The ammonia loss through NalophanTM bags has been studied. Ammonia was chosen as target compound in order to be representative of odorous molecules of small dimensions. The losses observed for storage conditions and times as allowed by the reference standard for dynamic olfactometry (EN 13725:2003) indicate that odour concentration values due to the presence of small molecules may be significantly underestimated if samples are not analysed immediately after sampling. The diffusion coefficient of ammonia through the NalophanTM film was evaluated using the Fick’s law, and it turned out to be equal to 2.38E-12 (m2/s). The results and their theoretical interpretation indicate that concentration losses due to ammonia diffusion through the NalophanTM film can be decreased by using large bags and filling them up to their maximum capacity.

Reconstructing pre-erosion topography using spatial interpolation techniques： A validation-based approach

Understanding the topographic context preceding the development of erosive landforms is of major relevance in geomorphic research, as topography is an important factor on both water and mass movement-related erosion, and knowledge of the original surface is a condition for quantifying the volume of eroded material. Although any reconstruction implies assuming that the resulting surface reflects the original topography, past works have been dominated by linear interpolation methods, incapable of generating curved surfaces in areas with no data or values out- side the range of variation of inputs. In spite of these limitations, impossibility of validation has led to the assumption of surface representativity never being challenged. In this paper, a validation-based method is applied in order to define the optimal interpolation technique for reconstructing pre-erosion topography in a given study area. In spite of the absence of the original surface, different techniques can be nonetheless evaluated by quantifying their ca- pacity to reproduce known topography in unincised locations within the same geomorphic contexts of existing erosive landforms. A linear method （Triangulated Irregular Network, TIN） and 23 parameterizations of three distinct Spline interpolation techniques were compared using 50 test areas in a context of research on large gully dynamics in the South of Portugal. Results show that almost all Spline methods produced smaller errors than the TIN, and that the latter produced a mean absolute error 61.4% higher than the best Spline method, clearly establishing both the better adjustment of Splines to the geomorphic context considered and the limitations of linear approaches. The proposed method can easily be applied to different interpolation techniques and topographic contexts, enabling better calculations of eroded volumes and denudation rates as well as the investigation of controls by antecedent topographic form over erosive processes.

Molecular characterization of polar heteroatom species in oilsands bitumen-derived vacuum residue fractions by Fourier transform ion cyclotron resonance mass spectrometry

A Canadian in situ oilsands bitumen-derived vacuum residue(VR)was subjected to supercritical fluid extraction and fractionation(SFEF)into 13 extractable fractions and an unextractable end-cut and characterized by positive-and negative-ion electrospray ionization(ESI)Fourier transform ion cyclotron resonance mass spectrometry(FT-ICR MS).The results of negative-ion ESI FT-ICR MS showed that the N1 class species was the most abundant and the multifunctional group compounds,such as N1 O1,N1 O2,N1 S1,N1 S2,and N2 class species became abundant as the SFEF fraction became *** positive-ion ESI mode,the relative abundance of N1 class species decreased gradually in the heavy SFEF fractions while that of multifunctional group compounds *** relative abundance of N4 V1 O1 increased dramatically in heavy fractions and the *** distributions of polar heteroatom species of VR derived from oilsands bitumen were similar with those of VR derived from the Venezuela Orinoco extra heavy oil.

