This study was aimed at gaining further insight on the role of hydration in adsorption processes of biopolymer/adsorbate systems using complementary methods (electromagnetic interference (EMI) shielding, calorimetry, and solvent/vapour adsorption isotherms). Cellulose and starch-based materials were used as the adsorbents, whereas water (liquid and vapour), ethanol and p-nitrophenol (PNP) in aqueous solution were the adsorbate systems. The biopolymer/water systems had higher uptake capacity overall, where starch materials showed higher uptake capacity than cellulose among the various solvents. The secondary and tertiary structure of the biopolymers was a key factor affecting their uptake capacity, as evidenced by the enhanced adsorption properties of starch over cellulose, along with higher uptake of amylose (AM) versus amylopectin (AP) in starch biopolymers. EMI results also confirmed that AM starch had higher adsorption toward water than ethanol. The textural properties and surface chemistry of the biopolymers were probed using dye adsorption (PNP at pH 8.5) in aqueous solution that showed parallel trends with water vapour adsorption isotherms. Isothermal Titration Calorimetry (ITC) revealed that the heat of adsorption in AP differed from that of AM since the biopolymer tertiary structure governs the accessibility of biopolymer adsorption sites. The role of branching in AP and amorphous domains in AM/AP composites are inferred to play a key role in hydration-driven allosterism known for such biopolymer/water vapour adsorption processes.

In Bacillus thuringenesis(Bt) transgenic cotton, the cotton boll has the lowest insecticidal protein content when compared to the other organs. The present study investigated the effects of amino acid spray application at the peak flowering stage on the cotton boll Bt toxin concentration and yield formation. Boll protein synthesis and carbohydrate conversion were also studied to reveal the fundamental mechanism. Three treatments(i.e., CK, the untreated control;LA1, five amino acids;LA2, 21 amino acids) were applied to two Bt cultivars of G. hirsutum(i.e., the hybrid Sikang 3 and the conventional Sikang 1) in the cotton-growing seasons during 2017 and 2018. Amino acid spray application at the peak flowering stage resulted in an increase of 5.2–16.4% in the boll Bt protein concentration and an increase of 5.5–11.3%in the seed cotton yield, but there was no difference between the two amino acid treatments. In addition, amino acid applications led to increases in the amino acid content, soluble protein content, glutamate pyruvate transaminase(GPT)activity, glutamate oxaloacetate transaminase(GOT) activity, glucose content, fructose content and soluble acid invertase(SAI) activity. This study also found that Bt protein content, enhanced boll number and the weight of opened bolls were closely related to carbon and nitrogen metabolism. The Bt protein content had significant linear positive correlations with amino acid and soluble protein contents. Enhanced boll number had significant linear positive correlations with the GPT and GOT activities from 15–25 days after flowering(DAF). The weight of opened bolls from 55–65 DAF had a significant linear positive correlation with the SAI activity. These results indicate that the enhancement of boll protein synthesis and carbohydrate conversion by amino acid application resulted in a simultaneous increase in the boll Bt protein concentration and cotton lint yield.

Nanostructured LaFeO3 and substituted La1-xEuxFeO3 (x = 0.1, 0.15, and 0.2) perovskites were synthesized by sol-gel auto-combustion and their activities during the combustion of toluene were evaluated. The structure and physico-chemical properties of the perovskites were characterized by X-ray diffraction, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy, and BET surface area analyses. The compounds were crystallized as a perovskite phase with an orthorhombic structure. The mean particle size of the perovskites increased with an increase in europium loading while the specific surface area decreased. Characterization data confirmed that a total insertion of Eu into LaFeO3 occurred at x ≤ 0.15. However, Eu2O3 segregation occurred to some extent especially at x >0.15. The catalytic activity of the catalysts increased substantially with an increase in Eu substitution in the evaluated range.

