Highly sensitive nanozyme strip:An effective tool for forensic material evidence identification

During criminal case investigations,blood evidence tracing is critical for criminal investigation.However,the blood stains are often cleaned or covered up after the crime,resulting in trace residue and difficult tracking.Therefore,a highly sensitive and specific method for the rapid detection of human blood stains remains urgent.To solve this problem,we established a nanozyme-based strip for rapid detection of blood evidence with high sensitivity and specificity.To construct reliable nanozyme strips,we synthesized CoFe_(2)O_(4) nanozymes with high peroxidase-like activity by scaling up to gram level,which can be supplied for six million tests,and conjugated antibody as a detection probe in nanozyme strip.The developed CoFe_(2)O_(4) nanozyme strip can detect human hemoglobin(HGB)at a concentration as low as 1 ng/mL,which is 100 times lower than the commercially available colloidal gold strips(100 ng/mL).Moreover,this CoFe_(2)O_(4) nanozyme strip showed high generality on 12 substrates and high specificity to human HGB among 13 animal blood samples.Finally,we applied the developed CoFe_(2)O_(4) nanozyme strip to successfully detect blood stains in three real cases,where the current commercial colloidal gold strip failed to do.The results suggest that the CoFe_(2)O_(4) nanozyme strip can be used as an effective on-scene detection method for human blood stains,and can further be used as a long-term preserved material evidence for traceability inquiry.

Studies have proposed that there is evidence for cosmological coupling of black holes(BHs)with an index of k≈3;hence,BHs serve as the astrophysical source of dark energy.However,the data sample is limited for the redshifts of≤2.5.In recent years,the James Webb Space Telescope(JWST)has detected many high-redshift active galactic nuclei(AGNs)and quasars.Among the JWST NIRSpec-/NIRCam-resolved AGNs,three are determined to be in early-type host galaxies with a redshift of z~4.5-7.However,their M_(*)and MBH are in tension with the predicted cosmological coupling of black holes with k=3 at a confidence level of~2σ,which challenges the hypothesis that BHs serve as the origin of dark energy.Future work on high-redshift AGNs using the JWST will further assess such a hypothesis by identifying more early-type host galaxies in the higher mass range.

Tuberculosis(TB)is a chronic infectious disease,which is caused by the pathogen Mycobacterium tuberculosis(Mtb)and reemerged as a global health risk with a significant proportion of multi-drug resistant and extensively drug resistant TB cases.It is very urgent to find some novel high-confidence drug targets in Mtb for discovering the effective anti-TB agents.Thioredoxin reductase(TrxR)has been identified to be a highly viable target for anti-TB drugs for its important role in protecting the pathogen from thiol-specific oxidizing stress,regulating intracellular dithiol/disulfide homeostasis and DNA replication and repair.In the present work,a near-infrared(NIR)fluorescent probe DDAT was developed for the detection of TrxR activity and used to high-throughput screen the TrxR inhibitors from natural products.Two screened TrxR inhibitors from Sappan Lignum and microbial metabolites that were further used to inhibit Mycobacterium tuberculosis.All the results indicate that DDAT is a practical fluorescent molecular tool for the discovery of potential anti-TB drugs.

