The role of strain in oxygen evolution reaction

The oxygen evolution reaction(OER)is a crucial step in metal-air batteries and water splitting technologies,playing a significant role in the efficiency and achievable heights of these two technologies.However,the OER is a four-step,four-electron reaction,and its slow kinetics result in high overpotentials,posing a challenge.To address this issue,numerous strategies involving modified catalysts have been proposed and proven to be highly efficient.In these strategies,the introduction of strain has been widely reported because it is generally believed to effectively regulate the electronic structure of metal sites and alter the adsorption energy of catalyst surfaces with reaction intermediates.However,strain has many other effects that are not well known,making it an important yet unexplored area.Based on this,this review provides a detailed introduction to the various roles of strain in OER.To better explain these roles,the review also presents the definition of strain and elucidates the potential mechanisms of strain in OER based on the d-band center theory and adsorption volcano plot.Additionally,the review showcases various ways of introducing strain in OER through examples reported in the latest literature,aiming to provide a comprehensive perspective for the development of strain engineering.Finally,the review analyzes the appropriate proportion of strain introduction,compares compressive and tensile strain,and examines the impact of strain on stability.And the review offers prospects for future research directions in this emerging field.

Internal electric field modulation by copper vacancy concentration of cuprous sulfide nanosheets for enhanced selective CO_(2) photoreduction

Although the internal electric field(IEF)of photocatalysts is acknowledged as a potent driving force for photocharge separation,modulating the IEF intensity to achieve enhanced photocatalytic performances remains a challenge.Herein,cuprous sulfide nanosheets with different Cu vacancy concentration were employed to study IEF modulation and corresponding direct charge transfer.Among the samples,Cu_(1.8)S nanosheets possessed intensified IEF intensity compared with those of Cu_(2)S and Cu_(1.95)S nanosheets,suggesting that an enhanced IEF intensity could be achieved by introducing more Cu vacancies.This intensified IEF of Cu_(1.8)S nanosheets induced numerous photogenerated electrons to migrate to its surface,and the dissociative electrons were then captured by Cu vacancies,resulting in efficient charge separation spatially.In addition,the Cu vacancies on Cu_(1.8)S nanosheets accumulated electrons as active sites to lower the energy barrier of rate-determining step of CO_(2)photoreduction,leading to the selective conversion of CO_(2)to CO.Herein,the manipulation of IEF intensity through Cu vacancy concentration regulation of cuprous sulfide photocatalysts for efficient charge separation has been discussed,providing a scientific strategy to rationally improve photocata lytic performances for solar energy conversion.

针对海上油田油井解堵面临的常规酸化残酸返排和螯合中性解堵体系在部分井况实施效果不理想这2个问题,采用弱酸弱碱盐、电离可逆平衡的思路,研发了一种高pH值强溶型直排酸解堵体系。综合性能表明,体系原液pH≥3,残酸pH≥5,同时具有常规酸液溶蚀性能,可实现对钙垢、铁垢和黏土垢的溶解,同时还具有优良的破乳、缓速、稳铁以及动态驱替性能。体系在海上油田开展了3井次试验应用,增产倍比达1.38~2.17倍,可以达到常规酸化的措施效果,返排液pH值在5~7,返排液对流程无影响,具有较好的推广应用价值。

This study investigated the process of PCV2-induced apoptosis and the effect of PCV2 inoculation on calcium homeostasis in piglet lymphocytes in vitro.PCV2-inoculated lymphocytes exhibited chromatin condensation,chromatin segregation,the appearance of membrane-enclosed apoptotic bodies,and DNA fragmentation.Moreover,the proportion of apoptotic cells increased significantly in PCV2- inoculated lymphocytes compared with controls.These results demonstrate that PCV2 induces lymphocyte apoptosis. Some evidence suggests that an alteration in the intracellular free Ca concentration([Ca]i) could cause apoptosis.We measured elevated[Ca]i in PCV2- inoculated lymphocytes for 12 h or 24 h compared with controls.Our results support that PCV2-induced apoptosis may be relative to[Ca]i.In addition, calmodulin(CaM) was increased in PCV2- inoculated lymphocytes for 12 h compared with controls.The amount of CaM-dependent protein kinase II(CaMKII) did not change with PCV2 inoculation.We infer that the increased[Ca]i can bind CaM protein,but functions independently of CaMKII.Inositol 1,4,5-trisphosphate receptor(IP3R)-1 mRNA expression increased with PCV2 inoculation,whereas plasma Ca-ATP4 mRNA expression decreased.A decreased Ca-ATP4 level may inhibit Ca efflux,and the increased IP3R-1 may trigger Ca release from the endoplasmic reticulum.Both of these changes may contribute to increased[Ca]i.

