Advances in Noble Metal-Decorated Metal Oxide Nanomaterials for Chemiresistive Gas Sensors:Overview

Highly sensitive gas sensors with remarkably low detection limits are attractive for diverse practical application fields including real-time environmental monitoring,exhaled breath diagnosis,and food freshness analysis.Among various chemiresistive sensing materials,noble metal-decorated semiconducting metal oxides(SMOs)have currently aroused extensive attention by virtue of the unique electronic and catalytic properties of noble metals.This review highlights the research progress on the designs and applications of different noble metal-decorated SMOs with diverse nanostructures(e.g.,nanoparticles,nanowires,nanorods,nanosheets,nanoflowers,and microspheres)for high-performance gas sensors with higher response,faster response/recovery speed,lower operating temperature,and ultra-low detection limits.The key topics include Pt,Pd,Au,other noble metals(e.g.,Ag,Ru,and Rh.),and bimetals-decorated SMOs containing ZnO,SnO_(2),WO_(3),other SMOs(e.g.,In_(2)O_(3),Fe_(2)O_(3),and CuO),and heterostructured SMOs.In addition to conventional devices,the innovative applications like photo-assisted room temperature gas sensors and mechanically flexible smart wearable devices are also discussed.Moreover,the relevant mechanisms for the sensing performance improvement caused by noble metal decoration,including the electronic sensitization effect and the chemical sensitization effect,have also been summarized in detail.Finally,major challenges and future perspectives towards noble metal-decorated SMOs-based chemiresistive gas sensors are proposed.

Quantum model for understanding protein misfolding behavior——phase diagram and manual intervention

The study of protein folding is fundamental and important in the multidisciplinary field because a diversity of diseases,like Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s are relevant to protein misfolding.The current thermodynamic and geometric approaches only phenomenologically describe but do not provide a mechanistic understanding of the competition between correct folding and misfolding.Here we present a model to understand the misfolding behavior.Considering the influence of dissipative strength for all possible sequences and comparing the folding time toward different compact structures,we obtain a phase diagram of the dissipative quantum phase transition that enables us to model the behavior.We also investigate how a perturbation in the Hamiltonian affects the transition point,which motivates us to explore possible manual interventions.Our results indicate that the manual intervention may be effective for some specific sequence but not for everyone.This approach is expected to lay a foundation for further studies on manual intervention in protein misfolding.

Numerical simulation on recrystallization behavior and microstructure evolution during hot continuous rolling process of 38CrMoAl steel rod

The control of microstructure during hot rolling process of steel is of great importance and will affect the properties of the steel products.According to the production line,a three-dimensional multi-field coupled finite element model of 24-pass continuous hot rolling process of 38CrMoAl steel rod is established using the finite element software MSC.Marc.Based on the recrystallization kinetics model and the grain growth model,a subroutine written in Fortran is introduced to calculate the recrystallization behavior and microstructure evolution of 38CrMoAl steel during the entire rolling process.The distribution and evolution of variables such as strain,temperature and recrystallization fractions during the rolling process are analyzed.The temperature variations and grain sizes at both the center and surface of the tested steel are compared with the experimental results.And it is found that the simulation results are in good agreement with the experimental ones,confirming the reliability of the established model.

Comparison of a minimally invasive osteosynthesis technique with conventional open surgery for transverse patellar fractures

Parpose:The study aims to compare the efficacy and safety of a new minimally invasive osteosynthesis technique with those of conventional open surgery for transverse patellar fractures.Methods:It was a retrospective study.Adult patients with closed transverse patellar fracture were included,and with open comminuted patellar fracture were excluded.These patients were divided into minimally invasive osteosynthesis technique(MIOT)group and open reduction and internal fixation(ORIF)group.Surgical time,frequency of intraoperative fluoroscopy,visual analogue scale score,flexion,extension,Lysholm knee score,infection,malreduction,implant migration and implant irritation in two groups were recorded and compared.Statistical analysis was performed by the SPsS software package(version 19).A plications,such as infection,malreduction,implant migration,and implant irritation,occurred more frequently in the ORIF group.Conclusion:Compared with the ORIF group,the MIOT group reduced postoperative pain and had less complications and better exercise rehabilitation.Although it requires a long operation time,MIOT may be a wise choice for transverse patellar fractures.

