Identification of thermal front dynamics in the northern Malacca Strait using ROMS 3d-model

The thermal front in the oceanic system is believed to have a significant effect on biological *** an era of climate change,changes in heat regulation between the atmosphere and oceanic interior can alter the characteristics of this important *** the simulation results of the 3d Regional Ocean Modelling System(ROMS),we identified the location of thermal fronts and determined their dynamic variability in the area between the southern Andaman Sea and northern Malacca *** Single Image Edge detection(SIEd)algorithm was used to detect the thermal front from model-derived *** show that a thermal front occurred every year from 2002 to 2012 with the temperature gradient at the location of the front was 0.3°C/*** to the years affected by El Ni?o and negative Indian Ocean dipole(IOd),the normal years(e.g.,May 2003)show the presence of the thermal front at every selected depth(10,25,50,and 75 m),whereas El Ni?o and negative IOd during 2010 show the presence of the thermal front only at depth of 75 m due to greater warming,leading to the thermocline deepening and enhanced *** May 2003,the thermal front was separated by cooler SST in the southern Andaman Sea and warmer SST in the northern Malacca *** higher SST in the northern Malacca Strait was believed due to the besieged Malacca Strait,which trapped the heat and make it difficult to release while higher chlorophyll a in Malacca Strait is due to the freshwater conduit from nearby rivers(Klang,Langat,Perak,and Selangor).Furthermore,compared to the southern Andaman Sea,the chlorophyll a in the northern Malacca Strait is easier to reach the surface area due to the shallower thermocline,which allows nutrients in the area to reach the surface faster.

This paper presents a knowledge graph-based approach for the dynamic control of a district heating network with integrated emission dispersion modelling. We propose an interoperable and extensible implementation to forecast the anticipated heat demand of a municipal heating network, minimise associated total generation cost based on a previously devised methodology, and couple it with dispersion simulations for induced airborne pollutants to provide automatic insights into air quality implications of various heat sourcing strategies. We create cross-domain interoperability in the nexus of energy and air quality via newly developed ontologies and semantic software agents, which can be chained together via The World Avatar dynamic knowledge graph to resemble the behaviour of complex systems. Furthermore, we integrate the City Energy Analyst into this ecosystem to provide building-level insights into energy demand and renewable generation potential to foster strategic analyses and scenario planning. Underlying calculations use building and weather data from the knowledge graph in place of inherent assumptions in the official software release, facilitating a more data-driven approach. All use cases are implemented for a mid-size town in Germany as a proof-of-concept, and a unified visualisation interface is provided, allowing for the examination of 3d buildings alongside their corresponding energy demand and supply time series, as well as emission dispersion data. With this work, we outline the potential of Semantic Web technologies to connect digital twins for holistic energy modelling in smart cities, thereby addressing the increasing complexity of interconnected energy systems.

Reinforcement learning models for scheduling in wireless networks

The dynamicity of available resources and net- work conditions, such as channel capacity and traffic charac- teristics, have posed major challenges to scheduling in wire- less networks. Reinforcement learning （RL） enables wire- less nodes to observe their respective operating environment, learn, and make optimal or near-optimal scheduling deci- sions. Learning, which is the main intrinsic characteristic of RL, enables wireless nodes to adapt to most forms of dynamicity in the operating environment as time goes by. This paper presents an extensive review on the application of the traditional and enhanced RL approaches to various types of scheduling schemes, namely packet, sleep-wake and task schedulers, in wireless networks, as well as the advantages and performance enhancements brought about by RL. Addi- tionally, it presents how various challenges associated with scheduling schemes have been approached using RL. Finally, we discuss various open issues related to RL-based schedul- ing schemes in wireless networks in order to explore new re- search directions in this area. discussions in this paper are presented in a tutorial manner in order to establish a founda- tion for further research in this field.

Stopping or reducing dietary fiber intake reduces constipation and its associated symptoms

