AIM: To investigate gene expression profiles of intergringenes in hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) through theusage of Atlas Human Cancer Array membranes, semi-quantitative reverse transcription polymerase chainreaction (RT-PCR) and Northern ***: Hybridization of cDNA array membrane wasperformed with α 32P-labeled cDNA probes synthesizedfrom RNA isolated from hepatocellular carcinoma andadjacent non-cirrhotic liver. AtlasImage, which is asoftware specific to array, was used to analyze theresult. RT-PCR of 24 pairs specimen and Northern blotof 4 pairs specimen were used to confirm the expressionpattern of some intergrin genes identified by Atlasarrays ***: Among 588 genes spotted in membrane, 17genes were related to intergrin. Four genes were up-regulated, such as intergrin alpha8, beta1, beta7 andbeta8 in HCC. Whereas there were no genes down-regulated in HCC. RT-PCR and Northern blot analysisof intergrin beta1 gene gave results consistent withcDNA array ***: Investigation of these intergrin genesshould help to disclose the molecular mechanism of thecell adhesion, invasive and metastasis of HCC. A fewgenes are reported to have changed in HCC for the firsttime. The quick and high-throughout method of profilinggene expression by cDNA array provides us overviewof key factors that may involved in HCC, and may findthe clue of the study of HCC metastasis and moleculartargets of anti-metastasis therapy. The preciserelationship between the altered genes and HCC is amatter of further investigation.

AIM: Regional chemotherapy using hepatic arterycatheters is a good method of treating patients withcolorectsl cancer liver metastases. We investigated thesurvival of patients with liver metastases fromcolorectal cancer using 5-fluorouracil (5-FU) andmitomycin C Cthrough implantable hepatic arterialinfusion pert. METHODS: Seventy-five patients with inoperable livermetastases from colorectal cancer were includedbetween March, 1992 and November, 2001. We placedimplantable hepatic arterial catheter (HAC) port bylaparotomy. 5-FU, 1 000 mg/m2/d continuous infusionfor five days every four weeks, was delivered in thehepatic arterial catheter through the port. MitomycinC, 30 mg/m2/d infusion in the first day every cyclethrough the port. Response to the treatment wasevaluated by serial determinations of plasma CEA andimaging techniques consisting of computerizedtomography and sonography of ***: Sixty-eight were performed hepatic arterychemotherapy and fifty-six were followed up amongseventy-five HAC patients. Twenty-six patients(46.4 %)have responded and 4 complete remission wereachieved. Eight patients (14.3 %) had stable livermetastases. Twenty-two patients (39.3 %) wereprogressed with increased tumor size and ***-nine patients(51.8% ) had a decreased serumCEA level, while 10 patients (17.9 %) were stable and17 patients (30.4 %) had an increased serum CEA *** were no operative death in this ***, which occurred in 18 patients (32.1%),were as followed: hepatic artery thrombosis in 11,Upper gastric and intestinal bleeding in 3, liver abscessin 1, pocket infection in 1, cholangitis in 1, and hepaticartery pseudo-aneurysm in one ***: Combined infusion of 5-FU and mitomycinC by hepatic artery catheter port is an effectivetreatment for liver metastases from colorectal *** high response and lower complication rates provethe adjuvant treatment of colorectal cancer with thistreatment.

