Modeling unmanned aerial vehicle system for identifying foci of arboviral disease with monitoring system

People who live in low-income and hard-to-reach regions are usually the most affected ones by high incidences of arboviral diseases,increasing morbidity and mortality rates,and public health *** present the modeling of hardware and software components of an unmanned aerial vehicle(UAV)system by mathematical tools,focusing on monitoring foci of arboviral diseases transmitted by Aedes aegypti mosquito,e.g.,Zika,Chikungunya,and *** used restriction equations and the colored Petri nets formal modeling language to represent the flight dynamics and the software components of the system,*** evaluated the specification of desired behaviors of the monitoring system using simulations and the model checking *** results showed the completeness and correctness of the *** design of such a system is challenging due to the potential risks to people and the ***,this study provides insights into the development of an UAV system for such an application *** monitoring system has the potential of improving the efficiency in identifying foci of arboviral diseases.

Legume nodulation by rhizobia can supply crops with nitrogen and reduce environmental impacts caused by chemical fertilization. The soybean crop in Brazil is an impressive example of how biological N2 fixation can be employed with a plant species of high economic value. However, the development of more productive cultivars, along with the increasing global climatic changes demand agricultural practices to become more productive and yet more environmentally friendly. Plant growth-promoting rhizobacteria (PGPR) are highly beneficial to agriculture worldwide, acting in plant nutrition, protection, and growth stimulation. Azospirillum is, certainly, the most employed PGPR in the world, but little is known about its interaction with rhizobia, when both are applied to legume seeds. We have evaluated the co-inoculation of bradyrhizobia and azospirilla on soybean seeds under different soil and climate conditions in Brazil. Our results demonstrated that co-inoculation is efficient and beneficial to the crop, and promotes yield increases without adding any chemical N fertilizers even in soils where established populations of soybean bradyrhizobia exist. The strategy of co-inoculation thus represents a new biotechnological tool to improve soybean yield without adding any chemical N fertilizers, thus contributing to current practices of sustainability in agriculture.

Influence of age in estimating maximal oxygen uptake

Objective To assess the influence of age on the error of estimate （EE） of maximal oxygen uptake （VO2max） using sex and population specific-equations in cycle ergometer exercise testing, since estimated VO2 max is associated with a substantial EE, often exceeding 20%, possibly due to intrinsic variability of mechanical efficiency. Methods 1850 adults （68% men）, aged 18 to 91 years, underwent maximal cycle ergometer cardiopulmonary exercise testing. Cardiorespiratory fitness （CRF） was assessed relative to sex and age [younger （18 to 35 years）, middle-aged （36 to 60 years） and older （〉 60 years）]. VO2max [mL.（***）-1] was directly measured by assessment of gas exchange and estimated using sex and population specific-equations. Measured and estimated values of VO2max and related EE were compared among the three age- and sex-specific groups. Results Directly measured VO2max of men and women were 29.5 ± 10.5 mL.（***）-1 and 24.2 ± 9.0 mL.（kg·min） -1 （P 〈 0.01）. EE [mL·（kg·min）-1] and percent errors （%E） for men and women had similar values, 0.5 ± 3.2 and 0.4 ± 2.9 mL·（kg·min）-1, and -0.8 ± 13.1% and -1.7 ± 15.4% （P 〉 0.05）, respectively. EE and %E for each age-group were, respectively, for men： younger = 1.9 ± 4.1 mL·（kg·min）-1 and 3.8 ± 10.5%, middle-aged = 0.6 ± 3.1 mL.（kg·min）-1 and 0.4 ± 10.3%, older = -0.2 ± 2.7 mL·（kg·min） -1 and -4.2 ± 16.6% （P 〈 0.01）; and for women： younger = 1.2 ± 3.1 mL.（***）-1 and 2.7 ±10.0%, middle-aged = 0.7 ± 2.8 mL·（kg·min）-1 and 0.5 ± 11.1%, older = -0.8 ± 2.3 mL-（kg·min）-1 and -9.5 ± 22.4% （P 〈 0.01）. Conclusion VO2max were underestimated in younger age-groups and were overestimated in older age groups. Age significantly influences the magnitude of the EE of VO2max in both men and women and should be considered when CRF is estimated using population specific equations, rather than directly measured.

