A visual modeling method for spatiotemporal and multidimensional features in epidemiological analysis:Applied COVID-19 aggregated datasets

The visual modeling method enables flexible interactions with rich graphical depictions of data and supports the exploration of the complexities of epidemiological analysis.However,most epidemiology visualizations do not support the combined analysis of objective factors that might influence the transmission situation,resulting in a lack of quantitative and qualitative evidence.To address this issue,we developed a portrait-based visual modeling method called+msRNAer.This method considers the spatiotemporal features of virus transmission patterns and multidimensional features of objective risk factors in communities,enabling portrait-based exploration and comparison in epidemiological analysis.We applied+msRNAer to aggregate COVID-19-related datasets in New South Wales,Australia,combining COVID-19 case number trends,geo-information,intervention events,and expert-supervised risk factors extracted from local government area-based censuses.We perfected the+msRNAer workflow with collaborative views and evaluated its feasibility,effectiveness,and usefulness through one user study and three subject-driven case studies.Positive feedback from experts indicates that+msRNAer provides a general understanding for analyzing comprehension that not only compares relationships between cases in time-varying and risk factors through portraits but also supports navigation in fundamental geographical,timeline,and other factor comparisons.By adopting interactions,experts discovered functional and practical implications for potential patterns of long-standing community factors regarding the vulnerability faced by the pandemic.Experts confirmed that+msRNAer is expected to deliver visual modeling benefits with spatiotemporal and multidimensional features in other epidemiological analysis scenarios.

Research on shell-side heat and mass transfer with multi-component in LNG spiral-wound heat exchanger under sloshing conditions

The spiral-wound heat exchanger(SWHE) is the primary low-temperature heat exchanger for large-scale LNG plants due to its high-pressure resistance, compact structure, and high heat exchange efficiency. This paper studied the shell-side heat and mass transfer characteristics of vapor-liquid two-phase mixed refrigerants in an SWHE by combining a multi-component model in FLUENT software with a customized multicomponent mass transfer model. Besides, the mathematical model under the sloshing condition was obtained through mathematical derivation, and the corresponding UDF code was loaded into FLUENT as the momentum source term. The results under the sloshing conditions were compared with the relevant parameters under the steady-state condition. The shell-side heat and mass transfer characteristics of the SWHE were investigated by adjusting the component ratio and other working conditions. It was found that the sloshing conditions enhance the heat transfer performance and sometimes have insignificant effects. The sloshing condition is beneficial to reduce the flow resistance. The comprehensive performance of multi-component refrigerants has been improved and the improvement is more significant under sloshing conditions, considering both the heat transfer and pressure drop.These results will provide theoretical support for the research and design of multi-component heat and mass transfer enhancement of LNG SWHE under ocean sloshing conditions.

Small-diameter acellular porcine corneal stroma for peripheral corneal ulceration treatment

AIM:To evaluate the clinical efficacy of small-diameter acellular porcine corneal stroma(SAPS)for the treatment of peripheral corneal ulceration(PCU).METHODS:This retrospective clinical study included 18 patients(18 eyes)with PCU between April 2018 and December 2020.All patients had PCU and underwent lamellar keratoplasty with SAPS.Observation indicators included preoperative and postoperative best-corrected visual acuity(BCVA)and transparency of SAPS.The infection control rate in the surgical eye-lesion area was also calculated.RESULTS:Eighteen patients underwent lamellar keratoplasty with SAPS to treat PCU.None of the patients experienced rejection after 6mo(18/18)and 12mo(16/16)of follow-up.The BCVA(0.47±0.30)at the 6mo followup after operation was significantly improved compared with the baseline(0.99±0.80),and the difference was statistically significant(Z=-3.415,Pdually became transparent.At the 6mo(18/18)and 12mo(16/16)follow-up,none of the patients had recurrent corneal infection.CONCLUSION:SAPS is clinically effective in the treatment of PCU,improving the patient’s BCVA and reducing the incidence of rejection after keratoplasty.

Yu et al.[1]reported that the tumor necrosis factor(TNF)receptor OX40(CD134)-TNF receptor-associated factor 6(TRAF6)axis mediates Lys63-linked ubiquitination and subsequent lysosomal degradation of cytotoxic T-lymphocyte antigen 4(CTLA-4),leading to the enhancement of CD8^(+)T-cell-mediated antitumor immunity.Their findings unveil a previously unknown mechanism in controlling the stability of the immune checkpoint CTLA-4 and provide a potential therapeutic target for the improvement of Tcell-based immunotherapy.

