Integrative multi-omics approaches reveal that Asian cultivated rice domestication influences its symbiotic relationship with arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi

Potential changes in the symbiotic relationship between rice(Oryza sativa)and microorganisms have occurred during the domestication of Asian cultivated rice(O.sativa)from common wild rice(Oryza rufipogon)and in response to global climate change,along with evolving adaptations to the environment.The potential genes may express differently or dominate the symbiotic relationships between arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi(AMF)and plants,which may be beneficial to rice breeding.To date,research on this important topic has been limited.In this study,we aimed to examine the symbiotic relationships of Asian common wild and cultivated rice species with AMF.By conducting a comparative metagenomic analysis of the rhizospheres of wild and cultivated rice species,we identified differences in Rhizophagus intraradices-related genes associated with wild and cultivated rice,as well as functional genes of AMF.Furthermore,we obtained root-related genes associated with AMF from transcriptome data of rice roots.Our results collectively suggest that R.intraradices-related genes in the rhizosphere of wild rice may be more conducive to its colonization.Additionally,bacteria from the Nitrosomonadaceae and Nitrospiraceae families identified in the rhizosphere of wild rice exhibited positive correlations with R.intraradices-related genes with protein identifiers 1480749 and1871253,which may indicate that nitrobacteria can enhance the functions of R.intraradices in association with wild rice.Next,in a case study using comparative transcriptome analysis of root samples obtained from R.intraradices-inoculated wild and cultivated rice plants,we found significantly higher expression levels of the strigolactone pathway-related genes DWARF3(D3)and DWARF14(D14)in R.intraradices-inoculated common wild rice than in R.intraradices-inoculated cultivated rice.This study provides a theoretical basis for identifying the effects of domestication on mycorrhizal symbiosis-related genes,which could be promoted in wild rice in the future.

Predictive value of positive lymph node ratio in patients with locally advanced gastric remnant cancer

BACKGROUND Traditional lymph node stage(N stage)has limitations in advanced gastric remnant cancer(GRC)patients;therefore,establishing a new predictive stage is necessary.AIM To explore the predictive value of positive lymph node ratio(LNR)according to clinicopathological characteristics and prognosis of locally advanced GRC.METHODS Seventy-four patients who underwent radical gastrectomy and lymphadenectomy for locally advanced GRC were retrospectively reviewed.The relationship between LNR and clinicopathological characteristics was analyzed.The survival analysis was performed using Kaplan-Meier survival curves and Cox regression model.RESULTS Number of metastatic LNs,tumor diameter,depth of tumor invasion,Borrmann type,serum tumor biomarkers,and tumor-node-metastasis(TNM)stage were correlated with LNR stage and N stage.Univariate analysis revealed that the factors affecting survival included tumor diameter,anemia,serum tumor biomarkers,vascular or neural invasion,combined resection,LNR stage,N stage,and TNM stage(all P<0.05).The median survival time for those with LNR0,LNR1,LNR2 and LNR3 stage were 61,31,23 and 17 mo,respectively,and the differences were significant(P=0.000).Anemia,tumor biomarkers and LNR stage were independent prognostic factors for survival in multivariable analysis(all P<0.05).CONCLUSION The new LNR stage is uniquely based on number of metastatic LNs,with significant prognostic value for locally advanced GRC,and could better differentiate overall survival,compared with N stage.

Removal Effect of Precipitation on Atmospheric Particulate Matter (PM_(2.5) ) in Bengbu City

Based on the monitoring data of PM_(2.5) concentration in Bengbu Environmental Monitoring Station and precipitation observation data of Bengbu National Meteorological Observation Station from 2016 to 2019, the influence of precipitation on PM_(2.5) mass concentration in Bengbu City was analyzed. The results show that precipitation had a washing and removal effect on PM_(2.5) in the air, and the removal effect was related to precipitation level, precipitation intensity, precipitation duration and PM_(2.5) concentration. The removal effect of precipitation on PM_(2.5) increased with the increase of precipitation level, and the seasonal difference was obvious. Precipitation intensity was positively correlated with the removal effect of PM_(2.5) , but the average removal rate began to decline when precipitation intensity exceeded 10 mm. With the increase of precipitation intensity, the proportion of positive removal showed an overall upward trend, but there was a low-value area as precipitation intensity was 3-10 mm. Precipitation duration was also positively correlated with the removal effect of PM_(2.5) , and there was a low-value area when precipitation duration was 10-15 h. When PM_(2.5) concentration was low before the precipitation process began, the removal effect was not good, and the average removal rate was negative. As PM_(2.5) concentration was high before the precipitation process started, the removal effect was obvious.

