Association between tobacco exposure and bladder cancer recurrence:A systematic review and meta-analysis

BACKGROUND However,the connection between smoking and the prognosis of patients with bladder cancer remains unclear.AIM To determine whether smoking is linked to the recurrence and progression of bladder cancer.METHODS As of July 20,2022,relevant English-language research was identified by searching PubMed,the Web of Science,and the Cochrane Library.We pooled the available data from the included studies using a random effects model.Subgroup analysis and sensitivity analysis were also conducted.RESULTS A total of 12 studies were included in this meta-analysis.The combined analysis revealed that tobacco exposure was associated with a significantly greater recurrence rate than nonsmoking status[odd ratios(OR)=1.76,95%CI:1.84-2.93],and the progression of bladder cancer was significantly greater in smokers than in nonsmokers(OR=1.21,95%CI:1.02-1.44).Stratified analysis further revealed that current smokers were more likely to experience relapse than never-smokers were(OR=1.85,95%CI:1.11-3.07).Former smokers also had a greater risk of relapse than did never-smokers(OR=1.73,95%CI:1.09-2.73).Subgroup analysis indicated that non-Caucasians may be more susceptible to bladder cancer recurrence than Caucasians are(OR=2.13,95%CI:1.74-2.61).CONCLUSION This meta-analysis revealed that tobacco exposure may be a significant risk factor for both the recurrence and progression of bladder cancer.

The safety of risers in hang-off states is a vital challenge in offshore oil and gas engineering.A new hang-off system installed on top of risers is proposed for improving the security of risers.This approach leads to a challenging problem:coupling the dynamics of risers with a new hang-off system combined with multiple structures and complex constraints.To accurately analyze the dynamic responses of the coupled system,a coupled dynamic model is established based on the Euler-Bernoulli beam-column theory and penalty function method.A comprehensive analysis method is proposed for coupled dynamic analysis by combining the finite element method and the Newmarkβmethod.An analysis program is also developed in MATLAB for dynamic simulation.The simulation results show that the dynamic performances of the risers at the top part are significantly improved by the new hang-off system,especially the novel design,which includes the centralizer and articulation joint.The bending moment and lateral deformation of the risers at the top part decrease,while the hang-off joint experiences a great bending moment at the bottom of the lateral restraint area which requires particular attention in design and application.The platform navigation speed range under the safety limits of risers expands with the new hang-off system in use.

The increasing popularity of endoscopic submucosal dissection(ESD)as a treatment for early gastric cancer has highlighted the importance of quality assessment in achieving curative resections.This article emphasizes the significance of evaluating ESD quality,not only for curative cases but also for non-curative ones.Postoperative assessment relies on the endoscopic curability(eCura)classification,but management strategies for eCuraC-1 tumour with a positive horizontal margin are unclear.Current research primarily focuses on comparing additional surgical procedures in high-risk patients,while studies specifically targeting eCuraC-1 patients are limited.Exploring management strategies and follow-up outcomes for such cases could provide valuable insights.Furthermore,the application of molecular imaging using near-infrared fluorescent tracers holds promise for precise tumour diagnosis and navigation,potentially impacting the management of early-stage gastric cancer patients.Advancing research in these areas is essential for improving the overall efficacy of endoscopic techniques and refining treatment indications.

Background:Hundreds of single-nucleotide polymorphism(SNP)sites have been found to be potential genetic markers of type 2 diabetes mellitus(T2DM).However,SNPs related to T2DM in minipigs have been less reported.This study aimed to screen the T2DM-susceptible candidate SNP loci in Bama minipigs so as to improve the success rate of the minipig T2DM model.Methods:The genomic DNAs of three Bama minipigs with T2DM,six sibling lowsusceptibility minipigs with T2DM,and three normal control minipigs were compared by whole-genome sequencing.The T2DM Bama minipig-specific loci were obtained,and their functions were annotated.Meanwhile,the Biomart software was used to perform homology alignment with T2DM-related loci obtained from the human genome-wide association study to screen candidate SNP markers for T2DM in Bama miniature pigs.Results:Whole-genome resequencing detected 6960 specific loci in the minipigs with T2DM,and 13 loci corresponding to 9 diabetes-related genes were selected.Further,a set of 122 specific loci in 69 orthologous genes of human T2DM candidate genes were obtained in the pigs.Collectively,a batch of T2DM-susceptible candidate SNP markers in Bama minipigs,covering 16 genes and 135 loci,was established.Conclusions:Whole-genome sequencing and comparative genomics analysis of the orthologous genes in pigs that corresponded to the human T2DM-related variant loci successfully screened out T2DM-susceptible candidate markers in Bama miniature pigs.Using these loci to predict the susceptibility of the pigs before constructing an animal model of T2DM may help to establish an ideal animal model.