Brown planthopper E78 regulates moulting and ovarian development by interacting with E93

The brown planthopper(Nilaparvata lugens) is the main migratory pest in many rice growing areas in Asia. E78 is a member of the nuclear hormone receptor superfamily which plays an important role in egg development and maternal regulation of early embryogenesis. In this study, brown planthopper E78(NlE78) was cloned, and the predicted amino acid sequence showed that it contains two conserved domains: NR-LBD and DBD. qRT-PCR showed that the expression of NlE78 is high in the fifth instar nymphs and the ovaries of females. After downregulation of NlE78, the rate of moulting failure(33.2%) increased significantly, and ovarian development was delayed. However, when NlE78was downregulated together with NlE93, the emergence rate increased significantly(78.79%), and ovarian development was similar to that when NlE78 was downregulated but not delayed. A co-immunoprecipitation experiment showed that NlE78 interacts with NlE93, a crucial downstream transcription factor of the ecdysone signalling pathway. Cellular localization by immunofluorescence revealed that NlE78 and NlE93 are expressed in the nucleus. This study indicates that NlE78 regulates ovarian development and moulting, possibly through its interaction with NlE93. This study is of great significance for the development of new pesticides and control methods based on newly discovered targets.

Bioinformatics Analysis and Identification of Potential Genes Associated with Pathogenesis and Prognosis of Gastric Cancer

Objective Gastric cancer(GC)is a deadly cancer and a challenging public health problem globally.This study aimed to analyze potential genes associated with pathogenesis and prognosis of gastric cancer.Methods This work selected the overlapping differentially expressed genes(DEGs)in GC from four datasets,the GSE29272,GSE29998,GSE54129 and GSE118916 Gene Expression Omnibus databases.These DEGs were used to carry out comprehensive bioinformatic analysis to analyze the related functions and pathways enriched,the relative expression levels and immune infiltrates,the prognostic characteristics and the interaction network.Results In total,55 DEGs increased while 98 decreased in their expression levels.For those DEGs with increased expression,they were mostly concentrated on“focal adhesion”and“ECM-receptor interaction”,whereas DEGs with decreased expression were mostly associated with“gastric acid secretion”and“drug metabolism cytochrome P450”.MCODE and ClueGO results were then integrated to screen 10 hub genes,which were FN1,COL1A1,COL3A1,BGN,TIMP1,COL1A2,LUM,VCAN,COL5A2 and SPP1.Survival analysis revealed that higher expression of the ten hub genes significantly predicted lower overall survival of GC patients.TIMP1 was most significantly related to neutrophils,CD8+T cells,as well as dendritic cells,while LUM was most significantly related to macrophages.Conclusion Immunohistochemistry results and functional testing showed that the expression of COL5A2 was elevated in GC and that it might be a key gene in GC tumorigenesis.

Significantly improved oxidation of bio-based furans into furan carboxylic acids using substrate-adapted whole cells

Furan carboxylic acids are important building blocks in polymer and fine chemical industries. In this work, a simple substrate adaptation strategy was applied to improve the catalytic performances of Comamonas testosteroni SC1588 cells for the synthesis of various furan carboxylic acids. It was found that biocatalytic synthesis of 5-hydroxymethyl-2-furancarboxylic acid(HMFCA) was substantially promoted by adding histidine and increasing cell concentrations. HMFCA was produced in a quantitative yield from200 m M HMF in 24 h. Besides, the HMFCA yields of 71%–81% were achieved with the substrate concentrations up to 250–300 m M. It was firstly found that 4-tert-butylcatechol(TBC), as the stabilizer present in HMF, exerted a significantly detrimental effect on whole-cell catalytic synthesis of HMFCA at high substrate concentrations(more than 130 m M). In addition, a variety of furan carboxylic acids such as2-furoic acid, 5-methyl-2-furancarboxylic acid and 5-methoxymethyl-2-furancarboxylic acid were synthesized with the yields up to 98%.