OBJECTIVES To evaluate the predictive value of fasting plasma glucose(FPG)for in-hospital mortality in patients with acute myocardial infarction(AMI)with different glucose metabolism status.METHODS We selected 5,308 participants with AMI from the prospective,nationwide,multicenter CAMI registry,of which 2,081 were diabetic and 3,227 were nondiabetic.Patients were divided into high FPG and low FPG groups according to the optim-al cutoff values of FPG to predict in-hospital mortality for diabetic and nondiabetic cohorts,respectively.The primary endpoint was in-hospital mortality.RESULTS Overall,94 diabetic patients(4.5%)and 131 nondiabetic patients(4.1%)died during hospitalization,and the optimal FPG thresholds for predicting in-hospital death of the two cohorts were 13.2 mmol/L and 6.4 mmol/L,respectively.Compared with individuals who had low FPG,those with high FPG were significantly associated with higher in-hospital mortality in diabet-ic cohort(10.1%vs.2.8%;odds ratio[OR]=3.862,95%confidence interval[CI]:2.542-5.869)and nondiabetic cohort(7.4%vs.1.7%;HR=4.542,95%CI:3.041-6.782).After adjusting the potential confounders,this significant association was not changed.Further-more,FPG as a continuous variable was positively associated with in-hospital mortality in single-variable and multivariable models regardless of diabetic status.Adding FPG to the original model showed a significant improvement in C-statistic and net reclassification in diabetic and nondiabetic cohorts.CONCLUSIONS This large-scale registry indicated that there is a strong positive association between FPG and in-hospital mor-tality in AMI patients with and without diabetes.FPG might be useful to stratify patients with AMI.

Objective Obesity is a global health concern with management strategies encompassing bariatric surgery and anti-obesity drugs;however,concerns regarding complexities and side effects persist,driving research for more effective,low-risk strategies.The promotion of white adipose tissue(WAT)browning has emerged as a promising approach.Moreover,alisol B 23-acetate(AB23A)has demonstrated efficacy in addressing metabolic disorders,suggesting its potential as a therapeutic agent in obesity management.Therefore,in this study,we aimed to investigate the therapeutic potential of AB23A for mitigating obesity by regulating metabolic phenotypes and lipid distribution in mice fed a high-fat diet(HFD).Methods An obesity mouse model was established by administration of an HFD.Glucose and insulin metabolism were assessed via glucose and insulin tolerance tests.Adipocyte size was determined using hematoxylin and eosin staining.The expression of browning markers in WAT was evaluated using Western blotting and quantitative real-time polymerase chain reaction.Metabolic cage monitoring involved the assessment of various parameters,including food and water intake,energy metabolism,respiratory exchange rates,and physical activity.Moreover,oil red O staining was used to evaluate intracellular lipid accumulation.A bioinformatic analysis tool for identifying the molecular mechanisms of traditional Chinese medicine was used to examine AB23A targets and associated signaling pathways.Results AB23A administration significantly reduced the weight of obese mice,decreased the mass of inguinal WAT,epididymal WAT,and perirenal adipose tissue,improved glucose and insulin metabolism,and reduced adipocyte size.Moreover,treatment with AB23A promoted the expression of browning markers in WAT,enhanced overall energy metabolism in mice,and had no discernible effect on food intake,water consumption,or physical activity.In 3T3-L1 cells,AB23A inhibited lipid accumulation,and both AB23A and rapamycin inhibited the mammalian target of rapamycin-sterol regulato

The nanohertz stochastic gravitational wave background from cosmic string loops and the abundant high redshift massive galaxies

Recently,pulsar timing array(PTA)experiments have provided compelling evidence for the existence of the nanohertz stochastic gravitational wave background(SGWB).In this work,we demonstrated that cosmic string loops generated from cosmic global strings offer a viable explanation for the observed nanohertz SGWB data,requiring a cosmic string tension parameter of log(Gμ)~-12 and a loop number density of log N~4.Additionally,we revisited the impact of cosmic string loops on the abundance of massive galaxies at high redshifts.However,our analysis revealed challenges in identifying a consistent parameter space that can concurrently explain both the SGWB data and observations from the James Webb Space Telescope.This indicates the necessity for either extending the existing model employed in this research or acknowledging distinct physical origins for these two phenomena.

