Effects of exogenous salicylic acid on growth and H_2O_2-metabolizing enzymes in rice seedlings under lead stress

Salicylic acid （SA） was an essential component of the plant resistance to pathogens and also plays an important role in mediating plant response to some abiotic stress. The possible effects of SA on the growth and H2O2-metabolizing enzymes in rice seedlings under lead stress were studied. When rice seedlings grown in nutrient solution containing Pb^2＋（0, 0.05, 0.15, 0.25 mmol/L） for 18 d, the plant biomass as well as the chlorophyll content of leaves decreased with increasing Pb concentration. The pre-treatment with SA （treated with 0.1 mmol/L SA for 48 h before Pb stress） partially protected seedlings from Pb toxicity. The chlorophyll contents were significant higher in leaves of Pb-exposed with SA pre-treatment seedlings than in Pb-exposed plants at the same Pb intensity. SA pre-treated alone could significantly increase the length of shoot and root of seedlings but the vigour difference was not marked under long-term exposure to Pb toxicity. SA pre-treated influence the H2O2 level in leaves of seedlings by up-regulating the activity of superoxide dismutase （SOD）, repressing the activity of catalase （CAT） and ascorbate peroxidase （APX） depending on the concentrations of Pb^2＋ in the growth medium. The results supported the conclusion that SA played a positive role in rice seedlings against Pb toxicity.

Risk Factors of Precancerous Gastric Lesions in A Population at High Risk of Gastric Cancer

Objective： In cancer prevention, the targeting of precancerous lesions has been recognized as the most promising method. However, little attention has been paid to the risk factors of precancerous gastric lesions, especially in rural China where there is high prevalence of precancerous gastric lesions. We therefore conducted a cross-sectional study in liaoning province, China, to investigate the potential risk and protective factors of these precancerous gastric lesions. Methods： A total of 1,179 subjects with high risk of gastric cancer from Zhuanghe County were included in this study. Standard questionnaires were used in collecting epidemiological factors and the data were then analyzed by the unconditional logistic regression model. Results： Smoking and drinking were the risk factors for the precancerous gastric lesions among rural subjects, and the association of smoking or drinking and the precancerous gastric lesions increased in strength with the daily consumption and duration. As the factors such as age, gender, smoking, alcohol were controlled, a multivariable analysis revealed that there was a significant correlation between the deep-fry food intake and the gastric epithelial dysplasia with the odds ratio （OR） of 1.78 [95% confidence interval （CI）： 1.01-3.12]. Garlic eating was shown to confer protection against the development of gastric ulcer （OR=0.55, 95% CI： 0.33-0.92）. Conclusion： Smoking and drinking were the risk factors for the precancerous gastric lesions among rural subjects. Deep-fry food intake might be one of the risk factors for the precancerous gastric lesions and garlic eating was shown to confer protection against the development of gastric ulcer among rural Chinese population.

BACKGROUND In recent years,the incidence of gastrointestinal(GI)cancer in China has increased *** detection and appropriate therapy are considered to be the key to treat GI ***1 takes an active part in the advancement of GI cancer,which will change as the disease *** its expression characteristics in the dynamic variations of GI carcinogenesis are still *** To investigate the expression characteristics of DNMT1 in different GI *** We detected the expression of DNMT1 in 650 cases of different GI diseases by immunohistochemistry,including 90 cases of chronic superficial gastritis(CSG),72 cases of atrophic gastritis with intestinal metaplasia(AG/GIM),54 cases of low-grade intraepithelial neoplasia(GliN),66 cases of high-grade intraepithelial neoplasia(GHIN),71 cases of early gastric cancer(EGC),90 cases of normal intestinal mucosa(NIM),54 cases of intestinal low-grade intraepithelial neoplasia(IliN),71 cases of intestinal high-grade intraepithelial neoplasia(IHIN),and 82 cases of early colorectal cancer(ECRC).RESULTS In the CSG group,all cases showed weakly positive or negative expression of ***,in other four groups(AG/GIM,GliN,GHIN,and EGC),the positive expression rate gradually increased with the severity of the diseases;the negative or weakly positive cases accounted for 55.56%(40/72),38.89%(21/54),1.52%(1/66),and 1.41%(1/71),***,the moderately positive cases were 44.44%(32/72),57.41%(31/54),80.30%(53/66),and 43.66%(31/71),*** strongly positive cases only existed in the GliN(3.70%,2/54),GHIN(18.18%,12/66),and EGC(54.93%,39/71)*** differences between any two groups were statistically significant(PliN,IHIN,and ECRC groups,the rates of cases with weak or negative expression of DNMT1 were 46.30%(25/54

