Hydrographic Characteristics and Oceanic Heat Flux in the Upper Arctic Ocean over the Alpha Ridge Observed by the DTOP Platform in 2018 and 2021

In 2018 and 2021,the Drift-Towing Ocean Profilers(DTOP)provided extensive temperature and salinity data on the upper 120m ocean through their drifts over the Alpha Ridge north of the Canada Basin.The thickness and temperature maximum of Alaska Coastal Water(ACW)ranged from 20m to 40m and-1.5℃to-0.8℃,respectively,and the salinity generally maintained from 30.2 to 32.5.Comparison with World Ocean Atlas 2018’s climatology manifested a 40m-thick and warm ACW roughly ex-ceeding the temperature maximum by 0.4–0.5℃in June–August 2021.This anomalously warm ACW was highly related to the ex-pansion of the Beaufort Gyre in the negative Arctic Oscillation phase.During summer,the under-ice oceanic heat flux F_(w)^(OHF)was elevated,with a maximum value of above 25Wm^(-2).F_(w)^(OHF)was typically low in the freezing season,with an average value of 1.2Wm^(-2).The estimates of upward heat flux contributed by ACW to the sea ice bottom F_(w)^(OHF)were in the range of 3–4Wm^(-2)in June–August 2021,when ACW contained a heat content of more than 80MJm^(-2).The heat loss over this period was driven by a weak stratification upon the ACW layer associated with a surface mixed layer(SML)approaching the ACW core.After autumn,F_(w)^(OHF)was reduced(lightly.In addition,the intensive and widespread Ekman suction,which created a violent upwelling north of the Canada Basin,was largely responsible for the substantial cooling and thinning of the ACW layer in the summer of 2021.

Heat Storage Performance of PCM in a Novel Vertical Pointer-Shaped Finned Latent Heat Tank

The heat storage performance of latent heat storage systems is not good due to the poor thermal conductivity of phase change materials.In this paper,a new type of pointer-shaped fins combining rectangular and triangular fins has been employed to numerically simulate the melting process in the heat storage tank,and the fin geometry parameter effects on heat storage performance have been studied.The results indicate that compared with the bare tube and the rectangular finned tank,the melting time of the phase change material in the pointer-shaped finned tank is reduced by 64.2%and 15.1%,respectively.The closer the tip of the triangular fin is to the hot wall,the better the heat transfer efficiency.The optimal height of the triangular fin is about 8 mm.Increasing the number of fins from 4 to 6 and from 6 to 8 reduces the melting time by 16.0%and 16.7%respectively.However,increasing the number of fins from 8 to 10 only reduces the melting time by 8.4%.When the fin dimensionless length is increased from 0.3 to 0.5 and from 0.5 to 0.7,the melting time is shortened by 17.5%and 13.0%.But the melting time is only reduced by 2.9%when the dimensionless fin length is increased from 0.7 to 0.9.For optimising the design of the thermal storage system,the results can provide a reference value.

Data-Driven Direct Adaptive Risk-Sensitive Control of Stochastic Systems

The authors propose a data-driven direct adaptive control law based on the adaptive dynamic programming(ADP) algorithm for continuous-time stochastic linear systems with partially unknown system dynamics and infinite horizon quadratic risk-sensitive indices. The authors use online data of the system to iteratively solve the generalized algebraic Riccati equation(GARE) and to learn the optimal control law directly. For the case with measurable system noises, the authors show that the adaptive control law approximates the optimal control law as time goes on. For the case with unmeasurable system noises, the authors use the least-square solution calculated only from the measurable data instead of the real solution of the regression equation to iteratively solve the GARE. The authors also study the influences of the intensity of the system noises, the intensity of the exploration noises, the initial iterative matrix, and the sampling period on the convergence of the ADP algorithm.Finally, the authors present two numerical simulation examples to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed algorithms.

