Inhibition of 3-hydroxy-3-methyl-glutaryl-coenzyme A reductase enzyme by dipeptides identified in dry-cured ham

High cholesterolemia is a key risk factor for the development of cardiovascular diseases,which are the main cause of mortality in developed *** therapies are focused on the modulation of its biosynthesis through 3-hydroxy-3-methylglutaryl-coenzyme A reductase(HMG-CoAR)*** this sense,food-derived bioactive peptides might act as promising health alternatives through their ability to interact with crucial enzymes involved in metabolic pathways,avoiding the adverse effects of synthetic ***-cured ham has been widely described as an important source of naturally-generated bioactive peptides exerting ACEI-inhibitory activity,antioxidant activity,and anti-inflammatory activity between *** on these findings,the aim of this work was to assess,for the first time,the in vitro inhibitory activity of HMG-CoAR exerted by dipeptides generated during the manufacturing of dry-cured ham,previously described with relevant roles on other *** in vitro inhibitory activity of the dipeptides was assessed by measuring the substrate consumption rate of the 3-hydroxy-3-methylglutaryl CoA reductase in their presence,with the following pertinent *** research was carried out to estimate the possible interactions of the most bioactive dipeptides with the enzyme by performing in silico analysis consisting of molecular docking *** findings showed DA,DD,EE,ES,and LL dipeptides as main HMG-CoAR ***,computational analysis indicated statin-like interactions of the dipeptides with *** study reveals,for the first time,the hypocholesterolemic potential of dry-cured ham-derived dipeptides and,at the same time,converges in the same vein as many reports that experimentally argue the cardiovascular benefits of dry-cured ham consumption due to its bioactive peptide content.

This manuscript is reviewing the presence of substances of safety concern that may be generated in different types of meat *** substances include N-nitrosamines that can be generated under certain conditions when using nitrite as preservative,the polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons generated as a consequence of particular smoking processes,heterocyclic aromatic amines generated under particular cooking conditions,compounds released from the oxidation of lipids and proteins,Maillard reaction products like acrylamide and carboxymethyl lysine,and amines that can be generated and accumulated in fermented *** hazardous compounds,their mechanisms of generation,risks for health and ways of preventing its presence in meat products are briefly described in this review.

Identification of human papillomavirus in esophageal squamous papillomas

AIM： To investigate the presence of human papillomavirus （HPV） in esophageal squamous papilloma （ESP） and determine p16, p53 and Ki67 expression in a Mexican cohort. METHODS： Nineteen cases diagnosed as ESP, corresponding to 18 patients were reviewed; nineteen cases of normal esophageal mucosa were used as negative controls. HPV detection was performed by ,amplified chromogenic in situ hybridization （ACISH） using a wide spectrum-cocktail probe and PCR. RESULTS： The average age at presentation was 46.3 years （range 28-72 years）. Patients included four （22.22%） males and 14 （77.77%） females. The most frequent location was upper third （11 cases）, followed by middle third （3 cases） and unknown site （5 cases）. Immunohistochemistry （IHC） revealed basal and focal p53 expression in 17 cases （89%）; p16 was expressed in eight cases （42.10%） and the Ki67 index ranged from 10% to 30%. HPV was detected in 14 out of 16 cases （87.5%） by ACISH： Twelve showed diffuse nuclear patterns and two showed granular patterns. HPV DNA was identified by PCR in 12 out of 14 cases （85.7%）. Low-risk HPV types were detected in the most of the cases. CONCLUSION： This study provides identification of HPV infection in almost 80% of ESP using either ACISH or PCR; overall, all of these lesions show low expression of cell-cycle markers. We suggest ACISH as an alternative diagnostic tool for HPV detection in ESR .