AIM: To investigate the effect of reducing dietary fiber on patients with idiopathic constipation. METHOdS: Sixty-three cases of idiopathic constipation presenting between May 2008 and May 2010 were enrolled into the study after colonoscopy excluded an organic cause of the constipation. Patients with previous colon surgery or a medical cause of their constipation were excluded. All patients were given an explanation on the role of fiber in the gastrointestinal tract. They were then asked to go on a no fiber diet for 2 wk. Thereafter, they were asked to reduce the amount of dietary fiber intake to a level that they found acceptable. dietary fiber intake, symptoms of constipation, difficulty in evacuation of stools, anal bleeding, abdominal bloating or abdominal pain were recorded at 1 and 6 mo. RESULTS: The median age of the patients (16 male, 47 female) was 47 years (range, 20-80 years). At 6 mo, 41 patients remained on a no fiber diet, 16 on a reduced fiber diet, and 6 resumed their high fiber diet for religious or personal reasons. Patients who stopped or reduced dietary fiber had significant improvement in their symp-toms while those who continued on a high fiber diet had no change. Of those who stopped fiber completely, the bowel frequency increased from one motion in 3.75 d (± 1.59 d) to one motion in 1.0 d (± 0.0 d) (P duced fiber intake had increased bowel frequency from a mean of one motion per 4.19 d (± 2.09 d) to one motion per 1.9 d (± 1.21 d) on a reduced fiber diet (P d on a high fiber diet continued to have a mean of one motion per 6.83 d (± 1.03 d) before and after consultation. Metabolic syndrome is a cluster of several clinical conditions characterized by insulin-resistance and high cardiovascular risk. Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease is the liver expression of the metabolic syndrome, and insulin resistance can be a frequent comorbidity in several chronic liver diseases, in particular hepatitis C virus infection and/or cirrhosis. Several studies have demonstrated that insulin action is not only relevant for glucose control, but also for vascular homeostasis. Insulin regulates nitric oxide production, which mediates to a large degree the vasodilating, antiinflammatory and antithrombotic properties of a healthy endothelium, guaranteeing organ perfusion. The effects of insulin on the liver microvasculature and the effects of IR on sinusoidal endothelial cells have been studied in animal models of non-alcoholic fatty liver disease. The hypotheses derived from these studies and the potential translation of these results into humans are critically discussed in this review.

Probabilistic outlier detection for sparse multivariate geotechnical site investigation data using Bayesian learning

Various uncertainties arising during acquisition process of geoscience data may result in anomalous data instances(i.e.,outliers)that do not conform with the expected pattern of regular data *** sparse multivariate data obtained from geotechnical site investigation,it is impossible to identify outliers with certainty due to the distortion of statistics of geotechnical parameters caused by outliers and their associated statistical uncertainty resulted from data *** paper develops a probabilistic outlier detection method for sparse multivariate data obtained from geotechnical site *** proposed approach quantifies the outlying probability of each data instance based on Mahalanobis distance and determines outliers as those data instances with outlying probabilities greater than *** tackles the distortion issue of statistics estimated from the dataset with outliers by a re-sampling technique and accounts,rationally,for the statistical uncertainty by Bayesian machine ***,the proposed approach also suggests an exclusive method to determine outlying components of each *** proposed approach is illustrated and verified using simulated and real-life *** showed that the proposed approach properly identifies outliers among sparse multivariate data and their corresponding outlying components in a probabilistic *** can significantly reduce the masking effect(i.e.,missing some actual outliers due to the distortion of statistics by the outliers and statistical uncertainty).It also found that outliers among sparse multivariate data instances affect significantly the construction of multivariate distribution of geotechnical parameters for uncertainty *** emphasizes the necessity of data cleaning process(e.g.,outlier detection)for uncertainty quantification based on geoscience data.

BACKGROUNd Closed-loop small bowel obstruction(CL-SBO)can threaten the viability of the intestine by obstructing a bowel segment at two adjacent *** recognition and surgery are *** To analyze the outcomes of patients who underwent surgery for CL-SBO and to evaluate clinical *** Patients who underwent surgery for suspected CL-BSO on computed tomography(CT)at a single center between 2013 and 2019 were evaluated *** were divided into three groups by perioperative outcome,including viable bowel,reversible ischemia,and irreversible *** and laboratorial variables at presentation were compared and postoperative outcomes were *** Of 148 patients with CL-SBO,28(19%)had a perioperative viable small bowel,86(58%)had reversible ischemia,and 34(23%)had irreversible *** with a higher age had higher risk for perioperative irreversible ischemia[odds ratio(OR):1.03,95%confidence interval(CI):0.99-1.06].Patients with American Society of Anaesthesiologists(ASA)classification≥3 had higher risk of perioperative irreversible ischemia compared to lower ASA classifications(OR:3.76,95%CI:1.31-10.81).Eighty-six patients(58%)did not have elevated C-reactive protein(>10 mg/L),and between-group differences were *** in-hospital stay was significantly longer for patients with irreversible ischemia(median 8 d,P=0.001)than for those with reversible ischemia(median 6 d)or a viable bowel(median 5 d).Postoperative morbidity was significantly higher in patients with perioperative irreversible ischemia(45%,P=0.043)compared with reversible ischemia(20%)and viable bowel(4%).CONCLUSION Older patients or those with higher ASA classification had an increased risk of irreversible ischemia in case of *** irreversible ischemia,postoperative morbidity was increased.