Background:Currently,increasing attention is being paid to the important role of intestinal microbiome in diabetes.However,few studies have evaluated the characteristics of gut microbiome in diabetic miniature pigs,despite it being a good model animal for assessing diabetes.Methods:In this study,a mini-pig diabetes model(DM)was established by 9-month high-fat diet(HFD)combined with lowdose streptozotocin,while the animals fed standard chow diet constituted the control group.16S ribosomal RNA(rRNA)gene sequencing was performed to assess the characteristics of the intestinal microbiome in diabetic mini-pigs.Results:The results showed that microbial structure in diabetic mini-pigs was altered,reflected by increases in levels of Coprococcus_3 and Clostridium_sensu_stricto_1,which were positively correlated with diabetes,and decreases in levels of the bac-teria Rikenellaceae,Clostridiales_vadinBB60_group,and Bacteroidales_RF16_group,which were inversely correlated with blood glucose and insulin resistance.Moreover,PICRUSt-predicted pathways related to the glycolysis and Entner-Doudoroff superpathway,enterobactin biosynthesis,and the L-tryptophan biosynthesis were significantly elevated in the DM group.Conclusion:These results reveal the composition and predictive functions of the intestinal microbiome in the mini-pig diabetes model,further verifying the relationship between HFD,gut microbiome,and diabetes,and providing novel insights into the application of the mini-pig diabetes model in gut microbiome research.

Background:The ossification mechanism of the temporomandibular joint(TMJ)condyle remains unclear in human embryo.The size and structure of TMJ,shape of articular disc and the characteristics of omnivorous chewing in the pig are similar to those of humans.The pig is an ideal animal for studying the mechanism of ossification of the TMJ condyle during the embryonic period.Method:In a previous study by our group,it was found that there was no condylar ossification on embryonic day(E)45,but the ossification of condyle occurred between E75 and E90.In this study,a total of 12 miniature pig embryos on E45 and E85 were used.Six embryos were used for tissue sections(3 in each group).The remaining six embryos were used for transcriptomic and proteomic studies to find differential genes and proteins.The differentially expressed genes in transcriptome and proteomic analysis were verified by QPCR.Results:In total,1592 differential genes comprising 1086 up-regulated genes and 506 down-regulated genes were screened for fold changes of≥2 to≤0.5 between E45 and E85.In the total of 4613 proteins detected by proteomic analysis,there were 419 differential proteins including 313 up-regulated proteins and 106 down-regulated proteins screened for fold changes of≥2 to≤0.5 between E45 and E85.A total of 36 differential genes differing in both transcriptome and proteome analysis were found.QPCR analysis showed that 14 of 15 selected genes were consistent with transcriptome analysis.Conclusion:Condylar transcriptome and proteomic analysis during the development of TMJ in miniature pigs revealed the regulatory genes/proteins of condylar ossification.

