Highly sensitive flexible strain sensor based on the two-dimensional semiconductor tellurium with a negative gauge factor

Research on flexible strain sensors has advanced rapidly in recent years, with particular attention being devoted to two-dimensional(2D) semiconductor materials owing to their exceptional mechanical and electrical properties that are conducive to sophisticated sensing performance. However, resistive strain sensors based on 2D semiconductor materials typically exhibit positive gauge factors(GF), while materials for strain sensors with a negative GF remain elusive. We have identified a trend of reduction in the band gap of the emerging 2D semiconductor material tellurium(Te) under strain in simulations reported in past research,and have observed a negative GF in the Te-based strain sensor. In this study, we combined Te with a flexible polyethylene terephthalate(PET) substrate to manufacture a flexible strain sensor with a significantly negative GF. The results of tests revealed that the Te-based strain sensor achieved an impressive maximum sensitivity of-139.7 within a small range of bending-induced strain(< 1%). Furthermore, it exhibited excellent linearity and good cyclic stability, and was successfully applied to monitor limb movements. The work here verifies the significant potential for the use of Te-based strain sensors in next-generation flexible electronics.

Understanding Behavioral Manifestations of Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder in People with Intellectual Disabilities—A Qualitative Study

Background: There is limited knowledge about obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) in people with intellectual disabilities (IDs). This paper describes the manifestation of compulsive behaviors associated with OCD at the behavioral level in people with ID in institutionalized settings. The aim was to gain nuanced insight into appropriate understanding and classification in this specific context, and derive implications for research and practice. Methods: Individual cases of people with ID (n = 7) were studied to assess compulsive symptoms through two days of on-site observation of the person with ID within the institution, guided group discussions (n = 28), and semi-structured interviews with key informants and caregivers of the person with ID (n = 20). Caregiver ratings of the compulsive behavior checklist were compiled. Data were analyzed using qualitative content analysis. Results: All forms of OCD were present. Characteristics of compulsive behaviors in people with ID at the behavioral level included less complex and more obvious compulsive acts, immediate responses, signs of tension, motor restlessness, facial expression changes, repetition, need for predictability, time-consuming behaviors, and aggressive reactions when these acts were interrupted. Some of the compulsive behaviors corresponded to the ICD-11 OCD code 6B20, and others to compulsions as a psychological symptom (MB23.4). Conclusions: OCD may manifest atypically at the behavioral level in people with ID, posing significant challenges for accurate classification due to symptom ambiguity. Follow-up differential diagnostic studies are needed to more accurately identify and differentiate OCD symptoms in people with ID. Further, disorder-specific guidelines for recognizing OCD in people with ID are needed for institutionalized settings without psychiatric-psychotherapeutic expertise.

Memristors as non-volatile memory devices have gained numerous attentions owing to their advantages in storage,in-memory computing, synaptic applications, etc. In recent years, two-dimensional(2D) materials with moderate defects have been discovered to exist memristive feature. However, it is very difficult to obtain moderate defect degree in 2D materials, and studied on modulation means and mechanism becomes urgent and essential. In this work, we realized memristive feature with a bipolar switching and a configurable on/off ratio in a two-terminal MoS_(2) device(on/off ratio ~100), for the first time, from absent to present using laser-modulation to few-layer defect-free MoS_(2)(about 10 layers), and its retention time in both high resistance state and low resistance state can reach 2×10^(4) s. The mechanism of the laser-induced memristive feature has been cleared by dynamic Monte Carlo simulations and first-principles calculations. Furthermore, we verified the universality of the laser-modulation by investigating other 2D materials of TMDs. Our work will open a route to modulate and optimize the performance of 2D semiconductor memristive devices.

Improving risk reduction potential of weather index insurance by spatially downscaling gridded climate data-a machine learning approach

Open-access gridded climate products have been suggested as a potential source of data for index insurance design and operation in data-limited ***,index insurance requires climate data with long historical records,global geographical coverage and fine spatial resolution at the same time,which is nearly impossible to satisfy,especially with open-access *** this paper,we spatially downscaled gridded climate data(precipitation,temperature,and soil moisture)in coarse spatial resolution with globally available longterm historical records to finer spatial resolution,using satellite-based data and machine learning *** then investigated the effect of index insurance contracts based on downscaled climate data for hedging spring wheat *** study employed countylevel spring wheat yield data between 1982 and 2018 from 56 counties overall in Kazakhstan and *** results showed that in the majority of cases(70%),hedging effectiveness of index insurances increases when climate data is spatially downscaled with a machine learning *** improvements are statistically significant(p≤0.05).Among other climate data,more improvements in hedging effectiveness were observed when the insurance design was based on downscaled temperature and precipitation ***,this study highlights the reasonability and benefits of downscaling climate data for insurance design and operation.

PLA2G7: a new player in shaping energy metabolism and lifespan

In a recent study published in science,Spadaro and colleagues described the downregulation of PLA2G7 through sustained calory restriction as a crucial factor for lowering inflammatory mechanisms and contributing to ***2G7’s identification as a critical regulatory gene is important to better understand the role of adipose tissue metabolism in regulating immune-metabolic *** data show that long-term calorie restriction(CR)improves health and extends life expectancy.1 Chronic 40%CR increases susceptibility to infections in mice,shortening their *** contrast,the Comprehensive Assessment of Long-Term Effects of Reducing Intake of Energy(CALERIE)analysis found that moderate CR in humans over 24 months did not reduce immune functions.14%sustained CR was associated with improved adipose tissue metabolism,decreased inflammation,and reduced thymic *** et *** that low platelet activating factor acetyl hydrolase(PLA2G7)correlates with immune-metabolic consequences of CR and contributes to decreased inflammation and a longer lifespan in healthy mid-aged adults.1 PLA2G7 is a lipoprotein-associated calcium-independent phospholipase A2 involved in phospholipid catabolism during inflammatory and oxidative stress responses.

Machine-learning driven global optimization of surface adsorbate geometries