Pairing nitroxyl radical and phenazine with electron-withdrawing/-donating substituents in “water-in-ionic liquid” for high-voltage aqueous redox flow batteries

Aqueous redox-active organic materials-base electrolytes are sustainable alternatives to vanadium-based electrolyte for redoxﬂow batteries(RFBs)due to the advantages of high ionic conductivity,environmentally benign,safety and low cost.However,the underexplored redox properties of organic materials and the narrow thermodynamic electrolysis window of water(1.23 V)hinder their wide applications.Therefore,seeking suitable organic redox couples and aqueous electrolytes with a high output voltage is highly suggested for advancing the aqueous organic RFBs.In this work,the functionalized phenazine and nitroxyl radical with electron-donating and electron-withdrawing group exhibit redox potential of-0.88 V and 0.78 V vs.Ag,respectively,in“water-in-ionic liquid”supporting electrolytes.Raman spectra reveal that the activity of water is largely suppressed in“water-in-ionic liquid”due to the enhanced hydrogen bond interactions between ionic liquid and water,enabling an electrochemical stability window above 3 V.“Water-in-ionic liquid”supporting electrolytes help to shift redox potential of nitroxyl radical and enable the redox activity of functionalized phenazine.The assembled aqueous RFB allows a theoretical cell voltage of 1.66 V and shows a practical discharge voltage of 1.5 V in the“water-in-ionic liquid”electrolytes.Meanwhile,capacity retention of 99.91%per cycle is achieved over 500 charge/discharge cycles.A power density of 112 mW cm^(-2) is obtained at a current density of 30 mA cm^(-2).This work highlights the importance of rationally combining supporting electrolytes and organic molecules to achieve high-voltage aqueous RFBs.

Adaptive Barrier-Lyapunov-Functions Based Control Scheme of Nonlinear Pure-Feedback Systems with Full State Constraints and Asymptotic Tracking Performance

In this paper,the authors propose an adaptive Barrier-Lyapunov-Functions(BLFs)based control scheme for nonlinear pure-feedback systems with full state constraints.Due to the coexist of the non-affine structure and full state constraints,it is very difficult to construct a desired controller for the considered system.According to the mean value theorem,the authors transform the pure-feedback system into a system with strict-feedback structure,so that the well-known backstepping method can be applied.Then,in the backstepping design process,the BLFs are employed to avoid the violation of the state constraints,and neural networks(NNs)are directly used to online approximate the unknown packaged nonlinear terms.The presented controller ensures that all the signals in the closed-loop system are bounded and the tracking error asymptotically converges to zero.Meanwhile,it is shown that the constraint requirement on the system will not be violated during the operation.Finally,two simulation examples are provided to show the effectiveness of the proposed control scheme.

Bioinspired Stretchable MXene Deformation-Insensitive Hydrogel Temperature Sensors for Plant and Skin Electronics

Temperature sensing is of high value in the wearable healthcare,robotics/prosthesis,and noncontact physiological monitoring.However,the common mechanic deformation,including pressing,bending,and stretching,usually causes undesirable feature size changes to the inner conductive network distribution of temperature sensors,which seriously influences the accuracy.Here,inspired by the transient receptor potential mechanism of biological thermoreceptors that could work precisely under various skin contortions,we propose an MXene/Clay/poly(N-isopropylacrylamide)(PNIPAM)(MCP)hydrogel with high stretchability,spike response,and deformation insensitivity.The dynamic spike response is triggered by the inner conductive network transformation from the 3-dimensional structure to the 2-dimensional surface after water being discharged at the threshold temperature.The water discharge is solely determined by the thermosensitivity of PNIPAM,which is free from mechanical deformation,so the MCP hydrogels can perform precise threshold temperature(32℃)sensing under various deformation conditions,i.e.,pressing and 15%stretching.As a proof of concept,we demonstrated the applications in plant electronics for the real-time surface temperature monitoring and skin electronics for communicating between human and machines.Our research opens venues for the accurate temperature-threshold sensation on the complicated surface and mechanical conditions.

