Vibro-acoustic characteristics of multifunctional carbon fiber reinforced panel

This paper deals with the assessment of vibro-acoustic properties of a multifunctional carbon fiber reinfo rced panel manu factured by bulk infu sion,a modified resin film infusion process.The components of the epoxy resin were chosen to contrast the electrical insulating property and poor flame resistance of the epoxy resins impregnating carbon woven fabric.To confer electrical conductivity to the resin a percentage of 0.5 wt%of Multi-Wall Carbon Nanotubes(MWCNTs)was dispersed in the resin,whereas to increase flame resistance a percentage of 5 wt%of Glycidil Polyhedral Oligomeric Silsesquioxanes(GPOSS)was solubilized in the epoxy mixture.Furthermore,as hardener agents,a mixture of 4,4’-DiaminoDiphenyl Sulfone(DDS)(53.4 wt%)and Bis(3-Aminophenyl)Methyl Phosphine Oxide(BAMPO)(46.7 wt%)was used.The values of the electrical conductivity were found satisfactory enough,being4.02×10^(-2)S/m for the multifunctional resin and 1.39×10^(4)S/m for the in-plane conductivity of the panel,whereas the Limiting Oxygen Index(LOI)value of the multifunctional resin was found to increase from 27%to 36%.Considering these promising results,an experimental assessment of the vibro-acoustic properties of the manufactured multifunctional panel was also performed.The panel was tested mainly to evaluate its low-frequency vibration damping and sound insulation characteristics.The manufactured panel demonstrated an improved efficiency if compared to a baseline configuration,presenting almost the double modal damping and a gain of 10 dB on the global noise reduction.

Human Mobility in the Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction

This article looks at how population movements are addressed by the Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction 2015–2030(SFDRR), and highlights some of the potential implications of the SFDRR on disaster risk reduction(DRR) and mobility management work. The article looks at the operational implications of the SFDRR text and covers issues of including migrants in DRR work;informing urban development about current and future mobility trends; managing relocations, evacuations, and displacement to prevent future risks and reduce existing ones; and preparing for and managing disaster-induced population movements to reduce the direct and indirect impacts of natural hazards. Overall, the references to human mobility within the SFDRR show an evolution in the way the issue is considered within global policy dialogues. Both the potential of population movements to produce risk and their role in strengthening the resilience of people and communities are now clearly recognized. This is an evolution of previously prevailing views of mobility as the consequence of disasters or as a driver of risk. While some implications of the DRR-mobility nexus might still be missing from DRR policy, population movements are now recognized as a key global risk dynamic.

Data narratives are an emerging form of communication that employs enhanced media for effective knowledge transfer of complex information.Researchers in the fields of data visualization and artificial intelligence have begun to pioneer new structures of communication to improve the efficiency of construction and the retention of information provided by the knowledge transfer experience.In this paper,we report the results of an empirical study conducted to compare the performance of various narrative communication techniques including frame based narrative visualization,documentary narrative visualization,computer generated text narratives and human generated text narratives.We assess the knowledge transfer performance for each of these data driven narrative structures.Across all conditions,an identical set of knowledge retention questions assessed participants’recall of details from their assigned narrative communication.Statistical analysis on group performance answering the knowledge retention questions revealed that some narrative communication techniques perform better with general audiences.

Tomato genomic prediction for good performance under high-temperature and identification of loci involved in thermotolerance response

Many studies showed that few degrees above tomato optimum growth temperature threshold can lead to serious loss in production.Therefore,the development of innovative strategies to obtain tomato cultivars with improved yield under high temperature conditions is a main goal both for basic genetic studies and breeding activities.In this paper,a F4 segregating population was phenotypically evaluated for quantitative and qualitative traits under heat stress conditions.Moreover,a genotyping by sequencing(GBS)approach has been employed for building up genomic selection(GS)models both for yield and soluble solid content(SCC).Several parameters,including training population size,composition and marker quality were tested to predict genotype performance under heat stress conditions.A good prediction accuracy for the two analyzed traits(0.729 for yield production and 0.715 for SCC)was obtained.The predicted models improved the genetic gain of selection in the next breeding cycles,suggesting that GS approach is a promising strategy to accelerate breeding for heat tolerance in tomato.Finally,the annotation of SNPs located in gene body regions combined with QTL analysis allowed the identification of five candidates putatively involved in high temperatures response,and the building up of a GS model based on calibrated panel of SNP markers.

