Fine-grained grid computing model for Wi-Fi indoor localization in complex environments

The fingerprinting-based approach using the wireless local area network(WLAN)is widely used for indoor localization.However,the construction of the fingerprint database is quite time-consuming.Especially when the position of the access point(AP)or wall changes,updating the fingerprint database in real-time is difficult.An appropriate indoor localization approach,which has a low implementation cost,excellent real-time performance,and high localization accuracy and fully considers complex indoor environment factors,is preferred in location-based services(LBSs)applications.In this paper,we proposed a fine-grained grid computing(FGGC)model to achieve decimeter-level localization accuracy.Reference points(RPs)are generated in the grid by the FGGC model.Then,the received signal strength(RSS)values at each RP are calculated with the attenuation factors,such as the frequency band,three-dimensional propagation distance,and walls in complex environments.As a result,the fingerprint database can be established automatically without manual measurement,and the efficiency and cost that the FGGC model takes for the fingerprint database are superior to previous methods.The proposed indoor localization approach,which estimates the position step by step from the approximate grid location to the fine-grained location,can achieve higher real-time performance and localization accuracy simultaneously.The mean error of the proposed model is 0.36 m,far lower than that of previous approaches.Thus,the proposed model is feasible to improve the efficiency and accuracy of Wi-Fi indoor localization.It also shows high-accuracy performance with a fast running speed even under a large-size grid.The results indicate that the proposed method can also be suitable for precise marketing,indoor navigation,and emergency rescue.

Autophagy plays a pro-apoptotic role in arsenic trioxide-induced cell death of liver cancer

Objective: The effects of arsenic trioxide(As2O3) on hepatocellular carcinoma have been documented widely. Autophagy plays dual roles in the survival and death of cancer cells. Therefore, we investigated the exact role of autophagy in As2O3-induced apoptosis in liver cancer cells.Methods: The viability of hepatoma cells was determined using the MTT assay with or without fetal bovine serum. The rate of apoptosis in liver cancer cells treated with As2O3was evaluated using flow cytometry, Hoechst 33258 staining, and tuNEL assays. The rate of autophagy among liver cancer cells treated with As2O3was detected using immunofluorescence, Western blot assay and transmission electron microscopy.Results: Upon treatment with As2O3, the viability of HepG2 and SMMC-7721 cells was decreased in a time-and dose-dependent manner. The apoptosis rates of both liver cancer cell lines increased with the concentration of As2O3, as shown by flow cytometry. Apoptosis in liver cancer cells treated with As2O3was also shown by the activation of the caspase cascade and the regulation of Bcl-2/Bax expression.Furthermore, As2O3treatment induced autophagy in liver cancer cells;this finding was supported by Western blot, immunofluorescence of LC3-II and beclin 1, and transmission electron microscopy. In liver cancer cells, As2O3inhibited the phosphoinositide 3-kinase/protein kinase B/mammalian target of rapamycin(PI3K/AKT/mTOR) signal pathway that plays a vital role in both apoptosis and autophagy. The PI3K activator SC-79 partially reversed As2O3-induced autophagy and apoptosis. Furthermore, inhibiting autophagy with 3-methyladenine partially reversed the negative effects of As2O3on cell viability.Serum starvation increased autophagy and amplified the effect of As2O3on cell death.Conclusion: As2O3induces apoptosis and autophagy in liver cancer cells. Autophagy induced by As2O3may have a proapoptotic effect that helps to reduce the viability of liver cancer cells. This study provides novel insights into the effects of As2O3against liver cancer.

Large animal models for Huntington's disease research

Huntington'sdisease(HD)isahereditary neurodegenerative disorder for which there is currently no effectivetreatmentavailable.Consequently,the development of appropriate disease models is critical to thoroughly investigate disease progression.The genetic basis of HD involves the abnormal expansion of CAG repeats in the huntingtin(HTT)gene,leading to the expansion of a polyglutamine repeat in the HTT protein.Mutant HTT carrying the expanded polyglutamine repeat undergoes misfolding and forms aggregates in the brain,which precipitate selective neuronal loss in specific brain regions.Animal models play an important role in elucidating the pathogenesis of neurodegenerative disorders such as HD and in identifying potential therapeutic targets.Due to the marked species differences between rodents and larger animals,substantial efforts have been directed toward establishing large animal models for HD research.These models are pivotal for advancing the discovery of novel therapeutic targets,enhancing effective drug delivery methods,and improving treatment outcomes.We have explored the advantages of utilizing large animal models,particularly pigs,in previous reviews.Since then,however,significant progress has been made in developing more sophisticated animal models that faithfully replicate the typical pathology of HD.In the current review,we provide a comprehensive overview of large animal models of HD,incorporating recent findings regarding the establishment of HD knock-in(KI)pigs and their genetic therapy.We also explore the utilization of large animal models in HD research,with a focus on sheep,non-human primates(NHPs),and pigs.Our objective is to provide valuable insights into the application of these large animal models for the investigation and treatment of neurodegenerative disorders.