AIM: To study local therapeutic efficacy, side effects, andcomplications of radiofrequency ablation (RFA), whichis emerging as a new method for the treatment ofpatients with hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) withcirrhosis or chronic hepatitis and metastatic liver ***: Thirty-six patients with primary andsecondary liver cancers (21 with primaryhepatocellular carcinoma, 12 with colorectal cancerliver metastases and 3 with other malignant livermetastases), which were considered not suitable forcurative resection, were include in this study. Theywere treated either with RFA (RITA2000, MountainView, California, USA) percutaneously (n=20)orintraoperatively (n=16).The procedures wereperformed using the ultrasound guidance. The qualityof RFA were based on monitoring of equipments andsubject feeling of the practitioners. Patients treatedwith RFA was followed according to clinical findings,radiographic images, and tumor ***: Thirty-six patients underwent RFA for 48nodules. RFA was used to treat an average 1.3 lesionsper patient, and the median size of treated lesions was2.5 cm (range, 0.5-9 cm). The average hospital staywas 5.6 days overall (2.8 days for percutaneous casesand 7.9 days for open operations). Seven patientsunderwent a second RFA procedure (sequentialablations). Sixteen HCC patients with a high level ofalpha fetoprotein (AFP) and 9 colorectal cancer livermetastases patients with a high level of serumcarcinoembryonic antigen (CEA) have a great reductionbenefited from RFA. Four (11.1 %) patients hadcomplications: one skin burn; one postoperativehemorrhage; one cholecystitis and one hepatic abscessassociated with percutaneous ablations of a largelesion. There were 4 deaths: 3 patients died from localand system diseases (1 at 7 month, 1 at 9 month, and 1at 12 month), 1 patients died from cardiovascular shock,but no RFA-related death. Objective: Although a new matrix formulation fentanyl has been used throughout the world for cancer pain management, few data about its efficacy and clinical outcomes associated with its use in chinese patients have been obtained. This study aimed to assess the efficacy and safety of the new system in chinese patients with moderate to severe cancer pain. Methods: A total of 474 patients with moderate to severe cancer pain were enrolled in this study and were treated with the new transdermal fentanyl matrix patch (TDF) up to 2 weeks. All the patients were asked to record pain intensity, side effects, quality of life (QOL), adherence and global satisfaction. The initial dose of fentanyl was 25 ?g/h titrated with opioid or according to National Comprehensive Cancer Network (NCCN) guidelines. Transdermal fentanyl was changed every three days. Results: After 2 weeks. The mean pain intensity of the 459 evaluated patients decreased significantly from 5.63?1.26 to 2.03?1.46 (P<0.0001). The total remission rate was 91.29%, of which moderate remission rate 53.16%, obvious remission rate 25.49% and complete remission rate 12.64%. The rate of adverse events was 33.75%, 18.78% of which were moderate and 3.80% were severe. The most frequent adverse events were constipation and nausea. No fatal events were observed. The quality of life was remarkably improved after the treatment (P<0.0001). Conclusion: The new TDF is effective and safe in treating patients with moderate to severe cancer pain, and can significantly improve the quality of life.

The Omicron variant of the severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2(SARS‑CoV‑2)infected a substantial proportion of chinese population,and understanding the factors underlying the severity of the disease and fatality is valuable for future prevention and clinical *** recruited 64 patients with invasive ventilation for COVID-19 and performed metatranscriptomic sequencing to profile host transcriptomic profiles,plus viral,bacterial,and fungal content,as well as virulence factors and examined their relationships to 28-day mortality were *** addition,the bronchoalveolar lavage fluid(BALF)samples from invasive ventilated hospital/community-acquired pneumonia patients(HAP/CAP)sampled in 2019 were included for *** analysis revealed that all Omicron strains belong to BA.5 and BF.7 sub-lineages,with no difference in 28-day mortality between *** to HAP/CAP cohort,invasive ventilated COVID-19 patients have distinct host transcriptomic and microbial signatures in the lower respiratory tract;and in the COVID-19 non-survivors,we found significantly lower gene expressions in pathways related viral processes and positive regulation of protein localization to plasma membrane,higher abundance of opportunistic pathogens including bacterial Alloprevotella,Caulobacter,Escherichia-Shigella,Ralstonia and fungal Aspergillus sydowii and Penicillium *** analysis further revealed significant associations between host immune responses and microbial compositions,besides synergy within viral,bacterial,and fungal *** study presents the relationships of lower respiratory tract microbiome and transcriptome in invasive ventilated COVID-19 patients,providing the basis for future clinical treatment and reduction of fatality.
