Background: Little is known about the rate and reasons for revision after primary Metatarsophalangeal (MTP1) arthrodesis with the latest implants. While it is commonly assumed that nonunion accounts for most reoperations, we hypothesized that malposition is the leading cause of revision. The aim of this study was to determine the rate and reasons for revision after MTP1 arthrodesis using cup- and cone-reamers and the latest locking plate technology. Method: Between 2015 and 2017, 120 consecutive MTP1 fusions in 114 patients were performed with a low profile, pre-contoured titanium dorsal locking plate and a plantar metatarsophalangeal screw. The rate and reasons for revision within a minimum one-year follow-up period (average 16 months [12 - 26]) after index procedures were documented

AIM： To examine the differences in the responses of normal and cirrhotic livers to partial hepatectomy in relation to the factors influencing liver regeneration.METHODS： Cirrhosis was induced in rats by administration of thioacetarnide. Untreated rats were used as controls. The control rats as well as the cirrhotic rats were subjected to 70% partial hepatectorny. At different time points after hepatectorny, the livers were collected and the levels of cytokines, growth factors and cell cycle proteins were analyzed.RESULTS： After hepatectomy, the cirrhotic remnant expressed significantly lower levels of cyclin D1, its kinase partner, cdk4, and cyclin E as compared to the controls up to 72 h post hepatectomy. Significantly lower levels of cyclin A and cdk2 were also observed while the cdk inhibitor, p27 was significantly higher. In addition, the cirrhotic group had lower IL-6 levels than the control group at all time points up to 72 h following resection.CONCLUSION： The data from our study shows that impaired liver regeneration in cirrhotic remnants is associated with low expression of cyclins and cdks. This might be the consequence of the low IL-6 levels in cirrhotic liver remnant which would in turn influence the actions of transcription factors that regulate genes involved in cell proliferation and metabolic homeostasis during the regeneration process.

Malaria is one of the most devastating infectious diseases that caused millions of clinical cases annually despite decades of prevention efforts. Recent cases of Plasmodium falciparum resistance against the only remaining class of effective antimalarial(artemisinin) in South East Asia may soon pose a significant threat. Hence, the identification of new antimalarial compounds with a novel mode of action is necessary to curb this problem. Protein kinase has been implicated as a valid target for drug development in diseases such as cancer and diabetes in humans. A similar approach is now recognized for the treatment of protozoan-related disease including malaria. Few Plasmodium protein kinases that are not only crucial for their survival but also have unique structural features have been identified as a potential target for drug development. In this review, studies on antimalarial drug development exploiting the size of Plasmodium protein kinase ATP gatekeeper over the past 15 years are mainly discussed. The ATP-binding site of Plasmodium protein kinases such as Pf CDPK1, Pf CDPK4, Pf PKG, Pf PK7, and Pf PI4K showed great potential for selective and multi-target inhibitions owing to their smaller or unique ATP-gatekeeper amino acid subunits compared to that of human protein kinase. Hence it is a feasible solution to identify a new class of active antimalarial agents with a novel mode of action and longer clinical life-span.

Interfacial Fracture Toughness Evaluation of Poly(L-lactide acid)/Natural Fiber Composite by Using Double Shear Test Method

In this work, interfacial fracture toughness between treated fiber and matrix was investigated by using double shear test method. Susrface treatment on the oil palm empty fruit bunch (OPEFB) fibers was performed to improve the interfacial bosnding properties of natural fiber reinforced Poly(L-lactide acid) composites. Three fibers model composite and four fibers model composite were prepared for the double shear test. The interfacial fracture toughness of both model composites is dependent on matrix length. In addition, the interfacial fracture toughness and the critical interfacial shear stress were increased with increasing the concentration of NaOH and the duration of surface treatment.

Oil palm fiber (OPF) extracted from empty fruit bunches is proven as a good raw material for bio-composites. The statistical variability in single fiber strength was observed due to the randomly distributed flaws along the fiber. In this study, the effect of gauge length on tensile strength of OPFs has been investigated. The Weibull/ weakest link distribution model was applied to analyse the statistical strength of OPFs. The modified Weibull distribution can predict the gauge length effect more accurately than the conventional Weibull distribution. In addition, the failure strength of the OPF was less sensitive to gauge length compared to coir fiber even though the OPF has a similarity in structures to coir fiber.

Objective:To determine the involvement and the modulatory effects of IL-33 during Plasmodium berghei ANKA(PbA)***:PbA infection in male ICR mice was utilized as a model of *** circulating IL-33 levels were determined in blood plasma by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay(ELISA).After 24 hours post-inoculation of PbA,recombinant IL-33 and ST2,and antibodies against IL-33 and IgG treatments were administered daily for 3 *** expression and localization of IL-33 were assessed in organs generally affected by malaria via ***,histopathological examination was performed to assess the effects of the ***:The levels of systemic IL-33 were elevated at the critical phase of PbA ***,immunohistochemical analysis revealed a significant upregulation of IL-33 expression at the critical phase in the brain,lungs,and spleen of PbA-infected mice as compared to healthy *** with IL-33 protected against experimental cerebral malaria development and reduced pathological features in the brain and lungs of the PbA-infected ***:A potential critical role and involvement of IL-33 in PbA infection may hint at the resolution of immunopathological sequelae associated with malaria.