The concept for space interferometry from Polar or Equatorial Circular Medium Earth Orbits(the PECMEO concept) is a promising way to acquire the image of the"shadow"of the event horizon of Sagittarius A*with an angular resolution of circa 5 microarcseconds. The concept is intended to decrease the size of the main reflector of the instrument to about 3 m using a precise orbit reconstruction based on Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) navigation, inter-satellite range and range-rate measurements, and data from the Attitude and Orbit Determination System (AODS). The paper provides the current progress on the definition of the subsystems required for the concept on the basis of simulations, radio regulations, and available technology. The paper proposes the requirement for the localization of the phase centre of the main reflector. The paper provides information about the visibility of GNSS satellites and the needed accuracies of the AODS. The paper proposes the frequency plan for the instrument and its Inter-Satellite Links (ISLs).The concepts for measurement of range and range-rate using ISLs (as well as for the data exchange at these ISLs) are presented. The block diagram of the interferometer is described and its sensitivity is estimated. The link budget for both ISLs is given as well as their critical components. The calculated measurement quality factors are given. The paper shows the expected performance of the sub-systems of the interferometer. The requirements for the localization of the main reflectors and the information about the availability of the GNSS satellites are based on the simulations results. The frequency plan is obtained according to the PECMEO concept and taking into account the radio regulations. The existing technology defines the accuracies of the AODS, both the link budgets and the fundamental measurement accuracies for ISLs, and the sensitivity of the instrument. Type 2 diabetes mellitus(T2DM) is a complex disease in which both genetic and environmental factors interact in determining impaired β-cell insulin secretion and peripheral insulin resistance. Insulin resistance in muscle, liver and fat is a prominent feature of most patients with T2DM and obesity, resulting in a reduced response of these tissues to insulin. Considerable evidence has been accumulated to indicate that heredity is a major determinant of insulin resistance and T2DM. It is believed that, among individuals destined to develop T2DM, hyperinsulinemia is the mechanism by which the pancreatic β-cell initially compensates for deteriorating peripheral insulin sensitivity, thus ensuring normal glucose tolerance. Most of these people will develop T2DM when β-cells fail to compensate. Despite the progress achieved in this field in recent years, the genetic causes of insulin resistance and T2DM remain *** gene association, linkage and genome-wide association studies have highlighted the role of genetic factors in the development of T2DM. Using these strategies, a large number of variants have been identified in many of these genes, most of which may influence both hepatic and peripheral insulin resistance, adipogenesis and β-cell mass and function. Recently, a new gene has been identified by our research group, the HMGA1 gene, whose loss of function can greatly raise the risk of developing T2DM in humans and mice. Functional genetic variants of the HMGA1 gene have been associated with insulin resistance syndromes among white Europeans, Chinese individuals and Americans of Hispanic ancestry. These findings may represent new ways to improve or even prevent T2DM.

Pharmacogenetics of type 2 diabetes mellitus: An example of success in clinical and translational medicine

The pharmacological interventions currently available to control type 2 diabetes mellitus(T2DM) show a wide interindividual variability in drug response, emphasizing the importance of a personalized, more effective medical treatment for each individual patient. In this context, a growing interest has emerged in recent years and has focused on pharmacogenetics, a discipline aimed at understanding the variability in patients' drug response, making it possible to predict which drug is best for each patient and at what doses. Recent pharmacological and clinical evidences indicate that genetic polymorphisms(or genetic variations) of certain genes can adversely affect drug response and therapeutic efficacy of oral hypoglycemic agents in patients with T2 DM, through pharmacokinetic- and/or pharmacodynamic-based mechanisms that may reduce the therapeutic effects or increase toxicity. For example, genetic variants in genes encoding enzymes of the cytochrome P-450 superfamily, or proteins of the ATP-sensitive potassium channel on the beta-cell of the pancreas, are responsible for the interindividual variability of drug response to sulfonylureas in patients with T2 DM. Instead, genetic variants in the genes that encode for the organic cation transporters of metformin have been related to changes in both pharmacodynamic and pharmacokinetic responses to metformin in metformin-treated patients. Thus, based on the individual's genotype, the possibility, in these subjects, of a personalized therapy constitutes the main goal of pharmacogenetics, directly leading to the development of the right medicine for the right patient. Undoubtedly, this represents an integral part of the translational medicine network.

This article presents a study of the cloud forest dominated by the Prestoea montana (R. Graham) Nichols. This is a hyperhumid forest located in ravines and shaded areas with cloud condensation, and at heights ranging from 350 - 1250 masl. This type of forest is always found in thermal and mesotropical belts, without ever reaching the supratropical belt. This study was based on works published by other authors and on our own field sampling. The article begins by describing the geological, bioclimatic, biogeographic and floristic aspects of the areas in the study, specifically the hyperhumid areas in the central and eastern mountains. Due to the scarcity of phytosociological works on this area, we apply a statistical treatment to compare our communities with other associations described in Cuba. This comparison reveals that these forest groups are floristically quite distant from each other, both with regard to alliance and association species. We therefore propose two new communities: Cyathea furfuracea Baker and Prestoea montana (Grah.) Nichol;Ormosia krugii Urb. and Prestoea montana (Grah.) Nichol.