Assessment of the Spatial Uncertainty of Nitrates in the Aquifers of the Campania Plain (Italy)

We present a non-parametric hydro-geostatistical approach for mapping design nitrate hazard in groundwater. The approach is robust towards the uncertainty of the parametric models used to map groundwater pollution. In particular, probability kriging (PK) estimates the probability that the true value of a pollutant exceeds a set of threshold values using a binary response variable (probability indicator). Such soft description of the pollutant can mitigate the uncertainty in pollutant concentration mapping. PK was used for assessing nitrate migration hazard across the Campania Plain groundwater (Southern Italy) as exceeding typical critical values set to 25 and 50 mg.L-1. Cross-validation indicated that the PK is more suitable than ordinary kriging (OK), which yields large uncertainty in absolute values prediction of nitrate concentration. This means that spatial variability is critical for contaminant transport because critical contaminants concentration could be exceeded due to preferential flows allowing the pollutant to migrate rapidly through the caveats aquifer. Accordingly with PK application, about 250 km2 (40% of the total600 km2 of the Campania Plain) were classified as very sensitive areas (western zone) to maximum permissible concentration of nitrates (>50 mg.L-1). When the probability to exceed 25 mg.L-1 was considered, the contaminated surface increased to 70% of the total area.

Transmural migrated retained sponges usually impact at the level of the ileo-cecal valve leading to a small bowel obstruction.Once passed through the ileo-cecal valve,a retained sponge can be propelled forward by peristaltic activity and eliminated with feces.We report the case of a 52-year-old female with a past surgical history and recurrent episodes of abdominal pain and constipation.On physical examination,a generalized resistance was observed with tenderness in the right flank.Contrast-enhanced multi-detector computed tomography findings were consistent with a perforated right colonic diverticulitis with several out-pouchings at the level of the ascending colon and evidence of free air in the right parieto-colic gutter along with an air-fluid collection within the mesentery.In addition,a ring-shaped hyperdense intraluminal material was also noted.At surgery,the ascending colon appeared irregularly thickened and folded with a focal wall interruption and a peri-visceral abscess at the level of the hepatic flexure,but no diverticula were found.A right hemi-colectomy was performed and on dissection of the surgical specimen a retained laparotomy sponge was found in the bowel lumen.

Aim To evaluate the molecular mechanism through which oncogenic BRAF disrupts mitotic controls and plays a vital role in tumorigenesis.Methods We firstly introduced oncogenic mutant B-RAF into human SK-MEL31 cells.To assess mitotic spindles and centrosome numbers, SK-MEL31 cells expressing BRAF were subjected to immunostaining with a-and ?-tublin antibodies.For experiments to selectively knock down Mps1, pSUPER.retro or pSUPER.retro-siMpsl was transfected into the replication defective packaging cell line LA for retrovirus production.The BRAF signaling-dependent phosphorylation sites on human Mpsl were identified by LC-MS/MS analysis.Site-directed mutation constructs of Mps1 were generated using site-directed mutagenesis kit.The expressions of p-MAPK and p-S281 Mpsl were validated by immunohistochemistry(IHC) of patient tissue microarrays. Results We find Mpsl is critical for contributing to centrosome amplification and chromosome instability induced by BRAF.Phosphorylation of Mps1 at residue S281 by BRAF stabilizes Mps1 protein preventing its ubiquitination and degradation by APC/C,allowing the non-degraded protein accumulates at centrosomes.Cells in which endogenous Mps1 was replaced with a phospho-mimetic Mps1 mutant are viable but amplify centrosomes and missegregate chromosomes frequently.Importantly,analysis of TMAs revealed phospho-MAPK and S281-phosphorylated Mps1 were highly correlated in human melanoma tissues, implying that MAPK contributes to defects in the degradation of Mps1 in situ. Conclusion We propose that continuously activated BRAF signaling may be a possible mechanism for the deregulation of Mps1 stability and kinase activity in human tumors,and that persistent phosphorylation of Mps1 through BRAF signaling is a key event in disrupting the control of centrosome duplication and chromosome stability that may contribute to tumorigenesis.Our findings raise the possibility that targeting the oncogenic BRAF and S281-phosphorylated Mps1, especially when used in combination could potentially provide

Current guidelines on thrombolysis post stroke with recombinant tissue plasminogen activator (rt-PA) exclude its use where time of onset is unknown, thus denying some patients potentially beneficial treatment. Contrast enhanced perfusion computed tomography (pCT) imaging can be used together with plain CT and information on clinical deficits to decide whether or not thrombolysis should be initiated even though the exact time of stroke onset is unknown. Based on the results of pCT and CT, rt-PA was administered to two patients with unknown time of stroke onset; one of the patients also underwent suction thrombectomy. Results in both cases were excellent.
