Inhalation of Cananga odorata essential oil relieves anxiety behaviors in autism-like rats via regulation of serotonin and dopamine metabolism

Objective:Anxiety is one of the most common symptoms associated with autistic spectrum disorder.The essential oil of Cananga odorata(Lam.)Hook.f.&Thomson,usually known as ylang-ylang oil(YYO),is often used in aromatherapy as a mood-regulating agent,sedative,or hypotensive agent.In the present study,the effects and mechanisms of YYO in alleviating anxiety,social and cognitive behaviors in autism-like rats were investigated.Methods:The prenatal valproic acid(VPA)model was used to induce autism-like behaviors in offspring rats.The effectiveness of prenatal sodium valproate treatment(600 mg/kg)on offspring was shown by postnatal growth observation,and negative geotaxis,olfactory discrimination and Morris water maze(MWM)tests.Then three treatment groups were formed with varying exposure to atomized YYO to explore the effects of YYO on the anxiety,social and cognitive behaviors of the autistic-like offspring through the elevated plus-maze test,three-chamber social test,and MWM test.Finally,the monoamine neurotransmitters,including serotonin,dopamine and their metabolites,in the hippocampus and prefrontal cortex(PFC)of the rats were measured using a high-performance liquid chromatography.Results:Offspring of VPA exposure rats showed autism-like behaviors.In the VPA offspring,mediumdose YYO exposure significantly elevated the time and entries into the open arms in the elevated plusmaze test,while low-dose YYO exposure significantly enhanced the social interaction time with the stranger rat in session 1 of the three-chamber social test.VPA offspring treated with YYO exposure used less time to reach the platform in the navigation test of the MWM test.YYO exposure significantly elevated the metabolism of serotonin and dopamine in the PFC of VPA offspring.Conclusion:YYO exposure showed the effects in alleviating anxiety and improving cognitive and social abilities in the offspring of VPA exposure rats.The role of YYO was related to the regulation of the metabolism of serotonin and dopamine.

A Novel PLL Structure for Dynamic Stability Improvement of DFIG-based Wind Energy Generation Systems During Asymmetric LVRT

The dynamic coupling effect,which is introduced by the dual-sequence phase-locked loops(PLLs)used in doublyfed induction generator(DFIG)based wind energy generation systems(WEGSs)during asymmetric low voltage ride-through(LVRT)in weak grid,needs attention.In order to study this new dynamic coupling effect,an equivalent two-degree-of-freedom(2-DOF)spring damper particle model is used in this paper to develop a small-signal model for the dual-sequence PLLs.The dynamic interaction between the positive-sequence(PS)and negative-sequence(NS)PLLs is unveiled.Moreover,the impact of the dynamic coupling between the dual-sequence PLLs on the dynamic stability during the steady-state stage of an asymmetric fault is analyzed.The analysis results show that the dynamic coupling between the dual-sequence PLLs will cause drift in the frequency and damping for the PS and NS PLL modes.This will change the instability modal of the system and introduce the risk of dynamic instability.Hence,the effectiveness of existing control strategies for enhancing the dynamic stability will be decreased.Finally,a novel PLL structure is designed to improve the dynamic stability of the system during the steady-state stage of an asymmetric fault.The effectiveness of the proposed strategy is verified by simulations and experiments.

In this paper, we define and study polynomial entropy on an arbitrary subset and local measure theoretic polynomial entropy for any Borel probability measure on a compact metric space,and investigate the relation between local measure-theoretic polynomial entropy of Borel probability measures and polynomial entropy on an arbitrary subset. Also, we establish a variational principle for polynomial entropy on compact subsets in the context of amenable group actions.

Potential influence of overwintering benthic algae on water quality

Overwintering benthic algae not only directly impact drinking water safety, but also affect the algae recruitment in warm spring seasons. Thus, understanding the characteristics of overwintering benthic algae can provide scientific references for formulating preventative strategies of reasonable water resource. However, they have received less attention. In this study, the spatiotemporal variation of benthic algae and their harmful secondary metabolites were studied from autumn to summer in Qingcaosha Reservoir. Benthic algae(picophytobenthos accounting for 55.42%) had a high biomass during overwintering, and the groups of overwintering benthic algae included pico-Cyanobacteria, pico-Cryptomonas, pico-Chlorophyta, pico-Diatoms, Cyanobacteria, Chlorophyta, Cryptomonas and Diatoms, which were consistent with the planktonic algae species in warm seasons. In oligotrophic or mesotrophic water bodies, micronutrients of iron and manganese were key nutrient factors influencing the biomass of benthic algae. Furthermore, picophytobenthos were important potential contributors of harmful secondary metabolites. The content of microcystins, anatoxin-a, geosmin and 2-methylisoborneol in sediment were 15.75 μg/kg ·FW, 48.16 μg/kg ·FW, 3.91 ng/kg ·FW, and 11.76 ng/kg ·FW during winter, which had potential to be released into water bodies to impact water quality. These findings indicate that water quality monitoring programs need to consider sediment in winter as a potential source of toxins and preventative measures to prevent excessive proliferation of algae should be implemented in winter.

Calcineurin (CaN) is a unique calcium (Ca2+) and calmodulin (CaM)-dependent serine/threonine phosphatase that becomes activated in the presence of increased intracellular Ca2+ level. CaN then functions to dephosphorylate target substrates including various transcription factors, receptors, and channels. Once activated, the CaN signaling pathway participates in the development of multiple organs as well as the onset and progression of various diseases via regulation of different cellular processes. Here, we review current literature regarding the structural and functional properties of CaN, highlighting its crucial role in the development and pathogenesis of immune system disorders, neurodegenerative diseases, kidney disease, cardiomyopathy and cancer.