Objective:Tumor-associated macrophages(TAMs)of the M2 phenotype are frequently associated with cancer progression.Invasive cancer cells undergoing epithelial-mesenchymal transition(EMT)have a selective advantage as TAM activators.Cyclin D1b is a highly oncogenic splice variant of cyclin D1.We previously reported that cyclin D1b enhances the invasiveness of breast cancer cells by inducing EMT.However,the role of cyclin D1b in inducing macrophage differentiation toward tumor-associated macrophage-like cells remains unknown.This study aimed to explore the relationship between breast cancer cells overexpressing cyclin Dlb and TAMs.Methods:Mouse breast cancer 4T1 cells were transfected with cyclin D1b variant and co-cultured with macrophage cells in a Transwell coculture system.The expression of characteristic cytokines in differentiated macrophages was detected using qRT-PCR,ELISA and zymography assay.Tumor-associated macrophage distribution in a transplanted tumor was detected by immunofluorescence staining.The proliferation and migration ability of breast cancer cells was detected using the cell counting kit-8(CCK-8)assay,wound healing assay,Transwell invasion assay,and lung metastasis assay.Expression levels of mRNAs were detected by qRT-PCR.Protein expression levels were detected by Western blotting.The integrated analyses of The Cancer Genome Atlas(TCGA)datasets and bioinformatics methods were adopted to discover gene expression,gene coexpression,and overall survival in patients with breast cancer.Results:After co-culture with breast cancer cells overexpressing cyclin D1b,RAW264.7 macrophages were differentiated into an M2 phenotype.Moreover,differentiated M2-like macrophages promoted the proliferation and migration of breast cancer cells in turn.Notably,these macrophages facilitated the migration of breast cancer cells in vivo.Further investigations indicated that differentiated M2-like macrophages induced EMT of breast cancer cells accompanied with upregulation of TGF-β1 and integrinβ3 expression.Conclusion:Br

Using the U-Pb LA-ICP-MS analysis technique we analyzed geochronological features of detrital zircons from Devonian and Ordovician coarse sandstone in southern Jiangxi Province,northern Cathaysia Block.Abundant ancient crustal information was obtained.The 350 groups of U-Pb age center on five ranges:2600-2300 Ma(peak at 2470 Ma),1100-900 Ma(peak at 980 Ma),900-700 Ma(peak at 800 Ma),650-520 Ma(peak at 600 Ma) and 450-400 Ma(peak at 440 Ma).We also found a detrital zircon of ~3.5 Ga.This is the oldest age in northern Cathaysia Block obtained so far.From the analysis we concluded that:(1) the 2600-2300 Ma period,characterized by a global continent-building,records late Neoarchean magmatism that did not occur in the neighboring area of Cathaysia;(2) the marked peak at 1100-900 Ma corresponds with the assembly time of the Neoproterozoic supercontinent,Rodinia,suggesting that the Cathaysia Block was once a part of Rodinia,and numerous euhedral zircons with similar ages likely resulted from the Grenville event;(3) the peak at 900-700 Ma corresponds to the breakup of Rodinia,as evidenced by wide occurrence of Neoproterozoic granite,basic dyke swarms and continental rift-type deposition;(4) the 650-520 Ma period is the typical time of the Pan-African event,but as yet no associated magmatic rock has been reported in this area;and(5) the peak at 450-400 Ma,representing the early Paleozoic orogeny,was recorded in various igneous rocks.Abundant Silurian-Lower Devonian granitic plutons,orthogneisses and their zircon U-Pb dating ages(450-400 Ma) are important evidence of an early Paleozoic orogenic event.Geological data support the interpretation of an Early Paleozoic tectonic heat event in Cathaysia,which was likely to be caused by intracontinental collision.

This article reviews the research progress of rehabilitation treatment and nursing care of patients with neurogenic bladder after spinal cord injury,in order to provide reference for the rehabilitation treatment and nursing care of patients.We reviewed recent medical literature on patients with neurogenic bladder,focusing on neurogenic bladder caused by spinal cord injury.We analyzed 30 recent of publications in patients with neurogenic bladder after spinal cord injury,in addition to reviewing and evaluating the commonly used rehabilitation nursing methods for neurogenic bladder.Psychological counseling is a vital aspect which cannot be neglected in the process of neurogenic bladder rehabilitation.Hitherto,the commonly used drug and surgical treatments may have negatively impacted the mental health of patients in varying degrees.However,in clinical practice,applying intermittent catheterization in patients who have neurogenic bladder with spinal cord injury may help improve patients’life quality,mitigate psychological burden,and reduce negative emotions.