The Damage Spreading Method in Monte Carlo Simulations:A Brief Overview and Applications to Confined Magnetic Materials

The Damage Spreading(DS)method allows the investigation of the effect caused by tiny perturbations,in the initial conditions of physical systems,on their final stationary or equilibrium *** damage(D(t))is determined during the dynamic evolution of a physical system and measures the time dependence of the difference between a reference(unperturbed)configuration and an initially perturbed *** this paper we first give a brief overview of Monte Carlo simulation results obtained by applying the DS *** model systems under study often exhibit a transition between a state where the damage becomes healed(the frozen phase)and a regime where the damage spreads arriving at a finite(stationary)value(the damaged phase),when a control parameter is finely *** kinds of transitions are actually true irreversible phase transitions themselves,and the issue of their universality class is also ***,the attention is focused on the propagation of damage in magnetic systems placed in confined *** influence of interfaces between magnetic domains of different orientation on the spreading of the perturbation is also discussed,showing that the presence of interfaces enhances the propagation of the ***,the critical transition between propagation and nonpropagation of the damage is *** all cases,the determined critical exponents suggest that the DS transition does not belong to the universality class of Directed Percolation,unlike many other systems exhibiting irreversible phase *** result reflects the dramatic influence of interfaces on the propagation of perturbations in magnetic systems.

This review provides a recompilation of the most important and recent strategies employed to increase the efficiency of metal-organic framework(MOF)-based systems toward the photocatalytic hydrogen evolution(PHE)reaction through specific strategies:tailoring the photocatalytic activity of bare MOFs and guest@MOF composites,formation of heterojunctions based on MOFs and various photocatalysts,and inorganic photocatalysts derived from *** to the data reported in this mini-review,the most effective strategy to improve the PHE of MOFs relies on modifying the linkers with new secondary building units(SBUs).Although several reviews have investigated the photocatalytic activity of MOFs from a general point of view,many of these studies relate this activity to the physicochemical and catalytic properties of ***,they did not consider the interactions between the components of the photocatalytic *** study highlights the effects of strength of the supramolecular interactions on the photocatalytic performance of bare and MOF-based materials during PHE.A thorough review and comparison of the results established that metal-nanoparticle@MOF composites have weak van der Waals forces between components,whereas heterostructures only interact with MOFs at the surface of bare *** material derivatives from MOFs,we found that pyrolysis destroyed some beneficial properties of MOFs for ***,we conclude that adding SBUs to organic linkers is the most efficient strategy to perform the PHE because the SBUs added to the MOFs promote synergy between the two materials through strong coordination bonds.

Dynamic Instability of Straight Bars Subjected to Impulsive Axial Loads Using the DEM

Since the half of the XX century,attention was given to the instability of structures under parametric excitation,especially under periodic *** the other hand,the instability of bars subjected to axial loads of impulsive type has been little studied,in spite of the practical importance of the ***,in Engineering Design it is frequently supposed,without tests or additional verifications,that an axial load of short duration can exceed the Euler critical load of the bar without inducing damage in the *** this context,this paper proposes the use of the truss-like Discrete Element Method(DEM)for determining the dynamic response of elastic straight bars subjected to axial loads defined by pulses of short *** proposed approach allows the consideration of initial imperfections,as well as large displacements and other non-linear *** influence of the pulse duration and other effects in the response of the bar are also ***,the performance of the proposed methodology is verified in static and dynamic instability problems of homogeneous bars without geometrical imperfections,by comparing the DEM results with analytical solutions available in the *** that,the DEM is employed to analyze more complex cases,including bars with initial imperfections and non-homogeneous bars,in which material properties,as Young’s modulus and mass density,are assumed to be correlated Gaussian random *** proposed methodology has proven to be a useful and easy tool for analysis of dynamic instability of bars and could therefore be used by designers for estimating the dynamic buckling load.

Late and very late onset group B Streptococcus sepsis:one and the same?

Background:This study aimed to describe the clinical characteristics of group B Streptococcus(GBS)sepsis in infants aged 4–90 days[late onset(LO)]compared to infants>90 days of age[very late onset(VLO)].Methods:Microbiology records at Children’s Medical Center Dallas were ***,clinical,and outcome data were collected for infants with GBS recovered from blood or cerebrospinal fluid culture from January 1,2006 to July 1,***:Totally 48 infants were identified(42 LO,6 VLO).Infants with VLO sepsis had lower median gestational age(28.5 vs.39 weeks gestation,P<0.001)and longer median nursery admissions(8.8 vs.0.5 weeks,P=0.004).When gestational age was controlled for,there were no differences in clinical presentation,intensive care unit admission,length of stay,neurodevelopmental outcome,and *** with VLO sepsis were more likely to receive vancomycin(83%vs.33%,P=0.02)or third-generation cephalosporins(83%vs.24%,P=0.009),and more likely to continue on those agents even after GBS was ***:Infants with VLO sepsis had lower gestational ages and longer nursery stays than infants with LO *** age at presentation,there were no significant differences in clinical presentations,hospital course,frequency of neurodevelopmental sequelae,and mortality in infants presenting with LO *** GBS *** with VLO sepsis were more likely to receive empiric broad spectrum antimicrobials and more likely to continue receiving broad therapy even following GBS identification.