Changing Characteristics of Comfort Index of Human Body in Bengbu City in the Past 40 Years under the Background of Climate Change

Based on the daily meteorological data of Bengbu City during 1981-2020,the changing characteristics of three elements needed for the calculation of the comfort index of human body(CIHB)were discussed,and daily CIHB was classified and discussed.The results show that from 1981 to 2020,annual average temperature tended to increase significantly.Annual average wind speed and relative humidity showed a decreasing trend before 2011 but an increasing trend after 2011.The duration of the four seasons in Bengbu City mainly rose in spring,reduced in winter,declined first and then increased in summer,and rose first and then decreased in autumn.As CIHB was at grades 1 and 9(the most uncomfortable),the three factors had different effects on them.For cold weather,the influence of relative humidity and wind speed on CIHB can not be ignored besides temperature.In hot weather,the influence of temperature was dominant,and the change of annual average temperature could well correspond to the change in the number of very hot days.In the context of climate warming,the number of cold days tended to decline generally,but it was larger in the years with fewer very cold days.Under the background of climate warming,there was no obvious change in the number of days of the overall comfort of human body.The number of hot days was closely related to the duration of summer,and the number of days of grade 8 rose significantly in the years with an increase in the duration of summer.

Dietary yeast extract prevents alcoholic liver disease in mice via correcting gut dysbiosis and improving intestinal barrier function

Alcoholic liver disease (ALD) is one of the major global public health problems. Yeast extract (YE)， a product prepared from yeast， has been proven to have antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. However， the potential role of YE in the prevention of ALD remains unclear. The present study aimed to investigate the protective effects of YE on ALD and explore the underlying mechanism based on gut microbiota. The result showed that YE supplementation significantly ameliorated chronic alcohol exposure-induced liver injury in mice. In addition， YE counteracted alcohol-induced gut dysbiosis， intestinal barrier dysfunction， lipopolysaccharide (LPS) leakage-induced inflammatory response in the liver. Moreover， microbiota depletion by a broad-spectrum antibiotic was sufficient to block the protective effect of YE on ALD， indicating the contribution of gut dysbiosis modulation to the hepatoprotective role of YE. Furthermore， we demonstrated the causal relationship between gut microbiota and hepatoprotective effects of YE with the fecal microbiota transplantation (FMT) experiment. Compared with the ALD-FMT mice， gut dysbiosis， intestinal barrier dysfunction， LPS/TLR4 signaling pathway activation， and liver inflammatory response were significantly improved in the YE-FMT mice. Together， our findings highlight that dietary YE protects against ALD through gut dysbiosis correction.

AIM:To investigate the clinical features of the ocular surface in patients with different degrees of myopia.METHODS:A cross-sectional study was conducted involving 122 participants with myopia in Beijing Tongren Hospital from February to June,2023.After completing the Ocular Surface Disease Index(OSDI)score scale,measurements were taken for refraction,biometric parameters and ocular surface parameters.The prevalence,severity and related parameters of the dry eye among different groups based on axial length(AL)were compared.Correlation analysis was performed between ocular surface parameters and refraction/biometric measurement parameters.RESULTS:Statistically significant differences were observed in refractive error,corneal thickness,anterior chamber depth,and subfoveal choroidal thickness among the groups(all P<0.05).With the increase in AL,the incidence and severity of dry eye increased significantly(P<0.05).Moreover,the tear film break-up time(BUT)shortened(P<0.05),and the corneal fluorescein staining(CFS)points increased significantly(P<0.05).OSDI scores were positively correlated with AL and spherical equivalent(SE;both P<0.05);BUT was negatively correlated with AL,SE,and corneal astigmatism(AST;all P<0.05);Schirmer I test(SIT)results were negatively correlated with AL and SE(both P<0.05).CONCLUSION:AL elongation is a risk factor for dry eye onset in myopic participants.The longer the AL,the more severe the dry eye is,with the increased CFS spots and tear film instability.Additionally,SE and AST exhibit negative correlations with dry eye symptom scores and ocular surface parameters.

