mechanisms associated with winter intraseasonal extreme sea ice extent in the Weddell Sea

Previous studies have shown evidence of atmospheric extratropical wave trains modulating sea ice area in the Weddell and Amundsen/Bellingshausen seas on intraseasonal time-scales(20–100 d). Here we investigate mechanisms relating intraseasonal extreme sea ice extent and Ekman layer dynamics with emphasis on the Weddell Sea. This study extends from 1989 to 2013 and focuses on the winter season. Wind stress τ is calculated with winds from the Climate Forecast System reanalysis(CFSR) to evaluate momentum transfer between the atmosphere and the Ekman layer. Lag-composites of the anomalies of Ekman transport and the Ekman pumping indicate that divergence of mass in the Ekman layer and upwelling lead the occurrence of extreme sea ice contraction on intraseasonal time-scales in the Weddell Sea. Opposite conditions(i.e., convergence of the mass and downwelling) lead extreme sea ice expansion on intraseasonal time-scales. This study suggests that the Ekman pumping resulting from the anomalous wind stress on intraseasonal time-scales can transport these warmer waters to the surface contributing to sea ice melting. Additionally, high resolution sea ice fraction and ocean currents obtained from satellite and in situ data are used to investigate in detail mechanisms associated with persistent extreme sea ice expansion and contraction on intraseasonal time-scales. These case studies reveal that atmospheric circumpolar waves on intraseasonal time-scales can induce contrasting anomalies of about ±20% in sea ice concentration at the Weddell and western Antarctica Peninsula margins within less than 30 d. This study shows that extreme anomalies in sea ice may lag between 5–25 d(1–5 pentads) the ocean-atmospheric forcing on intraseasonal time-scales.

mJO modulation of Station Rainfall in the Semiarid Serido,Northeast Brazil

The influence of the madden Julian Oscillation (mJO) on station rainfall over the Seridó region of Rio Grande do Norte state, Northeast Brazil is examined based on 17 raingauge daily data over 30-year period (1 January-31 December, 1981-2010). The Seridó is one of the driest regions in Northeast Brazil and is recognized as particularly vulnerable to desertification by the United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification. Firstly, daily anomalies were calculated by removing the 30-year daily climatology. Then, to distinguish the mJO signal from other patterns of climate variability, the daily anomalies were band pass filtered in the frequency domain (20 - 90 days) by applying Fast Fourier Transform (FFT). Composites of rainfall anomalies were computed for each of the eight phases of the mJO during February-may (FmAm) rainy season, based on the Jones-carvalho mJO index. Only days classified as mJO events were considered in the composites. For each phase composite, statistical significance tests were computed independently at each individual station by applying a two-tailed Student’s t-test at 5% significance level. Preliminary results showed that the rainfall anomalies have a spatial coherence throughout the mJO cycle. Extreme positive (negative) anomalies occurred in phase 2 (phase 5), where 13 (12) out of the 17 stations showed statistically significant anomalies in the range of 0.9 - 1.9 mm/day (0.8 - 1.7 mm/day). The typical difference between the wet mJO phase 2 and dry phase 5 represented at least 50% modulation of the daily mean rainfall.

Optical immersion clearing is a technique that has been widely studied for more than two decades and that is used to originate a temporary transparency effect in biological *** applied in cooperation with clinical methods it provides optimization of diagnosis and treatment *** technique turns biological tissues more transparent through two main mechanisms-tissue dehydration and refractive index(RI)matching between tissue *** matching is obtained by partial replacement of interstit ial water by a biocompat ible agent that presents higher RI and it can be completely rever sible by natural rehydration in vrivo or by assisted rehydration in ex vivo *** data to characterize and discriminate between the two mechanisms and to find new ones are *** a simple method,based on collimated transmittance and thickness measurements made from muscle samples under treatment,we have estimated the diffusion properties of glucose,ethylene glycol(EG)and water that were used to perform such char acterization and *** these properties with data from literature that characterize their diffusion in water we have observed that musde cell membrane permeability limits agent and water diffusion in the *** same experi-mental data has allowed to calculate the optical dearing(OC)eficiency and make an inter-pretation of the internal changes that occurred in muscle during the *** same methodology can now be used to perform similar studies with other agents and in other tissues in order to solve engineering problems at design of inexpensive and robust technologies for a *** improvement of optical tomogr aphic techmiques with better contrast and in depth imaging.

This study investigated the action of proteolytic enzymes in the production of goat viscera hydrolysates,and their flavoring *** study focus the production of flavor precursor molecules and the formation of volatile compounds resulting from four hydrolysis treatments:HA-Alcalase®,HF-Flavourzyme®,HN-Neutrase®,and HFN-Flavourzyme® and Neutrase®.The highest degree of hydrolysis (26.74%),number (23 volatiles) and concentration of volatile compounds (274.0 μg/L) were obtained with the action of *** main classes of volatile compounds identified in hydrolysates included acids,aldehydes,pyrazines,terpenes and Streacker *** acids,sugars and fatty acids were identified with higher concentrations in HF and HFN hydrolysates due to the low participation of these precursors in the formation of volatile ***,the use of Alcalase in the proteolysis of goat viscera stood out compared to other enzymes,providing impacting aroma compounds,such as pyrazines,for meat flavor.

mitochondrial GPX1 silencing triggers differential photosynthesis impairment in response to salinity in rice plants