AIM To investigate the interactions of the DNA repair gene excision repair cross complementing group 5(ERCC5) and the metabolic gene glutathione S-transferase pi 1(GSTP1) and their effects on atrophic gastritis(AG) and gastric cancer(GC) *** Seven ERCC5 single nucleotide polymorphisms(SNPs)(rs1047768, rs2094258, rs2228959, rs4150291, rs4150383, rs751402, and rs873601) and GSTP1 SNP rs1695 were detected using the Sequenom MassA RRAY platform in 450 GC patients, 634 AG cases, and 621 healthy control subjects in a Chinese *** Two pairwise combinations(ERCC5 rs2094258 and rs873601 with GSTP1 rs1695) influenced AG risk(P_(interaction) = 0.008 and 0.043, respectively), and the ERCC5 rs2094258-GSTP1 rs1695 SNP pair demonstrated an antagonistic effect, while ERCC5 rs873601-GSTP1 rs1695 showed a synergistic effect on AG risk OR = 0.51 and 1.79, respectively). No pairwise combinations were observed in relation to GC risk. There were no cumulative effects among the pairwise interactions(ERCC5 rs2094258 and rs873601 with GSTP1 rs1695) on AG susceptibility(P_(trend) > 0.05). When the modification effect of Helicobacter pylori(H. pylori) infection was evaluated, the cumulative effect of one of the aforementioned pairwise interactions(ERCC5 rs873601-GSTP1 rs1695) was associated with an increased AG risk in the case of negative H. pylori status(P_(trend)= 0.043).CONCLUSION There is a multifarious interaction between the DNA repair gene ERCC5 SNPs(rs2094258 and rs873601) and the metabolic gene GSTP1 rs1695, which may form the basis for various inter-individual susceptibilities to AG.

The purpose of this study was to explore transrectal ultrasound(TRUS)findings of prostate cancer(PCa)guided by multiparametric magnetic resonance imaging(mpMRI)and to improve the Prostate Imaging Reporting and Data System(PI-RADS)system for avoiding unnecessary mpMRI-guided targeted biopsy(TB).From January 2018 to October 2019,fusion mpMRI and TRUS-guided biopsies were performed in 162 consecutive *** study included 188 suspicious lesions on mpMRI in 156 patients,all of whom underwent mpMRI-TRUS fusion imaging-guided TB and 12-core transperineal systematic biopsy(SB).Univariate analyses were performed to investigate the relationship between TRUS features and ***,logistic regression analysis with generalized estimating equations was performed to determine the independent predictors of PCa and obtain the fitted probability of *** detection rates of PCa based on TB alone,SB alone,and combined SB and TB were 55.9%(105 of 188),52.6%(82 of 156),and 62.8%(98 of 156),*** significant predictors of PCa on TRUS were hypoechogenicity(odds ratio[OR]:9.595,P=0.002),taller-than-wide shape(OR:3.539,P=0.022),asymmetric vascular structures(OR:3.728,P=0.031),close proximity to capsule(OR:3.473,P=0.040),and irregular margins(OR:3.843,P=0.041).We propose subgrouping PI-RADS score 3 into categories 3a,3b,3c,and 3d based on different numbers of TRUS predictors,as the creation of PI-RADS 3a(no suspicious ultrasound features)could avoid 16.7%of mpMRI-guided *** stratification of PCa with mpMRI-TRUS fusion imaging-directed ultrasound features could avoid unnecessary mpMRI-TBs.