Hybrid rice(Oryza sativa)generally outperforms its inbred parents in yield and stress tolerance,a phenomenon termed heterosis,but the underlying mechanism is not completely understood.Here,we combined transcriptome,proteome,physiological,and heterosis analyses to examine the salt response of super hybrid rice Chaoyou1000(CY1000).In addition to surpassing the mean values for its two parents(mid-parent heterosis),CY1000 exhibited a higher reactive oxygen species scavenging ability than both its parents(over-parent heterosis or heterobeltiosis).Nonadditive expression and allele-specific gene expression assays showed that the glutathione S-transferase gene OsGSTU26 and the amino acid transporter gene OsAAT30 may have major roles in heterosis for salt tolerance,acting in an overdominant fashion in CY1000.Furthermore,we identified OsWRKY72 as a common transcription factor that binds and regulates OsGSTU26 and OsAAT30.The salt-sensitive phenotypes were associated with the OsWRKY72^(paternal)genotype or the OsAAT30^(maternal)genotype in core rice germplasm varieties.OsWRKY72^(paternal)specifically repressed the expression of OsGSTU26 under salt stress,leading to salinity sensitivity,while OsWRKY72^(maternal)specifically repressed OsAAT30,resulting in salinity tolerance.These results suggest that the OsWRKY72-OsAAT30/OsGSTU26 module may play an important role in heterosis for salt tolerance in an overdominant fashion in CY1000 hybrid rice,providing valuable clues to elucidate the mechanism of heterosis for salinity tolerance in hybrid rice.

Exploiting sound for emerging applications of extracellular vesicles

Extracellular vesicles are nano-to micro-scale,membrane-bound particles released by cells into extracellular space,and act as carriers of biomarkers and therapeutics,holding promising potential in translational medicine.However,the challenges remain in handling and detecting extracellular vesicles for disease diagnosis as well as exploring their therapeutic capability for disease treatment.Here,we review the recent engineering and technology advances by leveraging the power of sound waves to address the challenges in diagnostic and therapeutic applications of extracellular vesicles and biomimetic nanovesicles.We first introduce the fundamental principles of sound waves for understanding different acoustic-assisted extracellular vesicle technologies.We discuss the acoustic-assisted diagnostic methods including the purification,manipulation,biosensing,and bioimaging of extracellular vesicles.Then,we summarize the recent advances in acoustically enhanced therapeutics using extracellular vesicles and biomimetic nanovesicles.Finally,we provide perspectives into current challenges and future clinical applications of the promising extracellular vesicles and biomimetic nanovesicles powered by sound.

Inhibition of Defect-Induced Ice Nucleation, Propagation, and Adhesion by Bioinspired Self-Healing Anti-Icing Coatings

Anti-icing coatings on outdoor infrastructures inevitably suffer from mechanical injuries in numerous icing scenarios such as hailstorms,sandstorms,impacts of foreign objects,and icing–deicing cycles.Herein,the mechanisms of surface-defect-induced icing are clarified.At the defects,water molecules exhibit stronger adsorption and the heat transfer rate increases,accelerating the condensation of water vapor as well as ice nucleation and propagation.Moreover,the ice–defect interlocking structure increases the ice adhesion strength.Thus,a self-healing(at−20℃)antifreeze-protein(AFP)-inspired anti-icing coating is developed.The coating is based on a design that mimics the ice-binding and non-ice-binding sites in AFPs.It enables the coating to markedly inhibit ice nucleation(nucleation temperature<−29.4℃),prevent ice propagation(propagation rate<0.00048 cm^(2)/s),and reduce ice adhesion on the surface(adhesion strength<38.9 kPa).More importantly,the coating can also autonomously self-heal at−20℃,as a result of multiple dynamic bonds in its structure,to inhibit defect-induced icing processes.The healed coating sustains high anti-icing and deicing performance even under various extreme conditions.This work reveals the in-depth mechanism of defect-induced ice formation as well as adhesion,and proposes a self-healing anti-icing coating for outdoor infrastructures.

Data-driven rational design of single-atom materials for hydrogen evolution and sensing

Herein we proposed a data-driven high-throughput principle to screen high-performance single-atom materials for hydrogen evolution reaction(HER)and hydrogen sensing by combing the theoretical computations and a topology-based multi-scale convolution kernel machine learning algorithm.After the rational training by 25 groups of data and prediction of all 168 groups of single-atom materials for HER and sensing,respectively,a high prediction accuracy(>0.931 R^(2) score)was achieved by our model.Results show that the promising HER catalysts include Pt atoms in C_(4) and Sc atoms in C_(1)N_(3) coordination environment.Moreover,Y atoms in C_(4) coordination environment and Cd atoms in C_(2)N_(2)-ortho coordination environment were predicted with great potential as hydrogen sensing materials.This method provides a way to accelerate the discovery of innovative materials by avoiding the time-consuming empirical principles in experiments.
