Litterfall dynamics and soil carbon and nitrogen stocks in the Brazilian palm swamp ecosystems

Background: This study aimed to determine the litterfall production, accumulation, decomposition rate and nutrient stocks, and to estimate the soil carbon(C) and nitrogen(N) stocks in three palm swamp ecosystems with different land use intensities in the Southeast of ***: Three palm swamp ecosystems with different land use intensities were evaluated: Agua Doce(AD),conserved area;Capivara(CV), area with small agricultural practices;and Buriti Grosso(BG), area with an intensive land use. Produced and accumulated litterfall from the Cerrado areas surrounding the palm swamps were collected from october 2014 to September 2015, and the Ca, Mg, K, and P concentrations were determined in the dry and rainy seasons. Soil samples were collected in the surrounding Cerrado and within the palm swamps until 100 cm soil depth to determine bulk density and soil C and N contents and ***: Annual litterfall production in the Cerrado surrounding palm swamps was similar in AD(3.58 Mg·ha^-1·year^-1) and CV(3.79 Mg·ha^-1·year^-1), and was lower in BG(2.84 Mg·ha^-1·year^-1), and was more intense during the dry season. Furthermore, litterfall accumulation was higher in CV(7.12 Mg·ha^-1·year^-1) and BG(6.75 Mg·ha^-1·year^-1), culminating in lower decomposition rates. AD showed the highest decomposition rate(0.60) due to its vegetation structure and conservation. The macronutrient contents from the production and accumulated litterfall had a low influence of the land use, decreasing in the following order: Ca > K > Mg > P. Soils in CV and BG palm swamp areas showed higher values of C and N contents, due to the use of land for agricultural crops and cattle raising in an extensive(rangeland) system. Background:In Cerrado humid areas,veredas are considered as hygrophilous communities,marked by the presence of the Mauritia flexuosa palm tree emerging in the wetter *** in veredas ecosystems due to drought and changes in the water table,which represent important areas for biodiversity maintenance in the Brazilian cerrado,can lead to the emergence of new landscapes and *** that the veredas are changed in species composition due to anthropogenic factors,in this study,we evaluated the flora composition and described the current vegetation profile of two veredas under different disturbances levels that are located in the north of Minas Gerais State,***:Altogether,2,268 individuals of 91 species belonging to 36 families were *** results demonstrated that the studied veredas were floristically different in terms of the arboreous-shrubby species composition,richness,and *** the hygrophilous forest formations and open areas in the two veredas present typical species from these environments(same species with high importance values),the drought in the water table caused an expansion of Cerrado species in the open areas and in the hygrophilous ***,in the hygrophilous forest there was an increase in the abundance of species that occur in less saturated ***:our results demonstrate that the studied veredas are changing in species composition due to anthropogenic factors which leads to the drought of these formations(water balance effect).These anthropogenic effects cause a modification with the expansion and increase in the abundance of typical species of other areas of Cerrado and resistant to less saturated soils,leading to the veredas ***,future studies should investigate other veredas on a broader scale to detect changes in the water table that lead to a consequent change in vegetation *** this way,we will have support for the conscientious management and conservatio

Bimetallic reduced graphene oxide/zeolitic imidazolate framework hybrid aerogels for efficient heavy metals removal

Graphene oxide is a promising adsorption material. However, it has been difficult to recycle and separate graphene oxide in the solution. To alleviate this problem, graphene oxide was thermally reduced to produce porous hydrogel which was then functionalized with polydopamine. The functional groups act as not only adsorption sites but also nucleation sites for in situ crystallization of cobalt-doped zeolitic-imidazolate-framework-8 nano-adsorbents. The effects of cobalt-doping contents on the physicochemical and adsorption properties of the resulting aerogel were also evaluated by varying the cobalt concentration. For instance, the reduced graphene oxide-polydopamine/50cobalt-zeolitic-imidazolate-framework-8 aerogel exhibited a high surface area of 900 m(2)ot>g(-1) and maintained the structure in water after ten days. The assynthesized aerogels showed an ultrahigh adsorption capacity of 1217 +/- 24.35 mgot>g(-1) with a removal efficiency of > 99% of lead, as well as excellent adsorption performance toward other heavy metals, such as copper and cadmium with adsorption capacity of 1163 +/- 34.91 and 1059 +/- 31.77 mgot>g(-1), respectively. More importantly, the lead adsorption stabilized at 1023 +/- 20.5 mgot>g(-1) with a removal efficiency of > 80% after seven cycles, indicating their potential in heavy metal removal from industrial wastewater.

Effect of sewage sludge and sugarcane bagasse biochar on soil properties and sugar beet production

Recently, biochar has shown to be an alternative to waste disposal and a source of nutrients, acting as a soil amendment. The effects of two types of biochar on soil properties and sugar beet production as well as potential for carbon(C) sequestration were evaluated: biochar produced from sewage sludge(SB) and biochar produced from a 1:1 mixture of sewage sludge and sugarcane bagasse(MB). A greenhouse pot experiment was conducted using a sandy loam soil from the Brazilian savanna under treatments of MB applications at 2.5%, 5.0%, 7.5%, and 10.0%, SB application at 5.0%, and a conventional fertilization(CF) using lime and mineral fertilizers, with no fertilization as a control. After incubation for 45 d, seedlings were transplanted into each pot and cultivated for 55 d. Biochar characterization showed that pyrolysis reduced the biomass volume drastically, but concentrated the trace elements per unit of biochar weight. The MB treatments increased soil total C(by 27.8%) and pH(by 0.6), reduced the concentrations of nutrients, except for potassium(K), and chromium(Cr), and did not significantly alter lead(Pb) and cadmium(Cd) concentrations. Results of stable isotopes showed that all biochar treatments increased the total soil C stock and stability, suggesting a potential for application in C sequestration, and improved overall soil fertility. However, the biochar treatments also increased the concentrations of trace elements in the soil and plants. The sugar beet yields at 10.0% MB and 5.0% SB corresponded to 55%and 29% of the yield obtained in the CF treatment, respectively. These results may be due to biochar nutrients not being bioavailable when required by plants or to biochar nutrient adsorption.

