A marine sediment core obtained from a methane seepage site off the northern coast of Irelandwas analysed, at 3 depths, for catabolic genes associated with the aerobic and anaerobic degradation of aromatic compounds. Catabolic gene copy numbers varied through the core peaking at 2.1 meters below sediment surface (mbsf)-just above the sulphate boundary. Beyond the sulphate boundary gene copy numbers fell considerably, suggesting the boundary may be a critical factor in the degradation of aromatic compounds within marine sediments. At the 2.1 mbsf depth our data also suggest that known benzoyl CoA reductase utilizing bacteria are readily detectable.

Traditionally Nocardia asteroids was considered the predominant species of causing no-cardiosis. The improved identification of isolates using molecular techniques have shown that the genus exhibits considerable taxonomic complexity and phenotypic base identification can be ambiguous. The aim of this study was to assess the species distribution of Nocardia strains mostly recovered from patients suspected of having tuberculosis, during three years period (2009-2012). The clinical isolates were identified to species level using conventional tests and genotypic methods using single and multi locus sequence analysis (MLsA) of 16s rRNA, gyrB and secA1 genes. Nocardiosis was diagnosed in 46 patients. The most frequent underlying condition were organ transplantation (6 patients;13%), cancer (6 patients;13%), human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) (6 patients;13%), non-infectious chronic lung disease (5 patients;10.8%) and tuberculosis (4 patients;8.7%). Nocardia species was recovered from 46 different clinical specimens, the most common of which was bronchoalveolar lavage (BAL) (43.5%). Eleven different Nocardia species were identified: N. asteroides (n = 12), N. cyriacigeorgica (n = 9), N. farcinica (n = 7), N. wallacei (n = 6), N. carnea (n = 3), N. otitidiscaviarum (n = 3), N. abscessus (n = 1), N. arthritidis (n = 1), N. kruczakiae (n = 1), N. nova (n = 2) and N. veterana (n = 1). In conclusion, infection caused by Nocardia species appears to be more common than generally appreciated. The current study provides further evidence that Nocardia species are capable of causing a wide range of human diseases in healthy and immunocompromised patients. MLsA is a reliable method for accurate species identification of Nocardia isolates and would be more feasible for routine use in clinical laboratories.

拉普捷夫海对于研究大陆初始张裂的过程具有重要意义。它位于加克尔扩张脊南端，这样的构造位置特征是大陆边缘／扩张脊汇聚的结果导致的。现今对拉普捷夫海陆架地质的理解是基于俄罗斯多道地震反射数据和陆地地质学的推断。地质与板块运动学数据常用来约束对地震反射数据的解释。拉普捷夫海裂谷体系由几个深下切裂谷和基底的高位区块组成。自西向东分别是：西拉普捷夫海和南拉普捷夫海裂谷盆地、Ust’Lena裂谷、东拉普捷夫海和斯托尔博沃伊地垒、Bel’kov-svyatoi Nos和Anisin裂谷。陆架的中部和东部其重力场具有很大的差异，从裂谷上的60mGal到地垒上的50mGal。拉普捷夫海裂谷包含五个地震层序单元，它们以清晰的区域反射面为界，在它们下面为非均质的褶皱基底。这些层序单元的年龄为晚自垩世至全新世，反映了扩张脊／大陆边缘相互作用的不同阶段。与裂谷相关的沉积物总厚度估计在4km和8—10km之间，而在隆起之上的沉积盖层的厚度明显要薄些，一般不超过1～2km。从南拉普捷夫海盆约10km处到Bel’kov-svyatoi Nos裂谷的4～5km处，沉积区总厚度呈向东减小的趋势，整个裂谷构造的单一性可能表明同一个方向上裂谷的再次发育。整个裂谷系统被最上部的地震单元覆盖，这可能反映出自约2Ma年来北美／欧亚板块最后一次重组期间裂谷作用开始减速。

Quantum supercurrent Transistors in silicon Quantum Wells Confined by superconductor Barriers

We present the findings of spin-dependent single-hole and pair-hole transport in plane and across the p-type high mobility silicon quantum wells (si-QW), 2 nm, confined by the superconductor δ-barriers on the n-type si (100) surface. The oscillations of the conductance in normal state and the zero-resistance supercurrent in superconductor state as a function of the top gate voltage are found to be correlated by on- and off-resonance tuning the two-dimensional levels of holes in si-QW with the Fermi energy in the superconductor δ-barriers. The sIMs and sTM studies have shown that the δ-barriers heavily doped with boron, 5 × 1021 cm–3, represent really alternating arrays of silicon empty and doped dots, with dimensions restricted to 2 nm. This concentration of boron seems to indicate that each doped dot located between empty dots contains two impurity atoms of boron. The EPR studies show that these boron pairs are the trigonal dipole centres, B+ - B–, that contain the pairs of holes, which result from the negative -U reconstruction of the shallow boron acceptors, 2B0 => B+ - B–. The electrical resistivity, magnetic susceptibility and specific heat measurements demonstrate that the high density of holes in the si-QW (> 1011 cm–2) gives rise to the high temperature superconductor properties for the δ-barriers. The value of the superconductor energy gap obtained is in a good agreement with the data derived from the oscillations of the conductance in normal state and of the zero-resistance supercurrent in superconductor state as a function of the bias voltage. These oscillations appear to be correlated by on- and off-resonance tuning the two-dimensional subbands of holes with the Fermi energy in the superconductor δ-barriers. Finally, the proximity effect in the s-si-QW-s structure is revealed by the findings of the quantization of the supercurrent and the multiple Andreev reflection (MAR) observed both across and along the si-QW plane thereby identifying the spin transis
