The differential genetic signatures related to climatic landscapes for jaguars and pumas on a continental scale

Modern and paleoclimate changes may have altered species dynamics by shifting species’niche suitability over space and time.We analyze whether the current genetic structure and isolation of the two large American felids,jaguar(Panthera onca)and puma(Puma concolor),are mediated by changes in climatic suitability and connection routes over modern and paleoclimatic landscapes.We estimate species distribution under 5 climatic landscapes(modern,Holocene,last maximum glaciations[LMG],average suitability,and climatic instability)and correlate them with individuals’genetic isolation through causal modeling on a resemblance matrix.Both species exhibit genetic isolation patterns correlated with LMG climatic suitability,suggesting that these areas may have worked as“allele refuges.”However,the jaguar showed higher vulnerability to climate changes,responding to modern climatic suitability and connection routes,whereas the puma showed a continuous and gradual transition of genetic variation.Despite differential responsiveness to climate change,both species are subjected to the climatic effects on genetic configuration,which may make them susceptible to future climatic changes,since these are progressing faster and with higher intensity than changes in the paleoclimate.Thus,the effects of climatic changes should be considered in the design of conservation strategies to ensure evolutionary and demographic processes mediated by gene flow for both species.

An illustrated checklist of macrofaunal molluscs from soft-sediments of the Abrolhos Parcel(northeastern,Brazil)with 15 new records

Comprehensive understanding of marine biodiversity is essential for conservation,especially for vulnerable ecosystems.In this paper,we implemented and illustrated a checklist of molluscs from the Abrolhos Parcel,Brazil,the most important coralline area in South Atlantic waters.The list features 100 species belonging to 4 classes and 85 genera,of which 15 are new records for Bahia State,northeast Brazil.The results highlight the potential for new records in the area.The species came from 54 unconsolidated sediment samples collected from the bottom of the reef with a 0.042-m^(2) van Veen grab.Among the listed species,Curveulima sp.,Notarchus sp.and Guyanella clenchi are new records for the South Atlantic,while Caecum metamorphosicum,Eratoidea janeiroensis,Volvarina serrei,Solemya notialis,Solariorbis shimeri,and Amphithalamus glabrus are endemic to Brazilian waters.A comparison of our results with those obtained in other reef environments indicates that the Abrolhos Parcel has a rich malacofauna and suggests that many more species can still be found with more samplings.

Therapeutic Approaches to Post-Mastectomy Pain Syndrome

Background: Breast cancer is increasingly common in society and post-mastectomy pain is a striking condition associated with surgery, both intra and postoperatively. The post-mastectomy syndrome is characterized by the persistence of pain for more than 3 months after the procedure. It is mostly of neuropathic origin and is highly refractory to treatments, which vary from clinical to surgical measures and alternative techniques. In this context, it is essential to understand the possible approaches to these patients. Objective: Understand alternatives for pain management in patients undergoing mastectomy, especially in those in whom pain persists for more than 3 months. Methods: Systematic literature review, conducted in the Virtual Health Library databases includes: Lilacs, SciELO, Medline, PubMed and Cochrane between 2018 and 2023, restricted to articles in English with the descriptors: Mastectomy, chronic Pain, Nerve Blocks and Breast Cancer. 317 articles were found involving the descriptors presented, all in English. After reading the abstracts, 28 articles were selected. Results: This review analyzed 28 scientific studies that rigorously met the previously established characteristics in the sample selection. The synthesis included the following aspects: author/year of publication, article title, objective, type of study and database. Conclusion: It was concluded that, according to the analyzed studies, post-mastectomy pain is a problem that has increased its incidence and that needs the attention of health professionals. The use of antineuropathic medications, nerve blocks, fat grafting, lymph node transplantation, therapy, physical activity and acupuncture are some examples of therapeutic approaches for these women. Therefore, the team must assist the patients, seeking to provide a better prognosis, quality of life and comfort.

Tracheal Intubation Difficulties: Systematic Literature Review

Background: Tracheal intubation is a common procedure in medical practice, being performed mainly in surgical centers and emergencies in trauma patients. Objective: This systematic literature review aims to understand the main difficulties and complications related to tracheal intubation. Methods: Systematic literature review, conducted in the Virtual Health Library databases between 2016 and 2021, restricted to articles in English and Portuguese with the descriptors: Airway, Difficult intubation, and Complications. After reading the abstracts, 34 articles were found, and, after reading them, 9 articles were selected. Results: This review analyzed 9 scientific studies that rigorously met the previously established characteristics in the sample selection. The synthesis included the following aspects (author/year of publication, article title, objective, type of study, and database. Discussion: Several factors that influence the success of intubation were identified, such as technical, professional, and patient issues. In addition, measures to minimize the risks involving the procedure were highlighted. Conclusion: Tracheal intubation is a common procedure in surgical centers and emergencies. However, its risks, while low, should not be ignored. Unsuccessful procedures can occur and have consequences for the patient, such as trauma to the upper airway.