Chemical reductive technologies for the debromination of polybrominated diphenyl ethers: A review

Polybrominated diphenyl ethers(PBDEs)are widely used as brominated flame retardants,which had attracted amounts of attention due to their harmful characteristics of high toxicity,environmental persistence and potential bioaccumulation.Many chemical reductive debromination technologies have been developed for the debromination of PBDEs,including photolysis,photocatalysis,electrocatalysis,zero-valent metal reduction,chemically catalytic reduction and mechanochemical method.This review aims to provide information about the degradation thermodynamics and kinetics of PBDEs and summarize the degradation mechanisms in various systems.According to the comparative analysis,the rapid debromination to generate bromine-free products in an electron-transfer process,of which photocatalysis is a representative one,is found to be relatively difficult,because the degradation rate of PBDEs depended on the Br-rich phenyl ring with the lowest unoccupied molecular orbital(LUMO)localization.On the contrary,the complete debromination occurs easily in other systems with active hydrogen atoms as the main reactive species,such as chemically catalytic reduction systems.The review provides the knowledge on the chemical reductive technique of PBDEs,which would greatly help not only clarify the degradation mechanism but also design the more efficient system for the rapid and deep debromination of PBDEs in the future.

In this paper,the Peng-Robinson equation of state with dynamic boundary conditions is discussed,which considers the interactions with solid walls.At first,the model is introduced and the regularization method on the nonlinear term is adopted.Next,The scalar auxiliary variable(SAV)method in temporal and finite element method in spatial are used to handle the Peng-Robinson equation of state.Then,the energy dissipation law of the numerical method is obtained.Also,we acquire the convergence of the discrete SAV finite element method(FEM).Finally,a numerical example is provided to confirm the theoretical result.

Media convergence is a media change led by technological innovation.Applying media convergence technology to the study of clustering in Chinese medicine can significantly exploit the advantages of media fusion.Obtaining consistent and complementary information among multiple modalities through media convergence can provide technical support for clustering.This article presents an approach based on Media Convergence and Graph convolution Encoder Clustering(MCGEC)for traditonal Chinese medicine(TCM)clinical data.It feeds modal information and graph structure from media information into a multi-modal graph convolution encoder to obtain the media feature representation learnt from multiple modalities.MCGEC captures latent information from various modalities by fusion and optimises the feature representations and network architecture with learnt clustering labels.The experiment is conducted on real-world multimodal TCM clinical data,including information like images and text.MCGEC has improved clustering results compared to the generic single-modal clustering methods and the current more advanced multi-modal clustering methods.MCGEC applied to TCM clinical datasets can achieve better results.Integrating multimedia features into clustering algorithms offers significant benefits compared to single-modal clustering approaches that simply concatenate features from different modalities.It provides practical technical support for multi-modal clustering in the TCM field incorporating multimedia features.

Transition pathways in Cylinder-Gyroid interface

When two distinct ordered phases contact,the interface may exhibit rich and fascinating structures.Focusing on the Cylinder-Gyroid interface system,transition pathways connecting various interface morphologies are studied armed with the Landau–Brazovskii model.Specifically,minimum energy paths are obtained by computing transition states with the saddle dynamics.We present four primary transition pathways connecting different local minima,representing four different mechanisms of the formation of the Cylinder-Gyroid interface.The connection of Cylinder and Gyroid can be either direct or indirect via Fddd with three different orientations.Under different displacements,each of the four pathways may have the lowest energy.

Morphological evolution of the channel-shoal system in the South Channel of the Changjiang Estuary during 1958–2018:Causes and future trends

The stability of estuarine channel-shoal systems is important for port utilization,navigation maintenance,habitat protection and ecosystem service functions.This paper uses the South Channel of the Changjiang(Yangtze River)Estuary as a typical example to investigate the channel-shoal adjustment mechanism and its future trend.The combined approaches of bathymetric data analysis and process-based modeling(Delft3D)are applied.Quantitative analysis of morphological changes indicates that the South Channel experienced remarkable channel-shoal adjustment during 1958–2018.Periodic evolution was identified,including shoal migration,incision and emergence under natural conditions before the mid-1980s.Since then,fluvial sediment decline and local human intervention have interrupted the periodic processes.After 1986,as river sediment discharge started to decline,the South Channel converted to net erosion,and both the mid-channel shoal at the bifurcation node and the tail of the Ruifeng Shoal showed significant scour.Process-based hydrodynamic simulations revealed that the northern rotation of the mainstream downstream of Wusong triggered the erosion of the Ruifeng Shoal,while unordered sand mining at the shoal tail in approximately 2002 enhanced shoal shrinkage.In addition,the self-adjustment of the transverse section shape resulted in abnormal accretion in 2002–2007.Afterward,the South Channel underwent overall erosion as sediment discharge decreased to a low level(<150 Mt/a).Five stages of channel-shoal pattern adjustment and accretion/erosion status during the past 60years were defined,i.e.,the accretion stage(1958–1965),remarkable channel-shoal adjustment stage(1978–1986),slow erosion stage(1986–1997),shoal scour and shrinkage stage(1997–2007)and overall channel-shoal erosion stage(2007–2018).Model prediction of the evolutionary trend indicates that overall erosion within the South Channel is most likely to continue in 2015–2050.Further adjustment of the South Channel under extremely low sediment discharge may threaten
