The present study investigated for the first time some physical quality attributes of unripe Citrus x myrtifolia Rafinesque which is the ingredient of the popular soft drink Chinotto. Samples for analysis were processed to better reproduce the crude materials used for industrial chinotto extract, discarding part of the juice. Fruit bioactive compounds such as ascorbic acid, carotenoids, chlorophylls, flavonoids and antioxidant capacity were estimated. An important nutritional aspect arose from the data presented was the high concentration of flavonoids (780 mg/100 g FW) and vitamin C (42 mg/100 g FW). A good antioxidant capacity (5872 μm Trolox equivalents/100 g FW) was estimated by oxygen radical absorbing capacity (ORAC). This matrix could be considered as a good nutraceutical source, giving new opportunity to citrus industry.

Based on reports that variables related to photosynthesis(net assimilatory ratio and chloroplast pigments)are more plastic than the morphological and biochemical variables in a climax tropical species,Cariniana estrellensis,under contrasting irradiance,we hypothesised that plasticity of gas exchange variables is higher in relation to growth,biochemical and anatomical *** that were 14 months old were subjected to200 up to 2000 lmol m^(-2)s^(-1) of photo synthetically active radiation(PAR)for 140 *** increased up to1400 lmol m^(-2)s^(-1)PAR and then decreased at 2000 lmol m^(-2)s^(-1) PAR(full sunlight).This was related to the rate of photosynthesis(A)which showed the same tendency as photosystem Ⅱ performance index(PI_(ABS)).The greater thickness of the secondary xylem.a. 1400 lmol m^(-2)s^(-1) PAR indicated a higher water conductance *** decrease in specific leaf area,elongation of mesophyll cells,and increase in stomatal density observed at higher irradiances were associated with higher leaf fructose and sucrose *** concluded that the better growth in partial shade was due to higher photosynthetic *** the other hand,photosynthesis was inhibited equally in full sun and deep *** high adjustment capacity of *** to wide amplitudes of irradiance was provided by greater plasticity of gas exchange variables in relation to growth,anatomical,and biochemical variables.

Background: The aim of this study was to identify the prevalence of tinnitus in a sample of people with early stages of ménière’s disease. material and methods: A postal survey was sent to 256 patients all judged to fulfil the criteria of early unilateral ménière’s disease established by the American Academy of Otolaryngology Committee on Hearing and Equilibrium. Of these 256 patients, 136 had probable ménière’s disease and 120 had early possible ménière’s disease. The same questionnaire was mailed and administered to 60 control subjects with no history of vestibular dysfunction. A total of 158 subjects completed the questionnaire. Results: Tinnitus was found in 54 (63%) of the 72 members of the final unilateral vestibular ménière’s disease group and 61 (85 %) of the 72 members of the final unilateral probable ménière’s disease group. Conclusion: The prevalence of tinnitus as determined by a questionnaire survey was significantly greater in patients with probable ménière’s disease than in patients with early vestibular ménière’s disease or in control subjects. However, the prevalence of tinnitus as determined by a questionnaire survey was significantly greater in patients with early vestibular ménière’s disease than in control subjects.

Breast cancer is the predominant form of carcinoma among women worldwide,with 70%of advanced patients developing bone metastases,with a high mortality *** this sense,the bone marrow(Bm)mesenchymal stem/stromal cells(mSCs)are critical for Bm/bone homeostasis,and failures in their functionality,transform the Bm into a premetastatic niche(PmN).We previously found that Bm-mSCs from.a.vanced breast cancer patients(BCPs,infiltrative ductal carcinoma,stage III-B)have an abnormal *** work aims to study some of the metabolic and molecular mechanisms underlying mSCs shift from.a.normal to an abnormal profile in this group of patients.A com.a.ative analysis was undertaken,which included self-renewal capacity,morphology,proliferation capacity,cell cycle,reactive oxygen species(ROS)levels,and senescence-associatedβ‑galactosidase(SA‑β‑gal)staining of Bmderived mSCs isolated from 14 BCPs and 9 healthy volunteers(HVs).Additionally,the expression and activity of the telomerase subunit TERT,as well as telomere length,were *** levels of pluripotency,osteogenic,and osteoclastogenic genes(OCT-4,SOX-2,m-CAm,RUNX-2,BmP-2,CCL-2,m-CSF,and IL-6)were also *** results showed that mSCs from BCPs had reduced,self-renewal and proliferation *** cells also exhibited inhibited cell cycle progression and phenotypic changes,such as an enlarged and flattened ***,there was an increase in ROS and senescence levels and a decrease in the functional capacity of TERT to preserve telomere *** also found an increase in pro-inflam.a.ory/pro-osteoclastogenic gene expression and a decrease in pluripotency gene *** conclude that these changes could be responsible for the abnormal functional profile that mSCs show in this group of patients.