NiO-Doped Fe_(2)O_(3)/MgO Properties for the Chemical Looping Oxidative Dehydrogenation of Ethane

Ethane chemical looping oxidative dehydrogenation(CL-ODH)to ethylene is a new technology for ethylene preparation.Fe_(2)O_(3)/MgO oxygen carrier was prepared using the co-precipitation method.The influence of added NiO and its different loadings on Fe_(2)O_(3)/MgO were investigated.Then,a series of oxygen carriers were applied in the CL-ODH of the ethane cycle system.Brunauer-Emmett-Teller(BET),X-ray diffractometry(XRD),X-ray photoelection spectroscopy(XPS),and H2-temperature programmed reduction(TPR)were used to characterize the physicochemical properties of these oxygen carriers.It was confirmed that an interaction between NiO and Fe_(2)O_(3) occurred based on the XPS and H2-TPR results.Based on the CL-ODH activity performance tests conducted in a fixed-bed reactor,it was revealed that ethylene selectivity was significantly improved after NiO addition.Fe_(2)O_(3)-10%NiO/MgO showed the best activity performance with 93%ethane conversion and 50%ethylene selectivity at a reaction temperature of 650℃,atmospheric pressure,and space velocity of 7500 mL/(g·h).

BACKGROUND According to clinical data,a significant percentage of patients experience pain after surgery,highlighting the importance of alleviating postoperative pain.The current approach involves intravenous self-control analgesia,often utilizing opioid analgesics such as morphine,sufentanil,and fentanyl.Surgery for colo-rectal cancer typically involves general anesthesia.Therefore,optimizing anes-thetic management and postoperative analgesic programs can effectively reduce perioperative stress and enhance postoperative recovery.The study aims to analyze the impact of different anesthesia modalities with multimodal analgesia on patients'postoperative pain.AIM To explore the effects of different anesthesia methods coupled with multi-mode analgesia on postoperative pain in patients with colorectal cancer.METHODS Following the inclusion criteria and exclusion criteria,a total of 126 patients with colorectal cancer admitted to our hospital from January 2020 to December 2022 were included,of which 63 received general anesthesia coupled with multi-mode labor pain and were set as the control group,and 63 received general anesthesia associated with epidural anesthesia coupled with multi-mode labor pain and were set as the research group.After data collection,the effects of postoperative analgesia,sedation,and recovery were compared.RESULTS Compared to the control group,the research group had shorter recovery times for orientation,extubation,eye-opening,and spontaneous respiration(Pduced at various time points in the research group compared to the control group(Pdural anesthes

Roles of nanoparticles in arsenic mobility and microbial community composition in arsenic-enriched soils

Environmental effects of nano remediation engineering of arsenic(As)pollution need to be considered.In this study,the roles of Fe_(2)O_(3)and TiO_(2)nanoparticles(NPs)on the microbial mediated As mobilization from As contaminated soil were investigated.The addition of Fe_(2)O_(3)and TiO_(2)NPs restrained As(V)release,and stimulated As(Ⅲ)release.As(V)concentration decreased by 94% and 93% after Fe_(2)O_(3)addition,and decreased by 89% and 45% after Ti O_(2)addition compared to the Biotic and Biotic+Acetate(amended with sodium acetate)controls,respectively.The maximum values of As(Ⅲ)were 20.5 and 27.1μg/L at 48 d after Fe_(2)O_(3)and TiO_(2)NPs addition,respectively,and were higher than that in Biotic+Acetate control(12.9μg/L).The released As co-precipitated with Fe in soils in the presence of Fe_(2)O_(3)NPs,but adsorbed on TiO_(2)NPs in the presence of TiO_(2)NPs.Moreover,the addition of NPs amended with sodium acetate as the electron donor clearly promoted As(V)reduction induced by microbes.The NPs addition changed the relative abundance of soil bacterial community,while Proteobacteria(42.8%-70.4%),Planctomycetes(2.6%-14.3%),and Firmicutes(3.5%-25.4%)were the dominant microorganisms in soils.Several potential As/Fe reducing bacteria were related to Pseudomonas,Geobacter,Desulfuromonas,and Thiobacillus.The addition of Fe_(2)O_(3)and TiO_(2)NPs induced to the decrease of arr A gene.The results indicated that the addition of NPs had a negative impact on soil microbial population in a long term.The findings offer a relatively comprehensive assessment of Fe_(2)O_(3)and TiO_(2)NPs effects on As mobilization and soil bacterial communities.