【目的】寻找合适的蒸散模型及其敏感因子。【方法】以稻田生态系统为研究对象,根据江西省余江县试验区的净辐射、土壤热通量等小气候数据及相关农学观测数据,进行了不同时间尺度3种蒸散模型(Penman-Monteith、Priestley-Taylor和Hargreaves模型)拟合效果的比较以及蒸散对气象因子的敏感性分析,并研究了灌溉对潜在蒸散的影响。【结果】逐日尺度上,Penman-Monteith模型的拟合效果最优,其次为Priestley-Taylor模型,Hargreaves模型较差且低估了实际蒸散值;逐时尺度上,拟合效果较好的是Penman-Monteith模型和Priestley-Taylor模型。【结论】不同时间尺度,蒸散对各个气象因子的敏感性不同,逐日逐时蒸散对净辐射和水汽压较为敏感。不同灌溉处理,Penman-Monteith模型潜在蒸散变化显著,Priestley-Taylor模型变化不明显。

This study aimed to evaluate the antibacterial effects of ε-polylysine (ε-PL) and plant extracts of Thymus vulgaris, Zataria multiflora, and Salvia verticillata against the spoilage bacterium Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Pectobacterium carotovorum . Chemical compounds contained in the plants extracts were detected using HPLC and H NMR assays. To determine the antimicrobial effects, the minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) was calculated. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) was used to evaluate the mode of action of plant extracts and ε-polylysine on bacteria. Bacterial membrane electrical conductivity was also measured to investigate the effect of treatments on electrolyte leakage. Based on HPLC results, rosmarinic acid, caffeic acid, gallic acid, and chlorogenic acid were identified as major chemical ingredients of the extracts. Based on HPLC results, chlorogenic acid in the T. vulgaris, Z. multiflora, and S. verticillata extracts with the values of 3.209, 3.163, and 1.455 mg/L, respectively, was the dominant compound. Gallic acid, carvacrol, and p -cymene were detected in the H NMR assay as predominant secondary metabolites. The results of SEM revealed that plant extracts and ε-polylysine caused deformity of bacterial membranes. Minimum inhibitory concentration values for T. vulgaris, ε-polylysine, Z. multiflora, and S. verticillata were determined to be 0.78, 1.56, 6.25, and 25 mg/L;respectively. The electrical conductivity of bacterial cell membranes followed a dose-dependent trend. The highest electrical conductivity was observed in T. vulgaris treatment, followed by ε-polylysine and Z. multiflora .

Mechanisms associated with winter intraseasonal extreme sea ice extent in the Weddell Sea

Previous studies have shown evidence of atmospheric extratropical wave trains modulating sea ice area in the Weddell and Amundsen/Bellingshausen seas on intraseasonal time-scales(20–100 d). Here we investigate mechanisms relating intraseasonal extreme sea ice extent and Ekman layer dynamics with emphasis on the Weddell Sea. This study extends from 1989 to 2013 and focuses on the winter season. Wind stress τ is calculated with winds from the Climate Forecast System reanalysis(CFSR) to evaluate momentum transfer between the atmosphere and the Ekman layer. Lag-composites of the anomalies of Ekman transport and the Ekman pumping indicate that divergence of mass in the Ekman layer and upwelling lead the occurrence of extreme sea ice contraction on intraseasonal time-scales in the Weddell Sea. Opposite conditions(i.e., convergence of the mass and downwelling) lead extreme sea ice expansion on intraseasonal time-scales. This study suggests that the Ekman pumping resulting from the anomalous wind stress on intraseasonal time-scales can transport these warmer waters to the surface contributing to sea ice melting. Additionally, high resolution sea ice fraction and ocean currents obtained from satellite and in situ data are used to investigate in detail mechanisms associated with persistent extreme sea ice expansion and contraction on intraseasonal time-scales. These case studies reveal that atmospheric circumpolar waves on intraseasonal time-scales can induce contrasting anomalies of about ±20% in sea ice concentration at the Weddell and western Antarctica Peninsula margins within less than 30 d. This study shows that extreme anomalies in sea ice may lag between 5–25 d(1–5 pentads) the ocean-atmospheric forcing on intraseasonal time-scales.