The FAIR principles,an acronym for Findable,Accessible,Interoperable and Reusable,are recognised worldwide as key elements for good practice in all data management processes.To understand how the Brazilian scientific community is adhering to these principles,this article reports Brazilian adherence to the GO FAIR initiative through the creation of the GO FAIR Brazil Office and the manner in which they create their implementation networks.To contextualise this understanding,we provide a brief presentation of open data policies in Brazilian research and government,and finally,we describe a model that has been adopted for the GO FAIR Brazil implementation networks.The Brazilian Institute of Information in Science and Technology is responsible for the GO FAIR Brazil Office,which operates in all fields of knowledge and supports thematic implementation networks.Today,GO FAIR Brazil-Health is the first active implementation network in operation,which works in all health domains,serving as a model for other fields like agriculture,nuclear energy,and digital humanities,which are in the process of adherence negotiation.This report demonstrates the strong interest and effort from the Brazilian scientific communities in implementing the FAIR principles in their research data management practices.

Approach to Pain in Endometriosis Patients: Systematic Literature Review

Background: Endometriosis is a gynecological, multifactorial condition that affects women’s life quality, especially due to the pain inherent to it. Pain is caused by physical and psychological aspects;therefore, several factors must be analyzed, aiming to treat the whole. Conventional, drug or surgical treatments are the most used;however, the search for alternative therapeutic methods is growing. Objective: To analyze the approach to pain in women with endometriosis, seeking a better understanding of the pathophysiological mechanisms of this disease, its impact on life quality, as well as the means of treatments in use and innovations in this field. Methods: Systematic literature review, conducted in the Virtual Health Library databases between 2010 and 2021, restricted to articles in English and Portuguese with the descriptors: Endometriosis, Pain, and Treatment. After reading the abstracts, 197 articles were found, and, after reading them, 59 articles were selected. Results: This review analyzed 59 scientific studies that rigorously met the previously established characteristics in the sample selection. The synthesis included the following aspects: author/year of publication, article title, objective, type of study and database. Related factors such as acute or chronic pain, late diagnosis, discrediting symptomatic complaints and trivialization by health professionals have a profound impact on the physical and mental health of women with endometriosis. On the other hand, there are several classes of drugs, surgical procedures, and alternative therapies available for pain management. Conclusion: Given the context addressed, a certain need is suggested for health professionals to better understand the disease and adopt new behaviors or improve existing ones, such as reception, active listening, early diagnosis and comprehensive and individualized treatment. In addition, further studies are needed regarding alternative therapies, seeking to expand the scientific evidence of their benefits.

Nitric oxide plays a key role in the suppressive activity of tolerogenic dendritic cells

Tolerogenic dendritic cells （DCs） are widely studied for their possible use in the treatment of inflammatory disorders, such as autoimmune diseases. One of the obstacles for the use of this cell-based therapy is the characterization of drugs that are able to modulate DCs. We have previously shown that chloroquine （CQ）, an antimalarial agent, has the ability to modulate DCs towards a tolerogenic phenotype.1 These tolerogenic DCs are able to suppress the development of experimental autoimmune encephalomyelitis （EAE）, a T cell-driven mouse model of human multiple sclerosis. In addition, several studies have proposed that nitric oxide （NO） plays a major role in the dif- ferentiation of regulatory T cells （Tregs） and the suppression of Thl/Th17 cells.2＂3 However, little is known about the role of DC-derived NO in the modulation of inflammatory auto- immune responses. Thus, we aimed to evaluate whether NO plays a role in the tolerogenic activity of CQ-treated DCs （CQ- DCs）. We found that CQ induces DC production of NO and expression of indoleamine 2,3-dioxygenase （IDO）, as well as inducible nitric oxide syrtthase （iNOS）.

