The environmental protection of tropical marine and coastal areas faces different challenges due to the diversity of aspects related to these areas, which include natural, social and economical issues. Despite these challenges, efforts for the protection of these areas are urgent nowadays because of the dramatical increase of human related threats like habitat destruction and population growth. Malaga Bay (MB) is a tectonic estuarine system located in Panama Bight (central region of the Colombian Pacific coast), which due to its origin shows important environmental characteristics of few sites in the Tropical Eastern Pacific (TEP) match. For these reasons, the government of Colombia declared in 2010, the bay’s marine area as a Marine National Natural Park in order to preserve its unique estuarine marine biodiversity. Despite this measure, MB presents several conditions that make environmental protection a very difficult task. In this paper, we present the geographical context, biodiversity and natural resources, environmental threats, the complexity of economic and social context, and the institutional and legal context of MB, to exemplify the difficulty that the protection of marine areas face in the TEP.

Rudimentary food fermentation can be defined as a spontaneous process of conversion of food components through enzy-matic action.A great variety of fermented foods are produced using spontaneous approaches;however,cocoa and coffee represent the most important agricultural commodities on international markets.As a manner to increase the efficiency of these processes,starter cultures have been developed and applied under field conditions.The selection process begins with the recovery of microbial strains from spontaneous fermentation through phenotypic and metabolic traits.Next,mutation-based breeding is used to develop and improve well-adapted starter cultures.With advances in synthetic biology,especially in the last decade,the development of robust cellular fabrications with high fermentative capacity has become easier-largely due to the development of genomic approaches,such as next-generation sequencing techniques,CRISPR-Cas system and bioinformatics tools.This review brings prospects on the use of synthetic biology to design new robust strains for use in cocoa and coffee fermentations,but which can be extended to other rudimentary foods.In addition,metabolic traits and target genes(e.g.,UvrA,RecA,GPD1,and GPP2)are proposed as a starting point for the improvement of cocoa and coffee starters.Finally,the regulatory and safety requirements for these food crops are addressed.This review aims to stimulate research on the process of fermentation and the associated synthetic biology tools to produce fermented food efficiently and sustainably.

Over the course of the last few years,the advertisement and marketing of commercial food products in the European market has seen an increasing focus on the beneficial effects of such products for consumer health(Regulation,2006).These so-called"health claims", which can be found on the label of some food products,have become a very important medium,aiming to reach the maximum amount of potential consumers possible,and the delivery of these promises has become a crucial objective for food companies or consortia.However,in most cases,the evidence backing up such claims(and their coveted acknowledgment on the product label) has often been cited as insufficient by institutions such as the European Food and Safety Authority (EFSA,Parma,Italy).

Vegetation uprooting is a complex process which depends on many interrelated factors. In this paper,attention is focused on the flow-induced uprooting in river bends, where the flow characteristics vary as effected by the channel’s curvature and its continuous changing in the downstream direction. Results are presented by an experimental work done in a high-amplitude meandering flume with mature herbaceous vegetation on the bed. In the first part of the paper, the variation along the bend of the geometrical(length, thickness, and radical architecture) and the mechanical(resistance force) characteristics of the roots are analyzed. In the second part of the paper, the transition from the condition of vegetation distributed on the bed to the condition of vegetation uprooted by the flow is experimentally examined.The results show that the flow-induced uprooting varies along the bend depending on the roots’ geometrical and mechanical characteristics which are, in turn, influenced by the variation of the water surface elevation along the bend itself. It has been found that lower values of the resistance force occur at the apex section where the roots are characterized by higher values of length and lower values of thickness and have radical apparatuses characterized by limited encumbrance, a high number of roots,and low bushyness. The flow-induced uprooting especially develops close to the outer bank along the channel reach between the bend entrance and the apex section, where the root resistance force and the water surface slope tend to decrease in value.

