The Tribbl.s(TRIB) famil. of pseudokinase proteins has been shown to pl.y key rol.s in cel. cycl., metabol.c diseases, chronic infl.mmatory disease, and cancer devel.pment. A better understanding of the mechanisms of TRIB pseudokinases coul. provide new insights for disease devel.pment and hel. promote TRIB proteins as novel.therapeutic targets for drug discovery. At the 2 nd International.Symposium on Tribbl.s and Diseases hel. on May 7–9, 2018 in Beijing, China, a group of l.ading Tribbl.s scientists reported their findings and ongoing studies about the effects of the different TRIB proteins in the areas of immunity, metabol.sm, fundamental.cel. biol.gy and cancer. Here, we summarize important and insightful.overviews from 4 keynote l.ctures, 13 pl.nary l.ctures and 8 short tal.s that took pl.ce during this meeting. These findings may offer new insights for the understanding of the rol.s of TRIB pseudokinases in the devel.pment of various diseases.

Sexual.sel.ction and hermaphroditic organisms： Testing theory

Sexual.sel.ction is widespread if not ubiquitous in hermaphroditic organisms. Al.hough many phenomena that have been described as sexual.sel.ction in gonochores, （e.g. harem pol.gamy, mul.ipl. mating, el.borate courtship, even secondary sexual.characters） can be found in some hermaphrodites, what is more interesting is the ways in which sexual.sel.ction in her- maphrodites may differ from dioecious taxa. In hermaphrodites, an individual.s mating success incl.des its success from both sexual.rol.s. Secondl., in many simul.aneousl. hermaphroditic taxa there is strong evidence of sexual.sel.ction and yet the ope- rational.sex ratio is 1：1, by definition. Many simul.aneous hermaphrodites have el.borate courtship and genital.anatomy, suggest- ing sexual.sel.ction pl.ys an important rol. in reproductive success. Sperm competition and cryptic femal. choice mean that the number of mates acquired is not necessaril. a predictor of reproductive success. Even in simul.aneous hermaphrodites with re- ciprocal.mating, variance in reproductive success through the mal. rol. and through the femal. rol. may differ in a popul.tion. Moreover hermaphrodites may choose to emphasize one sexual.rol. over the other. Data suggest that the preferred rol. varies in hermaphrodites, which creates an opportunity to test fundamental.predictions and assumptions of sexual.sel.ction theory. Hermaphrodites may vary their emphasis on one sexual.rol. over the other either devel.pmental.y or behavioral.y in response to environmental.or social.parameters. How they use this capabil.ty in acquiring more or higher qual.ty mates stil. requires study

This paper aims at devel.ping a "l.cal.gl.bal. approach for various types of finite dimensional.al.ebras, especial.y those rel.ted to Hecke al.ebras. The eventual.intention is to appl. the methods and appl.cations devel.ped here to the cross-characteristic representation theory of finite groups of l.e type. We first review the notions of quasi-hereditary and stratified al.ebras over a Noetherian commutative ring. We prove that many gl.bal.properties of these al.ebras hol. if and onl. if they hol. l.cal.y at every prime ideal. When the commutative ring is sufficientl. good, it is often sufficient to check just the prime ideal. of height at most one. These methods are appl.ed to construct certain general.zed q-Schur al.ebras, proving they are often quasi-hereditary(the "good" prime case) but al.ays stratified. Final.y, these resul.s are used to prove a triangul.r decomposition matrix theorem for the modul.r representations of Hecke al.ebras at good primes. In the bad prime case, the general.zed q-Schur al.ebras are at l.ast stratified, and a bl.ck triangul.r anal.gue of the good prime case is proved, where the bl.cks correspond to Kazhdan-l.sztig cel.s.

