Tar DNA-binding protein 43(TDP-43,encoded by the gene TARDBP)neuronal and glial inclusions have unified amyotrophic lateral sclerosis(ALS,~97%of all cases),a fatal adult onset motor neuron disease characterized by the selective loss of upper and lower motor neurons,and frontotemporal dementia(FTD),and sporadic FTD(~45%of all cases),a common form of dementia characterized by progressive deterioration in behavior,personality and/or language,into one disease *** the majority of ALS-FTD cases are sporadic,identification of mutations in the TARDBP gene that cause familial ALS,strongly supports the idea that TDP-43 participates in the pathogenesis of ALSFTD,not merely a secondary *** several other genes associated with familial ALS and FTD,including c9ORF72.

Over the course of industrial manufacturing,additional heat within the extract systems is usually released into the atmosphere and its intrinsic energy is *** paper investigated a cold abatement smoke extract system for a fire testing wall furnace to determine the viability in recovering heat from the hot *** scenarios were investigated:1)the extract system was closed and only 300°c smoke was present;2)the system took in ambient air around the furnace and heat recovery occurred at 80°c in smoky air;3)the smoke had been removed from the air and the temperature was 60°*** was found that there was a significant build-up of soot on Scenarios 1&2 with a build-up rate of 0.25𝜇m/s which totalled 2.7 mm of soot after a three-hour *** soot had a low heat transfer rate and therefore acted as an insulator on the heat exchanger which reduced the efficiency significantly of it over *** to this loss in efficiency,it was more viable to recover heat in Scenario 3 at 60°c in clean air than it was to recover heat at 300°c or 80°c in smoky *** results show that having clean air was more important than a higher temperature when it came from recovering heat from a cold abatement system for a fire testing *** paper contributes to reveal the possibilities of harnessing the“waste heat”for use in other applications in the vicinity of the manufacturing processes,such as heating water within a central heating plant,domestic hot water or electricity generation,or re-cycled within the industrial plant itself.

The development of an offshore gas field involves production of oil and gas from subsea wells. Design considerations for a particular subsea system have identified the maximum temperature for operations which is greater than 130 ~c. consequently, for large diameter flowlines, this precludes the use of duplex stainless steels as cRA＇s （corrosion resistant alloys） for service under the expected operating conditions. Attention has therefore focused on alternative cRA＇s such as austenitic stainless steels and Ni based alloys as mechanically clad or lined clad pipe for carbon steel subsea gas flowlines. One design concern is the recognized temperature limit for cRA materials, such as 316L stainless steel and similar alloys in production fluids is taken to be 120 ~c. This then raises concerns surrounding their suitability for providing sufficient corrosion resistance/stress corrosion cracking resistance in gas environments containing cOz and H2S at temperatures higher than 130 ~c. It was recommended that specific testing should be completed at temperatures greater than 133 ~c to establish that candidate materials are still corrosion resistant. The focus of this study was to develop, implement and assess a testing program that would predict the suitability of a series of cPA＇s alloys for use in mechanical clad/lined subsea gas flowlines, with respect to pitting corrosion, crevice corrosion and stress corrosion cracking. This paper will present the rationale adopted for this testing program to simulate the stringent operating conditions, the results from these findings and the overall assessment/integrity of the candidate alloys selected.

Reducing power dissipation in electro-optic modulators is a key step for widespread application of silicon photonics to optical *** this work,we design Mach–Zehnder modulators in the silicon-on-insulator platform,which make use of slow light in a waveguide grating and of a reverse-biased p-n junction with interleaved contacts along the waveguide *** optimizing the junction parameters,we discuss the full simulation of the modulator in order to find a proper trade-off among various figures of merit,such as modulation efficiency,insertion loss,cutoff frequency,optical modulation amplitude,and dissipated energy per *** with conventional structures(with lateral p-n junction and/or in rib waveguides without slow light)highlights the importance of combining slow light with the interleaved p-n junction,thanks to the increased overlap between the travelling optical wave and the depletion *** a surprising result,the modulator performance is improved over an optical bandwidth that is much wider than the slow-light bandwidth.

current advances in basic stem cell research and tissue engineering augur well for the development of improved cultured skin tissue substitutes:a class of products that is still fraught with limitations for clinical *** the ability to grow autologous keratinocytes in-vitro from a small skin biopsy into sheets of stratified epithelium(within 3 to 4 weeks)helped alleviate the problem of insufficient donor site for extensive burn,many burn units still have to grapple with insufficient skin allografts which are used as intermediate wound coverage after burn *** offered by tissue-engineered skin dermal replacements to meet emergency demand have been used fairly *** the availability of these commercial products,they all suffer from the same problems of extremely high cost,sub-normal skin microstructure and inconsistent engraftment,especially in full thickness *** practice for severe burn treatment has since evolved to incorporate these tissue-engineered skin substitutes,usually as an adjunct to speed up epithelization for wound closure and/or to improve quality of life by improving the functional and cosmetic results *** review seeks to bring the reader through the beginnings of skin tissue engineering,the utilization of some of the key products developed for the treatment of severe burns and the hope of harnessing stem cells to improve on current practice.
