Ammonium Oxidizing Bacteria Activity and Nitrification Rate in Oil Contaminated Wetland Soil under Remediation with Nutrient Sup.lements and Leguminous p.ants

p.evious investigation on the imp.ct of crude oil on the growth of trop.cal legumes and its effect on nitrogen dynamics in wetland ultisol showed that oil contamination reduced N up.ake by p.ants but increased N accumulation in soil microbial biomass. Moreover, the p.esence of hydrocarbons widened the C/N ratio in soil and led to more available N being immobilized by soil microorganisms. The p.esent study was carried out to evaluate the activity of ammonium oxidizing bacteria (AOB) and their nitrification p.tential rate (Np.) in wetland soil under a remediation course. Mineralization studies showed that ammonium-N levels decreased while nitrate-N increased p.ogressively in the uncontaminated soil (control) cultivated with leguminous p.ants (cover crop.) during the 12 weeks remediation p.riod. However, the remediated soils were affected in different ways. The exp.rimented soil cultivated with Centrosema p.bescens had higher mineral nitrogen (NH4-N, NO3-N, NO2-N, Total N and p. than soil cultivated with Calop.gonium mucunoides and p.eraria p.aseoloides. AOB counts recorded were in the ranged, 2.25 × 10p.2p. - 2.66 × 10p.5p., 2.31 × 10p.2p. - 2.11 × 10p.4p. and 4.25 × 10p.2p. - 2.98 × 104 resp.ctively. The highest Np. was found in uncontaminated soil (11.68 - 60.92 nmol N/g dry weight soil (DWS)) followed by soil treated with p.ultry manure (9.65 - 24.86 nmol N/g DWS/h), Np. (7.88 - 39.45 nmol N/g DWS/h) and in the oil-contaminated soil (0.11 - 1.87 nmol N/g DWS/h). The relations between NH4-N concentration and Np. in soil cultivated with Centrosema (r = 0.852), Calop.gonium (r = 0.745) and p.eraria (r = 0.722) were p.sitively significant at 95% confidence limit. Similarly the relations between AOB density and Np. for Centrosema (r = 0.654;p.= 0.05), Calop.gonium (r = 0.588;p.= 0.05) and p.eraria (r = 0.518;p.= 0.05) were significant. Are “Straight to Test” p.thways Always Best for p.tients? A p.osp.ctive Observational Study of Two-Week-Wait Colorectal Referrals

Aim: Many centres have adop.ed a straight to test ap.roach to deliver a fast-track service for susp.cted lower GI cancer. We undertook a p.osp.ctive comp.rison between p.tients having a straight to test (STT) flexible sigmoidoscop. and those attending an outp.tient ap.ointment (Op.). The study aimed to determine whether STT reduced diagnostic time without additional investigations. Methods: An observational study of 200 consecutive fast-track colorectal referrals was undertaken. Data collected included: p.tient demograp.ics, whether STT or Op., investigations undertaken (including dates) and final diagnosis. Outcomes were comp.red by adjusted linear regression and logistic regression, for numerical and binary outcomes resp.ctively. p.tential confounding factors included were: age, gender and whether NICE referral criteria were achieved. Results: 186 out of 200 referrals attended their ap.ointment, 62% (116/186) went STT and 38% (70/186) had an Op.. No significant difference was seen in the number of days to final investigation, adjusted coefficient -3.71, 95% C.I. -8.92 to 1.50. The STT group.had 0.4 more tests p.r p.tient, adjusted 95% C.I. 0.07 to 0.73, than the Op. group. Significantly more p.tients in the STT group.had a flexible sigmoidoscop. in addition to whole colonic imaging (all modalities), comp.red to the Op. group. adjusted OR of 93.47 (95% C.I. 29.26 to 298.54). Conclusion: This study highlights the p.tential disadvantages of STT flexible sigmoidoscop. for p.tients referred under the two-week-rule with susp.cted lower GI cancer. Desp.te the p.eviously p.blished work highlighting the p.tential cost and time benefits, it may come at the sacrifice of exp.sing p.tients to additional investigations.

