Harness High-Temperature Thermal Energy via Elastic Thermoelectric Aerogels

Despite notable progress in thermoelectric(TE)materials and devices,developing TE aerogels with high-temperature resistance,superior TE performance and excellent elasticity to enable self-powered high-temperature monitoring/warning in industrial and wearable applications remains a great challenge.Herein,a highly elastic,flame-retardant and high-temperature-resistant TE aerogel,made of poly(3,4-ethylene dioxythiophene):poly(styrenesulfonate)/single-walled carbon nanotube(PEDOT:PSS/SWCNT)composites,has been fabricated,displaying attractive compression-induced power factor enhancement.The as-fabricated sensors with the aerogel can achieve accurately pressure stimuli detection and wide temperature range monitoring.Subsequently,a flexible TE generator is assembled,consisting of 25 aerogels connected in series,capable of delivering a maximum output power of 400μW when subjected to a temperature difference of 300 K.This demonstrates its outstanding high-temperature heat harvesting capability and promising application prospects for real-time temperature monitoring on industrial high-temperature pipelines.Moreover,the designed self-powered wearable sensing glove can realize precise wide-range temperature detection,high-temperature warning and accurate recognition of human hand gestures.The aerogel-based intelligent wearable sensing system developed for firefighters demonstrates the desired self-powered and highly sensitive high-temperature fire warning capability.Benefitting from these desirable properties,the elastic and high-temperature-resistant aerogels present various promising applications including self-powered high-temperature monitoring,industrial overheat warning,waste heat energy recycling and even wearable healthcare.

Self-assembled aerogel sheet electrodes of thermocells for low-grade heat harvest

Efficiently harvesting low-grade heat is crucial for sustainable energy management. Thermocells(TECs), inducing heat-toelectricity conversion via the thermogalvanic effect, have thus drawn tremendous attention in recent years. This study introduces a self-assembly approach for fabricating aerogel sheet electrodes(ASEs) tailored for TECs. The crafted ASEs retain a remarkable porous architecture with approximately 95% porosity, even with their slimmed-down thickness. Results reveal that the electrode composition has minimal influence on the thermopower of TECs. Notably, the porous ASE with tunned composition demonstrates an optimal effective surface area for the thermogalvanic effect, resulting in enhanced output current density. This balances the desirable traits of electrode compactness with abundant redox active sites, positioning it favorably against conventional bulky electrode designs. The TECs utilizing the optimized ASE achieve a peak output power of 22.10 μW cm^(-2)under a temperature difference of 30 K. Furthermore, a tubular TEC device is readily assembled and specially designed for harvesting heat energy from hot fluids. These findings underscore the potential of composite electrodes in the realm of low-grade heat harvest, paving the way for broader applications in sustainable energy solutions.

Facile low-temperature supercritical carbonization method to prepare high-loading nickel single atom catalysts for efficient photodegradation of tetracycline

Environmental photocatalysis is a promising technology for treating antibiotics in wastewater.In this study,a supercritical carbonization method was developed to synthesize a single-atom photocatalyst with a high loading of Ni(above 5 wt.%)anchored on a carbonnitrogen-silicate substrate for the efficient photodegradation of a ubiquitous environmental contaminant of tetracycline(TC).The photocatalyst was prepared from an easily obtained metal-biopolymer-inorganic supramolecular hydrogel,followed by supercritical drying and carbonization treatment.The low-temperature(300℃)supercritical ethanol treatment prevents the excessive structural degradation of hydrogel and greatly reduces the metal clustering and aggregation,which contributed to the high Ni loading.Atomic characterizations confirmed that Ni was present at isolated sites and stabilized by Ni-N and Ni-O bonds in a Ni-(N/O)_(6)-C/SiC configuration.A 5%Ni-C-Si catalyst,which performed the best among the studied catalysts,exhibited a wide visible light response with a narrow bandgap of 1.45 eV that could efficiently and repeatedly catalyze the oxidation of TC with a conversion rate of almost 100% within 40 min.The reactive species trapping experiments and electron spin resonance(ESR)tests demonstrated that the h+,and·O_(2)-were mainly responsible for TC degradation.The TC degradation mechanism and possible reaction pathways were provided also.Overall,this study proposed a novel strategy to synthesize a high metal loading singleatom photocatalyst that can efficiently remove TC with high concentrations,and this strategy might be extended for synthesis of other carbon-based single-atom catalysts with valuable properties.

