucatu Medical School at São Paulo State University(Unesp).The diagnosis of UC or CD was based on clinical,endoscopic,radiologic,and histological criteria and confirmed by histopathological analysis at the time of *** TaqMan™Array Human MicroRNA A+B Cards Set v3.0(Applied Biosystems™)platform was used to analyze 754 *** of DE-miRNAs were predicted using miRNA Data Integration Portal(mirDIP)and the miRNA Target Interaction database(MiRTarBase).All statistical analyses were conducted using GraphPad Prism *** and nonparametric data were analyzed using t-tests and Mann-Whitney U tests,*** The results showed that of the 754 miRNAs that were initially evaluated,643 miRNAs were found to be expressed in at least five of the patients who were diagnosed with either CD or UC;the remaining 111 miRNAs were not considered to be expressed in these *** expression levels of 28 miRNAs were significantly different between the CD and UC patients(P≤0.05

MicroRNAs(miRNAs),small non-coding RNAs composed of 18–24 nucleotides,are potent regulators of gene expression,contributing to the regulation of more than 30%of protein-coding *** that miRNAs are regulators of inflammatory pathways and the differentiation of intestinal epithelial cells,there is an interest in exploring their importance in inflammatory bowel disease(IBD).IBD is a chronic and multifactorial disease of the gastrointestinal tract;the main forms are Crohn's disease and ulcerative *** studies have investigated the dysregulated expression of miRNAs in IBD,demonstrating their important roles as regulators and potential biomarkers of this *** editorial presents what is known and what is expected regarding miRNAs in *** the important regulatory roles of miRNAs in IBD are clearly established,biomarkers for IBD that can be applied in clinical practice are lacking,emphasizing the importance of further *** regarding the influence of miRNAs on the inflammatory process and the exploration of their role in gene regulation are expected to provide a basis for the use of miRNAs not only as potent biomarkers in IBD but also as therapeutic targets for the control of inflammatory processes in personalized medicine.

The gut microbiota is a complex community of microorganisms that inhabit the digestive tracts of humans,living in symbiosis with the ***,characterized by an imbalance between the beneficial and opportunistic gut microbiota,is associated with several gastrointestinal disorders,such as irritable bowel syndrome(IBS);inflammatory bowel disease(IBD),represented by ulcerative colitis and Crohn’s disease;and colorectal cancer(CRC).Dysbiosis can disrupt the mucosal barrier,resulting in perpetuation of inflammation and *** increase in some specific groups of harmful bacteria,such as Escherichia coli(***)and enterotoxigenic Bacteroides fragilis(ETBF),has been associated with chronic tissue inflammation and the release of pro-inflammatory and carcinogenic mediators,increasing the chance of developing CRC,following the inflammationdysplasia-cancer sequence in IBD ***,the aim of the present review was to analyze the correlation between changes in the gut microbiota and the development and maintenance of IBD,CRC,and IBD-associated *** with IBD and CRC have shown reduced bacterial diversity and abundance compared to healthy individuals,with enrichment of Firmicute sand *** bacteria are also associated with the onset and progression of CRC,such as Fusobacterium nucleatum,***,Enterococcus faecalis,Streptococcus gallolyticus,and *** research can evaluate the advantages of modulating the gut microbiota as preventive measures in CRC high-risk patients,directly affecting the prognosis of the disease and the quality of life of patients.

Magnesium and type 2 diabetes

Type 2 diabetes is frequently associated with both extracellular and intracellular magnesium(Mg) deficits. A chronic latent Mg deficit or an overt clinical hypomagnesemia is common in patients with type 2 diabetes, especially in those with poorly controlled glycemic profiles. Insulinand glucose are important regulators of Mg metabolism. Intracellular Mg plays a key role in regulating insulin action, insulin-mediated-glucose-uptake and vascular tone. Reduced intracellular Mg concentrations result in a defective tyrosine-kinase activity, postreceptorial impairment in insulin action and worsening of insulin resistance in diabetic patients. A low Mg intake and an increased Mg urinary loss appear the most important mechanisms that may favor Mg depletion in patients with type 2 diabetes. Low dietary Mg intake has been related to the development of type 2 diabetes and metabolic syndrome. Benefits of Mg supplementation on metabolic profiles in diabetic patients have been found in most, but not all clinical studies and larger prospective studies are needed to support the potential role of dietary Mg supplementation as a possible public health strategy in diabetes risk. The aim of this review is to revise current evidence on the mechanisms of Mg deficiency in diabetes and on the possible role of Mg supplementation in the prevention and management of the disease.

Type 2 diabetes mellitus and Alzheimer's disease

Epidemiological and biological evidences support a link between type 2 diabetes mellitus(DM2) and Alzheimer's disease(AD). Persons with diabetes have a higher incidence of cognitive decline and an increased risk of developing all types of dementia. Cognitive deficits in persons with diabetes mainly affect the areas of psychomotor efficiency, attention, learning and memory, mental flexibility and speed, and executive function. The strong epidemiological association has suggested the existence of a physiopathological link. The determinants of the accelerated cognitive decline in DM2, however, are less clear. Increased cortical and subcortical atrophy have been evidenced after controlling for diabetic vascular disease and inadequate cerebral circulation. Most recent studies have focused on the role of insulin and insulin resistance as possible links between diabetes and AD. Disturbances in brain insulin signaling mechanisms may contribute to the molecular, biochemical, and histopathological lesions in AD. Hyperglycemia itself is a risk factor for cognitive dysfunction and dementia. Hypoglycemia may also have deleterious effects on cognitive function. Recurrent symptomatic and asymptomatic hypoglycemic episodes have been suggested to cause sub-clinical brain damage, and permanent cognitive impairment. Futuretrials are required to clarify the mechanistic link, to address the question whether cognitive decline may be prevented by an adequate metabolic control, and to elucidate the role of drugs that may cause hypoglycemic episodes.