Neutrophils are the most numerous leukocyte in mammals and normally they are the first phagocyte observed in recently damaged or infected tissues. They play a key role in the innate immune responses to Leishmania and several other microorganisms, nonetheless an exacerbated neutrophils activity can generate a harmful response to the host, therefore its turnover rate is very important to maintain the homeostasis and averts the host tissue damage. Both apoptosis followed by phagocytosis by mononuclear phagocytes (eferocytosis) and reverse transmigration have been considered the main processes for the clearance of neutrophils from injured or infected tissues. However, the interaction with Leishmania and other microbes, as well as molecules produced by arthropod vectors such as sandflies saliva can modify the behavior of neutrophils, causing immediate lysis to prolong their life. In fact, as a result of a long course of coevolution, several microorganisms have developed skills to avoid neutrophil effector mechanisms and take advantage of neutrophil clearance pathways to promote their spread in the host’s body. With regard to wildlife translocations and the assessment of potential risk of disease transmission, several advances have been made in conservative projects. However, other factors like the large number of species received at screening centers from different locations, rescued after being hit by vehicles, taken by the public or confiscated from illegal trade by the authorities, have increased the risk of spreading, emergence or reemergence of zoonosis. Besides the notorious importance of the procedure improvement for managing wildlife, the access to as much as possible information about the occurrence of potential infections on each particular species can be a tool of great value for mitigating the disease risk. In the present paper, it was showed the evolution of processes for wildlife translocations mostly related to mammals, we also discussed some aspects related to sylvatic animals as reservoir host of zoonosis and finally were presented several tables recording numerous mammals hosts and their respective parasitic protozoa.

Humoral Immune Response of Immunized Sows with Recombinant Proteins of Enterotoxigenic Escherichia coli

Enteric disorders in pigs are related to the fimbriae F4 (K88), F5 (K99), F6 (987P), F41 and F18 of enterotoxigenic Escherichia coli (ETEC). Immunization of sows with adhesins is important to stimulate the production of antibodies and the consequent transfer of these to the piglets via colostrum to prevent diarrhea during the neonate period and after weaning. The objective of this study was to evaluate the immune response of the sows immunized with recombinant ETEC proteins (F4, F5, F6, F18 and F41). The immune response of the sows immunized with the recombinant proteins was compared with a commercial vaccine containing ETEC bacterins. The study was performed on a commercial farm and included nine pregnant sows divided into three groups: G1 was vaccinated with recombinant proteins (n = 3);G2 was vaccinated with the commercial vaccine (n = 3);and G3 was vaccinated with sterile buffered saline (PBS) (n = 3). All the sows were fed a balanced diet without antibiotics and water ad libitum. The recombinant fimbriae stimulated the specific humoral immune response of the immunized sows. There was a statistically significant increase in the levels of antibodies to the fimbriae F4 (K88), F5 (K99), F6 (987P) and F18 in the sows vaccinated with the recombinant proteins compared with the control group. The colostrum IgG titers for all fimbriae in all the immunized sows were significantly increased compared to the control group. Additionally, all the piglets exhibited significantly increased antibody levels relative to all fimbriae when compared with those in the unimmunized control group, demonstrating successful antibody transfer via colostrum of the sows to the piglets.

Distribution of Nutrients and Changes in Phytoplankton Composition in a Tropical Mesotidal Estuary, Northeastern Brazil

Abiotic parameters and phytoplankton were collected during 2010 and 2011 with the purpose of describing the phytoplankton distribution and the environmental characteristics. The diatoms were the most representative group in terms of species richness;in terms of density, the Cyanobacteria were more representative. Diversity and equitability were generally low in the estuary due to the dominance of Microcystis aeruginosa, an opportunistic and potentially toxic species of Cyanobacteria. The estuarine region is strongly impacted by high pollutant loads, especially nitrogen and phosphate compounds. Historical series of Apparent Oxygen Utilization (AOU) showed negative trends associated with changes in the estuarine system. The main biological components changed through 1999-2011 period. The dominance of the species changed from the Bacillariophyta in previous studies to the Cyanobacteria in our study. The species Microcystis aeruginosa, through its high density, dominance and frequency of occurrence, was the key species in the area.