Activation of the NOD-like receptor protein 3(NLRP3)inflammasome signaling pathway is an important mechanism underlying myocardial pyroptosis and plays an important role in inflammatory damage to myocardial tissue in patients with cardiovascular diseases(CVDs),such as diabetic cardiomyopathy,ischemia/reperfusion injury,myocardial infarction,heart failure and hypertension.Noncoding RNAs(nc RNAs)are important regulatory factors.Many Chinese medicine(CM)compounds,including their effective components,can regulate pyroptosis and exert myocardium-protecting effects.The mechanisms underlying this protection include inhibition of inflammasome protein expression,Toll-like receptor 4–NF-κB signal pathway activation,oxidative stress,endoplasmic reticulum stress(ERS),and mixed lineage kinase 3 expression and the regulation of silent information regulator 1.The NLRP3 protein is an important regulatory target for CVD prevention and treatment with CM.Exploring the effects of the interventions mediated by CM and the related mechanisms provides new ideas and perspectives for CVD prevention and treatment.

Crystal facet-dependent CO_(2)cycloaddition to epoxides over ZnO catalysts

With regard to green chemistry and sustainable development,the fixation of CO_(2)into epoxides to form cyclic carbonates is an attractive and promising pathway for CO_(2)utilization.Metal oxides,renowned as promising eco-friendly catalysts for industrial production,are often undervalued in terms of their impact on the CO_(2)addition reaction.In this work,we successfully developed ZnO nanoplates with(002)surfaces and ZnO nanorods with(100)surfaces via morphology-oriented regulation to explore the effect of crystal faces on CO_(2)cycloaddition.The quantitative data obtained from electron paramagnetic resonance spectroscopy indicated that the concentration of oxygen vacancies on the ZnO nanoplate surfaces was more than twice that on the ZnO nanorod surfaces.Density functional theory calculations suggested that the(002)surfaces have lower adsorption energies for CO_(2)and epichlorohydrin than the(100)surfaces.As a result,the yield of cyclochloropropene carbonate on the ZnO nanoplates(64.7%)was much greater than that on the ZnO nanorods(42.3%).Further evaluation of the reused catalysts revealed that the decrease in the oxygen vacancy concentration was the primary factor contributing to the decrease in catalytic performance.Based on these findings,a possible catalytic mechanism for CO_(2)cycloaddition with epichlorohydrin was proposed.This work provides a new idea for the controllable preparation of high-performance ZnO catalysts for the synthesis of cyclic carbonates from CO_(2)and epoxides.

Therapeutic sponge prevents postoperative breast cancer recurrence by sustainably dissociating into CD44-targeted nanoplatform

Locoregional recurrence and distant metastasis of breast cancer still pose a significant risk for patients’survival.To address the clinical challenge,functional absorbable sponges(HA-SH/PP-Dox/Lap/COL I(HCNPs))were constructed by biomimetic extracellular matrix of collagen I/hyaluronic acid complex conjugated with doxorubicin/lapatinib(Dox/Lap)-loaded nanoparticles.The HCNPs sponge exhibited excellent clotting ability and blood absorption rate.Worthily,Dox/Lap-loaded nanoparticles were synchronously endowed with a large number of oligo hyaluronic acid segments after degradation,which thus enhanced the ability of targeting into CD44-overexpressed tumor cells.The implantable HCNPs sponge in resected cavity of postoperative 4T1 models inhibited the spread of scattered tumor cells by absorbing the inevitable bleeding.More importantly,CD44 targeted nanoparticle with suitable Dox/Lap proportion continuously released from sponge to kill tumor cells of surrounding HCNPs and those remaining at surgical margin,thus prevented local recurrence as well as distant metastasis.Therefore,the functional HCNPs sponge might provide a safer and more effective strategy for postoperative treatment of cancer.