Intertwined depressive and cognitive trajectories and the risk of dementia and death in older adults:a competing risk analysis

Background Depressive symptoms and cognitive impairment often interact,rendering their associations controversial.To date,their joint trajectories and associations with dementia and death remain underexplored.Aims To explore the interactions between depressive symptoms and cognitive function,their developmental trajectories and the associations with all-cause dementia,Alzheimer’s disease(AD)and all-cause death in older adults.Methods Data were from the Health and Retirement Study.Depressive symptoms and cognitive function were measured using the 8-item Centre for Epidemiologic Studies Depression Scale and the Telephone Interview of Cognitive Status,respectively.All-cause dementia and AD were defined by self-reported or proxy-reported physician diagnoses.All-cause death was determined by interviews.The restricted cubic spline,group-based trajectory modelling and subdistribution hazard regression were used.Results Significant interactions between depressive symptoms and cognitive function in 2010 in their association with new-onset all-cause dementia and AD from 2010 to 2020 were found,especially in women(p for interaction<0.05).Independent trajectory analysis showed that emerging or high(vs no)depressive trajectories and poor or rapidly decreased cognitive trajectories(vs very good)from 1996 to 2010 were at significantly higher risk of subsequent all-cause dementia,AD and all-cause death.15 joint trajectories of depressive symptoms and cognitive function from 1996 to 2010 were determined,where rapidly decreased cognitive function was more common in those with no depressive symptoms.Compared with older adults with the trajectory of no depressive symptoms and very good cognitive function,those with the trajectory of no depressive symptoms but rapidly decreased cognitive function were much more likely to develop new-onset all-cause dementia and death,with subdistribution hazard ratios(95%confidence intervals)of 4.47(2.99 to 6.67)and 1.84(1.43 to 2.36),especially in women.Conclusions To effectively mitigate the risk o

Single-atom catalysts(SACs)with high catalytic activity as well as great stability are demonstrating great promotion in electrocatalytic energy conversion,which is also a big challenge to achieve.Herein,we proposed a facile synthetic strategy to construct nickel-iron bimetallic hydroxide nanoribbon stabilized single-atom iridium catalysts(Ir-NiFe-OH),where the nickel-iron hydroxide nanoribbon not only can serve as good electronic conductor,but also can well stabilize and fully expose single-atom sites.Adopted as catalyst for urea oxidation reaction(UOR),it exhibited excellent UOR performance that it only needed a low operated potential of 1.38 V to achieve the current density of 100 mA·cm^(-2).In-situ Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy,X-ray absorption spectrum,and density functional theory calculations proved that Ir species are active centers and the existence of both Ni and Fe in the local structure of Ir atom can optimize the d-band center of Ir species,promoting the adsorption of intermediates and desorption of products for UOR.The hydrogen evolution reaction(HER)/UOR electrocatalytic cell demanded voltages of 1.46 and 1.50 V to achieve 50 and 100 mA·cm^(-2),respectively,which demonstrated a higher activity and better stability than those of conventional catalysts.This work opens a new avenue to develop catalysts for UORs with boosted activity and stability.

Study on Quantitative Precipitation Estimation by Polarimetric Radar Using Deep Learning

Accurate radar quantitative precipitation estimation(QPE)plays an essential role in disaster prevention and mitigation.In this paper,two deep learning-based QPE networks including a single-parameter network and a multi-parameter network are designed.Meanwhile,a self-defined loss function(SLF)is proposed during modeling.The dataset includes Shijiazhuang S-band dual polarimetric radar(CINRAD/SAD)data and rain gauge data within the radar’s 100-km detection range during the flood season of 2021 in North China.Considering that the specific propagation phase shift(KDP)has a roughly linear relationship with the precipitation intensity,KDP is set to 0.5°km^(-1 )as a threshold value to divide all the rain data(AR)into a heavy rain(HR)and light rain(LR)dataset.Subsequently,12 deep learning-based QPE models are trained according to the input radar parameters,the precipitation datasets,and whether an SLF was adopted,respectively.The results suggest that the effects of QPE after distinguishing rainfall intensity are better than those without distinguishing,and the effects of using SLF are better than those that used MSE as a loss function.A Z-R relationship and a ZH-KDP-R synthesis method are compared with deep learning-based QPE.The mean relative errors(MRE)of AR models using SLF are improved by 61.90%,51.21%,and 56.34%compared with the Z-R relational method,and by 38.63%,42.55%,and 47.49%compared with the synthesis method.Finally,the models are further evaluated in three precipitation processes,which manifest that the deep learning-based models have significant advantages over the traditional empirical formula methods.

