AIM To evaluate the sex-specific effects of a hydroalcoholic extract from Eugenia punicifolia(HEEP) leaves on gastric ulcer *** In this rat study involving males, intact(cycling) females, and ovariectomized females, gastric ulcers were induced using acetic acid. A vehicle, lansoprazole, or HEEP was administered for 14 d after ulcer induction. Body weight was monitored throughout the treatment period. At the end of treatment, the rats were euthanized and the following in vivo and in vitro investigations were performed: macroscopic examination of the lesion area and organ weights, biochemical analysis, zymography, and evaluation of protein expression levels. Additionally, the concentration-dependent effect of HEEP was evaluated in terms of subacute toxicity and *** Compared to the vehicle, HEEP demonstrated a great healing capacity by substantially reducing the ulcerative lesion area in males(52.44%), intact females(85.22%), and ovariectomized females(65.47%), confirming that HEEP accelerates the healing of acetic acidinduced gastric lesions and suggesting that this effect is modulated by female sex hormones. The antiulcer effect of HEEP was mediated by prostaglandin E2 only in male rats. Overall, the beneficial effect of HEEP was the highest in intact females. Notably, HEEP promoted the expression of vascular endothelial growth factor(intact vs ovariectomized females) and decreased the expression of Caspase-8 and Bcl-2(intact female vs male or ovariectomized female). Additionally, HEEP enhanced fibroblast proliferation and migration into a wounded area in vitro, confirming its healing effect. This study evaluated the effects of freeze-dried red beet(Beta vulgaris L.)root(FDBR)and stem/leaves(FDBSL)on the growth and metabolic activities of the probiotics Lactobacillus acidophilus La-05,Lacticaseibacillus casei 26,and Lismosilactobacillus fermentum 296,as well as on their survival and physiological states when exposed to simulated gastrointestinal conditions(SGIC).The changes in the contents of phenolic compounds and antioxidant activity of FDBR and FDBSL when exposed to SGIC were also *** and FDBSL had high contents of soluble(5.25 and 11.10 g/100 g)and insoluble fiber(21.43 and 37.03 g/100 g),pectins(8.45 and 9.51 g/100 g),betalains(3.36-28.99 g/100 g),and a variety of phenolic *** and FDBSL stimulated the growth of the probiotic strains with high viable counts(>9 log CFU/mL),the production of acetic,butyric,lactic,and propionic acids,and alterations in the contents of phenolic compounds during 72 h of *** and FDBSL had positive prebiotic activity scores on the tested probiotics(≥0.17)linked to selective stimulatory *** and FDBSL increased the survival and maintenance of active physiological functions in the probiotic during exposure to *** contents of phenolic compounds and the antioxidant activity of FDBR and FDBSL increased after exposure to the stomach conditions,while the antioxidant activity decreased after exposure to intestine *** stimulatory and protective effects of FDBR and FDBSL on probiotic strains could be associated with their dietary fiber and phenolic compound contents,which could be exploited in the formulation of functional foods or dietary supplements.

Failure Evaluation of Reinforced Concrete Beams Using Damage Mechanics and Classical Laminate Theory

The prediction of the behavior of reinforced concrete beams under bending is essential for the perfect design of these ***,the classical models do not incorporate the physical nonlinear behavior of concrete under tension and compression,which can underestimate the deformations in the structural element under short and long-term *** the present work,a variational formulation based on the Finite Element Method is presented to predict the flexural behavior of reinforced concrete *** physical nonlinearity due cracking of concrete is considered by utilization of damage concept in the definition of constitutive models,and the lamination theory it is used in discretization of section cross of *** the layered approach,the reinforced concrete element is formulated as a laminated composite that consists of thin layers,of concrete or steel that has been modeled as elastic-perfectly plastic *** comparison of numerical load-displacement results with experimental results found in the literature demonstrates a good approximation of the model and validates the application of the damage model in the Classical Laminate Theory to predict mechanical failure of reinforced concrete *** results obtained by the numerical model indicated a variation in the stress-strain behavior of each beam,while for under-reinforced beams,the compressive stresses did not reach the peak stress but the stress-strain behavior was observed in the nonlinear regime at failure,for the other beams,the concrete had reached its ultimate strain,and the beam’s neutral axis was close to the centroid of the cross-section.

Morphological Characterization of Mango （Mangifera indica） Accessions Based on Brazilian Adapted Descriptors

The aim of this study was to characterize 103 mango accessions of the field germplasm collection of Embrapa semi-arid region, located in Juazeiro, Bahia, Brazil and to apply 50 morphological descriptors established by the Brazilian Ministry of Agriculture, livestock and supply to help in the development of new mango cultivars for the Northeastern region of Brazil. Four trees were selected for each accession and eight adult leaves, eight flowers and 16 fruits were collected from each tree. Morphological characteristics ranging from plant size to seed embryo were evaluated. Simple percentages were estimated for all the descriptors. Only the descriptors for leaf symmetry and fruit waxiness did not show variability among the accessions. Eight accessions did not show fruits with fibers, while nine other accessions presented flesh firmness, which is an important characteristic to improve breeding. The soluble solids content was high, above 14 ~Brix for 95% of the accessions with Tommy Atkins showing the lowest value, 12.5 ~Brix. A great diversity was found in the color of the epidermis ranging from green to red. The accessions Amrapali and Salitre presented a dark orange flesh color. The obtained data set, are the most comprehensive so far in Brazil, it allows choosing the best parents to develop new cultivars and will also contribute to the protection of mango cultivars in Brazil.

Dynamics in the emergence of dormant and non-dormant herbaceous species from the soil seed bank from a Brazilian dry forest

Endoscopic papillectomy: The limits of the indication, technique and results

In the majority of cases, duodenal papillary tumors are adenomas or adenocarcinomas, but the endoscopy biopsy shows low accuracy to make the correct differentiation. Endoscopic ultrasonography and endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography are important tools for the diagnosis, staging and management of ampullary lesions. Although the endoscopic papillectomy(EP) represent higher risk endoscopic interventions, it has successfully replaced surgical treatment for benign or malignant papillary tumors. The authors review the epidemiology and discuss the current evidence for the use of endoscopic procedures for resection, the selection of the patient and the preventive maneuvers that can minimize the probability of persistent or recurrent lesions and to avoid complications after the procedure. The accurate staging of ampullary tumors is important for selecting patients to EP or surgical treatment. Compared to surgery, EP is associated with lower morbidity and mortality, and seems to be a preferable modality of treatment for small benign ampullary tumors with no intraductal extension. The EP procedure, when performed by an experienced endoscopist, leads to successful eradication in up to 85% of patients with ampullary adenomas. EP is a safe and effective therapy and should be established as the first-line therapy for ampullary adenomas.

Evaluation of the genotoxic and cytotoxic potentials is a part of the analysis process where plant products with therapeutic properties must be submitted for being safely employed, mainly through long time points, doannesia princeps, also known as ＂cotieira＂ has been used on popular medicine as laxative and several diseases treatment. Aiming to analyze genotoxic potential ofd. princeps leaves extract, Allium cepa assay and micronucleus test were employed. No genotoxic activity presented J. princeps leaves extract; however, extracts cytotoxic activity over A. cepa meristematic cells and mice marrow cells was observed. J. princeps leaves extract presented antiproliferative activity at concentrations and systems employed indicating their therapeutic potential for cellular cycle inhibition. Moreover, results showed that in regard to its mutagenic effect, usage of J. princeps leaves tea on popular medicine has been a safe procedure, as well.