Microstructures and Properties of Biomedical Mg-Zn-Sn-Zr Rolled Alloys

The as-cast Mg-2.0Zn-1.5Sn-xZr(x=0,0.4,0.6,0.8,1.0 wt%)alloy was rolled with the pressure less than 5%each time.The microstructure,mechanical properties,corrosion properties and biocompatibility of the alloy were investigated.The microstructure of the alloy was observed and analyzed by scanning electron microscope,and the tensile test was carried out by universal tensile machine.The corrosion resistance of the alloy in Hank's solution was studied by hydrogen evolution experiment and electrochemical test,and the biocompatibility of the alloy was tested by L929 cells.The results show that Mg-2Zn-1.5Sn-xZr alloy has excellent mechanical properties.The elongation of Mg-2Zn-1.5Sn-xZr alloy decreases with the increase of Zr content,but the tensile strength first increases and then decreases with the increase of Zr concentration.When the Zr content is 0.8 wt%,the maximum tensile strength of the alloy is 235 MPa.The results of hydrogen evolution experiment and electrochemical analysis show that the corrosion resistance of the alloy is the best when the Zr content is 0.8 wt%,and all the five alloys have high biocompatibility.In conclusion,the rolled alloy has good properties and has broad application prospects in the field of biomaterials.

Aqueous Zn-ion batteries(AZIBs)have attracted increasing attention in next-generation energy storage systems due to their high safety and economic.Unfortunately,the side reactions,dendrites and hydrogen evolution effects at the zinc anode interface in aqueous electrolytes seriously hinder the application of aqueous zinc-ion batteries.Here,we report a critical solvation strategy to achieve reversible zinc electrochemistry by introducing a small polar molecule acetonitrile to form a“catcher”to arrest active molecules(bound water molecules).The stable solvation structure of[Zn(H_(2)O)_(6)]^(2+)is capable of maintaining and completely inhibiting free water molecules.When[Zn(H_(2)O)_(6)]^(2+)is partially desolvated in the Helmholtz outer layer,the separated active molecules will be arrested by the“catcher”formed by the strong hydrogen bond N-H bond,ensuring the stable desolvation of Zn^(2+).The Zn||Zn symmetric battery can stably cycle for 2250 h at 1 mAh cm^(-2),Zn||V_(6)O_(13) full battery achieved a capacity retention rate of 99.2%after 10,000 cycles at 10 A g^(-1).This paper proposes a novel critical solvation strategy that paves the route for the construction of high-performance AZIBs.

Mitochondrial energy metabolism in diabetic cardiomyopathy: Physiological adaption, pathogenesis, and therapeutic targets

Diabetic cardiomyopathy is defined as abnormal structure and function of the heart in the setting of diabetes, which could eventually develop heart failure and leads to the death of the patients. Although blood glucose control and medications to heart failure show beneficial effects on this disease, there is currently no specific treatment for diabetic cardiomyopathy. Over the past few decades, the pathophysiology of diabetic cardiomyopathy has been extensively studied, and an increasing number of studies pinpoint that impaired mitochondrial energy metabolism is a key mediator as well as a therapeutic target. In this review, we summarize the latest research in the field of diabetic cardiomyopathy, focusing on mitochondrial damage and adaptation, altered energy substrates, and potential therapeutic targets. A better understanding of the mitochondrial energy metabolism in diabetic cardiomyopathy may help to gain more mechanistic insights and generate more precise mitochondria-oriented therapies to treat this disease.

Electrochemical filtration for drinking water purification:A review on membrane materials,mechanisms and roles

Electrochemical filtration can not only enrich low concentrations of pollutants but also produce reactive oxygen species to interact with toxic pollutants with the assistance of a power supply,making it an effective strategy for drinking water purification.In addition,the application of electrochemical filtration facilitates the reduction of pretreatment procedures and the use of chemicals,which has outstanding potential for maximizing process simplicity and reducing operating costs,enabling the production of safe drinking water in smaller installations.In recent years,the research on electrochemical filtration has gradually increased,but there has been a lack of attention on its application in the removal of low concentrations of pollutants from low conductivity water.In this review,membrane substrates and electrocatalysts used to improve the performance of electrochemical membranes are briefly summarized.Meanwhile,the application prospects of emerging single-atom catalysts in electrochemical filtration are also presented.Thereafter,several electrochemical advanced oxidation processes coupled with membrane filtration are described,and the related working mechanisms and their advantages and shortcomings used in drinking water purification are illustrated.Finally,the roles of electrochemical filtration in drinking water purification are presented,and the main problems and future perspectives of electrochemical filtration in the removal of low concentration pollutants are discussed.
