Parallel LDPC Decoding on GPUs Using a Stream-Based Computing Approach

Low-Density Parity-Check （LDPC） codes are powerful error correcting codes adopted by recent communication standards. LDPC decoders are based on belief propagation algorithms, which make use of a Tanner graph and very intensive message-passing computation, and usually require hardware-based dedicated solutions. With the exponential increase of the computational power of commodity graphics processing units （GPUs）, new opportunities have arisen to develop general purpose processing on GPUs. This paper proposes the use of GPUs for implementing flexible and programmable LDPC decoders. A new stream-based approach is proposed, based on compact data structures to represent the Tanner graph. It is shown that such a challenging application for stream-based computing, because of irregular memory access patterns, memory bandwidth and recursive flow control constraints, can be efficiently implemented on GPUs. The proposal was experimentally evaluated by programming LDPC decoders on GPUs using the Caravela platform, a generic interface tool for managing the kernels＇ execution regardless of the GPU manufacturer and operating system. Moreover, to relatively assess the obtained results, we have also implemented LDPC decoders on general purpose processors with Streaming Single Instruction Multiple Data （SIMD） Extensions. Experimental results show that the solution proposed here efficiently decodes several codewords simultaneously, reducing the processing time by one order of magnitude.

Symplectic orbit propagation based on Deprit’s radial intermediary

The constantly challenging requirements for orbit prediction have opened the need for better onboard propagation ***-Kutta(RK)integrators have been widely used for this purpose;however RK integrators are not symplectic,which means that RK integrators may lead to incorrect global behavior and degraded *** from Deprit’s radial intermediary,obtained by the elimination of the parallax transformation,we present the development of symplectic integrators of different orders for spacecraft orbit *** a set of numerical simulations,it is shown that these integrators are more accurate and substantially faster than Runge-Kutta-based ***,it is also shown that the proposed integrators are more accurate than analytic propagation algorithms based on Deprit’s radial intermediary solution,and even other previously-developed symplectic integrators.

Algae(and their extracts)are increasingly important for pharmaceutical applications due to the diversity of useful compounds they *** genus Fucus contains one of the most studied species,Fucus *** species *** differs from the others of the genus by presenting longitudinal air-vesicles and a capacity to survive at low *** is an alga that inhabits the Mondego River estuary(Portugal),at the southern limit of its distribution,and can serve as a role model to understand the effect of a salt gradient on the production of bioactive *** assessed the phenolic content and antioxidant activity of different *** extracts(***,aqueous and polysaccharide)prepared from samples harvested from two different zones to evaluate if the adaptation of *** to different salinity levels influenced its chemical *** antioxidant activity of the extracts was determined using 1,2-diphenyl-picrylhydrazyl(DPPH)and 2.2-azino-bis(3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6-sulfonic acid)(ABTS)*** assays demonstrated that the methanolic extract of lyophilized *** that grew at low salinities was the most bioactive,***(IC 50=50.39μg/mL)and ABTS(TEAC=2.42).The total phenolic content(Folin-Ciocalteu method)and the methanolic extract of the lyophilized *** collected from a low salinity habitat exhibited the highest phenolic content(PGE=49.48μg/mg of lyophilized extract)amongst those *** layer chromatography(TLC)and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy(FTIR)were used for the identification of compounds in the *** characterization allowed confirmation that the various extracts contained almost the same compounds but with notable quantitative *** on these results,we conclude that there were differences in the quantity of the compounds due to the effect of *** drying methods used were also found to have influenced the quality of the extracted compounds.

Over the past century or more,traditional uses of seaweeds began and initially comprised the simple collection,sorting and drying of seaweeds harvested from the wild,or cast upon the beach,for use as soil“manure/fertilizer/improver”.Some macroalgae were used for unprocessed food purposes and subsequently harvested and cultivated biomasses of selected brown and red seaweeds becameindustrially processed to yield alginates,mannitol,iodine,agar,agarose,carrageenan,and more recently biostimulants,*** from various seaweeds are very diverse and are commonly applied in a range that includes textiles and dying,food/feed and supplements and specialized medical applications.

Studies have shown that dysregulated expression of miRNAs is a major underlying event in the onset and progression of many metabolic *** pathological role of miR-548c-3p in various cancer types,including breast cancer,glioma,prostate cancer,and gastric cancer,has been documented.1 However,experimental evidences validating the role of miR-548c-3p in the development of metabolic diseases are still lacking,and no data is available on its diagnostic potential for metabolic syndrome(MS).Recently,we predicted the involvement of miR-548c-3p in the pathogenesis of MS and its progression to cardiovascular diseases(CVD)via the regulation of target genes necessary for the proper function of insulin resistance,mTOR,and JAK/STAT signaling pathways.2 Therefore,we deemed it necessary to engage in wet laboratory analysis and validate these claims in patients with metabolic syndrome compared to healthy individuals.

Bifurcaria bifurcata is a seaweed of the Order Fucales(Ochrophyta,Phaeophyceae)that can be found all year round along the Portuguese Atlantic *** it is considered edible in some countries,its biotechnological potential has not yet been assessed in detail and here we report its antimicrobial potential against human dermatophyte *** samples were harvested from Baleal Island(Peniche,Portugal)harvested in winter(BbPe);from Aguda Beach(Arcozelo,Vila Nova de Gaia,Portugal),harvested in autumn(BbAg)and a sample obtained by culturing the Aguda sample under laboratory conditions(BbLC).A broth macrodilution assay was applied to determine the MIC(minimum inhibitory concentration)and MLC(minimum lethal concentration)of the *** *** show that the BbPe MeOH extracts were the most effective and had higher antifungal activity against all the tested dermatophyte strains than the BbLC and BaAg extracts[Epidermophyton floccosum FF9(100–200μg/mL MIC;200μg/mL MLC),Microsporum canis FF1(400μg/mL MIC;≥400μg/mL MLC),Trichophyton mentagrophytes FF7(100μg/mL MIC;>800μg/mL MLC),*** CECT 2908(800μg/mL MIC;≥800μg/mL MLC),*** *** CECT 2958(800μg/mL MIC;≥800μg/mL MLC),*** CECT 2794(200μg/mL MIC;≥400μg/mL MLC)].In fact,only *** FF9 was sensitive to BbAg and BbLC MeOH *** our knowledge,this is the first report of antifungal activity of *** against human dermatophyte fungi.