The physiological role of plant mitochondrial glutathione peroxidases is scarcely known. This study attempted to elucidate the role of a rice mitochondrial isoform（GPX1） in photosynthesis under normal growth and salinity conditions. GPX1 knockdown rice lines（GPX1s） were tested in absence and presence of 100 mm NaCl for 6 *** reduction of GPX1 s line under non-stressful conditions, compared with non-transformed（NT） plants occurred in parallel to increased H_2O_2 and decreased GSH contents. These changes occurred concurrently with photosynthesis impairment, particularly in Calvin cycle＇s reactions, since photochemical efficiency did not ***, GPX1 silencing and downstream molecular/metabolic changes modulated photosynthesis differentially. In contrast, salinity induced reduction in both phases of photosynthesis, which were more impaired in silenced *** changes were associated with root morphology alterations but not shoot growth. Both studied lines displayed increased GPX activity but H_2O_2 content did not change in response to salinity. Transformed plants exhibited lower photorespiration, water use efficiency and root growth, indicating that GPX1 could be important to salt tolerance. Growth reduction of GPX1 s line might be related to photosynthesis impairment, which in turn could have involved a cross talk mechanism between mitochondria and chloroplast originated from redox changes due to GPX1 deficiency.

Stability of highly supersaturated vanadium electrolyte solution and characterization of precipitated phases for vanadium redox flow battery

The vanadium redox flow battery(vRFB)has been receiving great attention in recent years as one of the most viable energy storage technologies for large-scale ***,higher concentrations of vanadium species are required in the H_(2)O-H_(2)SO_(4) electrolyte in order to improve the vRFB energy *** might lead to unwanted precipitation of vanadium compounds,whose nature has not been accurately characterized *** this purpose,this study reports the preparation ofⅤ^((Ⅱ)),Ⅴv^((Ⅲ)),Ⅴ^((Ⅳ))andⅤ^((Ⅴ))supersaturated solutions in a 5 m H_(2)SO_(4)-H_(2)O electrolyte by an electrolytic method,from the only vanadium sulfate compound commercially available(vOSO_(4)).The precipitates obtained by ageing of the stirred solutions are representative of the solids that may form in a vRFB operated with such supersaturated *** solid phases are identified using thermogravimetric analysis,X-ray diffraction and *** report that dissolvedⅤ^((Ⅱ)),Ⅴ^((Ⅲ))andⅤ^((Ⅳ))species precipitate as crystals of vSO_(4),v_(2)(SO_(4))3 and vOSO_(4) hydrates and not in their anhydrous form;conversely v^((Ⅴ))precipitates as an amorphous v_(2) O_(5) oxide partially *** measured hydration degrees(respectively 1.5,9,3 and 0.26 mol of H_(2)O per mol of compound)might significantly affect the overall engineering of vRFB operating with high vanadium concentrations.

Ternary supramolecular quantum-dot network flocculation for selective lectin detection

We present a versatile, tuneable, and selective nanoparficle-based lectin biosensor, based on flocculation of ternary supramolecular nanoparticle networks （NPN）, formed through the sequential binding of three building blocks. The three building blocks are ^-cyclodextrin-capped CdTe quantum dots, tetraethylene glycol-tethered mannose-adamantane cross-linkers （ADTEGman）, and the tetravalent lectin Concanavalin A （ConA）. The working principle of this selective sensor lies in the dual orthogonal molecular interactions of the linker, uniting adamantane-^-cyclodextrin and mannose-lectin interaction motifs, respectively. Only when the lectin is present, sequential binding takes place, leading to in situ self-organization of the sensor through the formation of ternary supramolecular networks. monitoring the loss of fluorescence signal of the quantum dots in solution, caused by controlled network formation and consecutive flocculation and sedimentation, leads to selective, qualitative, and quantitative lectin detection. Fluorescent sedimented networks can be observed by the naked eye or under Uv illumination for a lectin concentration of up to 10 8 m. Quantitative detection is possible at 100 min with a lower detection limit of approximately 5 × 10 ^-8 m.

FOLFIRI plus bevacizumab as a second-line therapy for metastatic intrahepatic cholangiocarcinoma

AIm:To evaluate the efficacy and tolerance of FOLFIRI plus bevacizumab treatment outcome as second-line treatment for metastatic intrahepatic ***:Thirteen consecutive patients with metastatic intrahepatic cholangiocarcinoma who were refractory tofirst-line therapy consisting of gemcitabine plus oxaliplatinbased first-line chemotherapy given intravenously via intra-arterial infusion were treated with FOLFIRI[irinotecan(180 mg/m2 *** 90 min)concurrently with folinic acid(400 mg/m2 *** 120 min)followed by fluorouracil(400 mg/m2 ***)then fluorouracil 2400 mg/m2 intravenous infusion over 46 h]and bevacizumab(5mg/kg)every 2 *** response was evaluated by computed tomography scan every 4 ***:The best tumor responses using response evaluation criteria in solid tumor criteria were:complete response for 1 patient,partial response for 4 patients,and stable disease for 6 patients after 6 mo of *** response rate was 38.4%(95%CI:12.5-89)and the disease control rate was 84.5%(95%CI:42-100).Seven deaths occurred at the time of analysis,progression free survival was 8 mo(95%CI:7-16),and median overall survival was 20 mo(95%CI:8-48).No grade 4toxic events were *** grade 3 hematological toxicities and one grade 3 digestive toxicity *** adaptive reduction in chemotherapy dosage was required in 2 patients due to hematological toxicity,and a delay in chemotherapy cycles was required for 3 ***:FOLFIRI plus bevacizumab combination treatment showed promising efficacy and safety as second-line treatment for metastatic intrahepatic cholangiocarcinoma after failure of the first-line treatment of gemcitabine plus oxaliplatin chemotherapy.