The rheological behavior of natural slurries consisting of fine-grained,reconstituted debris-flow deposits on pyroclastic terrains having different solid concentrations(ranging from 30 to 42%) has been investigated using a rotational rheometer equipped with a vane rotor system.Experiments were done by increasing the applied shear stress step by step;then a decreasing stress ramp was applied following the same shear stress levels.The slurry mixtures exhibit a typical yield-stress fluid behavior with a static yield stress larger than the dynamic yield stress.In the range of the shear rate corresponding to the flowlike behavior the slurry mixtures behave as a dilatant fluid at lower grain concentrations and as a pseudoplastic fluid in correspondence with the higher grain content,showing a strong discrepancy from the Bingham idealization.The rheological behavior is better interpreted by a Herschel-Bulkley model,whose rheological parameters strongly depend on the granular concentration.Therefore,a generalized Herschel-Bulkley model accounting for the bulk sediment concentration effect is proposed.The rheological behavior of natural slurries consisting of fine-grained, reconstituted debris-flow deposits on pyroclastic terrains having different solid concentrations(ranging from 30 to 42%) has been inves?tigated using a rotational rheometer equipped with a vane rotor system. New prognostic biomarkers of mortality in patients undergoing liver transplantation for hepatocellular carcinoma

The outcome prediction of hepatocellular carcinoma(HCC) patients undergoing liver transplantation(LT) was classically established using various macromorphological factors and serum alpha-fetoprotein levels prior to LT. However, other biomarkers have recently been reported to be associated with the prognosis of HCC patients undergoing to LT. This review summarizes clinical data on these new biomarkers. High blood levels of malondialdehyde, total antioxidant capacity, caspasecleaved cytokeratin-18, soluble CD40 ligand, substance P, C-reactive protein, and vascular endothelial growth factor, increased neutrophil to lymphocyte ratio and platelet to lymphocyte ratio in blood, high peripheral blood expression of human telomerase reverse transcriptase messenger ribonucleic acid, and high HCC expression of dickkopf-1 have recently been associated with decreased survival rates. In addition, high blood levels of des-gamma-carboxy prothrombin, and high HCC expression of glypican-3, E-cadherin and betacatenin have been associated with increased HCC recurrence. Additional research is necessary to establish the prognostic role of these biomarkers in HCC prior to LT. Furthermore, some of these biomarkers are also interesting because their potential modulation could help to create new research lines for improving the outcomes of those patients.

In this paper we provide a characterisation of rational developable surfaces in terms of the blossoms of the bounding curves and three rational functions∧,M,ν.Properties of developable surfaces are revised in this framework.In particular,a closed algebraic formula for the edge of regression of the surface is obtained in terms of the functions∧,M,ν,which are closely related to the ones that appear in the standard decomposition of the derivative of the parametrisation of one of the bounding curves in terms of the director vector of the rulings and its derivative.It is also shown that all rational developable surfaces can be described as the set of developable surfaces which can be constructed with a constant∧,M,ν.The results are readily extended to rational spline developable surfaces.

Mining plays a prominent role in the economy worldwide since human efforts have been more concentrated in extraction than recycling of natural resources.Ores composed of various minerals vary according to the geological evolution.These are raw materials for the conventional industries or fossil fuels for power generation.They can also be used in new technologies.The mining industry triggers intense environmental impacts.Human exposure to multiple small particles from mining effluent,such as dust,uranium,iron,lead,zinc,silicon,titanium,sulfur,nitrogen,platinum,chromium,vanadium,manganese,and mercury,is a health risk.Such elements can have several pathological effects,such as respiratory and cardiovascular,multiple chronic inflammation,and neurodegenerative diseases.Additionally,mining results in severe soil,water(surface and aquifer),and air contamination,reaching large areas far away from the source.Negligence of mining companies,with the recovery of ancient mined areas during the early development of environmental laws and regulations,compromises environmental integrity for more extended periods,increasing coverage of the affected areas.This review evaluates the toxicological effects on humans exposed to the mining wastes and the impact of these compounds on the ecosystem.The results of our evaluation can be used by the government,manufacturers,scientists,private environmental organizations,decision-makers,and readers from different areas of knowledge to explore the potential risk of mining to the ecosystem and human health.

This paper presents an Iterative Learning Control design applied to homing guidance of missiles against maneuvering targets. According to numerical experiments, although an increase of the control energies is appreciated with respect to a previous published base controller for comparison, this strategy, which is simple to realize, is able to reduce the time to reach the head-on condition to target destruction. This fact is important to minimize the missile lateral force-level to fulfill engaging in hyper-sonic target persecutions.