AIm: To investigate the prognostic significance of insulin-like growth factor-binding protein 3(IGFBP-3) in patients with ***: Prospective study that included two cohorts: outpatients with stable cirrhosis(n = 138) and patients hospitalized for acute decompensation(n = 189). Development of complications, mortality or liver transplantation was assessed by periodical phone calls and during outpatient visits. The cohort of stable cirrhosis also underwent clinical and laboratory evaluation yearly(2013 and 2014) in predefined study visits. In patients with stable cirrhosis, IGFBP-3 levels were m.a.ured at baseline(2012) and at second re-evaluation(2014). In hospitalized subjects, IGFBP-3 levels were m.a.ured in serum samples collected in the first and in the third day after admission and stored at-80 ℃. IGFBP-3 levels were m.a.ured by ***: IGFBP-3 levels were lower in hospitalized patients as com.a.ed to outpatients(0.94 mcg/mL vs 1.69 mcg/m L, P mcg/m L vs 1.33 mcg/mL, P = 0.008). During the follow-up of the stable cohort, 17 patients died and 11 received liver transplantation. Bivariate analysis showed that death or transplant was associated with lower IGFBP-3 levels(1.44 mcg/mL vs 1.74 mcg/m L, P = 0.027). The Kaplan-meier transplant-free survival probability was 88.6% in patients with IGFBP-3 ≥ 1.67 mcg/mL and 72.1% for those with IGFBP3 mcg/mL(P = 0.015). In the hospitalized cohort, 30-d mortality was 24.3% and was independently associated with creatinine, INR, SpO_2/FiO_2 ratio and IGFBP-3 levels in the logistic regression. The 90-d transplant-free survival probability was 80.4% in patients with IGFBP-3 ≥ 0.86 mcg/mL and 56.1% for those with IGFBP3 mcg/mL(P mes in patients with cirrhosis, and might represent a promising prognostic tool that can be incorporated in clinical practice.

BACKGROUND Solitary fibrous tumor of the liver (SFTL) is a rare occurrence with a low number of cases reported in literature. SFTL is usually benign but, 10%-20% cases are reported to be malignant with a tendency to metastasize. The majority of malignant SFTL cases are associated with a paraneoplastic hypoglycaem.a.defined as Doege-Potter syndrome. Surgery is the best therapeutic treatment, however, long- life follow-up is recommended. CASE SUm.a.Y A 74-year-old man, was admitted to the emergency department after a syncopal episode with detection of hypoglycaem.a.resistant to medical treatment. The computed tomography revealed a solid mass m.a.uring 15 cm of the left liver. An open left hepatectomy was performed with complete resection of tumor. Histopathological analyses confirmed a malignant SFTL. CONCLUSION Large series with long-term follow-up have not been published neither have clinical trials been undertaken. Consequently, the methodical long-term followup of surgically treated SFTLs is strongly recommended.

many environmental stress factors have been identified to increase square and boll abscission and thus result in reduced cotton yield. Under stress conditions, ethylene is elicited. Ethylene peaks before abscission to promote the formation of the abscission layer and plays a major role in early season square and boll abortion in cotton (Gossypium hirsutum L.). In addition, ethylene stimulates the leaf senescence process. Thus, it is desirable to protect plants from ethylene-induced fruit loss and premature leaf senescence under stress conditions. The objective of this study was to evaluate the ability of 1-methylcyclopropene (1-mCP) to protect cotton plants against abiotic stress caused by ethephon (ethylene promoting effect). Field studies using a randomized complete block design with four replications were conducted in 2010 and 2011 at Texas A&m.a.riLIFE Research Farm in Burleson County, TX. Eight treatments that consisted of two 1-mCP rates (0 and 10 g a.i. ha-1) in combination with four ethephon rates (0, 146, 292, 438 mL·ha-1) were imposed at the first flower (FF) stage of the development. 1-mCP increased plant height and number of main stem nodes in both years. In addition, 1-mCP-treated plants exhibited greater membrane integrity and increased photosystem II quantum efficiency and thus delayed senescence in both years. These potentials for yield increase were realized in 2011 with 1-mCP treatment exhibiting a higher lint yield. In 2012, although 1-mCP treatment increased number of open fruit and open fruit weight per plant significantly, no significant lint yield increase was detected.

Background: Hepatitis C virus (HCV) is a major cause of chronic liver disease, including cirrhosis and liver cancer. The aim of our study was to determine whether IL28B single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) rs12979860 and rs8099917 can be considered a prognostic host factor in untreated chronic HCV patients. methods: We set up a real-time Allele Specific PCR amplification to determine the allele present in each polymorphic site, and statistically grouped and com.a.ed this result with clinical data. Results: We determined rs12979860 and rs8099917 genotype and allele frequencies in a single cohort of untreated chronically HCV-infected patients. We found significant associations between higher inflam.a.ory activity, m.a.ured as ALT levels or mETAVIR scores and rs12979860 CC (P = 0.0013 and P = 0.0033, respectively) and rs8099917 TT (P = 0.0005 and P = 0.0264, respectively) genotypes. Interestingly, considering both genotypes together, we also found association with ALT levels (P = 0.0003;OR = 5.125) or mETAVIR scores (P = 0.0038;OR = 5.179), suggesting and additive effect on liver inflam.a.ion in these patients. Conclusion: we show association between hepatic inflam.a.ory activity in a single Argentinean untreated chronically HCV cohort and SNPs located in the interferon lambda gene region. The studied polymorphisms, together with further innate and adaptive immune responses, clearly play a role in modulating the HCV infected patients outcome, contributing to hepatic inflam.a.ion and possible fibrosis/cirrhosis.