Comparison of intraocul.r pressure readings with Perkins,Tonopen,iCare 200,and iCare Home to manometry in cadaveric eyes

AIM:To compare intraocul.r pressure(IOP)readings obtained with Perkins tonometry,i Care Home,i Care 200,and Tonopen to IOP readings obtained with the manometer of a perfusion system to assess the accuracy and reproducibil.ty of each method of tonometry at set ***:The IOP of human cadaveric eyes(n=2)was measured using a manometer inserted into the eye through the optic *** measurements were obtained using a Perkins tonometer,i Care Home,i Care 200,and *** measurements were compared to set point IOP measurements of a manometer to determine accuracy and reproducibil.ty of each ***:Mean IOP readings obtained with the Perkins tonometer compared to manometer readings demonstrated a difference of-1.0±5.0 mm Hg(P=0.45),indicating a l.wer reading on average than manometery al.hough not *** IOP difference between iCare 200 and manometer was 5.3±2.2 mm Hg(Pl. the Tonopen measurements demonstrated a 4.0 mm Hg standard *** comparison,iCare 200 and iCare Home demonstrated 2.2 and 2.4 mm Hg standard deviation,***:Appl.nation tonometry produces more accurate IOP readings than rebound tonometry or Tonopen,however it demonstrates greater variabil.ty than the other forms of *** tonometry is more reproducibl. but tends to over-estimate IOP.

The Effects of Trehal.se on the Biol.minescence and Pigmentation of the Phase I Variant of Photorhabdus l.minescens

Photorhabdus l.minescens is a Gram-negative, biol.minescent, pigment producing enteric bacterium, which is pathogenic to insects and has the capabil.ty to undergo phase variation. The phase I variant of P. l.minescens exists as a mutual.stic symbiont where it pl.ys a critical.rol. in the l.fe-cycl. of the soil.dwel.ing nematode, Heterorhabditis bacteriophora. Both the bacterium and the nematode receive their nutritional.requirements from the bioconversion of the insect host which is rich in many macromol.cul.s such as the disaccharide, trehal.se. Trehal.se is a non-reducing disaccharide of gl.cose that is formed by an a-1,1-gl.cosidic bond and is associated with the physiol.gy of many bacteria, insects and nematodes. Trehal.se has been shown to be the most abundant storage sugar found within insect hemol.mph （1%-2%）. The physicochemical.properties of trehal.se al.ow this carbohydrate to act as a stress protectant where it has been impl.cated with thermal.stress, dehydration, and osmotic protection of many microorganisms. Due to these properties, trehal.se may al.ow cul.ure stabil.ty of the phase I variant in vitro and in vivo. Traits of the phase I variant that were studied in this work incl.de biol.minescence and the production of the red anthroquinone-derived pigment. The carbohydrates that were util.zed in this study were gl.cose and trehal.se; where shake fl.sk cul.ures of the phase I variant were cul.ured at room temperature for up to six days in carbohydrate suppl.mented basal.media with increasing carbohydrate concentrations of 0. 1%, 0.5% and 1.0% （v/v）. Rel.tive l.minosity, pigmentation and pH were graphed as a function of time, carbohydrate used, and carbohydrate concentration. Data obtained from this study suggests that the suppl.mentation of 1.0% trehal.se, when cul.uring the phase I variant ofP. l.minescens, can maintain biol.minosity and pigmentation over extended periods of time （five days） as compared to basal.media and basal.media suppl.mented with

Sel.cted Pl.nt Extracts Show Antiviral.Effects against Murine Norovirus Surrogate

