Bats play crucial ecosystem services as seed dispersers,pollinators,controllers of insects,and nutrient ***,there has not been a thorough global review evaluating these roles in bats across all biogeographical regions of the *** reviewed the literature published during the last two decades and identified 283 relevant studies:78 dealt with the control of potential insect pests by bats,80 related to the suppression of other arthropods,60 on the dispersal of native or endemic seeds,11 dealt with the dispersal of seeds of introduced plants,29 on the pollination of native or endemic plants,1 study on pollination of introduced plants,and 24 on the use of guano as *** literature search showed that queries combining the terms“seed dispersal,”“insectivorous bats,”“nectarivorous bats,”“use of guano,”and“ecosystem services”returned 577 studies,but half were experimental in *** found that the evaluation of ecosystem services by bats has been mostly conducted in the Neotropical and Palearctic *** detect differences across relevant studies,and to explain trends in the study of ecosystem services provided by bats,we performed generalized linear mixed models(GLMM)fitted with a Poisson distribution to analyze potential differences among sampling *** identified 409 bat species that provide ecosystem services,752 insect species consumed by bats and 549 plant species either dispersed or pollinated by *** review summarizes the importance of conserving bat populations and the ecological services they provide,which is especially important during the current pandemic.

Engineering T cells for immunotherapy of primary human hepatocellular carcinoma

Liver cancers, majority of which are primary hepatocellular carcinoma(HCC), continue to be on the rise in the world. Furthermore, due to the lack of effective treatments, liver cancer ranks the 4th most common cause of male cancer deaths. Novel therapies are urgently needed. Over the last few years,immunotherapies, especially the checkpoint blockades and adoptive cell therapies of engineered T cells,have demonstrated a great potential for treating malignant tumors including HCC. In this review, we summarize the current ongoing research of antigen-specific immunotherapies including cancer vaccines and adoptive cell therapies for HCC. We briefly discuss the HCC cancer vaccine and then focus on the antigen-specific T cells genetically engineered with the T cell receptor genes(TCRTs) and the chimeric antigen receptor genes(CARTs). We first review the current options of TCRTs and CARTs immunotherapies for HCC, and then analyze the factors and parameters that may help to improve the design of TCRTs and CARTs to enhance their antitumor efficacy and safety. Our goals are to render readers a panoramic view of the current stand of HCC immunotherapies and provide some strategies to design better TCRTs and CARTs to achieve more effective and durable antitumor effects.

India is a rapidly developing nation,so its adoption of sustainable building would have considerable social,environmental,and economic ***,process attributes that contribute to successful delivery(planning,design,construction and operation)of sustainable buildings in India are largely *** projects in India would benefit from a rigorous identification of these process attributes,which is the purpose of this *** research applies process mapping to study the delivery of Soundarya Decorator’s factory building in Chennai,India;a project which achieved advanced sustainability performance with no first cost *** these process maps,process attributes are identified and compared to those identified in a previously published study of Toyota’s South Campus facility in Torrance,*** attributes common to both projects include:demonstrating an early commitment to sustainability by key stakeholders;setting goals related to sustainability,not certification;continuously educating project stakeholders on sustainability;aligning sustainable features with business objectives;encouraging project team“buy-in”to sustainability goals;and investing design time to consider alternative sustainable solutions.

This article describes research needs for sustainable buildings as defi ned in a July 2009 National Science Foundationsponsored *** workshop brought together building researchers with researchers in the areas of distributed renewable energy and multifunctional materials to engage their expertise and identify overlapping research needs and *** overview of sustainable building design provided the broad context for *** overview was followed by focused presentations in building control systems,advanced building envelopes,and systems and process *** addition,presentations on distributed renewable energy and multi-functional materials supported the participants in outlining and generating research needs that connect the topic *** primary outcome from this part of the workshop was the identifi cation of key sustainable building research needs in:transformative measurements;passive strategies;regional solutions and living labs;systems integration;storage and cascades;adoption of international advances;and implementation and market *** needs,along with associated technical challenges and potential impacts,are described in this paper to guide sustainable building research.

Use of fly and bottom ashes from a thermoelectrical plant in the synthesis of geopolymers:Evaluation of reaction efficiency

The use of by-products as raw materials in the manufacturing of industrial products has risen in the last years because of environmental *** example is the use of coal ashes from thermalelectrical plants in the production of geopolymer–a green cement made by mixing aluminosilicate with alkaline *** this study,fly and bottom ashes from a thermal-electrical unit were used as sources of aluminosilicate in the synthesis of geopolymers.A mixture of sodium hydroxide(10 mol/L)and sodium silicate(SiO_(2)/Na_(2)O ratio of 2.2)was used as the alkaline *** type(fly or bottom ash)and content of the ash were the variables in the *** ashes were characterized by X-ray fluorescence(XRF),X-ray diffraction(DRX),particle size distribution(PSD),specific surface area(BET),and thermal analysis(DTA/TGA).The ash-based geopolymer samples were measured to obtain their compressive strength after *** evolution of the geopolymerization process was also assessed based on final alkali concentration *** results show that it is possible to obtain geopolymers using coal ashes as raw materials with high solid *** compressive strength for the bottom ash geopolymer after 90 days of curing is 35 *** low concentration of unreacted alkalis after curing(1.5×10^(-3)e 3.5×10^(-3)M)corresponds to high efficiency of the geopolymerization reaction.

