To the Editor,Tumor invasion of the inferior vena cava(IVC)through direct erosion is a rare and poor prognostic feature of aggressive hepatic or perihepatic malignancies[1,2].Literature shows poor response to chemotherapy,such that resection often is the only option for improved survival[3].Multidisciplinary collaborations can expand technical options;incorporation of transplant techniques has led to successful R0 resection involving difficult vascular reconstruction and extended resection[4,5].This study describes and analyzes the ten-year collaborative experience of hepatobiliary(HPB)surgeons in management of malignancies involving the perihepatic IVC.

Vitamin C is a popular supplement in exercise and sport for its chemical properties i.e.v antioxidant capabilities. However, no clear role has been established for vitamin C supplementation (VCS) within these areas despite nearly a century’s worth of ongoing research. This study examined peak muscular pushing force (PMF) before and after a VCS intervention, 250 mg every 12 hrs for 28 days, in nine participants whom were naive to VCS and resistance exercise (RE). A dynamometer was used to perform two RE bouts, pre- and post-intervention, that quantified PMF during a state of exercise-induced oxidative stress (EI-OS). Saliva was collected for EIOS analysis from each participant before and after each RE bout;salivary vitamin C (VC) and free salivary malondialdehyde (MDA) were the examined biomarkers. PMF increased significantly post-intervention (405.48 ± 92.75 m·kg·s-2) from baseline (368.31 ± 76.36 m·kg·s-2, p < 0.05). MDA elevated significantly after the pre-intervention RE bout (0.385 ± 0.017 μg/mL) and the post-intervention RE bout (0.373 ± 0.014 μg/mL) compared to the baseline measures (0.373 ± 0.014 μg/mL, 0.359 ± 0.008 μg/mL;p < 0.01);a significant reduction in MDA was observed post-intervention, confirming vitamin C’s ability to reduce oxidative stress (p < 0.05). VC increased post-intervention (1.22 ± 0.73 μg/mL) from baseline (0.47 ± 0.51 μg/mL, p < 0.001). The results from this study suggest VCS is capable of increasing PMF by reducing EIOS in untrained individuals, and can be possibly used for enhancing resistance-exercise performance.

An Extended Genetic Linkage Map for Watermelon Based on a Testcross and a BC<sub>2</sub>F<sub>2</sub>Population

There is limited genetic mapping data useful for breeding programs of watermelon. Introgression lines should be a use-ful tool for genetic studies and genetic enhancement of watermelon cultivars. In this study, we used an advanced re-combinant population (BC2F2) to identify and map chromosomal segments of the wild watermelon Citrullus lanatus var. citroides that were incorporated in the genome of the watermelon cultivar Crimson Sweet (Citrullus lanatus var. lana-tus). An advanced recombinant population (BC2F2) was constructed using a United States Plant Introduction (PI) 494817 (C. lanatus var. citroides) (known to have moderate resistance to bacterial fruit blotch) as a donor parent, and the elite watermelon cultivar Crimson Sweet (C. lanatus var. lanatus) as the recurrent parent. The genetic linkage map consists of 272 markers, including 89 sequence-related amplified polymorphism (SRAP), 72 targeted region amplifica-tion polymorphism (TRAP), and 111 high frequency oligonucleotide-targeting active gene (HFO-TAG) markers. The 272 markers were assembled into 51 linkage groups, covering a total genetic distance of 2162 cM, with an average genetic distance of 7.9 cM between markers. Also, we expended the genetic linkage map for watermelon derived from a testcross population {Griffin 14113 [C. lanatus var. citroide (L.H. Bailey) Mansf.] x watermelon cultivar New Hamp-shire Midget (C. lanatus var. lanatus)} x PI 386015 [C. colocynthis (L.) Schrad.]. The genetic linkage map based on the test cross population consists of 558 markers that cover a genetic distance of 2760.8 cM. This linkage map consists of 41 linkage group, including 10 large linkage groups (ranging from102-240 cM), nine intermediate size linkage groups (ranging from 62-93 cM), and 22 small linkage groups (ranging from 2-56 cM). Mindfulness and Aerobic Exercise as an Intervention for Cognitive Dysfunction Following an Acquired Brain Injury: A Pilot Study

Background: Cognitive impairments as sequelae of brain injury are common and can negatively affect activities of everyday life, participation and quality of life. Thus, finding ways to reduce cognitive impairments and ameliorate their negative impact on everyday life is an important focus of research. Aim: The aim of this pilot study was to analyse the effects of a combination of guided mindfulness and aerobic exercise on cognitive ability and mental fatigue in patients with acquired brain injury (ABI). Design: Pilot study, with a before-after design. Setting: Outpatient. Population: Twenty-one patients suffering from ABI, former patients of three rehabilitation medicine departments. Methods: The intervention comprised a structured combination of guided mindfulness program and outdoor walking, three times/week for 12 weeks. The outcome measures included assessment of information processing speed, working memory, oxygen uptake and self-reported mental fatigue. Results: The main results showed improvements in cognitive abilities related to information processing speed, perceived mental fatigue and physical capacity. Conclusions: A combination of mindfulness and physical activity can increase information processing speed and ameliorate mental fatigue. Further studies are needed to confirm our findings. Clinical Rehabilitation Impact: The combination of guided mindfulness and physical activity shows promise as a treatment modality in rehabilitation of impaired information processing speed and mental fatigue following ABI.

目的:确定脂代谢和固醇调节元件结合蛋白在糖尿病和肥胖相关肾病和足细胞损伤发病机制中的重要作用,为白桦脂醇治疗糖尿病肾病提供理论依据。方法:游离脂肪酸250μm处理分化后的人足细胞48 h,检测足细胞脂滴形成和TLR2/TLR4mRNA和活化的SREBP1以及TLR4的蛋白表达情况以及炎性细胞因子IL-6的mRNA的表达;SREBP1c脂质体转染足细胞,检测足细胞脂滴形成和TLR4和IL-6的表达。结果:游离脂肪酸250μm作用足细胞24 h即诱导人足细胞凋亡,CARS成像显示足细胞脂滴增加,活化的SREBP1的65 kD部分表达增加,TLR2/TLR4的mRNA和TLR4的蛋白表达增加,IL-6的mRNA增加;SREBP1c转染足细胞后,足细胞内脂质合成明显增加,TLR4的蛋白表达上调,IL-6mRNA表达上调。结论:SREBP1表达上调促进足细胞脂质沉积,诱导TLR2/TLR4通路活化,炎性细胞因子IL-6合成增加。SREBP1在2型糖尿病和肥胖肾病足细胞损伤过程中发挥重要作用,为2型糖尿病肾病和肥胖性肾病提供新的治疗靶点。