Characterization and quantitation of aristolochic acid analogs in different parts of Aristolochiae Fructus, using UHPLC-Q/TOF-MS and UHPLC-Qq Q-MS

Aristolochiae Fructus, a Chinese herbal medicine derived from the fruit of Aristolochia contorta Bge., contains nephrotoxic aristolochic acid analogues(AAAs). According to ancient medical texts, various medicinal parts of the fruit of A. contorta were ever used. In order to reveal which part could be safely and effectively used, it is necessary to analyze the chemical profiles of different medicinal parts. Herein we compared the chemical compositions and determined aristolochic acid I(AA-I) and aristolochic acid II(AA-II) in the four parts viz. outer pericarp, inner pericarp, septum, and seed. Ultra-high performance liquid chromatography equipped with quadrupole time-of-flight mass spectrometry(UHPLC-QTOF-MS) was applied for chemical profiling. Ultra-high performance liquid coupled with triple quadrupole mass spectrometry(UHPLC-Qq Q-MS) was employed to quantify AA-I and AA-II in different parts. It was found that the chemical compositions of the four parts varied both qualitatively and quantitatively. A total of 10 AAAs, including 5 aristolochic acids and 5 aristolactams, together with 3 alkaloids, were unambiguously or tentatively identified by UHPLC-QTOF-MS. The quantitatively analytical results obtained by UHPLC-Qq Q-MS showed that AA-I and AA-II exclusively accumulate in the seeds of A. contorta. These findings provide supporting data for the rational selection of medicinal parts.

Observation of the Curative Effect of the Dexamethasone Vitreous Cavity Implant for the Treatment of Irvine-Gass Syndrome

Objective To investigate the clinical efficacy of dexamethasone vitreous cavity implants(Ozurdex)for the treatment of macular edema(Irvine-Gass Syndrome)after cataract surgery.Method Eight patients(eight eyes)with Irvine-Gass syndrome were enrolled for vitreous injections with Ozurdex.The patients included six men(six eyes)and two women(two eyes)with a mean age of 67.12±11.92 years.Changes in the patients best-corrected visual acuity(BCVA),central macular thickness(CMT),and intraocular pressure were compared before and after treatment.Result The mean visual acuity BCVA of the patients was 0.81±0.26 before implantation,which improved to 0.20±0.12,0.13±0.09,and 0.15±0.13 at 2 weeks,1 month,and 3 months after implantation,respectively(P<0.001).The patient’s mean CMT before implantation was 703.00±148.88μm,and it reduced to 258.87±37.40μm,236.25±28.74μm,and 278.00±76.82μm at 2 weeks,1 month,and 3 months after implantation,respectively(P<0.001).Conclusion The dexamethasone vitreous cavity implant(Ozurdex)is a safe and effective treatment,which can effectively improve patient’s visual acuity and reduce macular edema associated with cataract surgery.

Coevolution of global brachiopod palaeobiogeography and tectonopalaeogeography during the Carboniferous

The global brachiopod palaeobiogeography of the Mississippian is divided into three realms, six regions, and eight provinces, while that of the Pennsylvanian is divided into three realms, six regions, and nine provinces. On this basis,we examined coevolutionary relationships between brachiopod palaeobiogeography and tectonopalaeogeography using a comparative approach spanning the Carboniferous. The appearance of the Boreal Realm in the Mississippian was closely related to movements of the northern plates into middle–high latitudes. From the Mississippian to the Pennsylvanian, the palaeobiogeography of Australia transitioned from the Tethys Realm to the Gondwana Realm,which is related to the southward movement of eastern Gondwana from middle to high southern latitudes. The transition of the Yukon–Pechora area from the Tethys Realm to the Boreal Realm was associated with the northward movement of Laurussia, whose northern margin entered middle–high northern latitudes then. The formation of the six palaeobiogeographic regions of Mississippian and Pennsylvanian brachiopods was directly related to "continental barriers", which resulted in the geographical isolation of each region. The barriers resulted from the configurations of Siberia, Gondwana, and Laurussia, which supported the Boreal, Tethys, and Gondwana realms, respectively. During the late Late Devonian–Early Mississippian, the Rheic seaway closed and North America(from Laurussia) joined with South America and Africa(from Gondwana), such that the function of "continental barriers" was strengthened and the differentiation of eastern and western regions of the Tethys Realm became more distinct. In the Barents Ocean tectonic domain during the Pennsylvanian, the brachiopods on the northern margin of the Barents Ocean formed the Verkhoyansk–Taymyr Province, while those on the southern margin formed the Yukon–Pechora Province.