In-vitro assessment for the control of Fusarium species using a lactic acid bacterium isolated from yellow pitahaya(Selenicereus megalanthus(K. Schum. Ex Vaupel Moran))

The fungistatic activity of a lactic acid bacterium, which had been isolated from yellow pitahaya cultures, against fungi associated with basal rot(Fusarium oxysporum and Fusarium fujikuroi) was measured in the present study. Its activity was assessed in three fractions: fermented(S1), metabolic products(S2), and biomass(S3), using two fermentation substrates: Man Rogosa Sharpe agar(MRS) and potato dextrose agar(PDA). The bacterium was molecularly identified as Lactobacillus plantarum. S3 reduced F. fujikuroi growth by 100% over 48 h of fermentation, which occurred during the stationary phase of bacterial growth. The three fractions' fungistatic activity against F. fujikuroi depended on the substrate employed. The fermentation kinetic parameters for L. plantarum indicated that its specific growth rate was 0.46 h^–1, with 93.63% substrate consumption, 0.045 kg kg^–1 cell yield, and 0.54 kg kg^–1 product yield. The kinetic parameters calculated will allow for bacteria production scaling. These in-vitro trials reveal L. plantarum's possible application as a biocontrol agent for diseases associated with Fusarium. However, further ex-vivo and in-vivo researches are required to demonstrate its behavior in crops.

Bendamustine and rituximab as frontline therapy in extranodal marginal zone lymphoma:a single-institution experience

Extranodal marginal zone lymphoma(EMZL)encompasses 70%of cases of marginal zone *** bendamustine and rituximab(BR)were derived from trials involving other indolent non-Hodgkin’s *** one trial has evaluated frontline BR prospectively in *** retrospective study reports outcomes among EMZL patients receiving frontline ***-five patients were included with a median age of 69 years(40–81).Five(20.0%)patients had stage Ⅰ/Ⅱ disease,and 20(80.0%)had stage Ⅲ/Ⅳ *** median number of cycles was 6.0(3.0–6.0).Maintenance rituximab was administered to 10(41.7%)*** response rate(ORR)was 100.0%(60.0%complete response,40.0%partial response).Medians of overall survival and progression-free survival were not *** estimated 2-year progression-free survival was 85.2%and overall survival was 100.0%.Four(16.6%)patients had infections related to treatment;3(12.0%)transformed to diffuse large B-cell lymphoma;5(20.8%)had a relapse or progression of EMZL;and 3(12.0%)died unrelated to *** is an efficacious and well-tolerated front-line regimen for EMZL with response data consistent with existing literature.

Acid-Functionalized Nanoparticles for Pretreatment of Wheat Straw

Perfluoroalkylsufonic (PFS) and alkylsufonic (AS) acid-functionalized magnetic nanoparticles were synthesized and characterized, then evaluated for their ability to hydrolyze hemicelluloses. The magnetic core was made of cobalt spinel ferrite and was coated with silica to protect it from oxidation. The silanol groups allowed surface chemical modification of the nanoparticles with the PFS and AS acid functionalities. Thermogravimetric analysis gave a total organic load of 12.6% and 32.5% (w/w) for AS and PFS nanoparticles, respectively. The surface sulfur content was calculated from XPS analysis as 1.37% and 1.93% for PFS and AS nanoparticles, respectively. Wheat straw samples were treated with the acid-functionalized nanoparticles at two different conditions: 80℃ for 24 h and 160℃ for 2 h. These experiments aimed to hydrolyze wheat straw hemicelluloses to soluble oligosaccharides. PFS nanoparticles solubilized significantly higher amounts of hemicelluloses (24.0% ± 1.1%) than their alkyl-sulfonic counterparts (9.1% ± 1.7%) at 80℃, whereas the hydrothermolysis control solubilized 7.7% ± 0.8% of the original hemicelluloses in the sample. At 160℃, PFS and AS nanoparticles gave significantly higher amounts of oligosaccharides (46.3% ± 0.4% and 45 ± 1.2%, respectively) than the control (35.0% ± 1.8%). The hemicelluloses conversion at 160?C reached 66.3% ± 0.9% using PFS nanoparticles and 61.0% ± 1.2% using AS nanoparticles compared with the control experiment, which solubilized 50.9% ± 1.7% of hemicelluloses in the biomass.
