Wettability of silicon carbide ceramic by Al_2O_3/Dy_2O_3 and Al_2O_3/Yb_2O_3 systems

Wettability is an important phenomenon in the liquid phase sintering of silicon carbide （Sic） ceramics. This work involved a study of the wetting of Sic ceramics by two oxide systems, Al2O3 /Dy2O3 and Al2O3 /Yb2O3, which have so far not been studied for application in the sintering of Sic ceramics. Five mixtures of each system were prepared, with different compositions close to their respective eutectic ones. Samples of the mixtures were pressed into cylindrical specimens, which were placed on a Sic plate and subjected to temperatures above their melting points using a graphite resistance furnace. The behavior of the melted mixtures on the Sic plate was observed by means of an imaging system using a ccD camera and the sessile drop method was employed to determine the contact angle, the parameter that measures the degree of wettability. The results of variation in the contact angle as a function of temperature were plotted in graphic form which showed that the curves displayed a fast decline and good spreading. All the samples of the two systems presented final contact angles of 40o to 10o indicating their good wetting on Sic in the argon atmosphere. The melted/solidified area and interface between Sic and melted/solidified phase were evaluated by scanning electron microscopy （SEM） and their crystalline phases were identified by X-ray diffraction （DRX）. The DRX analysis showed that Al2O3 and RE2O3 reacted and formed the Dy3Al5O12 （DyAg） and Yb3Al5O12 （YbAg） phases. The results indicated that the two systems had a promising potential as additives for the sintering of Sic ceramics.

The role of rhizobacteria in rice plants: Growth and mitigation of toxicity

Allelopathic compounds reduce the growth and productivity of upland rice plants, especially in consecutive plantations. The rhizobacteria Pseudomonas fluorescens BRM-32111 and Burkholderia pyrrocinia BRM-32113 have been recorded as growth promoters in rice. This study was developed to understand the effect of the application of rhizobacteria on upland rice plants in consecutive plantations. Experiments were conducted in a completely randomized design with four replications of four treatments: rice seed inoculated with P. fluorescens BRM-32111, rice seed inoculated with B. pyrrocinia BRM-32113(both sown on soil with rice residue), non-inoculated plants sown on soil with rice residue(control with residue(WR)), and non-inoculated plants on soil with no residue(NR). Roots and seedling growth were adversely affected by allelopathic compounds in control WR plants. Plants inoculated with rhizobacteria P. fluorescens BRM-32111 or B. pyrrocinia BRM-32113 induced an increase of 88% in biomass, 3% in the leaf area, 40% in length, 67% in root biomass, 21% in chlorophyll a, 53% in chlorophyll(a+b), 50% in rate of carbon assimilation(A), 227% in A/rubisco carboxylation efficiency(ci) and 63% in water use efficiency(WUE) compared to control WR plants. These results indicate that rhizobacteria P. fluorescens BRM-32111 and B. pyrrocinia BRM-32113 increase the tolerance of rice plants to stress from allelochemicals. There are possible practical agricultural applications of these results for mitigating the effects of environmental allelochemistry on upland rice.

Due to the current water scarcity in the world,it is extremely important to improve the use of this natural and exhaustible resource in agriculture,by contributing to increase agricultural production and *** models of crop growth simulation were developed to predict the edaphoclimatic effects on crop *** models are calibrated and validated for a given region using the data generated from field ***,the objective of this study was to calibrate and validate the FAO Aquacrop model for yacon(Smallanthus sonchifolius)crop in a tropical *** experiment was conducted in an experimental area located in the municipality of Ibatiba,state of Espírito Santo(Brazil)during the years of 2013 and *** calibration was done using the Autumn planting and validation with the Winter and Spring *** the statistical analysis,the coefficient of determination,Willmott concordance index,bias for the systematic error,root mean square error and the mean absolute error to test the model performance were *** general,the FAO Aquacrop model predicted the root yield,total biomass and harvest index with acceptable accuracy,and with deviations of less than 6%for total and root *** planting of yacon showed a reduction in yield as well as total biomass.

The applications of bionic methodology developed by the Laboratory of Design and Material Selection as basis in the creation of junction elements were demonstrated. These elements favor the application of Ecodesign in reference to the effectiveness of product dismount aiming the reduction of ambient impact in all its phases of use. The creation, the development and the confection of new junction elements were described, and case studies of new products developed specifically with this purpose were presented.

Effect of solvent mixtures on the ultrasound-assisted extraction of compounds from pineapple by-product

Extraction of compounds from pineapple by-products can be affected by operational conditions and *** study aimed to(i)carry out the ultrasound-assisted extraction of phenolic compounds from pineapple peels using different types of solvents and operating conditions and(ii)characterize the extracts *** solvents with the highest efficiency in extracting total phenolic compounds(TPc),namely water,ethanol,and acid solution(1 mol L−1 Hcl),were tested in different proportions using a simplex-centroid mixture *** effects of time(5–45 min),temperature(30–60°c),and ultrasonic power(0–100 W)were also *** were assessed for antioxidant potential,phenolic profile,and sugar *** contents ranged from 219.75 to 405.06 mg GAE 100 g−1,with the highest value obtained in the mixture of ethanol(0.50)and acid solution(0.50).The extract with the highest TPc content and antioxidant activity was obtained at 60°c,50 W of ultrasonic power and 30 *** extract obtained under these conditions contained fructose(7.17 g 100 g−1)and glucose(8.29 g 100 g−1)as major soluble sugars and caffeic acid(217.65 mg 100 g−1)as the major phenolic ***,the extraction of compounds under the conditions studied is an alternative to the valorization of pineapple waste.

Non-Intrusive Elastic Query Processing in the cloud

cloud computing is a very promising paradigm of service-oriented computing. One major benefit of cloud computing is its elasticity, i.e., the system＇s capacity to provide and remove resources automatically at runtime. For that, it is essential to design and implement an efficient and effective technique that takes full advantage of the system＇s potential flexibility. This paper presents a non-intrusive approach that monitors the performance of relational database management systems in a cloud infrastructure, and automatically makes decisions to maximize the efficiency of the provider＇s environment while still satisfying agreed upon ＂service level agreements＂（SLAs）. Our experiments conducted on Amazon＇s cloud infrastructure, confirm that our technique is capable of automatically and dynamically adjusting the system＇s allocated resources observing the SLA.
