Consensus on rapid screening for prodromal Alzheimer's disease in China

Alzheimer's disease(AD)is a common cause of dementia,characterised by cerebral amyloid-βdeposition,pathological tau and neurodegeneration.The prodromal stage of AD(pAD)refers to patients with mild cognitive impairment(MCl)and evidence of AD's pathology.At this stage,disease-modifying interventions should be used to prevent the progression to dementia.Given the inherent heterogeneity of MCl,more specific biomarkers are needed to elucidate the underlying AD's pathology.Although the uses of cerebrospinal fluid and positron emission tomography are widely accepted methods for detecting AD's pathology,their clinical applications are limited by their high costs and invasiveness,particularly in low-income areas in China.Therefore,to improve the early detection of Alzheimer's disease(AD)pathology through cost-effective screening methods,a panel of 45neurologists,psychiatrists andgerontologistswas invited to establish a formal consensus on the screening of pAD in China.The supportive evidence and grades of recommendations are based on a systematic literature review andfocus group discussion.National meetings were held to allow participants to review,vote and provide their expert opinions to reach a consensus.A majority(two-thirds)decision was used for questions for which consensus could not be reached.Recommended screening methods are presented in this publication,including neuropsychological assessment,peripheral biomarkers and brain imaging.In addition,a general workflow for Screening pAD in China is established,which will help clinicians identify individuals at high risk and determine therapeutic targets.

Experimental investigation of evolutive mode-I and mode-II fracture behavior of fiber-reinforced cemented paste backfill:Effect of curing temperature and curing time

The curing temperature-dependent cement hydration causes the nonlinear evolution of fracture behavior and properties of fiber-reinforced cemented paste backfill(CPB)and thus influences the stability of mine backfill materials in deep mines.Therefore,the coupled effect of curing temperature(20,35,and 45℃)and cement hydration at different curing times(3,7,and 28 d)on the mode-I and mode-II fracture behavior and properties of fiber-reinforced CPB is investigated.A comprehensive experimental testing program consisting of semicircular bend tests,direct shear tests,measurement of volumetric water content and matric suction,TG/DTG tests,and SEM observation is carried out.The results show that the coupled thermochemical effect results in strongly nonlinear development of pre-and post-peak behavior of fiber-reinforced CPB.Moreover,the results discover a positive linear correlation between fracture toughness and shear strength parameters and also reveal the vital role played by matric suction in the formation of fracture toughness.Furthermore,predictive functions are developed to estimate the coupled thermochemical effect on the development of KIc and KIIc.Therefore,the findings and the developed mathematical tools have the potential to promote the successful application of fiber-reinforced CPB technology in deep underground mines.

Multiphysics processes in the interfacial transition zone of fiber-reinforced cementitious composites under induced curing pressure and implications for mine backfill materials: A critical review

The mesoscale fiber-matrix interfacial transition zone(FM-ITZ) under induced curing pressure plays a key role in the effectiveness of fiber reinforcement and the engineering application of fiber-reinforced cementitious composites(FRCCs). This critical review establishes the link among induced curing pressure(i.e., external loading condition), multiphysics processes(i.e., internal governing mechanism), and interface behavior(i.e., material behavior) for FRCC materials through analysis of the state-of-the-art research findings on the FM-ITZ of FRCC materials. The following results are obtained. For the mechanical process, the induced curing pressure changes the stress state and enhances multicracking behavior, which can strengthen the FM-ITZ. For the hydraulic process, the strengthened seepage of the FM-ITZ under induced curing pressure weakens the effective stress and exaggerates the deficiency in water retention capacity between the bulk matrix and the FMITZ. For the thermal process, the induced curing pressure causes a steep temperature gradient in the FM-ITZ and thus influences the temperature evolution and thermally-induced microcracks in the FM-ITZ. For the chemical process, the induced curing pressure enhances hydration kinetics and results in the formation of additional hydration products in the FM-ITZ. Moreover, recommendations are proposed on the basis of findings from this review to facilitate the implementation of fiber reinforcement in cemented paste backfill technology.

Spatiotemporal evolution of thermo-hydro-mechanical-chemical processes in cemented paste backfill under interfacial loading

Cemented paste backfill(CPB)and rock interface interaction causes the formation of an interfacial loading and affects the thermal,hydraulic,mechanical,and chemical processes in bulk CPB and thus its in-situ behavior.In this study,a new meter-sized column model is developed to systematically investigate the multiphysics processes in CPB under interfacial loading.The obtained results discover that for the mechanical process,the interfacial loading leads to a reduced settlement and a weakened stress level in CPB.For the hydraulic process,lower matric suction and smaller moisture content coexist in CPB under interfacial loading.For the thermal process,the interfacial loading weakens the porosity-dependent thermal conduction and causes retardation in temperature variation relative to the ambient temperature.For the chemical process,weakened cement hydration with smaller electrical conductivity was observed in CPB under interfacial loading.Therefore,the obtained results reveal the linkage between the interfacial loading and multiphysics processes in CPB and thus contribute to an in-depth understanding of the multiphysics behavior of CPB in underground mines.

