Economic growth and nutrition transition: an empirical analysis comparing demand elasticities for foods in China and Russia

This study provides empirical evidence on the link between economic growth and nutrition transition in two emerging economies, China and Russia. Both countries have experienced rising average incomes, accompanied by an increasing rate of nutrition-related chronic diseases in recent years. Given the regional heterogeneity between these two countries, we analyze the extent to which income growth as a major driver of nutrition transition has a significant effect on the consumption of different food aggregates and how these effects differ between Chinese and Russian consumers. Our results indicate that with increasing household incomes over time the demand for carbohydrates decreases, while the demand for meat and dairy products, as well as fruits increases. This is a development generally known as nutrition transition. Further, we estimate a Quadratic Almost Ideal Demand System（QUAIDS） for nine different food aggregates for China and Russia. Our results indicate that in both countries all food aggregates have positive expenditure elasticities and are thus normal goods. Moreover, our results indicate that in 2008/2009 meat is still a luxury good in China yet a necessity good in Russia. For 2009, the highest own-price elasticities in China are found for non-meat protein sources and dairy products. Within the meat group, beef, poultry and mutton have the highest price elasticities in China. In Russia, the milk and dairy group, together with the vegetable group, is the most price-elastic food group in 2008. In line with the definition of a nutrition transition, our overall results underscore the finding that income growth in China and Russia tends to increase the demand for animal-based products much stronger than, for example, the demand for carbohydrates. Encouraging Visual Outcome of a New Accommodative Intraocular Lens: A Retrospective Long-Term Study with a Mean Follow-Up of 5.3 Years

Purpose: To assess the visual outcome after implantation of the new Hydrophylic IOL type 41 B/G accommodating intraocular lens (AIOL). Methods: The presented lens was implanted during cataract surgery. All patients were offered follow-ups, allowing two postoperative measurements to be performed at 3 months and between 2020 and 2021. The mean time between lens implantation and last follow-up was 5.3 years (min. 1 year, max. 10 years). Excluded were patients with age-related macular degeneration or amblyopia. Patients with a foreign lens implanted into the second eye were included in a separate control group. Corrected distance (CDVA) and uncorrected distance visual acuity (UDVA) at 5 m, and corrected near (CNVA) and uncorrected near visual acuity (UNVA) at 40 cm were assessed. Furthermore, the postoperative spherical equivalent (SE), the dependence on spectacles and the occurrence of optical phenomena were evaluated. Results: The final study cohort consists of 65 patients with 119 implanted AIOLs. Significantly better visual results were obtained in both postoperative follow-ups compared with the preoperative results. The mean values of the last follow-up for the UNVA, CNVA, UDVA, and CDVA were 0.107 ± 0.10;0.039 ± 0.08;0.097 ± 0.11;and 0.040 ± 0.09 logMAR, respectively. Visual outcomes remained on a high level for up to 10 years and showed significantly better results compared to the control group. Postoperative SE was significantly improved. Nearly 70% of patients were no longer dependent on glasses. Furthermore, the occurrence of disturbing optical phenomena was denied by all patients. Conclusion: The results of this AIOL are particularly promising, especially since gratifying visual results could still be measured 10 years after implantation.

Senescence-specific Alteration of Hydrogen Peroxide Levels in Arabidopsis thaliana and Oilseed Rape Spring Variety Brassica napus ***

In order to analyze the signaling function of hydrogen peroxide （H202） production in senescence in more detail, we manipulated intracellular H202 levels in Arabidopsis thaliala （L.） Heynh by using the hydrogen- peroxide-sensitive part of the Escherichia coil transcription regulator OxyR, which was directed to the cytoplasm as well as into the peroxisomes. H202 levels were lowered and senescence was delayed in both transgenic lines, but OxyR was found to be more effective in the cytoplasm. To transfer this knowledge to crop plants, we analyzed oilseed rape plants Brassica napus L. cv. Mozart for H20~ and its scavenging enzymes catalase （CAT） and ascorbate peroxidase （APX） during leaf and plant development. H202 levels were found to increase during bolting and flowering time, but no increase could be observed in the very late stages of senescence. With increasing H202 levels, CAT and APX activities declined, so it is likely that similar mechanisms are used in oilseed rape and Arabidopsis to control H202 levels. Under elevated CO2 conditions, oilseed rape senescence was accelerated and coincided with an earlier increase in H202 levels, indicating that H202 may be one of the signals to inducing senescence in a broader range of Brassicaceae.