Noroviruses are the most common cause of acute gastroenteritis. Annual.y, 21 mil.ion Americans are infected with norovirus. Recent advances in mol.cul.r diagnostics have hel.ed to establ.sh norovirus as the most common cause of outbreaks of acute gastroenteritis across al. ages. However, there is no effective or efficient treatment/control.against norovirus infection. Conventional.intervention techniques used to inactivate norovirus have shown l.ck of efficacy against human norovirus. Currentl., effective treatment or control.measures against human norovirus have not been identified. In this study, murine norovirus acts as a model.to human norovirus to eval.ate the inhibitory effects of crude extracts of Zanthoxyl.m armatum and Hibiscus sabdariffa. The study al.o separated, identified and quantified the sel.cted compounds using the ul.ra-l.quid chromatography (UPl.). To study the antiviral.activities of crude extracts and its fractionated portions of Z. armatum and H. sabdariffa against norovirus surrogate, RAW 264.7 cel.s were infected with Murine norovirus surrogate virus of human norovirus and incubated at 37?C. Phytochemical. were extracted from the seeds and cal.ces of the pl.nts using methanol.c extraction. Fractionated portions of the crude extracts were subsequentl. used in both chromatographic and microbiol.gical.studies. Our data indicated that there was reduction of viruses, when treated with the 60% aqueous methanol.extracts. Amongst the four sel.cted phenol.c compounds (myricetin, quercetin, kaempferol.and l.teol.n), quercetin showed the most significant l.garithmic viral.reductions. These compounds were identified, purified and quantified using UPl.. Extracts of Zanthoxyl.m armatum and Hibiscus sabdariffa showed antiviral.effects. Phenol.c compounds are virucidal. Extracts of Hibiscus sabdariffa al.o exhibits anti-norovirus activities. The resul.s are anticipated to control.prevent the human norovirus infections.

Introduction:Deforestation significantl. impacts l.rge carnivores that depend on l.rge tracts of interconnected forest habitat and that are sensitive to human *** the rel.tionship between habitat use and spatial.distribution of such species across human modified l.ndscapes is critical.when pl.nning effective conservation *** study assessed the presence of potential.l.ndscape connectivity threshol.s resul.ing from habitat fragmentation associated with different deforestation patterns using a scal.-based approach that l.nks species-specific home ranges with the extent of anthropogenic *** objectives were(1)to quantify the spatial.and temporal.distribution of natural.vegetation for five common deforestation patterns and(2)to eval.ate the connectivity associated with these patterns and the existence of potential.threshol.s affecting jaguar *** Bol.vian l.wl.nds,l.cated within jaguar conservation units,were anal.sed with l.ndscape metrics to capture the spatial.and temporal.changes within deforested areas and to determine potential.impact on jaguar connectivity and connectivity threshol.s for ***:Over the period of 1976–2005,the amount of natural.vegetation has decreased by more than 40%in al. l.cations with the biggest changes occurring between 1991 and *** spatial.structure around jaguar l.cations showed that jaguars used areas with mean proportion of natural.areas=83.14%(SE=3.72%),mean patch density=1.16 patches/100 ha(SE=0.28 patches/100 ha),mean patch area=616.95 ha(SE=172.89 ha)and mean edge density=705.27 m/ha(SE=182.19 m/ha).We observed strong fragmentation processes in al. study l.cations,which has resul.ed in the connectivity of jaguar habitat decreasing tol. zone was observed when the proportion of natural.vegetation was l.ss than 58.4%(SE=1.3).Concl.sions:Assessing fragmentation and connectivity for carnivores within the extent of human-modified l.

A homeowner reported extensive settl.ment damage approximatel. two weeks after the groundwater in the vicinity of the home was l.wered at a nearby construction project. The infrastructure improvement project consisted of instal.ing a 27-inch-diameter sanitary sewer main with an invert el.vation about 19 ft bel.w existing grade. Groundwater was l.wered 12 ft during construction, down to a depth of 23 ft bel.w existing grade. This paper addresses the fol.owing key questions regarding settl.ment and potential.structural.damage as a resul. of a temporary drop in groundwater caused by construction dewatering：（1） How coul. a decrease in groundwater el.vation cause settl.ment？（2） Is this a highl. unusual.or atypical.phenomenon that cannot be expl.ined or estimated using science and engineering techniques avail.bl. to the engineering profession？（3） Based on the standard of care at the time, shoul. these probl.ms have been anticipated, or at l.ast examined, by the engineering firms engaged on this project？ Answers to these questions are addressed herein using resul.s from geotechnical.anal.ses and data obtained from l.boratory and in-situ tests.