Human health ambient water quality criteria for 13 heavy metals and health risk assessment in Taihu Lake

Heavy metals are widely concerning because of their toxicity,persistence,non-degradation and bioaccumulation ability.Iluman health ambient water quality criteria(AWQC)are specific levels of chemicals that can occur in water without harming human health.At present,most countries do not consider the effects of aquatic vegetables in deriving human health AWQC.Therefore,the intake of aquatic vegetables(Brasenia schreberi)was added to the derivation of human health AWQC and a health risk assessment for 13 heavy metals in Taihu Lake.The human health AWQC(consumption of water,fish and aquatic vegetables)values of 13 heavy metals ranged from 0.04(Cd)to 710.87μg/L(Sn),and the intake of B.schreberi had a very significant effect on the human health AWQC for Cu,with a more than 62-fold difference.The hazard quotients of As(2.8),Cd(1.6),Cr(1.4)and Cu(4.86)were higher than the safe level(HQ=1),indicating that As,Cd,Cr and Cu in Taihu Lake posed a significant health risk.Sensitivity analysis showed that the contribution rate of B.schreberi intake to the human health risk from Cu was 91.6%,and all results indicated that the risk of Cu in B.schreberi to human health should be of particular concern.This study adds the consideration of aquatic vegetable consumption to the traditional method of human health AWQC derivation and risk assessments for the first time,and this approach can promote the development of risk assessments and water quality criteria.

Time- and temperature-dependence of compressive and tensile behaviors of polypropylene fiber-reinforced cemented paste backfill

The understanding of compressive and tensile behaviors of polypropylene fiber-reinforced cemented paste backfill(FR-CPB)play crucial roles in the successful implementation of reinforcement technique in underground mine backfilling operations.However,very limited studies have been performed to gain insight into the evolution of compressive and tensile behaviors and associated mechanical properties of FR-CPB under various curing temperatures from early to advanced ages.Thus,this study aims to investigate the time(7,28,and 90 d)-and temperature(20°C,35°C,and 45°C)-dependence of constitutive behavior and mechanical properties of FR-CPB.The obtained results show that pre-and post-failure behaviors of FR-CPB demonstrate strongly curing temperature-dependence from early to advanced ages.Moreover,the pseudo-hardening behavior is sensitive to curing temperature,especially at early ages.Furthermore,the mechanical properties including elastic modulus,material stiffness,strengths,brittleness,cohesion,and internal friction angle of FR-CPB show increasing trends with curing temperature as curing time elapses.Additionally,a predictive model is developed to capture the strong correlation between compressive and tensile strength of FR-CPB.The findings of this study will contribute to the successful implementation of FR-CPB technology.

A multiphysics-viscoplastic cap model for simulating blast response of cemented tailings backfill

Although a large number of previous researches have significantly contributed to the understanding of the quasi-static mechanical behavior of cemented tailings backfill,an evolutive porous medium used in underground mine cavities,very few efforts have been made to improve the knowledge on its response under sudden dynamic loading during the curing process.In fact,there is a great need for such information given that cemented backfill structures are often subjected to blast loadings due to mine exploitations.In this study,a coupled thermo-hydro-mechanical-chemical(THMC)-viscoplastic cap model is developed to describe the behavior of cementing mine backfill material under blast loading.A THMC model for cemented backfill is adopted to evaluate its behavior and evolution of its properties in curing processes with coupled thermal,hydraulic,mechanical and chemical factors.Then,the model is coupled to a Perzyna type of viscoplastic model with a modified smooth surface cap envelope and a variable bulk modulus,in order to reasonably capture the nonlinear and rate-dependent behaviors of the cemented tailings backfill under blast loading.All of the parameters required for the variable-modulus viscoplastic cap model were obtained by applying the THMC model to reproducing evolution of cemented paste backfill(CPB)properties in the curing process.Thus,the behavior of hydrating cemented backfill under high-rate impacts can be evaluated under any curing time of concern.The validation results of the proposed model indicate a good agreement between the experimental and the simulated results.The authors believe that the proposed model will contribute to a better understanding of the performance of hydrating cemented backfill under blasting,and also to practical risk management of backfill structures associated with such a dynamic condition.

DEAR EDITOR,Big cats,such as Amur tigers(Panthera tigris altaica)and Amur leopards(P.pardus orientalis),are apex predator and have evolved specialized traits for hunting and carnivory(Moya et al.,2022),thus playing a crucial role in maintaining biodiversity and ecosystem integrity by regulating prey-predator dynamics.However,human-induced pressures,habitat fragmentation,and environmental alterations have restricted these species in small and isolated populations.Currently,all extant big cats are categorized as endangered or threatened according to their conservation status.Amur tigers and Amur leopards share overlapping geographic ranges,habitats,and certain prey species in the forests of Northeast Asia(Jiang et al.,2015).To reduce interspecies conflict,these carnivores exhibit differentiated dietary and temporal niches.Amur tigers predominantly prey on large ungulates,while Amur leopards hunt small to medium-sized animals(Sugimoto et al.,2016).Additionally,they occupy different temporal niches,with tigers being active at night and leopards more active during the day.Despite spatial and temporal niche partitioning,interspecific competition between these two species is inevitable.Tigers,benefiting from their greater size,have a competitive advantage over leopards,which can manifest in occasional leopard predation by tigers and declines in leopard populations with increasing tiger density(Jiang et al.,2015).Tigers also displace leopards from marginal habitats in nature reserves where they coexist.

Monolithically integrated CoP nanowire array： An on/off switch for effective on-demand hydrogen generation via hydrolysis of NaBH4 and NH3BH3

The issues of hydrogen generation and storage have hindered the widespread use and commercialization of hydrogen fuel cell vehicles. It is thus highly attractive, but the design and development of highly active non-noble-metal catalysts for on-demand hydrogen release from alkaline NaBH4 solution under mild conditions remains a key challenge. Herein, we describe the use of CoP nanowire array integrated on a Ti mesh （CoP NA/Ti） as a three-dimensional （3D） monolithic catalyst for efficient hydrolytic dehydrogenation of NaBH4 in basic solutions. The CoP NAFFi works as an on/off switch for on-demand hydrogen generation at a rate of 6,500 mL/（min.g） and a low activation energy of 41 kJ/mol. It is highly robust for repeated usage after recycling, without sacrificing catalytic performance. Remarkably, this catalyst also performs efficiently for the hydrolysis of NH3BH3.