The role of NADPH oxidase （NOX） enzymes in neurodegenerative disease

Recently, mounting evidence implicating reactive oxygen species （ROS） generated by NADPH oxidase （NOX） enzymes in the pathogenesis of several nenrodegenerative diseases including Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis （ALS）, Alzheimer＇s （AD）, Parkinson＇s （PD） and polyglntamine disease, have arisen. NOX enzymes are transmembrane proteins and generate reactive oxygen species by transporting electrons across lipid membranes. Under normal healthy conditions, low levels of ROS produced by NOX enzymes have been shown to play a role in neuronal differentiation and synaptic plasticity. However, in chronic nenrodegenerative diseases over-activation of NOX in neurons, as well as in astrocytes and microglia, has been linked to pathogenic processes such as oxidative stress, exitotoxicity and neuroinflammation. In this review, we summarize the current knowledge about NOX functions in the healthy central nervous system and especially the role of NOX enzymes in neurodegenerative disease processes.

Current Injection Provokes Rapid Expansion of the Guard Cell Cytosolic Volume and Triggers Ca^2＋ Signals

High-resolution microscopy opens the door for detailed single-cell studies with fluorescent reporter dyes and proteins. We used a confocal spinning disc microscope to monitor fluorescent dyes and the fluorescent protein Venus in tobacco and Arabidopsis guard cells. Multi-barreled microelectrodes were used to inject dyes and apply voltage pulses, which provoke transient rises in the cytosolic Ca^2＋ level. Voltage pulses also caused changes in the distribution of Lucifer Yellow and Venus, which pointed to a reversible increase of guard cell cytosolic volume. The dynamic cytosolic volume changes turned out to be provoked by current injection of ions. A reduction of the clamp current, by blocking K^＋ uptake channels with Cs^＋, strongly suppressed the cytosolic volume changes. Cs^＋ not only inhibited the expansion of the cytosol, but also inhibited hyperpolarization-induced elevations of the cytosolic Ca^2＋ concentration. A complete loss of voltage-induced Ca^2＋ signals occurred when Ca^2＋-permeable plasma membrane channels were simultaneously blocked with La^3＋. This shows that two mechanisms cause hyperpolarization-induced elevation of the cytosolic Ca^2＋-concentration：（i） activation of voltage-dependent Ca^2＋-permeable channels, （ii） osmotically induced expansion of the cytosol, which leads to a release of Ca^2＋ from intracellular stores.

Rhythmical massage improves autonomic nervous system function:a single-blind randomised controlled trial

Background： Rhythmical massage therapy（RMT） is a massage technique used in anthroposophic ***： The authors aimed to investigate the physiological action of RMT on the cardiovascular system by analysing heart rate variability（HRV）.Design, setting, participants and intervention： This study was a randomised, controlled and single-blinded trial, involving 44 healthy women（mean age：（26.20 ± 4.71） years）. The subjects were randomised to one of three arms： RMT with aromatic oil（RA）, RMT without aromatic oil（RM） or standardised sham massage（SM）. In the study the subjects were exposed to a standardised stress situation followed by one of the study techniques and Holter electrocardiograms（ECGs） were recorded for 24 *** outcome measures： HRV parameters were calculated from linear（time and frequency domain） and nonlinear dynamics（symbolic dynamics, Poincare plot analysis） of the 24-h Holter ECG ***： Short-and long-term effects of massage on autonomic regulation differed significantly among the three groups. Immediately after an RMT session, stimulation of HRV was found in the groups RA and RM. The use of an aromatic oil produced greater short-term measurable changes in HRV compared with rhythmic massage alone, but after 24 h the effect was no longer distinguishable from the RM *** lowest stimulation of HRV parameters was measured in the SM ***： RMT causes specific and marked stimulation of the autonomic nervous system. Use of a medicinal aromatic oil had only a temporary effect on HRV, indicating that the RM causes the most relevant long-term effect. The effect is relatively specific, as the physiological effects seen in the group of subjects who received only SM were considerably less pronounced.

Acute effects of Helicobacter pylori extracts on gastric mucosal blood flow in the mouse

AIM: To investigate the mechanisms underlying the reduction in gastric blood flow induced by a luminal water extract of Helicobacter pylori (HPE). METHODS: The stomachs of isourane-anesthetized mice were exteriorized, and the mucosal surface exposed. Blood flow was measured with the laser-Doppler technique, and systemic arterial blood pressure monitored. C57BL/6 mice were exposed to water extract produced from H pylori strain 88-23. To investigate the role of a nerveor iNOS-mediated pathway, we used intraluminal lidocaine and iNOS-/-mice. Blood flow response to the endogenous nitric oxide synthase inhibitor asymmetric dimethyl arginine (ADMA) was also assessed. RESULTS: In wild-type mice, HPE decreased mucosal blood flow by approximately 30%. This reduction was abolished in iNOS-defi cient mice, and by pre-treatment with lidocaine. Luminally applied ADMA resulted in reduction in blood flow similar to that observed in wild-type mice exposed to HPE. CONCLUSION: A H pylori water extract reduces gastric mucosal blood flow acutely through iNOS- and nerve-mediated pathways.