Effects of Cryofrequence on Localized Adiposity: Case Study

Cryofrequence is the combination of cryotherapy with radiofrequency, which promotes a “thermal shock” to the tissue, working simultaneously to skin flaccidity and localized adiposity. The efficacy of dermatological and hypodermic cryofrequency treatment was evaluated. This study reports the case of a 45-year-old woman with complaints of flaccidity and fat located in the infra-umbilical region in the preoperative period of abdominoplasty. The evaluation was performed before and after treatment through evaluation protocols, ultrasound examinations and histological findings through optic microscopy, microfocal and immunohistochemical analysis. The treatment was performed in 4 sessions, with a weekly application, using the BHS 156 FULL®—BODY HEALTH BRASIL®apparatus, the parameters were temperature of -10°C, power in 70%, duration of 8 minutes. After the surgical procedure, parts of treated and untreated abdominal tissues were removed for evaluation. In the tests performed, significant destruction of adipocytes was detected, with consequent reduction of fat and greater expression of caspase-3 in the treated tissue, being constated the macrophage increase by CD68 expression. There was improvement in flaccidity, evidenced by the significant increase in the number of fibroblasts and inflammatory cells positive for Ki67, bringing more quantity and better quality to the collagen.

Effect of Corrosion Inhibitor Used in Surface Treatment on the Anticorrosive Performance of an Epoxy Paint System

The mechanism of corrosion is mainly sustained by an electrochemical process, in which anodic and cathodic reactions take place, keeping their kinetics alive by electrons and ions fluxes. Several specific conditions can accelerate corrosion processes. When studying anticorrosive coatings, one of them is the contamination of metallic surface by soluble salts prior to coating, leading to premature failure of the paint system due to corrosion between the metallic surface and the coating. So the surface preparation step prior to coating is a procedure of great importance to the coating anticorrosive performance. The aim of this step is to clean the surface by removing visible and non-visible contaminants. Usually, wet abrasive blasting methods are the most efficient ones to achieve the latter objective, because they may clean the surface, create a surface roughness and also remove the non-visible contaminants, as they use water as a media. On the other hand, evaporation of water after blasting may create flash rust and to avoid this, it is common to use corrosion inhibitors in the water of wet blasting methods. In this paper, the use of sodium tetraborate (borax) as a corrosion inhibitor in wet abrasive blasting is discussed. Electrochemical measurements and mass loss tests show that a borax content of 1% in a saline solution has the best inhibitory action over carbon steel and zinc surfaces, allowing postponing for the painting step some time. However, residual borax left on the surface generated blistering and corrosion under coating, during accelerated corrosion test in a humidity condensation chamber. Electrochemical impedance spectroscopy confirmed that borax accelerated the permeation of water through the coating, downgrading the anticorrosive performance of the paint system.

Functional and Structural Arterial Vessel Features of Female Patients with Stable Dermatomyositis and Antisynthetase Syndrome

Introduction: Dermatomyositis (DM) and antisynthetase syndrome (ASS) show a high frequency of metabolic syndrome, which can be preceded by endothelial dysfunction and arterial stiffness. To date, only one study has evaluated these vessel parameters in DM, and no study of ASS exists. Therefore, the aim of the study was to assess the structural and functional arterial of arterial vessels in DM and ASS. Methods: This cross-sectional study enrolled 21 adult female patients (14 DM and 7 ASS) who were age-, gender- and ethnicity-matched to 12 healthy individuals. Patients using lipid lowering agents or prednisone at doses ≥ 0.25 mg/kg/day, and patients with uncontrolled systemic arterial hypertension, diabetes mellitus, cardiac insufficiency, and disease activity were excluded. Arterial stiffness was evaluated using carotid-femoral pulse wave velocity (PWV), and endothelial function was evaluated using dependent flow-mediated dilatation (FMD) of the brachial artery. Results: The mean age of patients with DM or ASS were 45.4 ± 8.6 and 44.0 ± 6.1 years, respectively (P = 1.000), and patients were predominantly of white ethnicity. Six DM patients and three ASS patients had systemic arterial hypertension, whereas 9 DM patients and six ASS patients had dyslipidemia. Endothelial baseline diameter, hyperemia diameter and FMD values were similar among the three groups (P > 0.05). Moreover, the median FMD values were also similar between the patients with DM and patients with ASS [8.3% (4.5% - 10.9%) vs. 6.0% (−1.8% - 8.2%);P = 0.585]. The PWV values were comparable among the three groups (P = 0.253). In addition, no difference was observed between patients with DM and patients with ASS (7.4 ± 0.8 m/s vs. 7.4 ± 0.9 m/s;P = 1.000). Conclusions: Despite the high prevalence of dyslipidemia and systemic arterial hypertension, our female patients with stable DM and ASS had FMD and PWV values comparable to those of the control group.