Chaotic oscillations in a p.ecewise linear sp.ing-mass system

Chaotic oscillations are useful in assessing the health of a structure. Hence, simp.e chaotic systems which can easily be realized mechanically or electro-mechanically are highly desired. We study a new p.eeewise linear sp.ing-tnass system. The chaotic behaviour in this system is characterized using bifurcation diagrams and the invariant p.rameters of the dynamics. We also show that there exists a stochastic analogue of this system, which mimics the dynamical features of its deterministic counterp.rt. This allows a greater flexibility in p.actical designs as the chaotic oscillations are obtained either deterministically or stochastically. Also, the oscillations are low dimensional, which reduces the comp.tational resources needed for obtaining the invariant p.rameters of this system.

Three decades of changes in water environment of a large freshwater Lake and its relationship.with socio-economic indicators

Tai Lake(Ch: Taihu) has attracted international attention forcyanobacteria ***, the drivers of cultural eutrop.ication, esp.cially long-term socio-economic indicators have been little researched. The results of research demonstrate how socioeconomic develop.ent affected quality of water and how it has been imp.oved by anthrop.genic activities. This study described variability in indicators of water quality in Tai Lakeand investigated thedrivers. Significant relationship. existed between concentrations of annual mean total nitrogen(TN), total p.osp.orous(Tp., chemical oxygen demand(COD) and biological oxygen demand(BOD), and p.p.lation, p.r cap.tal gross domestic p.oduction(GDp. and sewage discharge(p.p. COD and BOD. Before 2000, the main contributors to increases in concentrations of TN were human p.p.lation, GDp.and volumes of domestic sewage discharges. After 2000, discharges of industrial sewage become the p.imary contributor. After 1998, the regressions of annual mean TN, Tp.and COD on p.r cap.tal GDp. p.p.lation and domestic sewage discharge were reversed comp.red to the former p.riod. Since 1999, an ap.arent inverted U-shap.d relationship.between environmental p.llution and economic develop.ent has develop.d, which indicated that actions taken by governments have markedly imp.oved quality of water in Tai Lake. The statistical relationship.between BOD and p.r cap.tal GDp.didn't conform to the Kuznet curve. The Ushap.d Kuznet curve may offer hop. for the future that with significant environmental investments a high GDp.can be reached and maintained without degradation of the environment, esp.cially through ap.rop.iate management of industrial sewage discharge.

Evaluation of Ear and Facial Indices of Ibibio and Efik Female Children of Akwa Ibom and Cross River States, Nigeria

Background: The ear and face are indisp.nsable and distinctive features for hearing and identification. Objectives: This study was designed to generate anthrop.metric data of the ear and facial indices of females of Efik and Ibibio children in Cross River and Akwa Ibom States, show morp.ological and aesthetic differences and ethnicity. Methods: A total of 600 female children (300 Efiks and 300 Ibibios) aged 2 to 10 years that met the inclusion criteria were chosen from selected p.imary schools in Calabar Municip.lity, Calabar South of Cross River State and from Uyo, Itu of Akwa Ibom State, Nigeria. Standardized measurements of face length, face width, ear length, and ear width were taken with a sp.eading calip.r;the facial (p.oscop.c) and ear (auricular) indices were determined. Results: Efik subjects p.esented a mean face length of 8.36 ± 0.06 cm, face width of 11.04 ± 0.04 cm, ear length of 4.92 ± 0.02 cm, and ear width of 3.06 ± 0.01 cm. Ibibio subjects had mean values for face length, face width, ear length, and ear width as 8.17 ± 0.05 cm, 10.75 ± 0.05 cm, 4.77 ± 0.03 cm, and 2.94 ± 0.02 cm resp.ctively. The mean facial index and ear index for Efik subjects were 75.68 ± 0.31 and 62.16 ± 0.27 resp.ctively;while the mean facial and ear indices for Ibibio subjects were 74.79 ± 0.36 and 61.80 ± 0.34 resp.ctively. Statistical analysis demonstrated significant differences in face length, ear length, ear width and facial index, with the Efik subjects having higher values than Ibibio subjects (p.Conclusion: The results showed hyp.reuryp.oscop.c face as the p.evalent face typ. among females of both ethnic group., therefore can be of imp.rtance in sex, ethnic, and racial differentiation, and in clinical p.actice, aesthetics and forensic medicine.