Effects of cropland abandonment and afforestation on soil redistribution in a small Mediterranean mountain catchment

In slopes of Mediterranean mid-mountain areas,land use and land cover changes linked to the aban-donment of cropland activity affect soil quality and degradation and soil redistribution;however,limited attention has been paid to this issue at catchment *** paper evaluates the effects of cropland abandonment and post-land abandonment management(through natural revegetation and afforesta-tion)on soil redistribution rates using fallout ^(137)Cs measurements in the Araguás catchment(0.45 km^(2),Central Spanish Pyrenees).A total of 52 soil core samples,distributed in a regular grid,from the first 30-40 cm and 9 sectioned reference samples were collected across the catchment and soil properties were *** ^(137)Cs was measured in a 5 cm sectioned references samples and in bulk grid samples.^(137)Cs inventories were used to estimate soil erosion and deposition rates across the *** show that the highest erosion rates were recorded under sparsely vegetated sites in the badland area,while the lowest rates were found in the afforested area,but no significant differences were observed between the different uses and covers in soil redistribution rates likely due to a long history of human intervention through cultivation in steep slopes and afforestation ***,the recovery of the soil organic matter in afforested areas suggest that afforestation can reduce soil degradation at long-term *** information gained achieve a better understanding of soil redistribution dynamics and provide knowledge for effective land management after cropland abandonment of agroecosystems in Mediter-ranean mountain areas.

Knowing the causes of biological invasion success can be relevant to combat future invasive *** recent invasion of the horseshoe whip snake Hemorrhois hippocrepis on the island of Ibiza provides the opportunity to compare natural history traits between invasive and source populations,and to unravel what makes this snake a successful invader that is threatening the only endemic vertebrate of the island,Podarcis *** study compares the basic reproductive traits of mainland native and invasive populations of the *** results revealed that invasive populations were characterized by female maturity at a smaller size,extended reproductive period,and much lower reproduction frequency compared to the native *** contrast,some major reproductive traits--the abdominal fat body cycle,clutch size,hatchling body size,and hatchling body condition,did not differ between the two *** of these results must reflect the environmental differences in the recently invaded island with respect to the source area,and overall plasticity of reproductive *** is evolutionarily interesting,and may aid the succesful growth of this species in their invasiveness of Mediterranean islands like *** most significant finding is that this expression of phenotypic plasticity occurred rapidly in this invasive population,within a period of 14 years *** results on the reproduction ecology of the invasive population were not conclusive regarding the factors determining the invasiveness of the snake and pointed to alternative causes.

The importance of glutathione and phytochelatins on the selenite and arsenate detoxification in Arabidopsis thaliana

We investigated the role of glutathione（GSH） and phytochelatins（PCs） on the detoxification of selenite using Arabidopsis thaliana. The wild-type（WT） of Arabidopsis thaliana and its mutants（glutathione deficient Cad 2–1 and phytochelatins deficient Cad 1–3） were separately exposed to varying concentrations of selenite and arsenate and jointly to both toxicants to determine their sensitivities. The results of the study revealed that, the mutants were about 20-fold more sensitive to arsenate than the WT, an indication that the GSH and PCs affect arsenate detoxification. On the contrary, the WT and both mutants showed a similar level of sensitivity to selenite, an indication that the GSH and PCs do not significantly affect selenite detoxification. However, the WT is about 8 times more sensitive to selenite than to arsenate, and the mutants were more resistant to selenite than arsenate by a factor of 2. This could not be explained by the accumulation of both elements in roots and shoots in exposure experiments. The co-exposure of the WT indicates a synergistic effect with regards to toxicity since selenite did not induce PCs but arsenic and selenium compete in their PC binding as revealed by speciation analysis of the root extracts using HPLC–ICP–MS/ESI–MS. In the absence of PCs an antagonistic effect has been detected which might suggest indirectly that the formation of Se glutathione complex prevent the formation of detrimental selenopeptides. This study, therefore, revealed that PC and GSH have only a subordinate role in the detoxification of selenite.
