Objectives: The main objective was to evaluate antibiotic prescribing in the Department of Pediatrics at gabriel Touré teaching hospital. Methods: This was a prospective descriptive study conducted from September 1 to November 31, 2018, in the Department of Pediatrics at gabriel Touré teaching hospital. All children aged 0 to 15 years hospitalized for any pathology during the study period and having received at least one antibiotic had been included. Results: We collected 445 children’s records out of 1032 admissions during the study period, representing a hospital frequency of 43.1%. The sex ratio was 1.3%. The 2 - 5 age group accounted for 48.1%. Fever was the reason for consultation in 45.6% of cases. Patients’ general condition was altered in 60% of cases. The fathers were blue-collar workers in 65.4% and the mothers housewives in 85%, and had no education in 42.9% and 64.5% respectively. Hepatomegaly was present in 18.2%, splenomegaly in 9.6% and peripheral adenopathy in 3.1%. The site of infection was pulmonary in 37.6% and ENT in 9.2%. Bacterial infection was assumed on admission in 54% of cases, and meningitis in 57.7%. The discharge diagnosis was malaria in 54.6%, severe acute malnutrition in 18.6% and meningitis in 6.7%. The death rate was 3.8%. Neutrophilic leukocytosis was present in 47.3% of patients. CRP was positive in 85% of patients. Blood cultures taken in 27.6% of patients were positive in 5. CSF analysis in 30% of patients showed elevated leukocytes in 6.5%. No cultures were positive. Antibiotic prescription was justified by infectious hypotheses in 43.1% of patients. β-lactam antibiotics were prescribed in 98.6%. Antibiotic therapy was not adapted to national/international recommendations in 68.3% of cases, and was not justified in 16.3% of cases on D5 of hospitalization. Introduction: Neonatal mortality remains a major public health concern. According to the World Health Organisation (WHO), the number of newborns dying each year has fallen from 5 million in 1990 to 2.4 million in 2019. The aim of our study was to describe the main morbid conditions and their lethality in newborns admitted to the paediatric ward of the CSREF in Commune V. Methodology: We conducted a 12-month prospective descriptive and analytical study from August 2020 to July 2021. Results: During the 12 months of the study, out of 2654 neonates admitted to hospital, 216 met our inclusion criteria, i.e. 8%. Newborns admitted in the first few hours of life represented 99.54% of cases. Full-term newborns accounted for 65.74% of the total. Forty-eight percent of newborns had hypothermia on admission. The most common diagnosis was asphyxia in 55.56% of cases, followed by neonatal infection in 27.78% and prematurity in 10.65%. Death was recorded in 22.2% of cases. Asphyxia was the main cause of neonatal death, followed by prematurity in our context. Conclusion: Improving the prognosis of newborn babies will require a thorough understanding of neonatal pathologies and the implementation of a pre- and perinatal prevention policy.

A retrospective analysis of carbapenem-resistant Acinetobacter baumannii infections in critically ill patients:Experience at a tertiary-care teaching hospital ICU

Hematological Alterations in an Eastern Sudanese Chronic Kidney Disease Patient Population

Background: Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD), associated with a slow and progressive loss of kidney function over a period of several years, is an important clinical disaster with an increasing rate of morbidity and mortality especially in the least developed countries. many hematological parameters are thought to alter dramatically during the course of the disease. These include white blood cells, red blood cells, and platelets. Methods: We tried, retrospectively, to evaluate the peripheral blood hematological alterations in a group of patients undergoing hemodialysis in an eastern Sudan dialysis center to add local medical information. Results: Anemia (Low hemoglobin and hematocrit) was detected in 94% of the patients’ group. Mean Erythrocyte count (3.32vs.4.76 (×109/L)), Hemoglobin concentration (9.4vs.13 (g/dl)), Hematocrit (28.7vs.38.7 (L/L)) and platelet count (296 vs. 238 (×109/L)) were significantly lower in the patients’ group than in the control group (P-values Conclusion: Five out of eight studied parameters (Red cell count, hemoglobin, hematocrit, mean cell hemoglobin concentration, and platelets count) have shown a significant alteration in CKD patients. As the complete blood count (CBC) test is the most utilized test in clinical laboratory practice, these alterations may be considered as early indicators for CKD. Furthermore, all patients with CKD must be routinely checked for these alterations.

Propane catalytic cracking on pretreated La-ZSM-5 zeolite during calcination for light olefins production

The purpose of this study was to increase light olefins yield and selectivity in catalytic cracking of propane. Pretreatment of ZSM-5 zeolite was performed during calcination. First, lanthanum was loaded on the catalyst by wet impregnation method and then the effect of parameters, such as temperature（400–800 oC）, time（120–480 min） and type of stream, on La-ZSM-5 zeolite was examined during calcination using central composite design（CCD） method. Based on the proposed models, the optimized condition for maximizing selectivity of light olefins for air stream was 680 oC and 310 min and for the nitrogen stream was 735 oC and 173 min that under these conditions, selectivity amount increased 24% for nitrogen stream and 19% for air stream as compared with H-ZSM-5 catalyst. The synthesized catalysts were characterized by X-ray diffraction（XRD） and temperature-programmed desorption（TPD） techniques. According to the results of NH3-TPD, as the temperature increased, the number of strong acid sites（specially Bronsted acid sites） reduced and resulted in increased production of light olefins as well as catalyst stability. Accordingly, stability of the samples calcined with nitrogen stream was higher than the samples calcined with the air stream.

Quantitative Analysis of Faults in Huizhou Sub-basin, Pearl River Mouth Basin

This study used 2D seismic profiles to investigate the Cenozoic evolution of faults in the Huizhou Sub-basin. It aims to define the basin structure style through describing the geometric fea- tures of the faults and quantitatively analyzing their activities. The results indicate that the boundary faults in the Huizhou Sub-basin display en echelon arrangement in plan view, which indicates that, it was caused by a kind of oblique extension. Calculating the fault slips shows long-term activities of faults occurred in the basin, and some boundary faults kept active after 5.5 ma. The evolution history of the fault system is reconstructed. Initially, during the Eocene-Early Oligocene, mainly NNE-NE and NW trending faults and NE striking grabens and half-grabens formed in the basin and a series of faults system controlled the deposition. During the Late Oligocene--Early Miocene, the structural ac- tivities were relatively weak, the fault activity and the fault growth rate decreased sharply. Finally, in the late stage from Late Miocene to the present, the structure movement was re-activated, and some faults were also reactivated. Our study will help better understand the structural features and evolu- tion of the petroleum-bearing basins in the northern margin of the South China Sea.