BACKGROUND Polyneuropathy,organomegaly,endocrinopathy,M-protein,skin changes(POEMS)syndrome is a rare paraneoplastic syndrome that encompass multiple systems.The most common clinical symptoms of POEMS syndrome are pro-gressive sensorimotor polyneuropathy,organ enlargement,endocrine disorders,darkening skin,a monoclonal plasma cell proliferative disorder,and lymph node hyperplasia.The organomegaly consists of hepatosplenomegaly and/or lym-phadenopathy;cases of cardiomyopathy are rare.Diagnoses are often delayed because of the atypical nature of the syndrome,exposing patients to possibly severe disability.Therefore,identifying atypical symptoms can improve the prognosis and quality of life among POEMS syndrome patients.lenalidomide and dexamethasone.CONCLUSION When patients with cardiomyopathy have systemic manifestations such as numb limbs and darkening skin,the POEMS syndrome is the most possible diagnosis.

Is the W-boson mass enhanced by the axion-like particle,dark photon,or chameleon dark energy?

The W-boson mass(m W=(80.4335±0.0094)Ge V)measured by the Collider Detector at Fermilab Collaboration is greater than the standard model(SM)prediction at a confidence level of 7σ,strongly suggesting the presence of new particles or fields.In the literature,various new particles and/or fields have been introduced to explain the astrophysical and experimental data,and their presence,in principle,may also enhance the W-boson mass.In this study,we investigate axion-like particle(ALP),dark photon(DP),and chameleon dark energy(DE)models for a solution to the W-boson mass excess.We find that the ALP and DP interpretations have been significantly narrowed down by global electroweak fits.The possibility of attributing the W-boson mass anomaly to the chameleon DE is ruled out by other experiments.

A Secure and Effective Energy-Aware Fixed-Point Quantization Scheme for Asynchronous Federated Learning

Asynchronous federated learning(AsynFL)can effectivelymitigate the impact of heterogeneity of edge nodes on joint training while satisfying participant user privacy protection and data security.However,the frequent exchange of massive data can lead to excess communication overhead between edge and central nodes regardless of whether the federated learning(FL)algorithm uses synchronous or asynchronous aggregation.Therefore,there is an urgent need for a method that can simultaneously take into account device heterogeneity and edge node energy consumption reduction.This paper proposes a novel Fixed-point Asynchronous Federated Learning(FixedAsynFL)algorithm,which could mitigate the resource consumption caused by frequent data communication while alleviating the effect of device heterogeneity.FixedAsynFL uses fixed-point quantization to compress the local and global models in AsynFL.In order to balance energy consumption and learning accuracy,this paper proposed a quantization scale selection mechanism.This paper examines the mathematical relationship between the quantization scale and energy consumption of the computation/communication process in the FixedAsynFL.Based on considering the upper bound of quantization noise,this paper optimizes the quantization scale by minimizing communication and computation consumption.This paper performs pertinent experiments on the MNIST dataset with several edge nodes of different computing efficiency.The results show that the FixedAsynFL algorithm with an 8-bit quantization can significantly reduce the communication data size by 81.3%and save the computation energy in the training phase by 74.9%without significant loss of accuracy.According to the experimental results,we can see that the proposed AsynFixedFL algorithm can effectively solve the problem of device heterogeneity and energy consumption limitation of edge nodes.

1.Introduction Sarcoidosis is a disease that involves multiple systems and organs and is characterized by non-caseous necrotizing granulomas whose etiology is not fully understood.1 About 25%–80%of patients have eye and adnexal involvement.2 Uveitis,secondary glaucoma,cataracts,and macular edema are the most common complications of ocular sarcoidosis.3 Sarcoid uveitis refers to uveitis that occurs in patients with sarcoidosis and typically manifests as granulomatous anterior uveitis,posterior uveitis,or panuveitis.Symptoms of sarcoid uveitis include blurred vision,eye pain,photophobia,and tearing.In the anterior segment,iris nodules or mutton-fat keratic precipitates(KPs)are generally the most common clinical signs.In the vitreous cavity,the typical appearance is a snowball-like vitreous opacity.The fundus typically manifests as peripheral chorioretinal granulomas and peripheral phlebitis.Herein,we present a case of sarcoid uveitis with fungal endophthalmitis-like vitreitis.
