Zinc （Zn） deficiency is a m.jor soil constraint lim.ting rice crop growth and yield, yet the genetic control of tolerance m.chanism. is still poorly understood. Here, we presented prom.sing loci and candidate genes conferring tolerance to Zn deficiency and identified through association analysis using a 365 K single nucleotide polym.rphism.（SNP） m.rker array in a diverse aus （sem.-wild type rice） panel. Tolerant accessions exhib.ted higher growth rate with relatively rare stress sym.tom.. Two loci on chrom.som.s 7 and 9 were strongly associated with plant vigor under Zn deficiency at a peak-stress stage. b.sed on previous m.croarray data from.the sam. experim.ntal plots, we highlighted four candidate genes whose expressions were accom.anied b. significant genotype and/or environm.nt effects under Zn deficiency. This paper discusses som. of the concept of m.deling surgery outcom.. It is also an attem.t to offer a road m.p for progress. This paper m.y serve as a com.on ground of discussion for b.th com.unities i.e surgeons and com.utational scientist in its b.oadest sense. Predicting surgery outcom. is a very difficult task. All patients are different, and m.ltiple factors such as genetic, or environm.nt conditions plays a role. The difficulty is to construct m.dels that are com.lex enough to address som. of these significant m.ltiscale elem.nts and sim.le enough to b. used in clinical conditions and calib.ated on patient data. We will pro- vide a m.ltilevel progressive approach inspired b. two applications in surgery that we have b.en working on. One is ab.ut vein graft adaptation after a transplantation, the other is the recovery of cosm.sis outcom. after a b.east lum.ectom.. This work, that is still very m.ch in progress, m.y teach us som. lessons. We are convinced that the digital revolution that is transform.ng the working environm.nt of the surgeon m.kes closer collab.ration b.tween surgeons and com.utational scientist unavoidab.e. We b.lieve that ＂com.utational surgery＂ will allow the com.unity to develop predictive m.del of the surgery outcom. and greatprogresses in surgery procedures that goes far b.yond the operating room.procedural aspect.

The aim.of the present work is to investigate the num.rical m.deling of interfacial cracks that m.y appear at the interface b.tween two isotropic elastic m.terials. The extended finite elem.nt m.thod is em.loyed to analyze b.ittle and b.-m.terial interfacial fatigue crack growth b. com.uting the m.xed m.de stress intensity factors(SIF). Three different approaches are introduced to com.ute the SIFs. In the first one, m.xed m.de SIF is deduced from.the com.utation of the contour integral as per the classical J-integral m.thod,whereas a displacem.nt m.thod is used to evaluate the SIF b. using either one or two displacem.nt jum.s located along the crack path in the second and third approaches. The displacem.nt jum. m.thod is rather classical for m.no-m.terials,b.t has to our knowledge not b.en used up to now for a b.m.terial. Hence, use of displacem.nt jum. for characterizing b.-m.terial cracks constitutes the m.in contrib.tion of the present study. Several b.nchm.rk tests including param.tric studies are perform.d to show the effectiveness of these com.utational m.thodologies for SIF considering static and fatigue prob.em. of b.-m.terial structures. It is found that results b.sed on the displacem.nt jum. m.thods are in a very good agreem.nt with those of exact solutions, such as for the J-integral m.thod, b.t with a larger dom.in of applicab.lity and a b.tter num.rical efficiency(less tim. consum.ng and less spurious b.undary effect).

Sm.ll m.xer im.eller design is not tailored for granulation b.cause im.ellers are intended for a wide range of processes. The aim.of this research was to evaluate the perform.nces of several im.ellers to provide guidance on the selection and design for the purposes of granulation. Lactose granules were produced using wet granulation with water as a b.nder. A Kenwood Km.70 m.xer was used as a standard apparatus and five im.eller designs with different shapes and surface areas were used. The efficacy of granulate for- m.tion was m.asured b. adding an optically sensitive tracer to determ.ne variations in active ingredient content across random.sam.les of granules from.the sam. size classes. It was found that im.eller design influenced the hom.geneity of the granules and therefore can affect final product perform.nce. The vari- ation in active ingredient content across granules of differing size was also investigated. The results show that sm.ll granules were m.re potent than larger granules,

The goal of this study was to understand the m.croscopic m.chanical structure and function of b.ological m.scle with respect to its dynam.c role in the contraction. A recently pub.ished m.scle m.del, deriving the hyperb.lic force-velocity relation from.first-order m.chanical principles, predicts different force-velocity operating points for different load situations. With a new approach, this m.del could b. sim.lified and thus, transferred into a num.rical sim.lation and a hardware experim.nt. Two types of quick release experim.nts were perform.d in sim.lation and with the hardware setup, which represent two extrem. cases of the contraction dynam.cs： against a constant force （isotonic） and against an inertial m.ss. b.th experim.nts revealed hyperb.lic or hyperb.lic-like force-velocity relations. Interestingly, the analytical m.del not only predicts these extrem. cases, b.t also additionally all contraction states in b.tween. It was possib.e to validate these predictions with the num.rical m.del and the hardware experim.nt. These results prove that the origin of the hyperb.lic force-velocity relation can b. m.chanically explained on a m.croscopic level b. the dynam.cal interaction of three m.chanical elem.nts. The im.lications for the interpretation of b.ological m.scle experim.nts and the realization of m.scle-like b.onic actuators are discussed.

Evidence that nitrogen (N) fertilization tends to accelerate m.turation as well as increase rates of growth has received little attention when diagnosing N deficiencies in corn (Zea m.ys L.).Such a tendency could b. a potential source of errors when the diagnosis is solely b.sed on com.aring plants with different rates of *** N fertilization could accelerate rates of growth and m.turation was tested in a field study with 12 paired plots representing relatively large variab.lity in soil properties and landscape *** plots were located under conditions where preplant N fertilization reduced or avoided tem.orary N shortages for som. plants b.t did not reduce for other plants early in the *** m.asured corn heights to the youngest leaf collar,stages of growth and chlorophyll m.ter readings (Cm.s). The added N advanced growth stages as well as increased corn heights and Cm.s at any given *** effects on corn heights,growth stages and ear weights were statistically significant (Pb.tantial variab.lity associated with *** in growth due to a tem.orary shortage of N within a growth stage m.ght b. partially offset b. longer periods of growth within that stage to physiological *** shortages of N,therefore,m.y produce sym.tom. of N deficiency in situations where sub.equent additions of N should not b. expected to increase *** of these two som.what different effects (i.e.,increase growth rates and advance growth stages) on corn growth could help to define N deficiency m.re precisely and to im.rove the accuracy of diagnosing N status in production agriculture.

Finite elem.nt analysis(FEA) m.thod was em.loyed to perform.three-dim.nsional(3D) electric field sim.lations for gas detectors with m.ltiple wire electrodes.A new elem.nt refinem.nt m.thod developed for use in conjunction with the FEA program.ANSYS allows successful m.shing of the wires without physically inputting the wires in the cham.er geom.try. First, we dem.nstrate a m.del with only one wire, for which we calculate the potential distrib.tions on the central plane and the end-cap region. The results are com.ared to the calculations ob.ained using GARFIELD, a two-dim.nsional program.that uses the nearly exact b.undary elem.nt m.thod. Then we extend the m.thod to sam. m.del, b.t with seven *** results suggest that the new m.thod can b. applied easily to the 3D electric field calculations for com.licated gas detectors with m.ny wires and com.licated geom.try such as m.ltiwire proportional cham.ers and tim. projection cham.ers.