An integrated MINLP model for multi-party coordination in downstream oil supply chain

Cooperation among enterprises can bring overall and individual performance improvement, and a smooth coordination method is indispensable. However, due to the lack of customized coordination methods, cooperation in the downstream oil supply chain cannot be carried out smoothly. This paper intends to propose a multi-party coordination method to promote cooperation between oil shippers and pipeline operator by optimizing oil transportation, oil substitution and pipeline pricing schemes. An integrated game-theoretic modeling and analysis approach is developed to characterize the operation behaviors of all stakeholders in the downstream oil supply chain. The proposed mixed integer nonlinear programming model constrains supply and demand capacity, transportation routes, oil substitution rules and pipeline freight levels. Logarithm transformation and price discretization are introduced for model linear approximation. Simulation experiments are carried out in the oil distribution system in South China. The results show that compared to the business-as-usual scheme, the new scheme saves transportation cost by 3.48%, increases pipeline turnover by 5.7%, and reduces energy consumption and emissions by 7.66% and 6.77%. It is proved that the proposed method improves the revenue of the whole system, achieves fair revenue distribution, and also improves the energy and environmental benefits of the oil supply chain.

Despite much research in the field of island biogeography,mechanisms regulating insular diversity remain elusive.Here,we aim to explore mechanisms underlying plant species-area relationships in two tropical archipelagoes in the South China Sea.We found positive plant species-area relationships for both coral and continental archipelagoes.However,our results showed that different mechanisms contributed to similar plant species-area relationships between the two archipelagoes.For coral islands,soil nutrients and spatial distance among communities played major roles in shaping plant community structure and species diversity.By contrast,the direct effect of island area,and to a lesser extent,soil nutrients determined plant species richness on continental islands.Intriguingly,increasing soil nutrients availability(N,P,K)had opposite effects on plant diversity between the two archipelagoes.In summary,the habitat quality effect and dispersal limitation are important for regulating plant diversity on coral islands,whereas the passive sampling effect,and to a lesser extent,the habitat quality effect are important for regulating plant diversity on continental islands.More generally,our findings indicate that island plant species-area relationships are outcomes of the interplay of both niche and neutral processes,but the driving mechanisms behind these relationships depends on the type of islands.

The biochemical behavior and mechanism of uranium(Ⅵ)bioreduction induced by natural Bacillus thuringiensis

For a broader understanding of uranium migration affected by microorganisms in natural anaerobic environment,the bioreduction of uranium(Ⅵ)(U(Ⅵ))was revealed in Bacillus thuringiensis,a dominant bacterium strain with potential of uranium-tolerant isolated from uranium contaminated soil.The reduction behavior was systematically investigated by the quantitative analysis of U(Ⅳ)in bacteria,and mechanism was inferred from the pathway of electron transmission.Under anaerobic conditions,appropriate biomass and sodium lactate as electron donor,reduction behavior of U(Ⅵ)induced by B.thuringiensis was restricted by the activity of lactate dehydrogenase,which was directly affected by the initial pH,temperature and initial U(Ⅵ)concentration of bioreduction system.Bioreduction of U(Ⅵ)was driven by the generation of nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide(NADH)from enzymatic reaction of sodium lactate with various dehydrogenase.The transmission of the electrons from bacteria to U(Ⅵ)was mainly supported by the intracellular NADH dehydrogenase-ubiquinone system,this process could maintain the biological activity of cells.