Oroxyloside protects against dextran sulfate sodium-induced colitis by inhibiting ER stress via PPARγ activation

Ulcerative colitis (UC), a prevalent form of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), may result from immune system dysfunction, leading to the sustained overproduction of reactive oxygen species (ROS) and subsequent cellular oxidative stress damage. Recent studies have identified both peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor-γ (PPARγ) and endoplasmic reticulum (ER) stress as critical targets for the treatment of IBD. Oroxyloside (C22H20O11), derived from the root of Scutellaria baicalensis Georgi, has traditionally been used in treating inflammatory diseases. In this study, we investigated the molecular mechanisms by which oroxyloside mitigates dextran sulfate sodium (DSS)-induced colitis. We examined the effects of oroxyloside on ROS-mediated ER stress in colitis, including the protein expressions of GRP78, p-PERK, p-eIF2α, ATF4, and CHOP, which are associated with ER stress. The beneficial impact of oroxyloside was reversed by the PPARγ antagonist GW9662 (1 mg·kg^(−1), i.v.) in vivo. Furthermore, oroxyloside decreased pro-inflammatory cytokines and ROS production in both bone marrow-derived macrophages (BMDM) and the mouse macrophage cell line RAW 264.7. However, PPARγ siRNA transfection blocked the anti-inflammatory effect of oroxyloside and even abolished ROS generation and ER stress activation inhibited by oroxyloside in vitro. In conclusion, our study demonstrates that oroxyloside ameliorates DSS-induced colitis by inhibiting ER stress via PPARγ activation, suggesting that oroxyloside might be a promising effective agent for IBD.

Humans can perceive our complex world through multi-sensory fusion.Under limited visual conditions,people can sense a variety of tactile signals to identify objects accurately and rapidly.However,replicating this unique capability in robots remains a significant challenge.Here,we present a new form of ultralight multifunctional tactile nano-layered carbon aerogel sensor that provides pressure,temperature,material recognition and 3D location capabilities,which is combined with multimodal supervised learning algorithms for object recognition.The sensor exhibits human-like pressure(0.04–100 kPa)and temperature(21.5–66.2℃)detection,millisecond response times(11 ms),a pressure sensitivity of 92.22 kPa^(−1)and triboelectric durability of over 6000 cycles.The devised algorithm has universality and can accommodate a range of application scenarios.The tactile system can identify common foods in a kitchen scene with 94.63%accuracy and explore the topographic and geomorphic features of a Mars scene with 100%accuracy.This sensing approach empowers robots with versatile tactile perception to advance future society toward heightened sensing,recognition and intelligence.

Inhibitory effects of genistein on metastasis of human hepatocellular carcinoma

AIM:To investigate the inhibitory effects of genistein on metastasis of MHCC97-H hepatocellular carcinoma cells and to explore the underlying mechanism.METHODS:MHCC97-H hepatocellular carcinoma cells were exposed to genistein.A cell attachment assay was carried out in a microculture well pre-coated with fibronectin.The invasive activity of tumor cells was assayed in a transwell cell culture chamber,and cell cycle and apoptosis were evaluated by a functional assay.In addition,the expression and phosphorylation of FAK were detected by Western blotting.In situ xenograft transplantation of hepatocellular carcinoma was performed in 12 nude mice and lung metastasis of hepatocellular carcinoma was observed.RESULTS:Genistein signifi cantly inhibited the growth of MHCC97-H cells in vitro.Adhesion and invasiveness of MHCC97-H cells were inhibited in a concentration-dependent fashion,and the inhibitory effect of genistein was more potent in the 10 μg/mL and 20 μg/ mL genistein-treated groups.Genistein caused G0/G1 cell cycle arrest,an S phase decrease,and increased apoptosis.The expression and phosphorylation of FAK in MHCC-97H cells were signifi cantly decreased.In situ xenograft transplantation of hepatocellular carcinoma was also significantly suppressed by genistein.The number of pulmonary micrometastatic foci in the genistein group was signifi cantly lower compared with the control group(12.3±1.8 vs 16.6±2.6,P<0.05).CONCLUSION:Genistein appears to be a promising agent in the inhibition of metastasis of hepatocellular carcinoma.

Metal-halide hybrid perovskite materials are excellent candidates for solar cells and photoelectric devices.In recent years,machine learning(ML)techniques have developed rapidly in many fields and provided ideas for material discovery and design.ML can be applied to discover new materials quickly and effectively,with significant savings in resources and time compared with traditional experiments and density functional theory(DFT)calculations.In this review,we present the application of ML in per-ovskites and briefly review the recent works in the field of ML-assisted perovskite design.Firstly,the advantages of perovskites in solar cells and the merits of ML applied to perovskites are discussed.Secondly,the workflow of ML in perovskite design and some basic ML algorithms are introduced.Thirdly,the applications of ML in predicting various properties of perovskite materials and devices are reviewed.Finally,we propose some prospects for the future development of this field.The rapid devel-opment of ML technology will largely promote the process of materials science,and ML will become an increasingly popular method for predicting the target properties of materials and devices.

Polysulfide modified PtCu intermetallic nanocatalyst with enrichment realizes efficient electrooxidation ethanol to CO_(2)

The main problem faced by ethanol oxidation reaction(EOR)includes low activity,poor selectivity,and durability.In the study,we found that polysulfide modified on the surface of PtCu intermetallic(IM)/C can simultaneously enrich hydroxyl and ethanol,which could effectively improve the catalytic activity,CO_(2) selectivity,and durability of catalyst.The mass activity and the specific activity of the product in 1 M KOH electrolyte reached 17.83 A·mgPt^(-1) and 24.67 mA·cm^(-2).The CO_(2) selectivity of polysulfide modified product achieved 93.5%,which was 30 folds higher than Pt/C.In addition,the catalyst showed high catalytic stability.The mechanism study demonstrates that the surface modified polysulfide could significantly boost the enrichment effect of ethanol and hydroxyl species,accelerating C–C bond cleavage and CO oxidation.