Curvature Sensor Based on a Long-Period Grating in a Fiber Ring Resonator Interrogated by an oTDR

The proposed technique demonstrates a fiber ring resonator interrogated by an optical time domain reflectometer(oTDR),for intensity *** using this methodology,a cavity round trip time of 2.85ms was *** a proof of concept,a long-period grating was inserted in the resonant cavity operating as a curvature sensing device.A novel signal processing approach was outlined,regarding to the logarithmic behavior of the *** analyzing the experimental results,an increase in the measured sensitivities was obtained by increasing applied *** curvatures performed from 1.8 m^(-1) to 4.5 m^(-1),the sensitivity values ranged from 2.94 dB·km^(-1) to 5.15 dB·km^(-1).In its turn,the sensitivities obtained presented a linear behavior when studied as a function of the applied curvature,following a slope of 0.86×10-3 *** advantages of applying this technique were also discussed,demonstrating two similar fiber rings multiplexed in a series of configurations.

Self-care actions for the maintenance of the arteriovenous fistula:An integrative review

objective:To identify self-care actions for the maintenance of arteriovenous fistula of renal ***:An integrative review study was conducted and literature were searched in Medline/PubMed,Scopus,CINAHL LILACS,BDENF and SciELo Library databases using the descriptors chronic renal insufficiency,arteriovenous fistula,self-care,and *** inclusion criteria were that the documents be written in Portuguese,English,and Spanish,full text available,published in the last five years,and that they address the research *** articles,theses,dissertations,editorials of nonscientific journals,and research studies that did not follow the necessary methodological rigor were *** were analyzed with the IRAMUJTEQ ***:Fifteen articles were selected and comprised the final *** classes of self-care actions emerged from the text segments analysis and grouped into three categories:(1)Self-care actions that maintain the arteriovenous fistula;(2)Self-care actions for the prevention and the monitoring of complications with arteriovenous fistula;(3)Self-care actions directed at the perioperative period of arteriovenous fistula ***:The results allowed us to identify important care for the maintenance of arteriovenous fistula *** self-care actions identified in this study can guide a nursing care policy for implementation with protocols that help identify problems related to self-care actions and,thus,subsidize the development of actions aimed at the renal ***,more studies with high levels of evidence that identify self-care actions with arteriovenous fistula and the factors involved in its implementation are needed.

The Influence of Keratometry on Visual and Refractive outcomes after Myopic LASER <i>in Situ</i>Keratomileusis

To evaluate the effect of preoperative keratometry on visual and refractive outcomes after Myopic LASER in Situ Keratomileusis (LASIK) in eyes with preoperative spherical equivalent (SE) of -6.00D or less. Material and Methods: A retrospective study enrolling clinical records of 482 eyes of 275 patients with myopia who underwent LASIK between 2009 and 2016. Subjects were grouped according to the degree of preoperative mean keratometry (Km), into three groups: Group 1 (Flat Cornea): Km ≤ 42.00 diopters (D);Group 2: 42.00 46.00D;Group 3 (Steep Cornea): Km ≥ 46.00D. To evaluate the prognostic impact of keratometry in Myopic LASIK, we considered the results measured at 6 months postoperatively, including uncorrected distance visual acuity (UDVA), postoperative sphere, cylinder, SE and its variation. Results: The mean preoperative SE was -3.91 ± 1.54D, ranging between -0.88 and -6.00D. The percentage of eyes achieving a postoperative SE of ±0.50D was 39.5%, 31.8% and 26% in groups 1, 2 and 3 respectively. Moreover, in group 3, 14.3% of the eyes had a residual SE of -2.00D or greater, contrasting with the groups 1 and 2 with only 6% - 7%. These results were found to be statistically significant. Concerning UDVA, eyes achieving 20/25 or more were 81.5%, 81.8% and 71.5%, and 20/50 or less were 6.7%, 6.2% and 11.7% in groups 1, 2 and 3 respectively. Conclusions: Myopic eyes with steeper corneas seem to have greater tendency to undercorrection, also presenting worse visual outcomes.

Breast cancer is a heterogeneous and complex disease with different situations of threat to their patients, which can cause psychological discomfort, anxiety and a depressed state in women. The aim of this study was to analyze the performance of nursing to psychological repercussions on living with breast cancer. This is a descriptive and cross-sectional study with qualitative characteristics. It was conducted with professional nurses in Basic Health Units (UBS) in the municipality of Juazeiro do Norte-CE, Northeast of Brazil, located in the region of Cariri. The study began to be developed after the approval of the Research Ethics Committee, CAAE: 50809315.8. 0000.5624. Data collection occurred through a semi-structured interview. For the interpretation of the results, the technique of content analysis was used. The results showed that nurses realize that emotional support, care and assistance in coping, improve the construction of a good performance of the professional nurse. However, it is possible to realize the need for information and qualified assistance by multidisciplinary team to these patients and even their family members. It was identified as difficulty in assisting the denial of patient to start the treatment, but the facility is in the intimacy that the professional nurse can engage with the customer. It highlighted the care through dialogue and health education. And, finally, the nurse is aware of such importance of his/her role when supporting the patient. Thus, the improvement of professional assistance was evidenced as regards emotional support, reception, qualified listening, health education measures leading to self-knowledge, self-esteem and acceptance of the disease and the creation of bonds with the patients.