Responses of plant diversity and soil microorganism diversity to nitrogen addition in the desert steppe,China

Nitrogen(N)deposition is a significant aspect of global change and poses a threat to terrestrial biodiversity.The impact of plant-soil microbe relationships to N deposition has recently attracted considerable attention.Soil microorganisms have been proven to provide nutrients for specific plant growth,especially in nutrient-poor desert steppe ecosystems.However,the effects of N deposition on plant-soil microbial community interactions in such ecosystems remain poorly understood.To investigate these effects,we conducted a 6-year N-addition field experiment in a Stipa breviflora Griseb.desert steppe in Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region,China.Four N treatment levels(N0,N30,N50,and N100,corresponding to 0,30,50,and 100 kg N/(hm2•a),respectively)were applied to simulate atmospheric N deposition.The results showed that N deposition did not significantly affect the aboveground biomass of desert steppe plants.N deposition did not significantly reduce the alfa-diversity of plant and microbial communities in the desert steppe,and low and mediate N additions(N30 and N50)had a promoting effect on them.The variation pattern of plant Shannon index was consistent with that of the soil bacterial Chao1 index.N deposition significantly affected the beta-diversity of plants and soil bacteria,but did not significantly affect fungal communities.In conclusion,N deposition led to co-evolution between desert steppe plants and soil bacterial communities,while fungal communities exhibited strong stability and did not undergo significant changes.These findings help clarify atmospheric N deposition effects on the ecological health and function of the desert steppe.

BACKGROUND Hepatic epithelioid angiomyolipoma(HEA)has a low incidence and both clinical manifestations and imaging lack specificity.Thus,it is easy to misdiagnose HEA as other tumors of the liver,especially in the presence of liver diseases such as hepatitis cirrhosis.This article reviewed the diagnosis and treatment of a patient with HEA and alcoholic cirrhosis,and analyzed the literature,in order to improve the understanding of this disease.CASE SUMMARY A 67-year-old male patient with a history of alcoholic cirrhosis was admitted due to the discovery of a space-occupying lesion in the liver.Based on the patient’s history,laboratory examinations,and imaging examinations,a malignant liver tumor was considered and laparoscopic partial hepatectomy was performed.Postoperative pathology showed HEA.During outpatient follow-up,the patient showed no sign of recurrence.CONCLUSION HEA is difficult to make a definite diagnosis before surgery.HEA has the poten-tial for malignant degeneration.If conditions permit,surgical treatment is recom-mended.

An efficient molten-salt electro-deoxidation strategy enabling fast-kinetics and long-life aluminum-selenium batteries

Aluminum-selenium(Al-Se)batteries have been considered as one of the most promising energy storage systems owing to their high capacity,energy density,and cost effectiveness,but Se falls challenges in addressing the shuttle effect of soluble intermediate product and sluggish reaction kinetics in the solid-solid conversion process during cycling.Herein,we propose an unprecedented design concept for fabricating uniform Se/C hollow microspheres with controllable morphologies through low-temperature electro-deoxidation in neutral NaCl-AlCl_(3) molten salt system.Such Se/C hollow microspheres are demonstrated to hold a favorable hollow structure for hosting Se,which can not only suppress the dissolution of soluble intermediate products into the electrolyte,thereby maintaining the structural integrity and maximizing Se utilization of the active material,but also promote the electrical/ionic conductivity,thus facilitating the rapid reaction kinetics during cycling.Accordingly,the as-prepared Se/C hollow microspheres exhibit a high reversible capacity of 720.1 mAh g^(−1)at 500 mA g^(−1).Even at the high current density of 1000 mA g^(−1),Se/C delivers a high discharge capacity of 564.0 mAh g^(−1),long-term stability over 1100 cycles and high Coulombic efficiency of 98.6%.This present work provides valuable insights into short-process recovery of advanced Se-containingmaterials and value-added utilization for energy storage.

MEMS sensors have the advantages of small volume,lightweight,and low cost,therefore,have been widely used in the fields of consumer electronics,industry,health,defence,and aerospace.With their ever-improving performance,MEMS sensors have also started to be used in resource exploration and geophysical applications.However,the requirements of high-precision MEMS sensors for geophysical applications have not been specified in detail.Therefore,this paper systematically analyzes the requirements of high-performance MEMS sensors for prospecting and geophysical applications,including seismic surveillance,Earth tide,volcanic activity monitoring for natural disasters;seismic,gravity,and magnetic resource prospecting;drilling process monitoring and local gravity measurement for gravity aided navigation.Focusing on the above applications,this paper summarizes the state-of-the-art of research on high-performance MEMS sensors for resource exploration and geophysical applications.Several off-the-shelf MEMS sensors have been used for earthquake monitoring,seismic exploration and drilling process monitoring,and a range of MEMS research prototype sensors have successfully been employed for Earth tides measurement and are promising to be used for gravity exploration.MEMS magnetometers should have a lower noise floor to meet the demand for magnetic exploration.MEMS gravity gradiometers are still under early development and will not be deployable in short-term.Highperformance MEMS sensors hold the advantages of low-cost,high integration,and capability of working in extreme environments;therefore,they are likely to gradually replace some conventional geophysical instruments in some application areas.