Toxicity of the disinfectant benzalkonium chloride(C_(14))towards cyanobacterium Microcystis results from its impact on the photosynthetic apparatus and cell metabolism

Quaternary ammonium compounds(QACs)are commonly used in a variety of consumer and commercial products,typically as a component of disinfectants.During the COVID-19 pandemic,QACs became one of the primary agents utilized to inactivate the SARS CoV-2 virus on surfaces.However,the ecotoxicological effects of QACs upon aquatic organisms have not been fully assessed.In this study,we examined the effects of a widely used QAC(benzalkonium chloride-C_(14),BAC-14)on two toxigenic Microcystis strains and one non-toxigenic freshwater Microcystis strain and carried out an analysis focused on primary,adaptive and compensatory stress responses at apical(growth and photosynthesis)and metabolic levels.This analysis revealed that the two toxic Microcystis strains were more tolerant than the non-toxic strain,with 96 hr-EC_(50)values of 0.70,0.76,and 0.38 mg/L BAC-14 for toxigenic M.aeruginosa FACHB-905,toxigenic M.aeruginosa FACHB-469,and non-toxigenic M.wesenbergii FACHB-908,respectively.The photosynthetic activities of the Microcystis,assessed via F_(v)/F_(m) values,were significantly suppressed under 0.4 mg/L BAC-14.Furthermore,this analysis revealed that BAC-14 altered 14,12,and 8 metabolic pathways in M.aeruginosa FACHB-905,M.aeruginosa FACHB-469,and M.wesenbergii FACHB-908,respectively.It is noteworthy that BAC-14 enhanced the level of extracellular microcystin production in the toxigenic Microcystis strains,although cell growth was not significantly affected.Collectively,these data show that BAC-14 disrupted the physiological and metabolic status of Microcystis cells and stimulated the production and release of microcystin,which could result in damage to aquatic systems.

The endogenous antioxidant ability of royal jelly in Drosophila is independent of Keap1/Nrf2 by activating oxidoreductase activity

Royal jelly(RJ)is a biologically active substance secreted by the hypopharyngeal and mandibular glands of worker honeybees.It is widely claimed that RJ reduces oxidative stress.However,the antioxidant activity of RJ has mostly been determined by in vitro chemical detection methods or by external administration drugs that cause oxidative stress.Whether RJ can clear the endogenous production of reactive oxygen species(ROS)in cells remains largely unknown.Here,we systematically investigated the antioxidant properties of RJ using several endogenous oxidative stress models of Drosophila.We found that RJ enhanced sleep quality of aging Drosophila,which is decreased due to an increase of oxidative damage with age.RJ supplementation improved survival and suppressed ROS levels in gut cells of flies upon exposure to hydrogen peroxide or to the neurotoxic agent paraquat.Moreover,RJ supplementation moderated levels of ROS in endogenous gut cells and extended lifespan after exposure of flies to heat stress.Sleep deprivation leads to accumulation of ROS in the gut cells,and RJ attenuated the consequences of oxidative stress caused by sleep loss and prolonged lifespan.Mechanistically,RJ prevented cell oxidative damage caused by heat stress or sleep deprivation,with the antioxidant activity in vivo independent of Keap1/Nrf2 signaling.RJ supplementation activated oxidoreductase activity in the guts of flies,suggesting its ability to inhibit endogenous oxidative stress and maintain health,possibly in humans.

PAL-BERT:An Improved Question Answering Model

In the field of natural language processing(NLP),there have been various pre-training language models in recent years,with question answering systems gaining significant attention.However,as algorithms,data,and computing power advance,the issue of increasingly larger models and a growing number of parameters has surfaced.Consequently,model training has become more costly and less efficient.To enhance the efficiency and accuracy of the training process while reducing themodel volume,this paper proposes a first-order pruningmodel PAL-BERT based on the ALBERT model according to the characteristics of question-answering(QA)system and language model.Firstly,a first-order network pruning method based on the ALBERT model is designed,and the PAL-BERT model is formed.Then,the parameter optimization strategy of the PAL-BERT model is formulated,and the Mish function was used as an activation function instead of ReLU to improve the performance.Finally,after comparison experiments with traditional deep learning models TextCNN and BiLSTM,it is confirmed that PALBERT is a pruning model compression method that can significantly reduce training time and optimize training efficiency.Compared with traditional models,PAL-BERT significantly improves the NLP task’s performance.

Energy Management of Price-maker Community Energy Storage by Stochastic Dynamic Programming

In this paper,we propose an analytical stochastic dynamic programming(SDP)algorithm to address the optimal management problem of price-maker community energy storage.As a price-maker,energy storage smooths price differences,thus decreasing energy arbitrage value.However,this price-smoothing effect can result in significant external welfare changes by reduc-ing consumer costs and producer revenues,which is not negligible for the community with energy storage systems.As such,we formulate community storage management as an SDP that aims to maximize both energy arbitrage and community welfare.To incorporate market interaction into the SDP format,we propose a framework that derives partial but sufficient market information to approximate impact of storage operations on market prices.Then we present an analytical SDP algorithm that does not require state discretization.Apart from computational efficiency,another advantage of the analytical algorithm is to guide energy storage to charge/discharge by directly comparing its current marginal value with expected future marginal value.Case studies indicate community-owned energy storage that maximizes both arbitrage and welfare value gains more benefits than storage that maximizes only arbitrage.The proposed algorithm ensures optimality and largely reduces the computational complexity of the standard SDP.Index Terms-Analytical stochastic dynamic programming,energy management,energy storage,price-maker,social welfare.
